    Grover isn't supposed to know all of those things. He's not supposed to be THE guy at this point. The best advice I can say is to let em cook.
    And we might disagree, but i love the way each villain is being portrayed. Medusa was played very well, I loved the ominous vibes of Echidna, because she set the tone and the kids didnt know what to do, more so when they realized who she is.
    I can agree about the oracle, and the fast pacing. But the biggest thing that I'm doing is that the books were made in a vacuum of each, where the shows can now split the story all over the seasons, and things that will come into play into later seasons. I trust in the vision of Uncle Rick overall, and I think him getting to redo the structure of the entire story has been really cool to see.
    But i think what you are wanting vs what people are going to get are going to be very different. It's a show meant for a younger audience vs if it was done for teens or even young adults.

    I feel like people are impatient to let the story unfold. "We need to know this that and this other thing?" I've never read the books but it feels like theyre building up to showing us what the stakes are, like we're taking the ride along with him. Things are explained as he goes. He's gaining knowledge as he travels. He has no idea how crazy a battle of the gods would be, like let them hit us in the sternum with that later. Things are steadily being flushed out making me want to know more and too many shows give everything too fast so I like the info drops.

      I'm only comparing it to information we already have at this point in the book. That information has to be squeezed in somewhere and doing it in the final act might be clunky. Won't know until we see it.

    I reaaaally think youre downplaying grovers role as an empathic and emotional support for both annabeth and percy literally last episode they wouldnt have been able to properly communicate their feelings to one another without grover being there to mediate and act as glue for both of them. And again this episode grover acts as a subtle glue for both of them since he has history with both. Even in the books his role serves more as thebsupport to the main characters than anyone who stands out with skills because without grover annabeth wouldnt get along and neither would survive

    I think the most glaring issue with the show is the length of the episodes, make each one an hour- keep some of the pacing, keep the changes but add more detail, give the characters more time, cut away from the main characters and do build up that way (in addition the cut away scenes they already have in there). I do think this suffers from the pg rating really fudged it too. I do think that the trio are wonderfully played and have amazing chemistry.

    Seems like they’re choosing to spread out the lore across the show (fates are in the preview of the next episode) and while the episodes have felt short the back half of the book is much more plot heavy, so prehaps they’ll be much longer going forward. Will have to wait and see.

    Most Disney plus tv show doesn't have episodes longer than 45 mins.
    If that's the base rule, the writers will then have to work around that hurdle.

Part of why I was glad this was getting a TV show, was to correct that and well, yeah, somehow it's still rushed. I don't really think the show is relying on book knowledge. Really interesting to hear your thoughts whilst reading the book upto this point. It's been a long, long time since I read them but I've also got enough in the back of my memory to fill in gaps and not notice them - so I really appreciate the thoughts you've brought. This is a weird show. What's adapted is great, really well done, really well shown, really well produced. I'm starting to see the weirdness as the almost arbitrary choice of what was adapted and what was left out. It's like they picked out key scenes and mapped them out against the episode count and didn't really have a feel of connective tissue between them. It's a very rare thing, this is both a great adaptation and a bad one. In terms of what has been brought to screen and how carefully it's been produced and the cast and the absolutely beautiful CGI it hits it out the park compared to many others. It also brings excitement and some heart. The really short episode length though cripples what they can actually bring to the screen which hobbles the adaptation. I'm still really glad it's been made with such love even if some studio decisions gave it a limitation. Maybe if the next book gets greenlit for adaptation they'll have more confidence and give them a bit more time to breathe and adapt the more character bits.

      adapting 100% of the story and adapting, maybe 25%, of the story arent the same thing. disney has the power, budget and resources to increase episode length and count, infact its quite literally their decision to have such a short runtime. longer episodes can easily fix most of the problems in the show, including pacing, world building, and having actual conversational dialogue, maybe getting the characters personalities correct.
      Also, nitpicking is small things like, "in the books, percy and sally eat a lot of different types of blue food, but in the show its just a small bag of blue beans." not "Hey, why would the producers of the show decide to have short episodes, but then rush through 40% of the books in 2 episodes. they cut out a lot of world building, and general character arc details.

    I'm sure we're getting a S2 so I hope they fix this by then, or that at least we don't have another silly run of 20-ish minutes, which is how long this ep was without the recap and credits.

    This seems like an unpopular opinion, but I completely agree with nerdy's assessment on the first 2 episodes, the tone feels off, very little is actually explained, and it feels like we don't know the characters well enough, it's not bad, but as a fan of the books, it doesn't live up to the enjoyment I got from the source material. So glad Nerdy had the same opinion, because I felt like I was the only one. Thanks for your honest thoughts!
    Also, to those who say "let the story play out", while you could explain more things later down the line, it is still to the detriment of the show because you spend a lot of it as a viewer confused and bewildered. Try to watch the first episodes as if you know nothing about the books, from a new viewers perspective, I think things would be very confusing.

