Your friend Bob, like many people when first hearing the lyrics..don't understand the overall meaning of the song. It is about the way average people react when seeing a homeless guy sitting alone on a park bench. They immediately think he must be a pervert and a bad person....when in truth "it's only me" (if circumstances forced you to that situation). It is a very deep song.

    • @Rickhorse1
      @Rickhorse1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The lyrics, for anyone interested.
      Sitting on a park bench
Eying little girls with bad intent
      Snots running down his nose
Greasy fingers smearing shabby clothes, hey, Aqualung
      Drying in the cold sun
Watching as the frilly panties run, hey, Aqualung
      Feeling like a dead duck
Spitting out pieces of his broken luck, oh, Aqualung
Sun streaking cold, an old man wandering lonely
Taking time, the only way he knows
Leg hurting bad as he bends to pick a dog end
He goes down to a bog and warms his feet
Feeling alone, the army's up the road
Salvation a la mode and a cup of tea
Aqualung, my friend, don't you start away uneasy
You poor old sod, you see it's only me
      Do you still remember
      December's foggy freeze
When the ice that clings on to your beard
      It was screaming agony
Hey and you snatch your rattling last breaths
      With deep-sea diver sounds
      And the flowers bloom like
      Madness in the spring
Sun streaking cold, an old man wandering lonely
Taking time, the only way he knows
Leg hurting bad as he bends to pick a dog end
He goes down to a bog and warms his feet
Feeling alone, the army's up the road
Salvation a la mode and a cup of tea
Aqualung my friend don't you start away uneasy
You poor old sod, you see it's only me
Aqualung my friend don't you start away uneasy
You poor old sod, you see it's only me

Nick, I think your bandmate might have misunderstood the lyrics to Aqualung. The harsh lyrics are meant to represent society's views on the homeless, not Ian Anderson's. They're contrasted with the more compassionate lyrics, which do reflect Anderson's views. Although his then-wife actually wrote the words to the song.

    • @corawheeler9355
      @corawheeler9355 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

Yes .... They should look at the lyrics and see how the harsh "Sitting on a park bench" goes to the empathetic "You poor old sod, you see it's only me".

Pffffft, compared to "Cross-eyed Mary", Aqualung is incredibly tame. Society assuming an old, grimy, homeless man is a pervert versus an entire song telling us the misadventures of a literal child prostitute? No contest.

    • @tonypotts1644
      @tonypotts1644 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yes indeed. A point that's seems necessary to impress more and more these days when people can't seem to differentiate between an artists 'commentary' on a subject, and the condoning of the subject.

I read an article some years ago that included an interview with Martin Barre about the recording of the song Aqualung. Tull had recorded the song except for the guitar solo which Martin Barre had come in to do the following morning. He had the engineer play the song back so he could run through it to "warm up". Unbeknownst to him Jimmy Page had come into the control room from an adjoining studio. Martin Barre said "ok, I'm ready to go." Jimmy Page said "no, that was great, leave it." So what we have been listening to for the last 50+ years is Martin Barre "warming up."

When you're ready for a deep dive, there's Thick as a Brick. Ian Anderson was miffed that they referred to Aqualung as a prog or concept album. Thick as a Brick was intended to satirize prog and ended up being one of the era's best prog albums.

@@davdaninja The whole album is one song as I'm sure you know! which wasn't compatible with radio play at the time... and still it reached number one on the album charts. But it goes through so many beautifully composed musical changes that it doesn't sound like one song of course, but it acts as one coherent whole connected together so nicely

I don't know why people don't get that the change in vocal tone is a change in prospective with the harsher voice being society and the other being a friend.

You look like a couple of stoned teen-aged kids hearing this stuff back in the early '70's. Which makes me very happy. You are reacting just the same as we actually did discovering this music in the first place.
I see this with so many first react accounts. The prog-rock of the '70's was, still to my mind, the best era of music since the '50's and '60's broke ground. I respect what those decades gave to us, but cherish what came of it in the '70's.

I saw them back in 1976 at Madison Square Garden. I have been to hundreds of concerts and Tull was one of the absolute best concerts. The musicianship was amazing and I was glad they didn't just copy what was on the studio album, but instead had a different arrangement which I liked. A lot of people are disappointed if the concert doesn't sound like the album.

    • @benoitdesmarais2948
      @benoitdesmarais2948 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree, saw them three times in the 70's, BUT i have never listened to Bursting Out more than once. Comparing the versions of Songs From The Wood or Thick as a Brick with the studio versions makes no sense. What they brought in energy live on stage compensated for the simplification of the songs - Anderson can't sing, play the flute and the guitar all at once, Barre can't be adding guitar lines and duel with himself the way he does on TAAB, and so forth. What i really regret is there was no high quality video or film made of their 70's shows that would offer top notch quality image AND sound.

