Why I Left "Mormons on Mushrooms" Podcast (the WHOLE story)

  • This is not a normal episode. For 2 years, I was a co-host of the Mormons on Mushrooms podcast and I loved it. I enjoyed interviewing our guests and the episodes with just Mike, Doug and I. Sadly, this has come to and end and ultimately birthed Cults to Consciousness. While I am hurt by the choices that were made, I'm excited to dive deep into my own podcast! This is the full story of what happened and how we got here; joined by my partner in love, my fiancé, Jonathan.

I am SO impressed with your calling out how this conflicted with a commitment to include feminine energy by literally eliminating it. The overwhelming male dominance in high-demand religions often seems to be something males DO take with them when they leave the religions. (Unsurprising, given that it's one of the few shared beliefs, even if it's implemented differently.) You didn't just call it out -- you called it out in a way I'm mentally bookmarking to quote the next time I deal with it. I don't have to write it down, because let's face it -- a woman doesn't go a day without having to use it SOMEWHERE.

Shelise💔 you are more than capable. I honestly didn't go to the revival because I was getting a different vibe from the podcast that I didn't like and was wondering where you went. Things started going downhill for me on that episode where the guest told Mike and Doug to shut up and let you talk more (I was thinking the same thing) 😂.... But they didn't listen. So I'm very excited for your cults to consciousness baby! Your words and ideas and insights and stories just hit different in a good way. Also I like that you're doing it on TH-cam it feels more real and like you're not trying to hide like it sometimes did with the other podcast. Thank you for choosing to keep putting yourself out there even after rejection🧡

I never listened to Mormons on Mushrooms, so this background is shocking to hear. As someone who grew up adjacent to the old order Mennonites in rural Canada, I need you to know that your voice and message is impacting even those of us that didn't directly have experience in the depths of a cult. I have unpacked so much of my internalized misogyny and deep insecurities about sexuality, identity, and bodily autonomy because of the perspectives I have learned from on this podcast. Movement and breathwork has been incredibly healing in my journey, and if you were to ever do an episode around that I would be thrilled. Thank you so much for your dedication and vulnerability, and power as a woman with a voice that needs to be shared.

Women are told that their submission is their empowerment, but it is our active voice that gives strength, not just to us, but to the world. The reason they wanted to separate ways is that everything was growing too fast, and they got scared. You are obviously the power behind their growth, so to go back to a safe place for them they had to break up with you. It was a very immature thing to do, and they should have had the balls to tell you, "We are scared, and this has gotten too big, and we just want to go back to being small players!" They were running scared and afraid and sabotaging what they had built with you.

    • @CultstoConsciousness

Hi again! This is a very interesting observation and interpretation of the events. I will say they often didn't want the podcast to grow and whenever I would bring it up they got squeamish. I never understood it and they actually admitted to feeling that way. But maybe that was their journey. I wish the best for them.

Shelise, omg. A few things I want to say here.
    1) solstice would absolutely have not happened the way it did without your constant work on pulling it all together. You created the most magical space for the most magical experience I’ve ever had. The amount of work you put into making that happen was seen and so appreciated. I’m forever grateful for everything you did and the way you showed up for the whole community at solstice.
    2) I started listening because of your work on the social media side of things. You brought in so many listeners, and so many lives are changed because of your work thus far. At least, I know mine is!
    3) I hold very strong to my belief that everything happens for a reason. There’s a divine timing to everything, even the most painful experiences happen in order for us to grow into doing something better, or being better overall. This journey you’re on is no different. You’re a huge role model, an incredible person, and an exquisite speaker and storyteller in your own right. I’m so sorry for the hurt you’re experiencing now, but I know for a fact that this will launch you into a space of success. I’m so excited to follow your execution of COC and I can’t thank you enough for continuing to create a space where women’s voices are prioritized.

