  • I talk a little about another sign for trans that's fairly recent, and why I will never use it.

    It's nonsense that anyone in NYC signs what they suggested. Thanks for this, Rogan! Next time someone tries to sign that incorrectly to me, I'll send them this video instead of having to explain (yet again).

    Thanks for giving the historical background on these signs! Very interesting and very important.

    Hi. I wanted to thank you for this specific video. I'm not deaf myself. But I have ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). I was taught basic ASL when I started school because of my difficulties with communication. When I "officially" came out to my parents I had a hard time explaining things verbally. But a deaf gay friend of mine helped me learn signs specific to the queer community. So, your videos (and those of TH-camrs like you) have helped me more than I have words for. Thank you.

    Fascinating! 1) I know trans people in New York who sign the common way, so meh to that person, ugh cis people trying to define things for us. 2) The thing about direction is interesting because I do move *slightly* down when I sign it, just as a function of how my hand moves when I twist my wrist, but the important part of the motion for me is that it's going to my chest. In other words, like you said, it's internal, it's about identity, it's about what is inside. So the downward part isn't really what I pay attention to when I see that sign!

      Yeah, that's fine when it's part of natural motion. But she was moving it down very intentionally, and far more than just a smidge.

    I never even knew there was an issue with the sign. I learned it with an open to close movement like that so I'm comfortable signing that way. Nothing negative in my point of view. Trans is beautiful 🌈💓

    Edit: If people want another source on this information, here's a video from Britton in 2018 (unfortunately not captioned) - th-cam.com/video/klQot3OoJ-g/w-d-xo.html

    Transsexual, trans, transgender are typically the same sign - trans. Let me explain a little bit about the history of that sign. The old sign is [shows sign]. It means changing sex, and for us, we don't feel that's appropriate. We're not changing our sex, we're changing our bodies to fit our identity. So... Oh, another sign - [T-G]. It looks like no good [N-G]. That doesn't fit us obviously. We were struggling to find the right sign. So we got together at the RAD (Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf) conference in 2003. It just happened that there was a large number of trans people there. We got together and said we need to discuss a sign. One woman, a trans woman from Europe who grew up in Spain, has traveled to different places in Europe, checking out all their signs. She saw different ones - [demonstrates a couple]. I can't remember, there were a lot of different ones. Then she said trans. We asked her what that means. It means who you are on the inside, that's your identity. No one can change it, it's inside of you. It doesn't matter what the outside looks like, your identity is here [inside of you]. Cherished. Regardless of surgery, hormones, whatever, or you decide not to, that doesn't matter. That's still your identity here [on the inside], no matter what you look like. So that's why it's signed trans. We tend to use that for in general, anything. So it can include trans, transgender, transsexual, and so on, all the different words. All under one sign, trans. If you want to know more information about that person, ask them directly. Everyone's a little different, identities are a little different.

    Brilliant video Rogan. Really interesting, I’ll keep it bookmarked in case I ever see people signing Trans that way.

    Is there regional signs for transgender? I have seen many people from different areas sign it all the same way. There is this gentleman on tiktok who signs it starting from his head and going to opposite shoulder. It looks like the sign “to make up” and goes to a “T” on the shoulder. They said the original sign for transgender in their area (North Carolina I believe) means something negative/not good but they would not specify. So I am curious if you know their are other ways to sign transgender? Or is this the only one? Should people who are not transgender get to decide what can be regional and what can’t?

      As far as I know, there's only one "official" sign for trans, and that's the one I showed in this video because it was discussed and agreed upon by a group of Deaf trans people. That's part of why it's the same across the US. The person you mention, I've never seen that sign before. Do you happen to remember their TikTok name?

    I'm a beginner and I'm transgender, transbian and poly. Would you please make a video going slower. I really want to learn to sign.

      If you go to "settings" on the video player, and click "playback speed," you can actually slow the video down yourself!

    I agree, I like that sign for transgender that you introduced and why you don't like the traditional sign for it

    • @RoganShannon13
      @RoganShannon13  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Er... I'm not sure I understand? The sign that's closing, like beautiful, is the "traditional" sign. The one that's opening is not, it's a newer one.
