Good idea here David,. we did this at my shop where we have had many (expensive 12 AWG ) extension cords, but we used to coil the cords in a larger loop fashion. Then take two vastly different colour spray cans of paint and spray paint small 'bands of colour' at different points in the loops thereby doing pretty well as you've described, but just a bit faster to do.

Hello Super Dave. I know how to make the cord less attractive, first feed it lots of garlic, and then don't brush its teeth. After that make sure it doesn't comb its hair. Have lots of nose hair sticking out too! Plus dress it up and some really dirty smelly clothes. Last but not least feed it lots of my famous Big J's beans so it farts a lot. This should keep everyone away.
