  • The scene leading up to the crop duster moment begins with Roger Thornhill waiting on the side of a desolate road in Indiana for the elusive George Kaplan. It is devoid of any music. Hitchcock is credited for opting out of any music for the entire scene until the plane hits the tanker truck. And arguably, it was a brilliant move which is now part of movie history. But a cue was written by Bernard Herrmann and never used. So being curious, I decided to add the cue to the scene and see how it would play. It's a textbook Herrmann score, but is it better than no music at all? You decide.

Anything that Hermann does is by definition amazing. The music lends to the aequence an eeerie, unreal quality, which I personally find awesome. On the other hand, stripping the scene entirely of its score lets it hang completely in the air, no guide of the time passing by, no real coherence of the montage - it makes it even more disturving and serves an even greater prepararion for THE re-entry of the music at the plane collision with the fuel truck.

I prefer it with the music.