    The show suffers from the 8 episode curse like so many shows on streaming these days. If the show had two more episodes it could have dedicated those to spending more time in Camp Halfblood, but as it stands the remaining four episodes are each going to cover CRITICAL plot beats that need to have a full episode dedicated each (as did Medusa, as did Echidna and the fall from the St. Louis Arch). The fact that everything from the Camp Halfblood section of the book gets condensed into just episode 2 is a huge pacing issue and it leads to the first two episodes feeling rushed as all hell. I wish streaming platforms would stop skimping on episodes and give seasons a full 10 or 12 episodes instead of barely skirting by on 8.
    EDIT: Also to clarify, I don't agree with all of Nerdy's criticisms (or even most of them, I think he's nitpicking) but I do think the adaptation suffers from being so few episodes. I don't think the solution is longer episodes, because most of the story beats don't need an hour, they only need the 30 minutes or so that we're getting, but we needed a few more episodes to breathe early on and to establish the world and the tone. Beyond that, I still love this adaptation dearly and think it's a great job. I believe that as the seasons go on it will only get better and better

      This isn't always true, but in almost all instances that the show/film is better than the book, it's because the book wasn't very good. If the bar set by the book isn't too high, it is much easier to clear it.
      I think, in part, it's just that most books have stories that are best told as books. You'll also find that most novelisations of films are worse than the films, because again, the film's story was conceptualised as a visual product.

I remember being a kid, and not really caring if a plot was 100% thought out. Because I and a lot of other kids didnt see the world that way. The books were kind of the same way. It wasn't until Titans curse that the story became more mature and slowly grew with the reader. So kindly stop overthinking everything. You are actively taking fun away from yourself. Read the book and still a hater lol. Reading a few chapters in or even the first book won't give you the perspective of the people who's been done reading and re-reading for a while now. Sure it makes sense in the first book. But then you catch the inconsistencies along the way that the show finally fixed.
    9:17 a third in for what? 😭 You can't beat an _unknown_ monster with 3 lucky stabs, what. That would be more stupid lol. That opportunity would be best wasted on an escape like they did. Enchida wasn't their priority anyway.
    9:49 He's already doing more than book grover :) You'd rather him moan about food and chewing on cans nervously? Didn't he pass out in the book when the car crashed and Percy had to carry him? No hate on book-Grover but I'm not letting this show-Grover slander slide.
    An adaptation is and shouldn't be a word for word anyway. You complained that in the book Grover had a bigger purpose for coming and in the show he was there coz Percy just chose him. But it's ..true that he was literally only in the quest _because_ Percy chose him. He _couldn't_ have volunteered for extra points (which they gain by getting a demigod into the camp safely, the stronger the demigod the better bc that means you've protected them from countless monsters). So being a searcher isn't even why Grover came, he came because Percy's his friend. The Searcher of Pan thing? _Every_ satyr has that dream and Grover has been aiming for it even before Percy arrived so giving that information like it's crucial when it isn't for the 1st books plot, is just redundant. Especially since (spoiler) that's covered in the second book, _that_ one covers Grover. _This_ is about Percy. And another book is for Annabeth. SO they're still just teasing that; The cloven council in the second ep where he gets evaluated, him telling Percy about the Searchers, a sprinkle of his uncles journey, it's all just foreshadowing and that's how it should be.

    I’m glad you are reading the book. I like the criticism of the Disney adaptation but the jokes in the first few watch throughs were rough because I knew you were missing a lot of knowledge and background.

    As far as I can tell having Disney create this show was a great disservice to Riordan's books.

      Doesn't mean the author can't mess up. Writing a book isn't the same thing as writing a script. Rowling proved that with Fantastic Beasts. Not every author can translate well what they wrote in a book into a script.

      Yes he is. And he has chosen to change a few things and slowly introduce the world. Adaptation is hard but this is a pretty darn good one tbh and I’m a big reader who had seen many shitty Ones. This is not It

      @@maciedixon3983so true, I always get frustrated when I hear for Percy Jackson “but in the books” yet they are such small changes in the grand scheme of things.

    I've not read the books, but my biggest question about Percy and the Quest, was, why is he so against going on the quest? Like I get that he couldn't give a rats ass about the Master Bolt and his father, so screw them I'm not going on their quest. But he's the only person who cares about his mother, and can go on the quest, so him being against it felt so...cliche' and confusing, and nonsensical.

    • @amby8719
      @amby8719 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      that’s what happened? he didn’t care about the quest until grover revealed that his mother is where they’re supposed to retrieve the master bolt. then that’s when percy agreed to go.

    • @pinsandneedles3
      @pinsandneedles3 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Percy didn't care about the quest at first. *Then* Grover revealed that Percy might be able to bring back his mother while in the Underworld and Percy's *immediate* reaction was "when do we leave?" I don't know how this could be any clearer in the show.
