  • If you are looking for a metabolism edge, you’ll be interested in what Keith has been doing for the past six months. Many of you recognize my husband from our channel, 2 Fit Docs, chronicling his weight loss of 80 lb. (36kg). While his journey was successful, some things took a toll on his metabolism. This video shares how he has been using cold therapy to boost his metabolism.

I take a freezing cold shower by slowly counting out loud. Breathe deeply while counting ..one, two, three,...sixty, then start back to one, two, three... It keeps your mind focused on counting, and you can gauge how many minutes have passed by counting to sixty...one minute. I always feel refreshed and invigorated for hours afterwards. It's kinda hard, but so worth it!

Love it! For the past 10 years, I have always ended my morning showers with about a 5-second cold swish -- to wake me up, get me going, close my pores ... all that. I like it. But that's 5 seconds. Keith, you are the man 🤜👏💪

Awesome vid, love you guys! Thanks for sharing. I do think it's hilarious all these "new" therapies. I'm a lifelong northern Minnesotan here, living by Lake Superior. We do Sauna, summer and winter, then jump in the lake or snow and roll and lay and float or tread water. **Your caution for some people to not do it this way is valid and good** - except for when it comes to the indigenous peoples of the north lands and us Scandis. Inuits, Finns, Norwegians, Swedes and Germans - we've been doing "cold shock therapy" all our lives, young and old. We just call it living, no fancy words lol. And yes, it feels AMAZING!!! Late at night in the winter, in full fluffy snow under a full moon - there is no other feeling like it! The rest of the world thought we were crazy until now, and now they're paying money for what we get for free and it's not nearly as magical in the gym or salon or shower. We knew how awesome it felt all these years, even for the next 2 to 3 days, and how great it is for your skin. You TINGLE all over! Yes, even for a day or two, Ready to Rock. Climb on board peeps, we were way ahead of ya. Now I have a great new therapy to share - sign up to do volunteer visits at your local nursing homes and assisted living homes. Visit our lonely elders that have been thrown away by our society, ask, listen, learn. Don't talk about yerself, just listen and learn. Learn that all these "new" therapies are just reconstituted. Our ancestors were smart people, smarter than us - they didn't have the same manufactured materials, they didn't have the same science, but the wise ones knew amazing things about our earth and our bodies. They developed insightful health care regimens that get used, forgotten, relearned and reconstituted century after century. And I'm not joking by the way - I've volunteered visiting the elderly of my community since I was 13 years old in the 80s, and I continue to learn INCREDIBLE forgotten things on gardening, farming, animal care, body and mind health, and life "hacks". THANK YOU AS ALWAYS Dr. Becky and Dr. Keith, yer a little young for my liking to get advice from, but you're doing very well 😜👌💕

70 isn't cold, that's room temperature! It's well known that rinsing your hair after shampooing, in cold water, less than 50 degrees, makes it shiny and strong, so it would follow that rinsing your whole body in cold water could also be beneficial. Decades ago, when we couldn't afford to fill the propane tank, which fueled the hot water heater and kitchen stove, cold showers was all we had, and this was in a very cold location in the Sierra Nevada's.

LOL Now about this "cold" stuff... afraid our street water is already quite warm, almost hot. Hmmm... will have to see about over night maybe once the ground cools off a little. Anyways, holding around 80Kg,, but when I need some encouragement I do look you up. You both were great motivators towards our better health!!! What I love about your videos is that you try these techniques and give your viewers a honest opinion. On what works and what doesn’t.
And by doing this, it not only makes your viewers trust you both but it makes us connect with you. So once again I thank you both for your knowledge and explanation of food, safety, nutrition, and health. In a simple layman‘s language, so everyone can understand . Like me, who is just a regular person with no nutritional knowledge. Thank you ❤. I have your 1,2,3 health sheet and I bought your book and faithfully read each and every page. And I have watched so many of your videos and have learned so much and that it’s okay to slip up and not to be too hard on myself, that it’s okay to just begin again. So thank you both so very much. Thanks. I've also been doing cold showers (gradually dialed to cold) most mornings after my morning exercise for a couple of years. Makes a difference, especially in mood. Ocassionlly I will do an afternoon shower followed by a immersion in my bathtub up to chin. Water is only about 72 unless I had some ice pack to take it down to upper 60s. 3 to 5 minutes in bath is really a mood booster over shower as it covers full body. Also, will more rarely do this after exercise and 10 minutes of infrared sauna.

