Like two views of the same person, society seems him as just an old, weird letch, our narrator sees his humanity, contemplates his state of mind and the circumstances that brought him to his lonely, homeless state and actually interacts with him finding him to be quiet, gentle and sadly misunderstood

The three songs off this record, Aqualung, Crosseyed Mary and Locomotive Breath are a trilogy about homeless people known by the lead singer, Ian Anderson. The other 2 songs in the trilogy feature Ian on flute, which I think Dee would enjoy very much. You should also check out Hymn 43, my personal favorite off this album.

Apparently, Ian Anderson's first wife, Jenny, had been on a photography course at the time, and as part of her course assignments had been photographing homeless people around London. Ian Anderson had seen some of the photos and was then inspired to write the song - although he decided to give her the lyric writing credit. The excellent cover paintings were by US artist Burton Silverman - although Anderson always professed to dislike the cover depiction, as he felt too many people thought it was actually a portrait of him, and not the character of 'Aqualung.' Most remarkably, right on the cusp of the band's global success, Anderson decided to sack the band's superlative bass player, Glenn Cornick, before drafting in an old school friend, Jeffrey Hammond, on bass - even though Hammond (as stated on the band's debut 'This Was') couldn't actually play any musical instruments.

Dee once again surprised me I didn't think she was going to like this one but she was immediately was paying attention to it and the lyrics didn't really phase her enough to turn her off to it. But of course, it's Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull. Totally captivating musically and lyrically. If you watch it live, Anderson's eyes bring a whole other dimension to his storytelling, AND THEN there's the flute wielding and gasping for air and there is no better flute player on the planet the way he can stab a note at the right time or hold a note and do flips off of scaffolding and land like a cat still playing. He was something to behold in the 70s.

In another song on here, a Jack knife barber is mentioned. That's an abortionist. When I was young,😉 and in the army, every where we went in a car, this 8 track was getting worn out. In later year's I relate to it differently than then, ( then being kind of an " I don't accept religion the same as you" vibe) I had occasion once on a winter night, about 10 below outside and was at a local gas station, homeless guy looking for the nearest " Pads " location. The gas station attendant didn't know where it was but I did, I gave the guy a ride the 2 or 3 miles to the place. My family thought I was nuts, but it brought home the real meaning of the song.
Whew, sorry for the long story.🤠👍👍👍

You scared me there for a minute. I had never heard you say that you had heard a tune and were not too impressed, so far. At least that is what I thought I heard. But man, Chod, what a beautiful thing that the open mind is. So amazing to be able to watch as you stay present in the moment with the song, just give it a chance.... And you got it. As I knew you would. I love watching someone who trusts his own musical understanding...enough to be able to let go of any pre-judgments and then just settle in and listen: make sense of what he is hearing. Thanks for showing up, and stay cool, little brother...

Took my kids to see Jethro Tull back in 94, and even though they had no idea what to expect, they loved it. There was a Senior Citizen group sitting near us, who had gotten free tickets. The story behind the band name is that their manager kept changing their name because when they'd played a gig nobody wanted them back (they were bad) - so the name change was so they continued to get booked. Until they ended up with Jethro Tull and a venue wanted them back - so they were stuck with it. (Not that it's a bad name, Tull are incredible.)

The entire song is about how we judge by appearances.
He has no children. He is looking at the little kids and people assume because he is looking at them and his appearance that he is a pervert.
But the singer (also the narrator who has known the homeless guy) explains "Aqualung" past and how he has been scarred by the army etc. in order that we might also see how we judge others by appearance.
Remember the song starts off as painting an observation. What the others in the park see. How they see him looking at the children and assume his intent is bad and he is watching the "pretty panties run". They see his snotty nose and look upn that as gross. Which adds to their judgement. But the underneath person has regrets and is living vicariously through the families and their children.
Things and people are not always how they appear. Sometimes there is much pain and sorrow that is misinterpreted as perversion.

I don’t think the song specifically says Aqualung has been scarred by the army. The only reference to the army in the song is “The army’s up the road, salvation a la mode” which is a reference to the Salvation Army who have been well known for charity work amongst the poor and homeless, operating soup kitchens, shelters, dishing out hot drinks etc. That’s not to say he couldn’t have been scarred by the army, but that’s not implicit in the lyrics.

Unlike today's music that's usually just in your face,
Sixties and seventies music, rock especially were far more subtle in subject matter. They used allegories, euphemisms, almost like a secret code on anti establishment and anti war subjects. The use of 2 voices to reflect the 2 different concepts of reality was brilliant. This song made us 13 years old (at that time think) . Lol.

Not as purely prog as a band like Yes or King Crimson, but certainly very close to it. This is a great song, and also an indictment on society: we see a tramp and assume the worst, but inside he's a gentle character that society doesn't want to know. This is a song about a homeless old man and first told through someone else's eyes and then his own.

This was written by Anderson and his wife. It has two movements and of course the bridge. In the first movement we hear the description of a perverted old homeless man with breathing problems. The description is cold and we get a sense of heartless disgust at the sight of the man. Then in the 2nd movement we hear a compassionate narrative! The song is a parallel to how most people feel about homelessness. At first we are disgusted, then we feel compassion! Thx! Great reaction!

Interestingly, whilst the song is always co-credited to Jennie Anderson, Ian has explained, in later years, that the lyrics were his. She was a photographer who took some photos of homeless people. He put lyrics to the photos as an exercise to try and demonstrate to her how he writes lyrics. Since they were inspired by her photos he felt it only fair to give her the co-credit.
He tells the take of how she became a photographer. It was important to him that she have her own identity and not just be a Rick-stars wife, especially as he would be away on tour a lot. He was encouraging in her desire to take up a creative profession, but went out of his way to dissuade her from being a musician. He had a fear that he’d become a bit like Paul McCartney and John Lennon and turn up to gigs and having the audience saying “oh s**t, he’s brought his wife again” which always made me laugh.

The whole album is a classic gem! I've seen the Aqualung tour 3 times back in the early 70's. Its like the Sgt Pepper album by the Beatles on a different level. You need to listen to the whole album, but be sure to check out Jethro Tull's album "Benefit" and "Thick as a Brick" as well.

From this same album the song "My God" would be a good one to react too. Also from their debut album Benefit "Nothing to Say" and "To Cry You a Song" are excellent songs. Remember Jethro Tull is the name of the band not anyone in particular.

Two views of a destitute homeless old man. Fear and projections of disrepute from passers by; the reality of loneliness, trying to sleep outside in winter - and finally dying of TB (the rattling breath, the blooming spots of blood). Lonely he lives, lonely he dies.

Two different sets of eyes see the same person but, see him differently. One, sees this homeless person and just thinks the absolute worst of him, the second sees the hurt and pain he is suffering through. “ leg hurting bad as he bends to pick a dog end” dog end is slang for a cigarette butt.

Having now established for yourselves some antecedent familiarity with Tull by way of their Aqualung, it may interest you to explore what I and many others do consider to be an equally brilliant companionpiece, Locomotive Breath, within which, for instance, there exist such parallels as lyrical expressions of despair, lamentations of the poor and disadvantaged, those who have, perhaps, long been stricken with various illnesses or dibilitating maladies, critically serious conditions such as respiratory and circulatory system diseases, foot fungi, swamp ass and bunyans, cavities, carbunkles and toe jams, ingrown, infected or just plain wild, unsightly, irregularly shaped and thick patches of bodyhairs, deadly, deadly halitosis, an almost visible shroud of b.o., and ugh, perhaps worst of all is having been made to suffer such terribly, terribly, bad fashion. The horror... The horror... JK
