  • Amanda decides to make wreaths for the chateau, Lincoln explains how we stay warm and we visit the hilltop town of Rochefort-en-Terre in Brittany.

    Welcome to Our French Chateau!
We are Amanda and Lincoln. With our two daughters and pets in tow, we moved across the world from our home in San Francisco California to buy and restore a petite chateau on 40 acres in the beautiful French countryside of Brittany.
Our channel will document our triumphs and failures in restoring the 19th-century Chateau de Lingourdy. We plan on returning the gardens, cottages and barns back to their former glory (on a tight budget) and opening it up to the public for events and luxurious stays. So if you're interested in observing daily life through the eyes of an American family whose French language skills are quite lacking and who have amassed a menagerie that includes cats, dogs, and donkeys, please join us...

Don't sell yourself short, your wreaths are lovely! And they have more meaning than store bought because not only did you make them with your own hands, most everything came from your land. I like that you gave props to artsy people because a lot of people who aren't makers have no idea all that goes into creating things like this. The lights of the town are beautiful, thank you for sharing that with us!

      Yes, i agree!
      They seem very likeable!
I've gotten a bit sick of the average English commoner going over and buying an ugly chateau and then acting like royalty in it and begging their viewers for money to fund their lifestyle!
it's all gotten a bit tiresome, but this couple seem really nice, their building is lovely, and they don't seem like grifters at all!

Living in Northern Australia I have no experience in heating so a fire and a tank full of fuel really makes me very nervous, however I am sure you are very experienced in these matters. We know all about keeping cool and not using too much electricity to do so. You did a lovely job on the wreaths...well done. The village and the decorations are just lovely, what we Australians dream Christmas to be in Europe.

So you can make your own wreath base by foraging for long vines - like ivy or grapevines. Just keep wrapping them round and secure with thin wire. Then you can poke pine branches into it and even reuse them every year!

Your wreaths are lovely, Amanda! Thank you for the beautiful, lighted town tour✨. Can see Mimi is hunkered down in healing mode🐾🐾.
A chateau wood boiler is probably a very different animal than house sized wood stove. We heated solely with a wood stove for many years. A large log added before bed each night and the damper turned down left a bed of coals for morning kindling. How I miss wood heat and the beauty of the flames. Not the mess though! The only time we had fussy fire building, maintaining was when the wood wasn’t dry enough. We mostly bought our wood because we went through so much each year. Where we were, oak was our choice, seasoned two years before burning and cedar for kindling. Unless there is issue with the venting on the stove itself, I’m wondering if Lincoln’s wood may just not be totally dried out.

I think your wreaths look wonderful on the doors! If you would like to watch a video on wreath making, Laura, from Garden Answer, has a helpful TH-cam. If you put together small bunches first then attach them with 22 gauge paddle wire it makes it so much easier. There is also a spray, Wilt Stop, that helps the greenery stay fresh. Good Luck, your father would be proud!

Hello from cold, snowy Canada, where wood stoves are a way of life. Splitting your wood that small means you will burn more wood and effort because your filling the stove more often. Large pieces not only burn longer they create a nessasairy bed of coals. Start with small wood to get it going followed by medium sizes to create a base fire, you once thats burning red add 1 or 2 large pieces. Watch your drafts, too little air flow will put your fire out, too much and it will burn hot and fast. From this point the coals will form the base and it only needs to be fed large pieces if you have the timing right. If its burning too low, throw in smaller spilt pieces and a larger piece on top to build it back up. Split wood will catch quicker but a full round piece of hardwood on a solid base of burning coals will burn all night , leaving you a base of hot coals to restart the fire the next morning. It is a skill that requires trial and error but once you get it you will be the fire master ;) Love the wreath!

I'm dreaming of a White Christmas.....
One of the most original outdoor decorations I have seen in France was while taking the RER commuter train north of Paris to IKEA near CDG Roissy airport...they'd wrapped different sized boxes in reds, greens and gold stripes with big bows, the boxes were 15 square or 45cm...the paper and ribbon was metallic and the home close enough to the train that the lights in the cabins lit up the decor beautifully, those were just leafless trees, not ever greens, really delightful where as the few houses that had some decor was a single or double strand of lights and nothing more....

I think that Stephanie Jarvis at the Chateau Diaries had a quote of 200,000 euros for central heating ! It is something to take into consideration. I have a huge house but still try to heat it all in case damp creeps in as it had lain empty for 20+ years.
