It's pretty much my go-to laying in bed game. It's so addicting. It makes me really really wish that Sony would make a new PSP. The portal thing for the PS5 is cool but I just don't need that when I could just look at my TV, if they did that device but made it a PSP dedicated device I'd be all f****** over it. I remember playing the demo a lot when I had my PSP. The intro music was always a banger for me that i have on my playlist whenever I workout. Its just that good.
You should try out Phantasy Star Portable 2 infinity. It was previously a Japan only title but it was translated fairly recently, and it’s my new fave. It includes all of the content from PSP2 but it also has a whole other “Episode” worth of content, as well as randomly generated missions. Not only that but if you’re emulating it there’s like 2 upscaled texture pack to make it look better, as well as accessibility “cheats” to make it play better (Things like being able to use the right analog stick for your camera, or change the displayed aspect ratio, or even playing it at 60fps. Although, word of warning the 60fps cheat apparently breaks certain systems so I can’t fully recommend it.) I’d def love to see your thoughts on it, but I’ve really enjoyed it so far.

Got both 1 and 2 when they first came out. The first Phantasy Star game I played was the very first one for the Sega Master System back in 1989. Then the 3 sequels for the Genesis. It's a pity they never did another Phantasy Star game in that style after Phantasy Star Online changed the series. What's a real shame is that Sega,in a typical boneheaded move, took both of the PSP games off the PSN store shortly after the Vita came out. Being able to play the games on the Vita would have made the game look much better as it did with other PSP games. Now getting the game is becoming more difficult due to the games being ignored by Sega now.
So i honestly don’t know what series is like before PSO since I’ve only played a tiny bit of Phantasy Star 2 when they released it on Switch before calling it quits. And tbh I’d have kept my PS Vita if they released Portable and Portable 2 on there. What really hurts is that Phantasy Star Nova never came to the west.
@@KatanaRikku Yes that is a pity. The original 4 games were more like Dragon Quest with a pretty great story that connects all 4 of the original games. I do like PSO2. I preferred the original version to New Genesis mainly because it felt more complete but even then I can’t deny how much better the combat feels.
@@KatanaRikku I did like the original PSO 2, but by 120 hours I had reached max level and basically max gear. It was also a huge money sink for any decent looking cosmetics
@@KatanaRikku no problem and enjoy that, I did manage to....play some Infinity back in the day of PSP....um, game acquiring lol, was only Japanese so hard to play but damn it was awesome, I'm rather quite jealous 😑🤣🤣🤣
Why does the HUD look so different when you're playing as Wendy? Is that PSU gameplay in those clips? The biggest issue I had with the PSP lineup was the desync that happened with enemies, they'd be at very different spots for each player making buffing and teamwork hard to do, but considering this was an issue in PSO for the 360 I'm guessing it was an engine issue. The PSV and PSO2 games really shook things up with the new engine and made the game perform much better. It's a shame PSO2 was a Japanese exclusive for so long, it's be great if they turned things around and we're able to recover from this mistake but only time will tell.
Yeah it’s PSU gameplay. IIRC I wanted clips of that area but didn’t have enough from the PSP footage or something. I felt the de sync issue was annoying as hell and just broke immersion way too much. PSO2 New Genesis is fun but right now I can’t keep myself interested in it. Even base PSO2 kept my attention for a lot longer than New Genesis. I’m hoping they can turn it around. Though to be honest I’d prefer if they just made an offline story focused Phantasy Star game with a multiplayer mode on the side like the Portable games. Those were my favorites
I remember i messed with this in an emulator lol. Seemed pretty cool. Playing on PSU Clementine now. Wish these PSP titles got a console port at least. Oh well. I can see why people wouldn't like the combat today, but it's actually really strategic with positioning as a force character and makes it more interesting than modern day zerg fests with their flashy and over the top combat.
