    I’ve found that mixing my poppy seeds with a fair amount of flour or sand in a large mason jar helps to more evenly disperse them over your growing area...if that makes sense. The danish flag variety have been my favorite to grow. Lauren’s grape is also gorgeous. Happy growing!

    I had sowed poppy’s and larkspur like you showed us! I had to put a little fence around it for I have a rescue cur that smells/notices EVERYTHING I do in the garden (I cant use bio tone or he digs everything up 🤦‍♀️) ANYWAY It just snowed a little yesterday in zone 7a and my little plot for them looks JUST LIKE A GIANT FOOTPRINT. Looks like Mother Nature took a step in my flower bed 🦶 I love it!!! Thank you again Brie for making these videos I can’t wait to see how my garden flourishes because of your seasoned advice 😊

    We compost our own soil. I am disabled so I can't do much. But the flower beds and pots I do have are doing very well. I sowed poppy seeds in my garden from a spring seed mix. After adding fresh compost to my garden patch, I scattered the seeds mostly around one area, because I have a wide variety of plants in my small garden, and some of them will bloom through summer and into the fall. Half of my garden is in almost full shade. And the other side gets a few hours of direct sunlight. I designed my garden in a circle, with a small path weaving through the center, so that I could tend to the flowers , weeds, soil and bulbs when I need to, without having to step down on the area where my flowers are blooming.
    My shorter flowers are in the front of the bed, and my taller plants and flowers are in the center and twords the back . The back is the part of the bed that gets the most shade. This is my first time growing poppies. I did use a little hay on top of the seeds to keep the rain from washing them away. I have a lot of seeds germinating. I don't know which ones if any are poppies. I hope I sowed them early enough. Next year I am going to try to sow some in the winter . I may try to keep some of the poppies because I know they can grow back the next year.
    Thank you for your educational video on planting poppies. When I set my goals to achieving , I don't give up easily.

    I have a jar of sand with poppy seeds from last year, that I found in the freezer. They were from a garden in New Straitsville if I recollect correctly. The ones I sowed did not come up. I read that scattering them with sand was the best way. I have very little space in the garden, so I have to scatter them somewhere. I have some white poppy seeds I might add. got them at a foreign grocery.

Also, I've been wondering how you edge the different beds. I'm renovating a garden. I prefer beds edged with something to keep the grass/clover out and keep my work easier. This is a garden in upstate NY., zone 5. Could you ever do a segment just on edging? Thanks & glad I found you via Jim Putnam.

    Are there specific varieties of poppies that are better suited to winter sowing? Have you tried winter sowing Iceland poppies? Do you have issues with wind blowing away your seeds before they get a chance to germinate?

    • @BrieThePlantLady
      @BrieThePlantLady  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No the seed is heavy enough that rind does not blow it away. In my experience all poppies benefit from the cold chill, hence the late fall sowing recommendation.

    Wow!!! Looks like heaven!!! Can you please answer these questions:::
    1. Why my poppy plants wilted in the sun eventhough its soil is moist?
    2. Its also super thin and falling on the ground?
    3. My poppy plants leaves are too small and turning yellow.
    Sorry for too many questions.

    • @BrieThePlantLady
      @BrieThePlantLady  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure about your wilting poppy... make sure the soil is really well saturated, as it has been very dry so even if the surface is wet it could be dry in the root zone.
      Hmm, actually it sounds to me like your poppies may have some sort of disease. All of those symptoms point to some bigger problem. Perhaps pull one out and inspect the tap root. It should be solid and white. If it has brown lesions or is malformed that would explain the poor performance.
      I haven't experienced any poppy specific disease, so I would contact your local extension or send a material sample in for more details.

    Will my "breadseed" poppies flower?
    Its mid September in Montana and the first sign of autumn has arrived(chilly mornings). The poppies are in mid to late lettuce stage(started indoor in fabric pots in April or May), but arent showing signs of pods down in the center. They are very healthy and look great(in fact they are the largest healthiest Ive ever grown..8 years of growing in California, just moved to Montana) So what do you think? Will they flower? 130-160 days since seedlings. Seems a little long to not show any signs of pods.

      Hopefully- but I’m not sure but it’s worth a try. But for future reference, I I recommend fall planting for everyone in zones 6-8 for a showy spring display.

    I've been mulching over my soil (my very sandy soil) for years now and have never added any soil amendments. The only things I've added (as a mulch) have been leaves and twigs/logs and whatever else plant matter is mixed into the yard waste I pick up every year. My soil is now very biologically active with an abundance of soil life, including earthworms which could not live in the sandy soil I had to start with, so I'm really curious how my soil would compare to Soil3. I live in Jax, Fl, about a mile from the ocean in zone 9a.

    I threw a pack of poppy seeds that I got from a Cheerios box on my hard red soil and now for the third year they grow like a weed. I have no clue why.

      That’s great! Coming from a cereal box, I’m betting they are not this species, P. somniferum. More likely P. rhoes which is a bit easier to establish but equally charming.

    Enjoyed the video but I find it hard to follow the progress. In the video you say that you will "show the results". I have been sifting through all the videos but cannot find the video of the comparison that you mention. Would be helpful if you included a link to the future results you mention. A bit frustrating trying to find the video.

      I’m not sure- I say try and see! If they don’t grow then remember to sow in November. Generally this advice in this video is accurate for zones 6-8.

    • @BrieThePlantLady
      @BrieThePlantLady  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it is too late. I did a sowing experiment video a few weeks ago abd nothing has germinated. At least in the southeast us, poppies really need the winter season to grow as they did when it gets hot. Plan to sow them in late November for the best results.

      Most Poppies do not transplant plant. That’s why you need to direct seed them. Has nothing to do with your climate. Follow these instructions for direct seeding instead of buying plants in pots.

    People make growing poppies way too hard to prepare the soil get rid of most of the weeds sprinkle seeds on the top of the soil ,the seeds are small so dont over do it. First week of April here in Washington is a good planting time , I have grown poppies since 1980.Always look for next years crop some of mine are still blooming!
