    Thank you Rachel for the great tips on sewing poppies. Sewing them in rows, what a good idea. I am sure l weed out my little seedling. So l am going to try that idea with other things as well. 👏😁🦋🐝

      Poppies are great to have. They bring such a sense of gaiety. Hope the rows work well for you.

    Cant wait to get mine going. I live in Oklahoma where it gets oppressively hot and humid in summer (had a heat index of 120F degrees last year) so I'm starting them as early as possible. Tried some fall sowing last October but I only have what I think are a few rosettes so far this year. Now I'm working on the soil in several other places.

    Good video about planting poppy seeds. I would imagine that combining oriental poppies (or even just annual poppies) with peonies in a section of border would be amazing, they both flower at roughly the same time of year and have very big flowers.

      To tell the truth, I find oriental poppies very thuggish and have stopped growing them. The flowers are beautiful though.

    At the 'other house', I always had orange and yellow Californian Poppies naturalised in the front garden. I just used to scatter the seeds on the gravel beds when rain was due - this washed the seeds down where they could geminate. Some years they would 'self-seed' and some years, they even survived the Winter and carried on blooming the following year. I may try and get them going again here in the new place.

      Califoenia poppies are great if you have poor soil and lots of sun. Hope you get them established in your new place. Beautiful sunny colours!

      Best of luck. FYI this info isn't for the Californian poppy. The Californian poppy needs very well-drained soil and full sun. Let me know how it works!

    I like to plant annual poppies and cornflowers (Centaurea) in the early fall, so that the plants are about three or four inches across when winter sets in. The plants will survive through the winter and get an early start to bloom early next year. Be sure to plant again in spring, because the plants from last fall will reach their peak, go to seed, and die in early summer, so you want a second crop to replace them for late summer and fall bloom.

      I like to plant them soon, too. Please can you tell me if you are in England, and if so, what month do you plant poppies & cornflowers? Sept or Oct? Thanks. 😊🙏

    • @emmitstewart1921
      @emmitstewart1921 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wemuk5170 I'm in Canton Ohio,USA. I plant them in September because I want to give them time to sprout and grow some before winter sets in, which happens in November here. Once up, both species are hardy here where winters often reach zero degrees Fahrenheit.

    I inadvertently sowed them in March, guess I should've realized I would have. I took a couple of wildflower seedpacks and put them in propagators, in order to plant them as plug plants directly into grass. Only last month I realized what all the plants are when I downloaded an app for identifying plants. My wildflower/flower area is complete now and everything is planted, some are already flowering or in the case of Phacelia, about to.

  • @FernandaNascimentoOrchids
    @FernandaNascimentoOrchids 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do they self propagate from their seeds like the wild ones do or are they infertile ? Thanks 🙏❤️

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, Fernanda, they self-seed well. No problems there.

    Are they stratified?In Ohio I plant in Feb so mine get a good chill

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      By sowing in April the weather should take care of stratification for these poppies.

      How do the ones sewed in Feb look? I love in Indiana and tossed some in mid-late March and some in mid April iv not had much success with poppies so tried a few different methods but they all seem like they've stopped growing as seedlings

    Its such a cold May. Can i still sow poppies?

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  ปีที่แล้ว

      In Ireland I would sow them now. Sometimes they don't germinate until next year but the seed supposedly stays viable in the ground for 100s of years.

  • @JohnSmith-fq7hj
    @JohnSmith-fq7hj 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    All the vids make it seem so simple but I swear poppies just don't want to make it easy lol. I've tried a few different times with no success. One year they made it halfway were all about a foot tall, and looked ok one night then next day I went to check and every single one died for no apparent reason smh. This year I went all out and bought like 30 seed packs. I put them in different areas, used different methods to sew, different times, different soil types and varying mixes I hope they work this time.

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to hear all that. I wonder if a late frost was the culprit on the year when they all suddenly just died!

      @JohnSmith-fq7hj 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GardeningatDouentza so I have a lot of them this year that seem to be laying on their sides I mean the leaves are upward but the stems are super thin and kinda laying sideways will they be able to make it like that? I know some flowers actually do but can a poppy hold itself up like that?