Phantasy star online episodes 1&2 and Gauntlet dark legacy is what got me into RPGs and Diablo like games. I personally prefer the slightly slower pace the older phantasy star games had. It was more strategic and had you think more about positioning during combat New Genesis is just not for me idk if it’s the combat or just how bad the games world is content wise or maybe a lil of both. The older phantasy star games are still amazing till this day imo
In 1987, on the Sega Master System, Yuji Naka replied to a demand for long-lasting game with this formula. It was the first time RAM was used on a cartridge (to save your progression). With a patch, the game still holds today, as long as you're ready to go through the initial learning curve. It was quickly ported to the Sega Mega Drive, with even better graphics as Phantasy Star II but the crown has to go to the 1994 Phantasy Star IV. What makes Phantasy Star IV special? The impressive cartoon style cut scenes, although they pale in comparison to the amazing Lunar Eternal Blue for the Mega CD. When Sega's boss asked for an online game, Yuji Naka revived Phantasy Star, hence creating the very first MMO in the history of video game. I don't like it personnally. There are way way way better turn based RPGs on the system, starting with the stunning Skies of Arcadia (what a game!!!). Now that the old Dreamcast server is down, there is no point in playing Phantasy Star Online in my opinion. Now... This PSP one? I've never heard of it. I didn't know it existed because there is no Sega consoles anymore. It gives me PSO vibes
No this is a fully scripted video. My last video was more of just me playing the game. The thumbnails are similar though. I might need to change the old one
funfact, if the original PSO didnt exist, monster hunter wouldn't either. MH was heavily inspired by pso. just thought id throw that out there, since you compared it to monster hunter :) there's definitely a reason both game series feel somewhat similar
if you play on the schthack p server lemme know of you wanna play sometime, im restarting from scratch, lately. i didnt realize how much grinding that put me in for LOL

And then I actually got phantasy star portable 2 the actually game it was my favorite game. All accept for phantasy star portable 2 without infinity a DLC missing sequel to phantasy star portable 2. Hopefully sega can remake and reboot the both phantasy star portable sequels that includes phantasy star portable 2 infinity remake by adding infinity in it as part of psp2 remake treatment for next gen console like switch 2 and PlayStation 4 and 5 witch ever sega work which is easier for them.
FFX and KH2 got me into RPGs
The mmo is unironically tight. Even single player it's fun to just bust through the story real quick and be satisfied
Yeah the player shop was a pain in the ass to deal with.
Casts arn't robot. in lore, they are brains and nervous systems, controlling a small scale mecha.
Interesting. Is that something that was revealed in games like PSO? I remember hearing something about that
@@KatanaRikku it was in a lore thing on the offical site for pso2, if i remember correctly. it's been a long while.
Awesome video!! Goodness I miss these games! Phantasy Star portable 2 was my all time favourite, damn I really miss it 😭😭😆
Yessir I love the game so much. I have Portable 2 Infinity and plan on playing it soon. Thanks for checking out the video!!
@@KatanaRikku no problem and enjoy that, I did manage to....play some Infinity back in the day of PSP....um, game acquiring lol, was only Japanese so hard to play but damn it was awesome, I'm rather quite jealous 😑🤣🤣🤣
Really wished the game had multiplayer for the story mode. Would've been fun enjoying the journey with someone else instead of us just side missions.
Yeah that would have been sweet. More games need functionality imo
This game and it's sequel single handedly make me want to try playing pso2 again but also I do not like the cast cosmetics as much in pso2
i feel like PS Portable 2 were a good balance between changing weapon and the action combat pace
i still play this and the sequel psp2 on my psp in 2022 and phantasy star online/ genesis on pc :-)
I love to see people still playing the older Phantasy Star games
Great game, great review
Thank you
I remember i messed with this in an emulator lol.
Ayee thanks for watching my Phantasy Star videos !!
I still play this one and the 2 on my psp lol never gets old for me, but thats just moi!
Same I could still play it. I will play Infinity one of these days
Playing this on my steamdeck as we speak
Is part 2 Infinity better?
It has the main story and a second story, plus gameplay tweaks that make combat better so I would say yeah. I still need to play it though..
@@KatanaRikku play it then please?
Pokemon made me a JRPG fan.
I love Vivienne
I do too. She’s my favorite character in the series along with Emilia from the second game
Playing this on my retoid pocket 3
PSO wasn't the first mmorpg.
Hay DLC en la ISO de usa o europa? O solo en la japonés. No encuentro manera de poder pasarlos
I’m not sure if it’s still accessible
ethan is the man lol
This game is my childhood 💖
Same!! I’d love a new one
Is this a reupload?
No this is a fully scripted video. My last video was more of just me playing the game. The thumbnails are similar though. I might need to change the old one
Honestly, ethan was funny in how dumb he sounded
LOL
funfact,
if the original PSO didnt exist, monster hunter wouldn't either.
MH was heavily inspired by pso.
just thought id throw that out there, since you compared it to monster hunter :)
there's definitely a reason both game series feel somewhat similar
True the original PSO did precede Monster Hunter. And I love both series too. Tho I’m way more of a fan of Phantasy Star
@@KatanaRikku same
❤🔥
i still play pso to this day, too
if you play on the schthack p server lemme know of you wanna play sometime, im restarting from scratch, lately.
i didnt realize how much grinding that put me in for LOL
Sorry I’m late. I’m just seeing this.
Thank you for checking out the vid bro 🙏🏽 I’m getting a vita soon so I’ll be checking out Portable 2 Infinity and Nova with the English patch so I’ll be making vids on that some time this year
@@KatanaRikku I’m hyped for it.
Pso2 sux like they changed everything the enemies are lame on pso2 this game has a better look to me
I prefer the Portable games to PSO2
its not… its so dated and boring…
Nah