A bit of Trivia. When Jethro Tull was recording this Led Zeppelin was recording in the same building. While the guitar solo on Aqualung was being recorded, Jimmy Page happened to stop by and was standing there listening to Martin Barre play. Ian Anderson has said that having Jimmy Page there was both intimidating and inspiring.

I don't think yoga Bob ever listened to the lyrics to Aqualung because they are quite thoughtful and empathetic. It is really two different voices commenting on a homeless man. The first only sees him with disgust and suspicion. The second sees his pain and feels his hardship, recognizing he could easily be in the same situation ("you poor old sod, you see its only me...")

Tull was absolutely one of the biggest bands in the world when the Aqualung tour rolled out! You guys are in for a real treat with this wonderful album, and I imagine you will carry it with you the rest of your days, as so many of us have! This is definitely a concept album, in my opinion, and Aqualung/Cross Eyed Mary are Central figures. I encourage you to dissect the lyrics as they are deep indeed! A little Brit slang is helpful....Dog Ends are discarded cigarette butts, “The Bog” refers to a public restroom in the park. You will pick out “Salvation” and “Army” and a cup of tea, which the Salvation Army offered to those in need. It’s a pretty heavy album! While I love pretty much all Tull, the Stand Up, Benefit, Aqualung, Thick As A Brick was my favorite period for sure! Have fun with this outstanding music, I know I have!

Jethro Tull, give creds to all, Bare & Anderson rocked then and rocked for almost 5 decades. Somewhere down the line, maybe 100 years from now JT will be rediscovered and be remembered forever as they deserved. Go back and listen to that g solo of Bare in Aqualung. All analog amps, all analog mixing tables .....just pure Rock & Roll oldschool.

It is actually a very compassionate song. How society sees Agualung but how he really is and how he is struggling. I grew up with Tull. My best friend, Tull was all he played in his car, everything on 8 track. Every tour he has gone to and is going still in a few weeks with his 27 yr old daughter, who is also a huge fan. Back in those days I don't remember having the lyrics, so I didn't realize the real message of the song. A real masterpiece, just like My God and so many others.

Their first few albums are incredible and a change of direction for rock music. They are indeed one of the best bands of that amazing era and are so underrated. Try Thick as a Brick for a prog rock classic but for some more of their best rock songs try A New Day Yesterday, Nothing is Easy, Back to the Family, With You There to Help Me and To Cry You a Song, you will love these for sure! Anymore, not being in the RRHOF is a badge of honor. So many great bands of the 70’s and 80’s have been exiled from that elitist place. Supertramp , Kansas, Jethro Tull are the top three which come to mind. Hell, it even took The Moody Blues and Rush over 40 years to be inducted!!

Aqualung and Led Zepplin IV were the two albums which were the first to be recorded in the Basing Street Studios. LZ had the small downstair studio, while JT was recording upstair in the part of the studio which was the deconsecrated nave of a church. Martin Barre (Tull's guitarist) tells the story of them recording the Aqualung solo. Anderson would sometime steal a solo for his flute if the player didn't hit the solo right on an early take, so Barre really wanted to nail it. While he was recording, Jimmy Page came into the booth and was waving at Martin to get his attention, and Martin did NOT want to stop lest he lose the solo. The result was one of the great electric guitar solos of all time.

Hi again - Great reaction. Hope you get around to listening to the live album called - "Bursting out" which has both these songs. Track 7 is the flute solo which will blow your minds [ Pun intended ] - There is a wonderful track called "Skating Away On The Thin Ice Of The New Day" & there is some great humour between songs from Ian speaking to the audience. Live they are much heavier versions than the studio & this album is such a brilliant rock concert you should just sit back & enjoy in it's entirety. Byeee !

A timely pick for me by you guys and Michelle - it was 50 years ago this week that I went to my first big concert: Tull and Aqualung! Hope to see you getting much deeper in their catalog. Particularly with Thick As A Brick, A Passion Play and Songs From The Wood (and there's so much more). I also love Jim's channel, so really hope you get a collaboration going with him. Nice job, as always!

