I really don't get how people keep breeding these dogs, knowing full well they keep having issues like this. And that the people who are buying these pets don't ever seem to be aware of these issues until their pet almost dies as result. It really upsets me, because there are so many other, equally cute dogs that don't have genetic issues, but because they're not 'pure blood', they get pushed aside.

A century or so ago they used to have a snout. Then someone said it was more aesthetically pleasing a flatter snout and now the poor dogs are paying for it. Same for pugs

Sadly, a huge part of dog breeds have issues because of humans. We’ve bred them to a point that’s absolutely unacceptable for them to have a good quality of life. It’s really really sad 😔

Gotta stop breeding for the super short snout. If breeders would start breeding for Longer snouts than the airway problem can be fixed. Hell most of the negative traits and issues can be fixed if we go back to the old standard. That’s not going to change unless the breed registry groups get on board.
We see this a lot with certain stock horse breeds. Devastating genetic diseases which are now requiring genetic test before a foal can be registered. After all the last thing you want to do is spend thousands of dollars for your dream foal only to find out at 2-3 years old when you start the horse under saddle that it’s skin practically falls off. HERDA is no joke, it’s awful as any rub can cause serious skin damage.

I've had cats for over 50 years. Several of them reached ripe old ages and George is showing all the signs of being a very old cat. I am happy to see that he will spend his last bit of life with loving people. He may never put on weight, even if fed up and when they get very old, they stop grooming so their coats start looking ragged. They should also watch his claws as old cats do not regularly scratch and shed their claws but instead the claws can grow and curl up into their paw pads.

At least they handed him in to the vet rather than just dumping him or euthanizing him. He went to a place where he can be saved. He could have been neglected by accident if you know what I mean, it wasn't a deliberate act but what led to the reason they admitted that couldn't care for him. Even though it's bad he was neglected, they admitted they were incapable of his care and left him where he could be safe

I very much hope that we see more concerted efforts to undo the harms of extreme brachycephalic breeds. Programs such as the one stated in the 1970s which has led to the Olde English Bulldogge, which aims to restore the breed to it's original, athletic form, and rectify the issues of compromised breathing. If anyone is considering an English Bulldog, I would ask to you to please, please consider the (now KC registered) Olde English Bulldogge instead.

People usually see a vet after they get an animal, not before, which makes sense but also doesn't give the vets the chance to warn in advance. The real problems are that laws allow such dogs to be bred and that people buy dogs without doing any kind of research on the breed. Sadly, laws or not, people would still breed them. Look at pit bulls...home insurance and laws don’t protect them AND some counties ban them! Yet, people keep on breeding them, not caring if they get euthanized just for being a pit bull.
Drugs are illegal in America, yet everywhere you look, a meth head is passed out in a parking lot or beating their head against the cement.
Guns- illegal in many places, yet people have them.
So, you just can not stop any one from doing things.

Maybe if the breeders had to start footing the bill for the vet to fix the problem with the French bulldogs breathing, they would reconsider their breeding criteria. Why do they purposely breed for a facial structure that doesn't work? I worked with a woman who bred collies. She was so proud of producing collies with ugly looking long, skinny noses that caused breathing issues.

  • @jaclynh.y767
    @jaclynh.y767 4 ปีที่แล้ว +55

Bulldogs are uniquely bred for their face shape, but this isn't ethical and they tend to have breathing difficulties and other issues (e.g. long tongues) which require painful surgery. Please for the love of God don't get a bulldog or breed bulldogs. Please research on the dog breed's medical tendencies before getting one.

Honey and Honey's owner are so lucky. My dog died on April 21st 2020 because of heart cancer. The vets we took my dog too couldn't understand why he was coughing and throwing up. At the last day before my dog died he had a blue tongue and was foaming at the mouth. We look him to our nearest veterinary emergency place and they even did CPR on his because his heart stopped.. after my dog died at the hospital the vets we went to called back to us. They said it was heart cancer. They told us AFTER my dog died.. Im still frustrated and angry at the vets but im determined if I succeed on becoming a vet I can help other creatures who also has heart cancer like my dog did. And to actually tell the owners about it and what we can do to fix it. That's why I want to become a veterinarian. Im ready to go through whatever it takes to help animals.

@Daniella Thoelen here- "Yes. Most tumors that form in the heart aren't cancerous. But some heart tumors can be cancerous. Cancer that begins in the heart is most often sarcoma, a type of cancer that originates in the soft tissues of the body. Heart cancer (malignant primary cardiac tumor) is extremely rare." From Google and what they said too.

These brachiocephalic (snub nosed) dogs (and cats) have so many problems related to their overbred pushed in snouts. Makes me angry that breeders ignore the health of the animals to breed them to conformities which cause so many health problems. That includes such issues of hip dysplasia and other issues as well.

Poor babies. Most of you are complaining about the smush-nose Frenchie & breeders. But it seems to me that the breeder of the precious Shihi Tzu bears some blame. Honey's problems were congenital. I feel for the little Beagle too. My Cocker & I were avid hikers & she had to have ACL surgery at age 10. The surgery was a great sucess and after healing she went on to hike 3 & a half more years until she had a lens come out of place in her eye. The vet opthalmologist did an experimental procedure & not only did not help her but actually caused her pain. (It was called couching. Never get that). That stopped us. Im glad the Beagle only needs rest.

At age seven, the beagle should be easing her way toward retirement from agility competitions. The older she gets, the worse her knee problems are likely to get and the more prone to injury she'll be. I hope the owner was told off camera that it's time to start planning on slowing down her dog's lifestyle, before this one little problem becomes a chronic or more severe one. The dog's already proven she can hide injuries moderately well. Letting her continue working at the same pace at that age is asking for trouble.

I blame the kennel clubs as they have wanted many breeds of dogs to their standards and then the dogs have suffered with lots of defects... Personally I think the rspca or other animal protection groups should get involved and prosecute the breeder or the ones that cause these defects in dogs

Why was it ok, in light of Honey’s heart problems, to anesthetize Honey for the specialist’s procedures when it was not permitted for the original needle biopsy? The specialist didn’t even mention the issue!