Taking a shower is very hard in my mind. Getting into a bath somehow seems "easier" to me. I aim for the 50 degree range for 4 minutes. Main problem is that it will flare my Raynuads symptoms depite trying to keep my hands warm and dry as I do my plunge. (I am an obesity medicine MD, but have not been routinely recommending this to patients, yet!)

For years, I have rinsed off using cold water in the shower. I start with warmer water to wash my hair, then turn the temp down even more to wash the rest of me and then finish with a cold rinse…from my head to my toes. The reason I started this was I learned that by cooling my body down before I get out of the shower, I do not get the dreaded chills most people get after bathing. It also helps close all the pores on my body, keeping more moisture inside my body and I no longer have the “itches” I used to get. I will check the temperature next time I am in the shower and stay in for a few more minutes just to see if it makes a difference for me. P.S. It might be easier for me because I grew up on the shores of Lake Superior…and that is one cold, cold lake!

  • @katarina8225

The best way to start with cold water exposure is not directly on the head but after a warm shower start with cold water on the feet/ lower legs and after 2- 3days full leg … work slowly upwards . You will love cold exposure after every warm shower , after few weeks you will manage. cold only .!

Wonderful to see you two again. I hope that means Keith is in good health. I have a question about the 'cold exposure.' Do you think that getting into a pool with 'cold' water and swimming or exercising for 10-15 minutes would accomplish the same thing? I would find that easier than standing in a cold shower - brrrrr. Thanks for this and everything - videos, books, lists. etc

That was interesting. I think the victorians used cold bath therapy as an aid for insomnia. They would then get into a warm bed. The cold shower sounds similar to the feel good effects swimmers have after cold wild water swimming.

I'm not brave enough. There's a channel called: Ice Queen. A young lady commits to doing a daily ice dunk for 1 year. She did it through a pregnancy. Her toddler gladly did it along with her. It was amazing to see her toddler adapt to sitting in a tub of ice water, playing happily in cold water next to her mom. I thought something like that would motivate me to try it. But. NO. It didn't. LOL. Maybe in my next life.

PS. I also have cardiac issues. I never go cold instantly but dial it down. Go into cold tub only after dialing down shower. Don't see a need to go into full ice bath mode.

It was wonderful seeing you both!❤
I live in Tucson. In the dead of summer we rarely have cold tap water. I’m trying to figure something out. Like a plastic bag filled with ice cubes and holes poked in it attached to the shower head. 😂 I’ll make it work! This seems too good of a therapy to be stopped by hot water in the cold tap!
What do you think of this improvisation?
    It’s a serious question.
I’ll be 75 in August, and my heart is in perfect shape. I have zero placque, and perfect blood pressure. But I know I could never get into a cold plunge barrel!🥶I thought it was the only way to get benefits.
    Thank you for this video.

It's interesting! Your goal is to lower the temperature to below 75F.

Thank you for doing this video and for your frank opinions. It was very helpful. Ive heard a lot about this. I am hypothyroid so very cold intolerant. And i do think a cold shower would stop my heart! 😟

A couple of questions: Is there any concerns for cold injuries with these temperatures/lengths of time/exposure? Also, what are the effects of this practice on cortisol (if any)? Thanks!

I learned about brown fat many years ago in my keto days. Every time I get cold since then I can say brown fat, brown fat.

Love this, but unfortunately here in the South my cold water doesn’t get colder than 73F, any recommendations?
I have done 3 min cold showers in the winter, but I don’t know how to continue that in the summer. 🤷‍♀️

The goal is below 75F, so you can still benefit.

I’ve been doing a 30 grams of carbs daily, 12 hours fast, 30 minutes of cardio 5 days a weeks with 20 minutes of weight training and my 70 year old body can’t lost more fat. I still have abdominal wall fat. What do to when you hit a plateau?

It probably improves your mood because your're happy the rest of the time you aren't in that cold shower ! :D Seriously, it also probably increases immunity ... kind of like charging a battery.

Would putting your feet into a tub with some really cold water help at all? I live in AZ and right now our water just doesn’t get very cold in the summer. I could go to Costco and stand in the dairy section for a few minutes…lol.

You didn’t mention why doing a 10 day fast destroyed Dr Keith’s metabolism.

I am like you, Dr Becky, I slowly inch myself into colder water. Does it not work if you start in a hot shower and then switch it to cold after a few minutes? I think I could tolerate it better if that is a way to do it.

I would avoid a drastic and quick temperature change. So not hot to cold, but lukewarm to cold.
