- A member of the Two Kettle Band of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, LeBeau served as a nurse caring for those wounded at Omaha Beach during the D-Day invasion. She later served on the front lines during the Battle of the Bulge. LeBeau celebrates her 100th birthday in October, 2019.

She sounds like an amazing woman. Its great to honor the soldiers and all but the nurses/field medics are underappreciated IMO and need more love.
I could listen to her stories for hours, what a beautiful woman .
Her long pause when you asked her her feelings on being able to help those soldiers and serve .... wow. A most powerful, gentle, humble, beautiful soul. Thank you for this.

@@jtoddjb My grandpa was a medic in the 82nd airborne paratroopers, fought on dday, market garden in holland, and wounded in The Battle of The bulge. I'm sure he would of appreciated people like her.
Grandpa was not enthused of speaking about his harrowing days fighting the Nazis.

What a wonderful lady. You can only imagine some of injuries she would have treated.
I am so glad she has lived so long she deserves it. Her last words "it was an honour and a privilage" bought a tear to my eyes. She has been awarded France Legion of Honour medal in 2006.

Listening to her was like it happened 10 years ago.
She certainly deserves our gratitude for her wonderful efforts while one of our nurses. Im sure she saw more than most and it had to have been difficult for her to see such suffering.

I had family members who fought on both sides. My mother lost her father and uncle in ww2 and my grandpa, dads dad,who barely survived dday to the ardennes where he was wounded in waffen ss territory. Waffen ss didn't like paratroopers!

The nightmares she must have had, seeing all those mangled bodies, and she was an angel comforting the dying soldiers. She has all of my respect.
Exactly what I was thinking. Its great to honor the soldiers but the nurses/field medics deserve just as much recognition, especially since many were injured and killed on the front lines as well.
As Capt. Miller said, "Earn this." So many heroic and incredibly humble people gave so much for our everyday freedoms. "Thanks" doesn't begin to cover it.

Amazing how many American hero's came from the fringes of our society. From the Navajo code talkers, to the all Japanese 442nd Infantry Battalion the most decorated US unit of WW2 and the all black unit of Tuskegee airmen who escorted bombers (without loss over a period of months) over Europe. History that needs to be remembered. God Bless Marcella LeBeau and all those who have served and have not received the recognition that they deserve.

This nurse had a really tough job during her service during WWII. The Airborne Infantrymen and Regular Infantrymen who went through her ward that lived are grateful for her duty and dedication.
She saved the best story for the very last. Beautiful.

Alcohol causes so many problems especially for aboriginal peoples. Dunno if it was right to ban them from drinking but I think it was with good intentions.

I had to pause a few times to wipe away tears of understanding. I'm a 8yr veteran of the Gulf War, USAF 347TH med group, Moody AFB Valdosta, GA. She's a trooper.

Such a beautiful lady in heart and soul. I could listen to her for hours.
That generation is just about gone. The youngest wwii vets are in their mid 90's now. Hope they can document the stories of as many of these veterans as possible.
There are others on TH-cam, but the clips are typically much shorter and used as witnesses in documentaries.
It kills me. These are the people I grew up with all over my neighborhood. The WW2 generation them being gone... Every time I see we have lost one more.. It hurts my soul. But I know they are all up there with with their buddies swinging with the big bands again.
I Salute this Lady, A true American Hero .

My grandma Marcella was discriminated against when she got back to South Dakota. She would come to our school on the reservation and show us pictures of her time serving. She lived in town in a pink house, everytime id walk in town I’d stop at look at her house for awhile. She’s definitely my hero.

I've briefly looked at menus about her, and most mention that she received the Belgium Medal of Honor and the French Legion of Honour medal. I found no mention of such recognition from our own country.
She will be 101 years old in October - - it's not too late. She deserves the highest honor for military service which is awarded by the USA.

She never cried but it took everything I had not to. I've experienced violence and fear for life myself but I can't imagine their horror. What a hero.

This story, in my opinion, defines selfless service. How many lives has she personally saved? I'd guess many. I can't say enough about this true story of service. For her to relive the horrible experiences of war must've been exhausting. Thank you for being a fine example of how others should serve. You're a hero to me.

What a fantastic story. I've read many historical books and seen many documentaries on WWII. This video gave me an entirely different perspective. What a courageous woman.

That was simply incredible. On behalf of my maternal grandparents, who were in western Holland during the war, thank you.
No words can express my admiration and gratitude for this hero, and for the group that made this oral history. There were many moments while watching this that I thought my head and heart would explode because of how beautiful, endearing, touching, amazing, and precious this is. Her story is also profound. What our country--especially our army--did to her people is unforgivable. Yet she heeded the call and risked her life to serve the civilization that destroyed hers.
p.s. I LOVE the Irish accent she still has from her father....Also my father lived in Liverpool at the same time she served there. He told me about how the sky was so full of hundreds of marshalling planes for D-Day that it blocked out most of the sunlight, and the noise of all their rumbling engines together was deafening, constant, vibrating his body to his bones.
This sweet lady reminds me of my little grandmother.. she was born on the Cherokee nation on 14th April 1894.
What a precious woman who has lived a remarkable life of 100 years! So intelligent and articulate. Interesting to note that if everyone of us who would love to honor, knowing well that generation, she would prefer anonymity and not seek to draw any attention to herself individually. That generation did what they did for all the right reasons.

More Indians need to seriously consider serving in one of the military branches. Hands down, the best decision I made in my life. The training, the opportunities, the education, & the doors it opened for me during & after service was enormous. I’m grateful for being able to serve in the 2/75. Best years of my life & ones I long to go back to.

Beautiful story beautiful soul. You are doing work recording these heroic people that is priceless. It makes my heart hurt beyond description of all the stories lost forever at the passing of this generation. I think it should be taught in schools ahead of all the nonsense that's out there. When these people talk about the way this country has changed there sad that all these people suffered and died by the million's fighting evil to protect our great country and from the top all the way down are destroying it and were just letting it happen. We need to stand up and remove the corruption and replace it with people of Honor.
