The most difficult thing Al does is NOT the extreme speed and accuracy. It's actually the way he can play against the time so damned well. I've heard him speak on this on many occasions, about how a guitarist must be able to tap their foot and keep the beat, be in tune to the rhythm, to play within the spaces. Just an amazing talent all around. A true musician.

I've read that he started on drums/that's where he got his rhythmic awareness !!!###

I got the chance to see Al in 2006 in a very small venue , the band was brand new , so they played newer songs. It still was an all around incredible show , one of many bucket list musicians i always wanted to see perform live !

Met Al in Dayton Ohio at Gilly's Jazz Club. I waited in lobby of hotel a while before his sound check. I figured I'd recognize him. A guy stepped off the elevator wearing all black - jacket, jeans, and boots. Also had on black sunglasses, but no beard. I looked and said there's Al. I approached him and introduced myself. He said thanks for coming to the show do you know where the club is located. I said yes follow me and we walked right across the street. Al said stick with me. We walked in everybody was shaking hands he starts signing autographs. I'm standing right there like I was his bodyguard. We talked a while. I asked him about Stanley Clark, Arito the percussionist, Chick. He did a sound check, standing in the middle of the stage just whaling! I asked him to play, "Land of the midnight Sun" real quick for me. He ripped off the first couple of bars, I was blowed away and satisfied. The show was excellent 👌

His black Les Paul guitar is said to be a repaint of an old Les Paul guitar (1958). Unbelievable!

I think it's got a DiMarzio Norton/Air Norton set. I use this set and the tone sounds similar.

I have one of his PRS's, and unless you have an actual '58, it sounds better than any LP I ever played, but it isn't a competition, they sound brilliant in the hands of brilliance.

The clip starts with “Race with Devil on a Spanish Highway”. So the title is misleading because there’s also an “Elegant Gypsy Suite” on the same album.

I love Al and I know he is BIG, great artist. But I don’t believe how he didn’t realized about his string out of tune. :(

On the stage with loud music musician hardly hears precisely what he plays sometimes (it depends on some technical stuff). Morover he has tinnitus and special stoppers in the ears not to hear loud music (kind of small headphones in ears). But to be truethful I didn't hear false tuning of his string. Which moment, which string? PS sorry for my poor English

@@wanttosayadrem2551 Hi, no problem for the language. I understand you perfectly. :)
Take a look at minute 6:36 right after the bends, or at minute 9:45, I think G string is the one slightly out of tune.

@@mhdz10 Hi! Thank you. I will hear that part of the song again. Generally it's often the case in Gibson-like and ofc original Gibsons LP that probably the string G is the easiest to get out of tune, especially while such intensive and long playing. May be it's not only issue of Gibsons, I've noticed that some guitarists with big technical stuff, during concert after each several songs change thei guitar on new (tuned correctly by the supporting ppl), eg. Steve Vai. Al Di Meola here didn't change his guitar and probably didn't want to break playing to tune his guitar. Regards! :)

@@mhdz10 I'ver just heard the moments - you are right, (6:36) the G string is out of tune shortly before the end of this song. May be then he tuned that string and again after long time of playing (9:45) it's out of tune. You were right!

@@wanttosayadrem2551 hi, yes absolutely. That is correct. They are not like those rock stars that carry over with them with an arsenal of several guitars. =)
