    I was stupid and had my betta Robert in a bowl for a little over a year. Recently, I moved him into a 10 gallon tank with a filter, a heater, and lots of plants and decorations, and he's an entirely different fish. He swims around, investigates the plants, and he just seems overall happier. If you're reading this, listen to this video, and my story. Get your fish an actual tank with a filter and heater, it's worth it.

    I put my Betta in a 50 gallon community tank where he was very active. We then set up a small 3 gallon in the kitchen to add some color and put the Betta there. He became very depressed. Would not swim. Ate very little. Just sat at the bottom. After two days, I moved him back to the 50 gallon where he once again is doing great.
    That was proof enough for me that yes they can live in a small place, but to thrive, they need much more.

      +TruckRat Thank you for sharing your story!
      Its great that you observed his behavior and made the choice to let him be in the 50 gallon again. We can tell a lot just by observing how our fish behave and look. I'm sure your Betta really appreciates it!

    THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! I wish more people cared about the plight of these beautiful fish! Pet stores are so cruel. Bettas are not "just a fish". They have personalities if you treat them like a living creature, and not just a thing.

      I have seven (a lot, I know), and I know each one by their personality. I know where they like to hide, which plants they like to have in their aquarium, where they prefer to catch their food (I feed live blackworms), and who likes to chase a laser pointer (if you have bettas and this toy for ... say, your cats or dogs, try it with your bettas too !). I wish people would know to give them the space, filtration, heating, and plants so they can be actual fish and not just decoration !

    I work in a petsmart, though I work as a food dealer and am not a petsmart employee. Despite this, since I know more about betta then some of the associates I will hover around the bettas and spy on people buying them. If they start to make a poor tank choice I polite ask if they would mind a suggestion and give them some tips on keeping bettas and what sort of tank they should get for them and information for keeping them. If they don't want to hear it, I politely back off. There isn't much I can do. But 90% of the time they love the information and are thankful for it ^^ and I feel glad that I made things better for the betta =D though it's not my job(and I am sure my boss wouldn't like that I am doing something non work related) it's nice to help educate people more on these beautiful fish.
    Both of my betta tanks have filters, and while my larger female seems to like her filter, my smaller female is a bit over whelmed by the current so I have a log to block it a bit and reduce it, and it provides her with a nice, still place when she wants to relax =)

      YOU ARE AWESOME. Thank you for giving new betta owners the option to get a good education on their care through you. :D

    • @txferretgirl
      @txferretgirl 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I just wish there was more I could do =( but since I am not even an employee I can only do so much. But does make me smile when I help someone with their fish ^^
      there was a little girl a few weeks ago(well I say little but she was like 12) who was upset that her mom didn't want to get her a hamster so I started talking to her about bettas and showing her and her mom some stuff and shared stories with mine and she got really excited =D and her mom was happy to not have a hamster lol!
      Though I did actually yank a betta off a 2 year old once when his mother thought it was a good idea to let him hold it and he started to shake it. I apologized to the mom and explained that it' snot good to let the fish get shook. Thankfully she understood I normally try not to be so forward so the store doesn't get mad if someone gets upset @.@;; but I couldn't just watch that poor fish get shaken up!

    When I was a kid I had a Betta we named Fire Ball. We kept him in a vase, but it was a large one with a squat base that was about a foot wide and held about two gallons of water. We were able to get various plants that kept the water clean and give him good hiding spots. He seemed like a happy fish. he never tried to jump out and always kept his beautiful color. He lived for 5 years.

    Oh my lanta! This video opened my eyes SO much! i have heard quit a few people on line say: "Your betta needs a 5-10 gallon tank!" And i just roll my eyes...But you are so right. they do need tons more space! maybe not 5-10 gallons, while that seems like it'd be good i think that they would even be happier in a 3 gallon......its way better than a 1 gall (which i have them in now). Thanks so much! i will give them a bigger space now!:)

    thank you so much for making this video! im disgusted every time i go to a fish store or a pet store and see these tiny little bowls for betta fish. when i got my Betta fish Shiver i bought a 10 gallon tank, with lots of fake realistic plants and rocks to swim in. he's almost a year old now and incredibly happy and playful, though he always flairs at me if i wear purple haha. my goal is to eventually save up and get some real plants in there and i bet Shiver will love it too!

    THANK YOU. I bought my betta & a tiny bowl & I didn't realize any of this until I noticed how cold his water was getting. He would just sit still, Then I looked into info about him & realized he's a tropical fish! & actually read the words there is a difference in surviving and thriving! I went out & bought him a big tank with a heater & light & rocks & plants. He's doing much better & swims everywhere I love him and people just don't understand our connection.

    Thank you for making this video! It is all true, the Beta is the most abused and neglected fish. It’s heart breaking because these little fish have so much personality’s, I have never seen a fish with so much! They are like Water puppies. I haven’t had a beta for years. About 2 weeks ago I purchased a little male, half moon. He’s in a 20 gallon planted aquarium with 9 oto catfish that ended up being great tank mates for him. He loves to watch them and often swims with them. He’s hasn’t showed any aggression at all toward them at all. He’s always exploring and has his favorite spots. My heart breaks when I see them at the fish store in those little cups. The one day I was in Petsmart and they had 2 different kinds of cups, the new ones that came in were in different cups and they didn’t even push open the air holes. I called the manager over and she told me they just got them in and didn’t notice that they weren’t the same cups that already had an air hole opened. She called another girl over and had her pop them all open. The problem is this should have been done immediately as soon as they unpacked them! God knows how long they sat there unopened!

