After I spoiled my now deceased cat by feeding her mostly canned cat food,I found out that feeding your cat mostly wet food destroys their teeth. She was only about 3 or 4 when my Dad told me that. Its was too late. She never could eat hardly any dry after she lost most of her teeth. She could not eat enough dry food to stay alive so I had to feed her only wet after that. She's in heaunie from old age. I have two other cats and all they eat is dry. No wet for them. One in great while for a treat.

My local vet allowed me to attend the spay of my rescue dog, Mopsie, a 4 yr old West Highland terrier. I had only had her for a few days then and we had no idea she had been bred a short time before I got her. The spay was just in time as the pup fetuses were just little dots in her ovaries. My vet thought I might get faint but I found it very interesting. Mopsie joined my pack with my other four dogs for many years. I always go to rescue shelters for new pets. It is amazing how many pure breed dogs are dumped at shelters. If you want a specific breed, you should look at the shelters first.

I can actually relate with Willow, I had all my teeth removed last year an I'm only 30 but I couldn't be happier. A chronic illness (that long story short) caused food to just not stay down, an 20+ years of that all my teeth were *destroyed* . An all the constant teeth infections actually allmost cost me my life two years ago an made me go ceptic so we finally just ripped them all out.... or what was left of them that is.

My vet told me my new rescue Catriana would need all her teeth removed due to advanced gum disease. I just looked at her kind of shocked. That's a really major thing to put your baby through, and it just felt wrong somehow. Seeing my shock, the vet said it was unlikely, but possible that little RiRi had a Bartonella infection and we could test for that. If she had bartonellosis, and we treated her successfully, her teeth could be saved. I'm pretty sure the vet expected a negative test result, but as it turned out, RiRi was strongly positive for bartonellosis. About 8 weeks of antibiotics later she was able to keep her teeth and her breath was cat nip fresh. We contacted the rescue to try and find out what had happened. We think Catriana was born with Bartonella. She was the only kitten in her litter born alive, though she seemed healthy enough as a kitten. Other than really bad breath, she'd seemed healthy enough to us too. I'm thankful to our vet for being flexible enough to coddle me a bit. It saved our cat from unnecessary surgery, and had her properly treated that much more quickly.

But I'm very happy to hear that your boy had a much happier life after the same procedure. Tooth pain is awful as a human and I can only imagine how horrible it would be for an animal who couldn't prep their food to make it easier to eat.

    • @anitaslack9193
      @anitaslack9193 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

It's actually easier for a cat because we feed them cat food. Especially with pate-texture food it would be very easy for them to gum it down and still get the nutrition they need. You can also add a little water to kibble and soften it for them. Cat teeth are designed more for tearing than chewing because they're obligate carnivores. If you've ever had your cat throw up right after eating dinner, it looks exactly the same coming out as going in. So they don't lose much with their teeth in terms of eating ability.
Humans, on the other hand, chew most of their food. So when a human loses all of their teeth, it becomes extremely hard for them to eat. Unless they can get dentures or implants, they're stuck on a diet of very soft foods like mashed potatoes, apple sauce, and soft scrambled eggs. It makes it very difficult to get the proper nutrition. I speak of this not from personal experience but from working on a hotline where I take calls almost every day from people complaining that they had all their teeth pulled due to gum disease/decay/etc and are now fighting to get implants or dentures so that they can eat again. And from having two senior cats who have had multiple teeth removed and had absolutely no problem with it.

20:31 having had two labradors, weight was the most important factor in their lives. I was known as the wicked witch when it came to food for them. They got no human food except carrot, peas and apple, mixed in with their dry food. Their dry food was 1/2 a cup of Supercoat in the morning and evening and the carrot/apple treats during the day. Our vet told us, when they were young and weighed 40kg each, that we were killing them with love. So on a diet they went. 8kg lost and they looked so much better. It took ages to lose, but they lived for 12 and 13 years, until cancer got them. So, the moral is learning to say no and meaning it, no matter how much they perform. I hope Dylan led a long and healthy life ❤❤❤❤

I always watched "The Great Dr. Scott on television but it just disappeared from TV one weekend. I adore Dr. Scott and his wife Zoe.....They are such a cute couple. I wish my 2 cats had Dr. Scott as their doctor but unfortunately here where I live the vets just aren't caring like Dr. Scott is.

Why on earth is everyone so freaked out about a routine spay???? It's a relatively minor, common procedure and complications are rare. The "poor baby" routine is ridiculous.

Most spays go without any problems. That's why you do the vet check beforehand, to identify any heart or other issues. Please don't be scared out of spaying

One of my cat's had to get three rotten teeth removed (plus two lose ones causing him pain)
His gingivitis made his breath so RANCID that you could smell it by just petting him.
Poor Willow's breath must have been horrendous, and she must've been in so much pain!

Is spaying and neutering not routine in the UK like it is in the US? Everyone gets a little nervous before any operation but people seem especially anxious about their animals getting desexed on this show. It seems weird to me because it's seen as such a minor and routine procedure in the US. It does seem like ppl in the UK are more likely to buy specific breeds than ppl do in the US so maybe that's why. When you adopt from a shelter the animal is almost certainly already desexed but I see a lot of purebreds on this show.

Thanks to Scotts diagnose for Willows inflamed gums, I now know what my cat's disease is. He's been having really badly inflamed gums all the time, nothing worked at reducing the inflammation and now he's got one tooth left and I can finally put a name to this infection that tortured him for so long.

    Hi Dr Scott
It's very nice to see how you be able to help all or most of the dogs 🐕 coming in your practice.
We are from Iran please make at least one about what's good to feed the dog at home. We don't have so many dogs food here. 😢
    Please teach us.
    Thanks ❤
