    Catch me practicing genderfluid over and over. I am so greatful to you for making this video. I'm not deaf but I sign a lot because sometimes I have trouble expressing things in words or my anxiety gets the best of me and so it's great that I can continue to jokingly call my fiends straight :)

    Thank you so much for this. I am taking ASL at my high school and realized that a lot of the ASL 2 class is part of the lgbt+ community. So I started looking for some queer signs just to learn them. Once I watched all of your videos and knew the signs I asked if I could teach on one of our free days. My teacher suprisingly said yes, so next week I get to teach all of our ASL 2 classes lgbt+ signs. It is really exciting and I can't wait.

    Thank you so much for this! I’ve been trying to help my 8 year old (and myself) learn to sign. They are non-binary so I’ve been looking for signs to help them with the binary aspect of learning from classes and books (boy/girl, brother/sister, mom/dad, etc) as well as queer pride signs. I also found this in terms of non-binary: “This sign is the signs for “not” and “binary” put together. Make a thumbs up and move your thumb from under your chin to away from your chin. Then make a peace sign with both hands (make a fist without your pointer and middle fingers) and tap your matching fingertips together.” This was very useful seeing as at this age my kid’s spelling abilities are pretty much nonexistent. I’m about to check out the rest of your channel, but if you have not done so, can you do a video for gender neutral signs? Things like parent, child, grandparent, person, etc. Some of these seem to be debatable as well.

      That's fantastic! I think that can be a good alternative while fingerspelling isn't a strong point. Though I'm not sure how I feel about that sign, I've seen it before. That sign for binary is also used to mean pair, partner (in specific contexts), couple (in a romantic context), etc... I'd love it (and much prefer) if there was a single sign to mean nonbinary, because I feel like that identity shouldn't rely on having the prefix of "not" in it.

    So my signing is hecking rough, but I was trying to figure out how to sign "asexual" to my friend and I ended up making up my own for it - make a circle with your hand, make it bigger and then split it into two circles 😂 I know we can't self replicate yet but god dam, I'm working on it. I dunno, I felt like a genius, we can finger spell ace but I thought the double and split was funny

    Hey Rogan, I've just come across your videos and want to thank you so much :) I'm from Australia so we use Auslan here, not ASL, but given the amount of loan signs that Auslan has from ASL it's great to look at what ASL has for all these "new" terms. If I tell my friends about you and your channel, what pronouns do you use? I'd have assumed he/him but I saw in another video that you are grey-gender, so I thought I'd double-check

    My (hearing, non-signing) daughter identifies as asexual. Would you fingerspell this? I've been practicing my ASL around her... her "sign" for "asexual" is rather more humerous than fingerspelling, but I'm new at learning ASL and am not sure if that would be appropriate if I shared that with my deaf friend. (Personally, I think she'll think it's hilarious, but I'd hate to offend!)

    The first version of 'queer' I learned was a gesture like brushing your hair over your ear with just your middle finger, but the person who told me that said it was very much a reclaimed derogatory word - I'm having trouble finding anything about that sign now, though. Any knowledge of that way of signing queer?

    • @RoganShannon13
      @RoganShannon13  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that sign is a derogatory sign that's been reclaimed, and to only be used by the queer community itself. I believe Alex Leffers says that in his video of LGBTQ+ signs.

    • @RoganShannon13
      @RoganShannon13  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pronouns in ASL are all the same - just a finger pointing to the person, into neutral space, or to yourself. "They" is the same if you're referring to one person, but if you're talking about a group, the pointer finger does a sweeping motion to indicate more than one person.

    • @RoganShannon13
      @RoganShannon13  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have, and I'm not sure why I didn't include fingerspelling for that word in this video. Here, I'm mainly showing what is out there, what people use, for the knowledge of people who watch this video. I personally have mixed use of fingerspelling and rainbow, I tend to spell more than use the rainbow now. I find it depends on the context, who I'm talking to.
      I completely understand where Drago is coming from, and I definitely agree that we need to remember the history behind the word, because that is extremely important for the thriving of our community. Queer history is one of my areas of interest, and I know I still have so much more to learn. I'm still blown away by how little a lot of queer people know (not their fault!), and want to make more videos specifically about queer history.
      I was signing "rainbow" well before this post, since around 2015, because it's what they use in International Sign, and I was just tired of spelling it all the time (at the time, I was studying abroad, using the word A LOT and very done with fingerspelling because I'd gotten used to International Sign not fingerspelling much). However, I would LOVE to see a specific sign created for this word, and I will happily use it when one comes up! Same goes for nonbinary!
      I can't find DQRC's post, but I found Drago's original post for those who want to read it: facebook.com/dragonsani/posts/10156689375450428

      @RoganShannon13  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Confused why Asexual is ACE. There is no C in the word. ?

      You're right that there's no C, but it's a phonetic shortening of the word. Ase sounds pretty much the same as ace, so people use that because people know how to pronounce ace, but not ase and ase isn't a real word.

      It's an umbrella term for people who identify as neither male nor female.