    I have three rescue bettas. Right now they each have a 2.5 gallon tank. I will be upgrading to 10 gallon tanks as soon as I can afford them. They seem to be really happy. I rescued them from tiny cups. They were all really sick and damaged. They gave me one of them for free because they didn't think she would make it through the night. It took a lot of doctoring but they are all healthy now.

    Really good video. But also worth mentioning is that the Betta Splendans is no wild caught fish at all, it is domestically bred. So this type of the betta would never survive in the wild to begin with. You are talking about the wild type betta's which lives in the wild in Thailand ;) They are so different from the flashy domestic betta's you find in stores. But none the less, Betta's shall have a good space and a worthy life in captivity none the less :)

    We need to get more people educated on Betta fish! People have always told me they don't require a big tank/space. You'll also see a lot of pet stores carrying Betta starter kits which include a small tank. I'm sad to say when I had my Betta he lived in one of those small tanks. I feel guilty. Surprisingly he lived for 4 years though.

    I own a red and pink male betta fish (it looks awesome) and I completely agree. The store i got it from kept it in a cup sized square tank, LITERALLY cup size. I keep mine in a 55 litre/12 gallon tank with lots of space, plants and decorations, not to mention he is king of the tank ;)

    • @ShadowGirlFan
      @ShadowGirlFan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Every store keeps them in cup sizes, it's not good to keep them in those sizes for a long time, but it's the most efficient way to stock them up as they have a /lot/ of fry. It's just the problem that chain stores like Petco sell the "Betta Tanks", that are not suitable for them to live in for their whole lives, and people go on believing that the fish will thrive in that sort of horrid setting to where it will live it's years because they don't think to look up more about them online, and just go by the word of workers who are most likely just trying to get something sold. I work as a custodial worker and this one teacher has two in two small "Betta Tanks", changes their water maybe once out of 2-3 weeks, ugh, and overfeeds them as they are always bloated. The one has horrible fin-rot, and the other is now getting it. She doesn't even put more water in when it gets half way down to where they have only half of the space of what's in that tank. I tried explaining to her (She asked me why her tank is so dirty, since she knows I keep Betta), and she just made excuses when I told her why her tank was.

    Thank you for creating a video that highlights the horror of the abuse these poor fish suffer. Every time I see Bettas in plastic cups half filled with dirty water I want to scream bloody murder. The idea that small animals do not experience suffering when placed in such horrid conditions is insane. People need to be informed about proper animal care and this video helps to do that.
    If you have watched this video and currently own a Betta, please provide it with, at the very least, a 2.5 gallon or greater capacity tank. Please check the water regularly for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels. Do regular water changes as well as removing uneaten food from the tank. The smaller the volume of water the more maintenance is necessary.
    Having a Betta is no less a responsibility than caring for any other pet. These beautiful fish can be lively and high personality pets for 3 or more years when treated right. If you can't do right by an animal don't keep any.

      I often buy beta's on an impulse due to not being able to see them suffering and near death in pet stores. As a result I have at least three one and one 1.5 gallon tanks in the basement. but for now I only have a female and she lives happily in a 35 gallon community tank. And All of my gallon tanks have lights and filters. True a tank larger than A gallon would be better but at least it's better than tiny bowls and cups.

    Had my Betta(now called Merri after Merry in LOTR) in a smallish fish bowl then cleaned up my ol 5 gallon and prepared it for him. WOW what a difference in behavior! He was swimming inside and around everything, playing. Ye can actually wash ur hands real good and play in the water gently with him if he lets you. Be slow and respect his wishes for distance if he's not ready to swim over or thru your fingers. These fish are the BEST! Nothing tops a S.F.F./Betta! Loads of fun and love! (now my friend's gone I paid attention. AWESOME! Subbed.)

      Just make sure you don't wash your hands with soap right before putting your hands in the water! You can get soap residue in your fish buddy's tank that could be left over after washing your hands, and that can be really bad for him. If you touched something really dirty, wash your hands with soap but wait a while and rinse them off again or something, just to knock loose any extra soap residue.

    My guy has a 10g tank with live plants and a piece of bogwood that looks like a tree root, which forms a little cave. He goes in to this little cave to sleep at night and then comes swimming out if he sees any light, from lamps in the room etc. It's like watching a dog go to sleep in a dog house. He scared the life out of me when he first did it as I thought he had jumped out of the tank and I couldn't see him anywhere until I spotted his little face poking out of his den.

    At the moment, I can only afford a 2.5 gallon office tank for my betta, and I know my betta is not the happiest he can be in a small space, but I'm saving up a small amount for a 10 gallon. Hope he can thrive in there if he lives longer than I anticipate. He's pretty old, and recently suffered from fin rot. He's slowly recovering though. Brave little guy.

    Omg thank you so much for making this video!! I m only 15 but my mum had a Betta fish and a tiny fish tank and I feel so sorry for the poor thing!! I always tell her that it is wrong to keep a betta fish in something like that but she got told by the person she bought him from that they are found in little puddles. But if you really think about it, Betta fish cannot be found there because Puddles evaporate... Then where would the fish go!!?

    I did research the day prior when buying a betta fish. When I was buying my betta I asked the store clerk a few question and she recommended me a 1 gallon tank for a betta. I was like nope. I wanted a male but changed my idea and bought two females. They're really happy in a 10 gallon tank.
