  • DIY Welding Project How To Make Welding Fixture Clamps. If you have a welding fixture table or you decided to follow my video and build your own welding fixture table than you know you need a good set of clamps. Previously I showed you how to make a set of F-clamps and in this episode I am going to show you how to modify a set of budget C-clamp locking pliers at a fraction of what it would cost to buy. These are great beginner welding projects.

    I'm curious who calls a 3x3 ft piece of half inch plate scrap? Around here metal suppliers are currently calling it 300 bucks!! Lol Great idea with the clamps though!

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Thanks man! Yah my local shop has piles of scrap that they were selling for 25 cents a pound. I'm not sure how they determine what gets sold by the pound vs by the foot but I think I paid somewhete around 30 bucks for it 😎

    Nice, Brandon.
    Quick tip, McMaster-Carr part number 6628K324 is an undersized 1144 steel 5/8" rod. A foot of it is just under $7. That and a pack of 5/8 ID washers welded on top of the cut pieces and you have your mounting stubs for about $0.75 each.

      It doesn't cost anything to set up an account with McMaster-Carr or MSC industrial supply, so those are the first two places I set up my accounts with.

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I had an account there about 15 years ago. I never thought about re opening it until you mentioned it. We have a distributor about an hour away. That place is dangerous to my wallet. I walked in one day looking for a 5 dollar item and ended up seeing an industrial truck box with a discounted tag because it had a couple scratches and 500 dollars later it was mine...my wife wasn't impressed as much as I was lol.

When you mentioned renting the drill, it gave me hope! I don't even know if they rent them in Boise but I bet they do. I can afford at least one 5/8 cutter so if I can find a 3/8 plate, I'm in business. Thanks for another great video.

    Brandon, these clamps are awesome. I knew I saw this video last year, but a refresher is always good! I tried to source those shoulder bolts locally back then without much success on Amazon. I went looking again today. Best price I could find was $5.84 each! Worst price was $19.13 each!!!!! Our Princess Auto (very similar to Harbor Freight) Has a 24' x 36" fab table with the holes already drilled. It is only about 1/4" thick for $319.00. I think it will work for light fabrication stuff.

    To keep the slope and finger gap, offsetting the cut using a straight edge (or the speed square) pivoted around the fixed jaw's point of contact might have allowed you to maintain more of the adjustability range and bottom out at when the clamp is set at it's tightest rather than before. At 9:35, it kinda looks like the slope that was cut resulted in the jaw bottoming out prematurely and thus reducing maximum opening.

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I fiddled with it and ground a little off the end where it pivots. They probably should have done that from the factory.

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Non flammable gas bottles have back sealing valves. For the valve to be seated it has to be opened fully Flammable gasses are the opposite. You open them a minimal amount so in the event there is a problem, the valve can be closed quickly.

    • @BUZDRIFT
      @BUZDRIFT 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrandonLund I know, but I still do this with argon o2 mix anyway, there's 2000 plus psi in the bottle, you really don't need to open it all the way, ever, not for mig or tig! I've never run into gas starvation on non-flammable mixes! In a possible emergency, you're left closing the bottle for 10 plus seconds...

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it's a matter of gas starvation, I think has to do with sealing the stem of the valve from gas leaking by. It's how I was taught so thats how I do it.

    • @BUZDRIFT
      @BUZDRIFT 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrandonLund That's the thing isn't it, you're not doing the wrong thing as that's what you were taught, same goes here with me, was taught that it's not necessary to open the valve all the way. I think this is a case of different strokes for different folks!

    Good video Brandon. You can keep the threads on some of those shoulder bolts for other fixtures that you want to tighten down to your workbench. You could also have stated the approximate cost for the name brand welding table clamps to give your viewers some idea of the $$ savings.
    You mentioned in a response to another poster that you are looking for an Anvil but can’t find an affordable one, so how about you make one as a video project? Maybe make a small bench anvil of 25 kilos and a 50 or 100 kilogram bruiser?