Wow, just watched your reaction to “In the Court of the Crimson King” and as soon as I finished you post this! You’re hitting 2 of my favourite bands in a row Michele is a true legend here on the channel, her picks are always fantastic!
I can kind of understand how someone would be turned off by hearing particular lines in the lyrics but my overall interpretation of the message is a positive one. To me it’s a juxtaposition of society’s perception/stigma of homeless people versus what their actual story and situation is. You can hear the switch in perspective near the beginning of “Aqualung” where the acoustic guitar comes in with the effect on the vocals, then it switches back and forth with the musically heavy and lighter parts.
“Thick as a Brick” (the full version) is ESSENTIAL listening, hopefully you can do that on Patreon one day.
Thanks for the great video as always!

You'll be surprised how proggy (in their very unique way) and at times complex Tull became after this (hit) album until the early 80s. No album sounds like the other, but is always clearly Jethro Tull. It's great you seem to enjoy them as much as I do since my early youth 😄🎵
Nick got it right - Tull are also very much about the drumming! Then again, they have some wonderful acoustic and folky tracks.
BTW Jim is great (and he listened to some Motorpsycho, who are one of my current favourite bands 😉😎), and plays some extrordinary music on his channel.

When Led Zeppelin did their first North American tour, iirc, in 1970, Jethro Tull was the opening band. That’s when I first discovered them at the Earl Warren Fairgrounds in Santa Barbara. We had never heard of JT, but I’ve been a fan ever since. In fact they’re my favorite band from that period. They were a constantly evolving band, and recorded some of my favorite albums, that I still play to this day. “Songs From the Wood”, “Minstrel in the Gallery”, “Heavy Horses”, “Crest of the Knave”, “Broadsword and the Beast”. When the Thick as a Brick album came out I wore it out from playing it so much. Aqualung also got worn out.🤣
Ian Anderson is one of the greatest front men from that period. You really need to watch some of the live performances. I saw them live 7 or 8 times and they were some of the best concerts I went to.
If you can find Thick as a Brick live at Madison Square Garden in 1978, I think it’s the best live performance of that song. It’s about fourteen minutes, a condensed version of the original which was about forty minutes.

Great that you're exploring more from this album. Please don't ignore the shorter songs between the longer tracks. Even though they are short, they are well thought-out and not just "filler". They are mostly acoustic but Ian is so great on acoustic guitar that you don't want to miss them.
They have so many great albums but I would say go to 'Minstrel in the Gallery' next esp. The title track.

Congratulations on your video channel. I have been an unconditional fan of Jethro Tull since 1972/73. Jethro Tull is the soundtrack of my life and of course of other fans. I really appreciate your auditions and reactions from this mythical British band. I have verified that you listen to music of different styles, which is phenomenal. One suggestion: if you ever put on another Jethro Tull album, I recommend Thick as a Brick. As it lasts 40 minutes, you can do two parts. It is for me a masterpiece where the talent of Ian Anderson is found in a sublime moment. Thanks and greetings from Madrid, Spain.

Darkness&Light, IMO, and that means Yin&Yang. Hard to imagine an aspiring Yoga Master would look down his nose at these lyrics! This is an incredibly empathetic depiction of a "despicable homeless bum" who, yes, leers at little girls...
Tull (mainly Ian of course) provided diverse characters from throughout Western societies like the UK&USA in their lps/tours.
And, IMO, we never needed that more than these past 60+ yrs of societal extremes (and likely decline).

Jethro Tull (named after the inventor of the seed drill) was a very unique band during that era. Instead of sex and drugs and rock&roll, Ian Anderson ran the band like a business. They practiced 5 days a week from 9-5 and no drugs or alcohol was allowed when they were working or touring. Much of the music was based on classic music. A good example is Bouree from the great album, Stand Up. It is a song composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. I saw them live in NYC in 1976 and during one song the band would switch instruments at the natural break of the song until every member played every instrument. The most amazing thing I've ever seen at a concert...no other band could top that!

Aqualung and Cross-eyed Mary are both homeless persons. The songs reflect how they are seen by others as well as how they see and experience their own lives. These may be the first rock songs that treat homeless and associated mental illness. How homeless men are treated so differently than homeless women. Remarkable. Bravo Ian Anderson, Martin Barre and all Jethro Tull. I saw them five times in concert in the early 70s. Great shows.

Tull started as a blues band as exemplified on their first two albums, This Was and Stand Up. Benefit, one of my favorites was a transition into Aqualung. And then the true conceptual mind blowing progressive albums came next, Thick As A Brick and Passion Play. The style of every album changed / progressed. They were by far the most entertaining band I saw in the 70's. My date to see Passion Play said, omg, this is so much better than Zepplin's show she had just seen. Agree with her or not, they were definately amazing. Enjoy your musical journey and thanks for sharing your reactions with us.