      2. I'm so happy to hear it helped you in some way. :)
      3. Thank you! I don't even know what to say to all those sweet compliments! I'm excited to see where this journey takes me. Thanks for coming along for the ride! xoxo

As an outsider, it honestly sounds like one of the male podcasters or even both had some level of anticipation or hope of a more personal relationship and it built up over a couple years.
It sounds as if when you met your Fiancé and got serious, that was a blow to the fantasy/hope that had created the draw/bond between the guys and you.
I could see that after your romantic choice was made, the relationship with the co-host morphed from the comfortable "I want her around" feeling to the automatic pushing away of the source of hurt, embarrassment, dejection, or rejection.
This could be literally why the feelings and actions were like a romantic break-up.
I would venture to say that the one who was the most angry or cold would be the one who had the strongest feelings.
Just saying as a guy, I can see this happening even if there was never a true though of a "real" relationship.
Sometimes the fantasy or subconscious attraction to a girl causes a real visceral emotional bond to that girl and reactions could be as strong as if they were actually a romantic partner.
Kinda like when you have a very close friend, of the opposite sex or even the same sex, for a long time and you have an emotional bond that is possibly even stronger and more vulnerable than with a potential mate because you share all the good, bad, private moments.
Then an outsider walks up and they commit all the love and emotional energy to the new person, you feel very hurt and discarded so you get closed off and push them away to protect your own feelings.

    • @CultstoConsciousness
      @CultstoConsciousness  ปีที่แล้ว +6

Very, very interesting! I never felt as though they had feelings for me and both of them were married. They felt like very very close friends or even brothers. But I suppose anything is possible.

    • @PsychoKillerSquirrel
      @PsychoKillerSquirrel ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@CultstoConsciousness It very well could have even been a not-so-conscious feeling or reaction.
I have felt and seen times when guys have a strong emotional attachment to a girl and never actually plan or even want a sexual relationship with that person.
I'm sure you have seen or heard of guys being overly protective or possessive of girls they are related to or had very close attachments with.
Sometimes it is even subconscious to the point to where even the guy doesn't know why he feels the way he does.
I guess I am rambling on and beating this dead horse because it is a very sensitive thing to me.
Many years ago I had a very dear friend who I pushed away very rudely and permanently due to me not able to handle being a secondary thought when she before had given so much to me and eventually went her own path.
I was in a relationship with another girl and never had any plans to be in one with her but then reacted as if she was my wife and cheated/dumped on me.
A very poor and pathetic action on my part and a permanent cloud of shame I will never lose.
Whether or not there was a secret desire to have you pulled in for an actual relationship will never be known because we as guys rarely even like admitting things like that to ourselves much less others who can pass judgement.
Again, it could also have been on the other end of the spectrum where it was purely emotional with no logical or conscious actions involved.
But there is always the chance that they just got a taste of attention and wanted to remove someone who has more of a natural draw and easily develop the highest of a fan base than the others and so was bumped out to make them feel a bit more of the spotlights warmth.

I just caught your in-depth episode on MS this morning and I was considering checking out MoM, but now I won't be. I don't have time for dishonest people that are still exhibiting the training they learned at their Mormon daddies' knees... use a woman's talents without complete recognition of her contribution, then ghost when they don't feel 100% in control, but of course pat your shoulder, mealymouth a bunch of platitudes and tell you you did your best BUT they still want more but only on their terms. UGH. I'm not sure they should have any part of anyone discussing their issues being vulnerable to the public. They haven't dealt with their own shit, VERY OBVIOUSLY. And guess what? Your sense that you were going on to greater personal things has come true. Good for you, dearling. Good for you.

It sounds like a breakup from dating someone. Then that person adds this ... "we can still be friends", which isn't really true. Being honest is important in all relationships. Your sense of feeling was telling you the truth. It was Mike trying to let you down easy.... Your honesty is refreshing. Acceptance is a real gift of things one has no control over as you may know.
It does sound like a breakup of a threesome. It had emotion, lack of communication and deception....("we can sill be friends") or something to that affect.... In response to the #103 MoM episode about kicking off Shelise: Wow. This episode is so disappointing. #Patriarchy
Shelise is getting booted from the show she helped create. Their reasoning sounds like BS and feels super shady to me.
They want Shelise to become a co-host (she resists and offers to be "part-time"). They string her along and tell her to own being a full-on cohost, so she trusts them and does that. She helps build
their platform with her huge audience on social media, is always complimented on the show for how needed her voice is, helps plan a huge in-person event in another state... then she's booted the day
    after it ends.
The second half of this episode is so patronizing. Here is a short list of only a few of my grievances.
    1. They talk about being shocked that she cared so much about the
podcast (when they benefited from her giving her all).
    2. They have been saying for so long how they want to incorporate more
of the "divine feminine" (but kick off the only woman)
    3. They talk about how Shelise wanted to professionalize the podcast,
and they didn't take her advice, but then they offer to help her with
HER podcast. Then, in the same breath, they want to benefit from her
research, time, and efforts to help legally better the podcast that
they are simultaneously kicking her off of.
This feels exactly like how the church treats women. And I don't buy
their whole line about too many podcast hosts per episode and guests
not being vulnerable. That could have been worked out on a rotation
schedule EASILY. Some guests were so vulnerable that they couldn't
air specific episodes because of it!
Bottom line, I think Doug and Mike made a HUGE mistake, and Shelise
was EXTREMELY kind and gracious... I certainly wouldn't have been so gentle.

