    My daughter who is 8 years old just got me into DVDs again. I’m 32 and it’s a hobby of ours now we go to yard sales and thrift stores and buy movies and tv shows we like. It feels so good to just watch what you want without having to worry about internet connection, not to mention the special features and commentary on some DVDs.

    I used to collect dvds but then started to upgrade to blu ray. I recently bought a ps5 and I am astonished at how great dvd upscale on my 65 inch tv, dvds look very good obviously not as amazing as blu ray but not far off and I love this as I still have a big collection of dvds that never came out on blu ray including lots of concerts and music documentaries.

    I’d like to see a video on movies that you can only get on DVD. For example my daughter recently asked me for sisterhood of the traveling pants but from what I can tell it never got a blu ray release. Great content and thanks for the video.

    • @HomeVideoHangouts
      @HomeVideoHangouts  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Thats a great idea and I likely will do a video like that at some point. I have both of the sisterhood of the traveling pants movies because my wife likes them and I have them on DVD but the second one is available on blu-ray and its not too hard to find for sale online. I also may do a video ok out of print movies because sometimes even if a movie is on blu-ray its expensive if its out of print.

    I do the best of both worlds, I have over 3000 blu rays and rip em on to a NAS Hard drive for Plex to stream my library with metadata, synopsis, rotten tomato score, actor info, my own star ratings, etc on all my TVs. I highly recommend every physical media owner take the time and to do the same, makes organizing and watching your flicks super easy, fun, and convenient instead of walking up and down your shelves of movies and reading the spine to pick one. Saves yours discs too from being physically played. Tons of videos on how to do it rather easily.

    Talking of DVDs, GREAT subject I would never ever throw any of mine away . Music magpie give you insulting prices for your collection. I just keep them on the shelf now. I’ve got everything re-organised.
    Even my old VHS tapes and my laser discs I keep in the cupboard just for a rainy day never throw your movies out. Keep them. They’re cool to watch again. Obviously technology has moved on with Blu-ray and 4K love all my movies with my little home theatre thx

    It's disappointing that physical media is dying the way it is, and most folks don't understand what is disappearing (the actual ownership of what they are buying). Between streamers having the right to completely remove movies and shows from their platforms at any time, adding advertisements to the viewing experience, and charging monthly subscriptions or individual viewings of movies and shows, it is insane to NOT collect physical media now more than ever.

    I grab DVDs for certain TV shows since a lot of order shows haven’t been properly upscaled to 1080 anyway. Heck, a lot of them don’t have the source material to even get the proper treatment for 1080. So nothing wrong with goin the DVD route on that! Plus I have a few CRTs kicking around for VHS, gaming, and watching old cartoon DVDs from my youth. And with my Panasonic 4K player, the upscaling on that is pretty impressive for even DVD so I’m just fine with having a few banging around the ol collection.

    Actually, Blu-ray discs have a higher scratch resistance compared to DVDs. They are coated with a special hard coating layer, making them more resistant to scratches. However, they can still be scratched if handled carelessly.

    • @HomeVideoHangouts
      @HomeVideoHangouts  3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I have found that blu-rays are more scratch resistant but DVDS are more likely to play once scratched. I played a DVD from the library the other night that looked like it has been raked across asphalt and it still played fine. I was shocked!

    At thrift stores and pwn shops DVDs are cheaper to buy now than it used to be to rent at Blockbuster. So I always buyDVDs of movies i would like to watch and think of them like rentals back in the day. I’ll accumulate a small stack, watch them, and then donate them back to the thrift store. Usually keeping one or two I really like and adding them to my collection. For specific movies I absolutely loved I will some times purchase on BR or 4K. Another way to make this work for your budget is to only pay for 1 streaming service per month and then you can check if the DVD is streaming on that service, if it is not, then that is a good buy. It’s cheaper than paying for 2-4 services every month.
    Right now I only have Hulu. If I see a dvd for 50 cents that I want to watch and it’s not streaming on Hulu then I buy it. Ends up being way cheaper than having Netflix, Hulu, and Max. Plus I own the movie.

    • @HomeVideoHangouts
      @HomeVideoHangouts  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thats a good strategy! I find it fun to pick up movies on physical media cheap and then have a collection that I can pull from anytime I want to watch something. I have over 1700 movies on physical media at this point at most of them are movies I haven't seen yet but I enjoy slowly watching them and reselling the ones I don't like and then picking up more to slowly curate my collection.

    I grew up with dvds, but when I was a teenager and started to collect it was all about blu rays. What I like about dvds over blu rays is their price, and how almost any title is available in that format. Specifically foreign films. I am still waiting for some movies to get a blu ray release and it is very annoying.

    It's funny. Watching this I'm reminded on almost a daily basis of how fantastic 4K is. The problem is when 4K came out you were expected to buy a new machine and a new TV and spend a significant amount on the disc itself. I just can't justify that. Now don't get me wrong, if someone rolls up to my door and says here have a free tv player and 100 discs I'm not going to turn it down. That's one of the things I liked when I got my first Blu-ray player. I found out it was backwards compatible with all of my dvds. I don't know if that's the same case with a 4K player.

    • @HomeVideoHangouts
      @HomeVideoHangouts  หลายเดือนก่อน

      4K players are backwards compatible and actually upscale older formats too. My 4K blu ray player upscales dvds and blu rays to 4k. I even have a separate bluray player that upscales vhs tapes to 1080p quality.

    A person has to be careful who they buy these DVD's from. I just bought one from Ebay. It wasn't cheap, this one cost me over $22. It was the only seller any where that had the title Silver River with Errol Flynn and Ann Sheridan starring. This disc won't even load let alone play and I understand there are older Warner Bros. discs that don't play but I don't even believe this is a real Warner Bros. disc. I have a lot of them and none of them have a purple color to the read side of the disc. I think this is a poor example of a pirated disc. There is no way to contact the seller because he has contact turned off. I have to wait 7 days to give it a bad review according to what Ebay's rules are. Now I have to find out how to get my money back from Ebay. Now I have asked Ebay for a refund and this guy was reported.
