Retired Army helicopter pilot Bruce Crandall finally received a Medal of Honor for his actions in a battle in Vietnam over 40 years ago. He talks with Jerry Bowen. (CBSNews.com)
he was corageous and a hero...there's a difference between the two to live thru what he did was a miracle in itsself and if you've never lived thru similar you'd understand but sadly many didn't get past events...war is hell and more..airmobile
@MrGar1966 Thank you. I love my grandpa just got to visit him in seattle a little while ago. Im going up again on the 4th of december but its for my grandma's funeral. Since you met her you know how special she was, say a prayer for her and my grandpa its a tough time for him and im sure he could use it.
When your Grand parents were in Midland, your Grandmother had pictures from the set of "We Were Soldiers". The second time I saw here she had some more that Greg Kinnear had sent them of his newborn. She was so proud! It was like it was her own! Prayers and thoughts...
@amigodemoose Andrew, I met your Grandpa and your Grandmother twice. He came to speak at the Petroleum Club in Midland, Texas about 8 years ago. A good friend of mine, a Vietnam Veteran helicopter pilot, asked him to come. I spoke with both of them at length. The sweetest, humble, caring people. Bruce was a hoot! told the funniest stories...he could really "spin a yarn" I feel truly blessed to have met such a great man and a true hero to this country!
Great American hero, long overdue for the MoH, just glad he received it and has it now. The actual deeds he performed can't be told in words, but the facts can be established. Incredible valor and bravery, he was there for his comrades, his fellow Americans on the ground, at the crisis of the battle, and kept them in the fight. His head is crowned with imperishable Laurels won. 🇺🇲
bruce talked about a copilot in his chopper that was shot in the neck while he was at the LZ....I gotta say I'd shit my pants if someone died right next to me and I had no way to defend myself except raise the chopper into the air, but he couldn't just leave if they didn't get the supplies off / wounded on first..Very brave man.
Please let your Granfather know that our hearts and prayers are with him. The James' from Midland, Texas are my good friends. That is how I know your Grandparents. God bless and take care...
Every hero is born as is every human being. Heroes are made in the moment. The difference between a hero and a coward is overcoming the fear of the moment and acting accordingly. The same argument is made about leaders and the answer is the same, leaders are born like everyone else, but a real leader is the result of learning and experience which culminates in extraordinary actions.
Book, WE WERE SOLDIERS ONCE...AND YOUNG by Lt.Gen H.Moore & J.Galloway, also the movie starring Mel Gibson.Bruce Crandall was played by actor Greg Kinnear. He was the commander of Alpha Company of the 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion that flew in Moore's 1st battalion,7th cavalry to LZ X-ray in the Ia Drang Valley of Sth Vietnam on Nov 1965. If it wasn't for Crandall flying out the wounded & flying in ammo/water, the Americans would have been slaughtered
Please you do not have to support them, but we implore you to respect them, unknown Americans like him has gave us the privilege of speaking out, I can not tell you to quit or stop expressing yourself in that matteras a matter of fact we put our Behinds in danger to allow you to be able to speak your mind, but he received the Congressional Medal of Honor, he deserved a little respect, my fellow brother American

i think it is sad, as a soldier, that a draft dodger put that medal around his neck. this man, along with all the others that participated in the battle of ia drang from the 1/7th Cavalry, are heroes. he deserved better than to recieve his medal from w.
@JohnQuincyAdams1 I dunno what the big deal is when you say US never lost a battle. They never destroyed the NVA either. The NVA and VC inflicted terrible and tremendous losses so I don't see what kind of a "victory" that is. The VC/NVA chose the time when to fight and retreated when they saw the US were too strong. In the end, that strategy won over the US and the Americans withdrew abandoning their Vietnamese allies to to the communists
He is absolutely right about if we all got what we deserve, we would have been born in Hell. We are all enemies of the Living and True God and are deserving of His justice for our rebellion and hatred of Him. Thank God that he sent His Son in the likeness of human flesh to suffer and die, the just for the unjust and taking upon Himself the wrath and punishment that we deserve. Through Him alone we have forgiveness of our sins and the imputed Righteousness of Christ so that we who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ are reconciled to Him as His adopted children. Bless God that what Christians deserved for their sin and rebellion was paid in full on the Cross of Calvary by the Savior of His people, the Lord Jesus Christ.

@JohnQuincyAdams1 Again you seem to ignore the REAL cost to America. Vietnam got their independence after fighting off foreign armies for 30 years. They would gladly trade lives for that. The US on the other hand was in turmoil after losing the Vietnam War. Economy was in tatters. Pres. Johnson was humiliated. American society was torn between those who supported the war and those that saw it as it really was - an unjust war. It cost America far more than what it cost Vietnam.
He is so humble! So brave, and he will say, I was just doing my job. He is a wonderful fella.
A giant amongst great men.
Truly an awe inspiring American legend
I salute him and all the other guys who served their country.

If the United States had to attack Mainland Japan a million or more American young men would have died decisions were made the war ended