Your finance is a babe and seems very supportive, love seeing happy couples :) Certainly interested in following along with all this. One of the major tenants of the mormon faith that was pounded into you is agency and coming to grips with it probably not actually being a thing has been a mind job. Thank you for the suggestion. I will see if I can find an expert on it and then add it to my list of ideas! I personally believe we have free will, and that we came here with a certain overarching mission or goal in life. For example, learning how to be brave enough to leave a cult like religion and find independence and possibly inspire others to do so. There are a million different ways that could play out to get to the same result, meaning I have a "choose your own adventure" option, however, my soul will naturally gravitate towards the choices that will result in learning the lesson that I set out for. BUT, thats just my opinion after reading books and such haha

@@CultstoConsciousness Thank you for the reply! Hopefully it comes up as a topic, especially if its different from how you think.
When I think about my own story to leave the church, sometimes I feel like it wasn't a choice. Because of the pain and overwhelming cognitive distance I had to find a way to cope.
My chosen method was running, which gave me the headspace to peal back the layers, which lead to more cognitive dissonance which lead to running further and further.
Eventually while training for my first ultra marathon, exhausted to point where I could no longer emotionally repress anything, a truth bubbled up from my subconscious. That I wasn't a bad person and that a major reason I was running this far was to punish myself and that running the way I was was basically socially acceptable self harm. That evening on the way home I came out to my wife after mentally struggling for 5 years.

@@CultstoConsciousness Exciting! I'll be looking forward to listening. This weekend I was chatting w/ a friend who thinks similarly about it. A few points were: you still have to choose, the concept doesn't need to hang over you constantly but its a useful tool when considering your behavior or the behavior of others, especially if its negative and you're choosing how to respond. I also thought, reality may be determinism but practically we should act like it isn't a thing and "choose" our best life.

@@CultstoConsciousness I’ve always wondered what actually makes a religion different from a Cult. We (my sister and I) were never raised as hardcore Christians. We believed in God, we knew the basics. We went to church Christmas Eve & Easter (we honestly didn’t even know our church had Sunday church, just assumed it was those two days out of the year). We I was 8 I experienced some horrible SA from my Aunts Husband (my Uncle) his step son from his previous relationship. After all that came out, they (parents) decided to put us in a “private school”. We are Native American & had a Seventh Day Adventist church on the Rez that non Tribal members went to church at. They did school ONLY for Tribal kids (as an adult it’s like they were trying to spread their religion to our Rez like the Christians did in the 1800’s). None of of that went to that school came from broken homes, we weren’t poor, we didn’t fit that “church tribal school” persona they made it sound like). I remember once a year all of us had to write a thank you letter to donors who donated to keep the school running. It was never in our words. The teacher would write a letter on the board & we would have to copy it. Only about 12-15 kids total went to this school & 1 teacher taught all classes 1st-6th. We did more prayer, worship & bible study then any other subject. We would open with prayer, then do worship for an hour then bible study for an hour then move to basic courses. As I got older I realized how Cult like even the school was. Every Friday the teacher would encourage us to bring our families to Church Saturday. They were HARDCORE SAD. Like no work or eating from Friday at dusk til Saturday at dusk (every week fast that 24 hours). It was crazy!

Don't get me wrong, I love your channel and will continue to watch.... that being said, I find it shows you were in a cult because I hear so much emotional manipulation in your interactions. Buisness is very straightforward, and emotions, love, family love, and feelings dont mix well with it. It was a power struggle. They couldn't manage your creative energy and enthusiasm, and they let you go. Being the hard worker that you are, supported by an equally brilliant husband, you hit the ground running.they did you a favor by letting you go, now you have your own show, and you're doing well for yourself.

In my opinion this break with you will be the death of the podcast and maybe the community as well. I hope the community can morph and grow in a new direction from this. #minusthepatriarchy

Hi Kathryn! I'm happy to hear you were a devout listener to the MoM podcast. It makes your opinions that much more relevant. Everyone has different tastes, and having said that, I'm happy you enjoyed my flavor! lol Thanks for being here! I can't wait to see where it goes from here. #amplifywomen !
