In my opinion, yamaha sound is more better. The clarity, perfection, tone richness and brightness is really good.

Nice playing, and both sound great. The price difference is over $3K. I've heard both and my son plays an 82Zii, so I guess I have a built in bias, but in my experience, the player is far more important than the instrument once you get into professional quality horns (or anything else.) The Yamaha is definitely the better value, but it really comes down to which one you bond with, because otherwise, they are pretty comparable.

the recording has too much effects to really analyze the true sound of the sax. But very similar sound. The Yamaha has a nice finish in my opinion. I like the darker Gold color.

    Don't forget the price difference . I paid € 3,400 for my 82Z and the Selmer was € 1,600 more expensive. (2016) :-)

I have both and they sit in my closet becuase of my Yamaha 62 purple label. But in this video I like the sound of the 82Z. For the type of music played the 82Z sounds mellower, a lot like Dave Koz.

I'm partial to the Series iii, but the Custom EX is a great horn. I had the benefit of playing these two side by side for weeks while I was in school. Yamaha did an excellent job with their horn's intonation and response, but I felt I had no flexibility with the pitch and there was something about the core tone I didn't like in the high register. I bought a Series iii and swapped the neck which improved the low end response, which was my only complaint.
I don't like Yamaha's gold lacquer either. My Selmer has a brushed finish with a clear lacquer on it.

Yes they sound similar. I have both but havent been overly impressed by either. But if I wanted the sound/style of Dave Koz, which who you seem to be influenced, I would choose the Yamaha. Nice playing by the way!

I hear you .You will sound like Koz. Excellent sound. But for myself I love the S3. Warmer and darker. More of a Grover Washington Jr sound. But you better believe that I love Koz too. Boney, Najee, a "very old timer" John Klemmer. Grover played with Keilwerth from parent company Couf.

Very good comparison there are some differences between the two horns Yamaha is brighter and selmer is gloomy Now I am playing 280. Selmer is expensive than 82z. 62 is lower price I'll change it step by step thanks

I prefer the sound of the Selmer - more core, more depth. However, both horns have unequal and
out of tune scales. They need to be set up properly by someone who knows and takes the time.
In my experience, neither company use enough time to properly fine tune the instruments. The
build quality is great, but for the price the horn should be at it´s optimal level out of the box.

82-Z . Имеет более открытый звук с оттенками -все как положено )
S.3 , имеет как всегда плотный больше контролируемый звук , но досмотрев видео до конца , думаю , что мундштук не подходит к данному инструменту )

  • @rhrh2025
    @rhrh2025 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Having heard several players on Yamahas and Selmers, I can almost tell the difference because of the pitch flaws on a Selmer. I prefer the Yamaha scale to the Selmer. Selmers play somewhat flat in the upper register, causing the player to bite down slightly to raise the pitch. This chokes the sound somewhat! I've played both Selmers and Yamahas, and for me, the Yamaha is preferred! Selmers are still great instruments, but not worth the extra money, in my opinion!

Thank you for the reply, both horns are so close to the same sound its hard to differentiate between the two. A lot of the sound is from the player too. I have a MK VI circa.1962 and a Ref 54 circa 2000 and also a Yani 880. The VI has a slight edge in sound over the Ref 54 but the Ref 54 is easier to play. The Yani has a more classical sound to my ears. The Ref 54 is my go to horn when I have a gig. You play very well! @@vladimirkushnarev4957

Hey bro - aren't we lucky to have such First World problems as to be deciding which of these magnificent horns to play? To my ear, I hear you having to push the sound more to achieve sustain on the Selmer (resistance difference between the two?). I thought your first verse legato playing on the Yamaha sounded much more even and effortless - really nice playing btw. Not my style of music, but your gentle almost non existent attack on that first verse was beautiful. Both play a little sharp around the middle D. I thought the sound was more even on the Yamaha, but I liked the palm key sound of the Selmer. While the S3 is a miles nicer horn than the S2, I actually prefer the SA80 Mk I.

Selmers Seriee III produces typically constipated, flat Selmer's sound, which the company pursues since Selmer VI. Why some folks are obsessed about such a flat and overdone sound, is beyond me. Although the instrument's mechanics and materials are exemplary, your typical Selmer saxophone benefits if the mouthpiece and the neck are changed, and paired to open up the horn, and the new possibilities with the instrument that co$t$ a lot.
