    It's amazing how little Plastic Man's look changed. They nailed it from the very start it seems. He's one of my favourite characters and so underrated, this guy could defeat many heavy hitters!

      @ProjektTaku 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

      same with Shazam for me. I think the only time his look has ever changed was with the new 52, but it seems their going back to the classic design, which imo works way better.
      The sash, the armbands, the draping cape off to one side, all work to create a classic and simple yet unique design that I believe is unmatched.

      @ThePongzilla 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      That’s what I was amazed by too. If there ever been a change it’s something that was very unnoticeable or has changed back.

    • @darkhero-3097
      @darkhero-3097 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Yeah, it’s great! I think the only thing that’s been visibly changed is that sometimes artists give him shorter sleeves, but even then most other artists are on point

    • @yamataichul

      To me he always looked "dated" and a product of his time in the best way possible (like Popeye). _Does his design and vibe really have to change?_ No.
      I love how DC embraced him and never altered him much. His costume is so unique and good it would be a federal crime to reinvent it.
      ... I can't say the same for Aquaman 😂

    Plastic Man creator Jack Cole had another memorable piece of art. Under the name Jake Cole he drew cartoons for Playboy Magazine, starting in 1954. He would release a famous set of cocktail napkins that became collectibles. The set was called "Females by Cole" and depicted young sexy women "who mesmerized the dim, old saps who lusted after them".

    • @TitularHeroine
      @TitularHeroine 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I got a box of those napkins, complete, from a used book store and gifted them to a friend. Some decent jokes in those actually! Now that I know it's Jack Cole's work that makes sense. Thanks!

    It would be cool if you did this for some other panels that have been memed, like some of the Moon Knight edits (particularly the one calling Dracula a f***ing nerd), the Iron Man "solid dick" panel, and, of course, "Fool! Doom toots as he pleases!"

      But there's always the classic Starfire panel, "Dick! I love Dick!!"

  • @kingdomcomesuperman3669

    I love Plastic Man comics for how expressive the artists can get with his powers and general zany tone, especially from Cole, Baker, and Staton & Smith. Shame though that a lot of his mainstream appeal is just gushing about his "underrated" high potential but that's the power scaling salt in me talking.

  • @d-manthecaptain1382

    Here's hoping this is only the beginning of her covering Plastic Man, he's so neat, and I feel that while Superman and Batman's history is pretty well known, Plastic Man doesn't get nearly as many videoes talking about a classic issue, or a wild thing that happened, or how a character was created. Which is odd, since for as obscure as he is, the internet really loves him, he's becoming more mainstream everyday, it seems

    • @jimgillespie6109
      @jimgillespie6109 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      The thing is, he didn't used to be that obscure. Back in the '60s, a character on a TV series would occasionally make a reference to him, the same way the Gomer Pyle character would exclaim "SHAZAM!" on his show.

  • @darkhero-3097

    I remember seeing a compilation of this meme staring off with the panel "salt that makes you say what ".From there it just kept getting more surreal in the panels with him consuming the panel itself at one point. It was a good time glad to see it's origin!

  • @roberth.9664
    @roberth.9664 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    The most interesting thing about this to me is that the origin of this panel edit is from a form about a series that would make multiple crossover comics and movies with DC in the future. If only Plasticman was in those crossovers then it would almost feel like destiny.

  • @dennismason3740
    @dennismason3740 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Wally Wood, artist extraordinaire, did the art for Mad Magazine's parody of Plastic Man. 1960? Every panel that featured dude's partner called him by a different name - Wuzzy Wooks, Widdy Weeks, Wazoo Wakka, and on. The Mad parodies in the late fifties early sixties were bonkers and beautifully executed. Funny what you remember.

    Long before the world wide web and perhaps during the dawn of FTP's, If I had an insane question I wanted an answer to, I would call the main branch library help desk. I'd ask for help researching some 'thing' and within hours or sometimes days, I would get a call back with a well researched answer. It was a given that one must listen to the librarian share the method of finding the answer, but it was obviously a game to them. Sasha continues this proud tradition! She saw the meme and said, "I must know!" And the search was on! This vid is not only the result of her quest, the the path her quest took. I applauded this channel and its host.

  • @macsnafu
    @macsnafu 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

    I was completely unaware of this meme. Surely, the powder that makes you say "yes" is *sugar,* not salt?
    However, I've read this story, more than once, so I've also seen the original panel multiple times. I had a copy of The Greatest Golden Age Stories Ever Told. I've also had some of the Plastic Man Archives editions. And finally, I've read some of the original Police Comics and Plastic Man comics over at Comic Book Plus. I think the interface at Comic Book Plus is easier to navigate than what they have at the Digital Comic Museum. But that may just be me. 😕
    I hate to use the term "genius", it seems to get used too much. But Jack Cole was really a great writer and cartoonist, especially on Plastic Man, which allowed him to um, "stretch" his artistic and creative abilities.
    And I know I've harped on this before, but Plas was a serious crimefighter, regardless of his stretching abilities and some of his foes. It was his sidekick Woozy Winks who added a lot of the humor to the series.
    And considering DC's penchant for buying up other comic book companies and their characters, it's truly amazing that they let the old Quality and Fawcett comic books fall into the public domain. It's like a sacrifice to the public fomain gods! ;-)

    I was there when the show was just starting, and tried to leave during the 3rd season. But it seems the more I run from it, the more it follows me. First some fanfics, then a DC crossover comic, then a movie for that crossover, now forbidden knowledge that the Powder That Makes You Say “Yes” had its origins in the RWBY subreddit.

    I be like, just dip your head under the top of the ocean bro, you'll be filtering salt forever. I mean... you could literally maybe install him into a huge desalination plant and just have fresh water forever and ever for the entire country... maybe... if eh... well... if we don't mind that the byproduct of all that fresh water is being filtered through him... somehow. Going to go buy my 24 pack of amorpho... I mean aquafina now!

    Ok but now I am wondering would plastic man be for up for recycling? I can both see him having a plastic rights protest and seeing it as just plastic surgery. Both images are hilarious

    Hahhahaha!!! I am not a comic book aficionado by and means... and this is still so super entertaining! I may become one just to follow along to your videos. You're hilarious and creative, Sasha! Question: how do you find the origins of certain panels tracing back to a specific issue? Do you sift through all the issues by hand (or digitally)? Or, do you just Google it? Either way, super impressive and cool!
