My dad decided to randomly listen to my music. He asked my what the new album I bought was. Cultosaurus Erectus.
We both listened to it for the first time. He was surprised. Said it had an amazing amount of musicality to it and gave me a thumbs up.
    Heck ya.

the most incredible one two punch on this album. Black Blade followed by Monsters! blew me away when this came out. BOC is such an odd band. some very pop songs and some almost prog songs. i think they have such a wide range its mostly musicians who end up appreciating their greatness.

Elric of Melniboné, the wielder of the gigantic black
runesword Stormbringer (a demon in sword form).
Elric was a tall, sickly, thin albino sorcerer prince who
acquired the sword & discovered it had a mind of
its own, devouring souls just by slicing his enemies
& it would feed Elric some of the strength it gained.
Elric was also one of the many Moorcockian 'eternal
    champions.
Check out 'Veterans of the Psychic Wars' for more about
    Moorcock's Eternal Champion concept.

If they could capture the same atmosphere as the stories by Michael Moorcock. It would make an excellent series on HBO or whatever. Elric of Melbourne is one super cool super scary albino. You would have to find an actual, tall, slim albino to play him, or there be trouble.

Being an older Cult fan, I never "got" this cut. I remember buying this album back when it came out, and feeling a little disappointed when hearing this piece I guess if one is up on the background story/character/etc it can be more appreciated. As someone here as already said, "I Love The Night" from Spectres is unforgettable, and "Cities On Flame..." from their 1972 debut will keep your feet stompin' and head bobbin'.

  • @Ozarkprepper643

Thank you for listening to request and reacting to Black Blade.
It's one of the best of the obscure songs.
John Trivers and author Michael Morecock wrote the lyrics. The song is based on the science fiction writing, "The bane of the black sword."
    Written by Michael Moorcock.
Most many bands used Moog synthesizer. And of course we had Reverb which was in the old days vibrating the sound using a spring.
We also had the Echoplex in the '70s.
You need to check out the 1944 music video of "Stringy the guitar" Alvino Ray band playing St Louis Blues.
Stringy is a string puppet and is given a voice using the first voice box.

BOC is just one example of the many bands out there that do not get enough attention because average listener only knows the songs that were popular on the radio. I am a firm believer that more often than not, the BEST songs are the album cuts. I wish more reactors would listen to their viewers who love the albums and know which are the awesome cuts. I also wish reactors would occasionally listen to all or at least more than one or two cuts from an album. I think the songwriters and performers have intentions when they are putting an album together, maybe a theme or an idea. It is nice and informative to get the full picture. I am not an expert on BOC, but I really appreciate the opportunity to dive into the diversity of their music. Thank you to your special friend for his good taste and thank you for your very intelligent and thoughtful analysis. It would be really cool if you could occasionally take a band like this and dive deep into their work. Not some one like Led Zeppelin (no disrespect - they are great), as they have been analyzed to death, but some other talent that isn't as well known to the masses or young people. You reach so many people, you hold the power to reignite interest in a long lost band....

Chod, many bands of this era had so many great songs that they got buried in the vastness of it all. Back then, we had so many great songs arriving weekly we simply brushed them aside, compared to what's being produced today, where we rarely see a good song in several months, if not longer. Deep cuts..... it's all about deep cuts!

(Don't Fear) The Reaper, Burnin' For You are 'gateway' songs for BÖC. I got 'Fire of Unknown Origin' in high school. Loved it. Went back and 'discovered' that the SAME band did (Don't Fear) The Reaper AND Godzilla. So, I had a favorite band before I 'knew' what 'bands' really were.

Great analysis! To your point about the relative popularity of Don't Fear the Reaper, my impression is that it can be appreciated without a great deal of effort on the part of the listener. Blade, however, requires more interactive listening, requiring you to "unpack" the elements carefully, and admire them in turn, to derive full enjoyment. The sequencing of the songs on the albums is also artful; take for example the way that Blade trails off into the distance, with full chaos still going on - and then you get slugged in the face with the opening attack of Monsters. The albums themselves are thoughtful and artistic.
Please consider listening to Eye of the Hurricane, as well as It's Good to Feel Hungry, from Curse of the Hidden Mirror. For some reason this malaise era albums never got much love, just like Club Ninja and Revolution by Night. Yet every one of these contain real gems! I appreciate the effort you're putting forth in embracing this genre of artistry! Wednesday after next, I'll be front-row at an old Virginia tobacco barn, called Dosey Doe, eating steak and digging on this 50 year old band.

This is the first of 3 songs which B.Ö.C. co-wrote w/author Michael Moorcock.
-and is, directly, about his famed/infamous (in some circles), most popular character/creation:
    Elric of Melniboné
& said character's (sentient, mystic) sword: Stormbringer
[which appears to be made from a "black crystal"line substance].
[The other 2 "Moorcock songs" would be: "The Great Sun Jester"
and "Veteran Of The Psychic Wars" (which I believe you've heard, already.).]
    🤘🤘

This is a tribute to Michael Moorcock character Elric of Melbourne. Elric was a tall, thin albino from a race of sorcerer, who carried a black blade that craved blood and souls. The souls went straight to hell it would cause Eric to plunge the sword after a time into anyone who got close to him who he cared about, and it would also kill his enemies. The band love Michael Moorcock’s Books and stories, and developed a friendship with the writer. He is a very good and unique author I guess, lord of the rings, but much much darker.

Hint: you will need a copy of the LP cover in front of you to have even a ghost of a chance to locate it.
