You could have gotten probably 100k more views by showing the cleaning of the parts. People love to see that stuff for some reason. Good video good to see someone actually truly cleaning one of these things.

I'm glad (I guess?) To see I'm not the only one dealing with mold issues in my Mitsubishi units. Twice a summer we have to take it apart and deep clean. Such a hassle. We had no idea this would be an issue when we installed it, neither did the company we got it from.

James I just want to thank you for this video. It had been almost 2 years since I had my inside unit serviced. Your video taught me the easy way to do major cleaning and mine was filthy. There was a great deal of mold, mildew and a black dust in everything. I use this unit to cool and heat my whole house (600 sq ft) and now I understand why my allergies have been so bad. You are a life saver, thank you again.

Best video on Mitsubishi heat pumps....
I had a major leak after remodeling with demolition and drywalling.
Fan was all caked akd the drain tube plugged so AC condensation would not drain.
I had the entire unit pulled apart by following the video...
Cleaned out my drain tube with a copper ground wire to unplug it.
    Thanks

The AC started to have a strange smell and had a look to it. I cleaned regularly the 2 filters but still, the smell was still blowing from the AC. I started to look inside and noticed a huge amount of molds, diets, dust and all that jazz. I was looking for a way to do a deep cleaning but didn't where to start. This video really save me time and money by doing it myself. Really easy to do and now's I have a clean unit without any strange smell. Thank you 👍

James, thanks for the wonderfully informative video. Our a/c unit in our bedroom started dripping the other night, and after watching your video, my wife and I took it apart and cleaned it out. Besides it being extremely filthy and moldy, the drain hose was clogged.
We enjoyed it so much we took apart the larger unit in our family room, same thing! Nice to know they are sparkling clean now.
3 more to go in the rest of the apartment. It’ll be on my yearly spring cleaning list from now on.
Thanks again for the great video, you saved us €€€s!!

Thank you for showing the basics of maintaining this type unit. I had the techs out last year to clean my unit and my wallet! Thank you so much for your tip about using a wet vac outside. Our unit is only 1 year old and started leaking water inside yesterday. I washed out the filters which were dirty but water kept
shooting out the little rotating disk on the right of the Mr. Slim unit that scans the room. Our unit does not have a pump but works by gravity. The total run to outside is probably 30 feet. I went outside with my wet vac and attached my lint wizard which is made to clean a dryer vent. It transitions the vacuum hose tube down to a small diameter plastic hose. I turned it on and my wife said it sounded like someone slurping on a straw. So far it has worked. I did not see any dirt. But what happened next was truly amazing. I thought why not try it on the main house unit. The whole house unit was working fine. I attached the vacuum to the whole house outdoor drain unit and a explosion of rusty colored water came out. It had not yet clogged but my guess is that it was about to after 25 years. It had never been cleaned before.
I am surprised the ac guys never had done this before. I owe you a big one for this cleaning suggestion!! Thank you so much!!!!

Great video there. My Mitsubishi unit has similar problems. Cleaning the blower fan can be done with a vacuum ( smallest nozzle ) and a small brush like a paint brush if you don't feel confident in removing all the covers.
I suggest wearing a mask and using goggles so you don't breath any of the dust in or get it in your eyes. The blower fan is easily compromised in it's efficiency when it's dirty.
I had a professional cleaning service in to clean out my unit a year ago and I was totally surprised at how much dust , mould and other junk was in the unit. I had thought the unit was defective , but after a full clean the unit was almost as good as new.

Nice video. Thanks for posting it. One more thing for people to know: If a lot of the fins are bent over, this will reduce the efficiency of the unit. You can buy fin combs to straighten them out. The combs come in different sizes so buy a couple of sizes or a pack and see which one fit. This is especially true for window air conditioners where the fins get bent while moving the a/c, or people outside like to bend them.

The clip on the right side of drain pan was stubbornly about a half inch in front of where it was supposed to re-attach. Unable to find other videos with good step by step or visual of realignment of the pan. Eventually, took cover off other unit to look at it and eventually by the Grace of God it was lined up.

James enjoy all of your videos. One thing I would add is on the coil cleaning. I have been in the HVAC bussiness for 25 years. They sell special cleaner that works excellent. It will remove all the dirt off of the aluminum surfaces. The dirt acts as an insulator and deminishes the efficiency. There is a variety for the indoor coil and one for the outdoor coil. I would highly recommend using them for quality cleaning without any damage. Stay away from the acidic varieties unless the regular one will not cut through the built up debris.

Hi James I saw this video a while ago and I just found it again I have the exact same unit in my apartment and all maintenance does is come through twice in three years to pull out those blue filters and clean them and put them back in other than that these units have not been touched the one of my bedroom is in dire need of cleaning I loved your demo but I wish you had continued on showing pulling out the blower cartridge and the fins I'm sure my drainage tube needs cleaning but I am in a multi-story apartment building and I want to make sure there is no water damage from the condensation anyway if you could provide those two details that would help me out immensely thanks hope to hear back from you

    • @mattgustafson2516
      @mattgustafson2516 ปีที่แล้ว

@SizzlerWA I purchase mine locally and it is not really a name brand. For the indoor coil they do make a type that does not need rinsing. Some equipment makes rinsing difficult. If you can rinse the coil after it is sprayed then I would definitely use that type. As the result will be better. Just read the directions and as I said before stay away from anything that sounds acidic on the label.

Unfortunately, I am renting and the previous tenant (and landlord) did not maintain it well and now I have a terrible smell throughout the house coming from it. I cleaned the filters but it didn't help. I'm thankful for your tutorial because now I can deep clean it and hopefully fix the smell (and possible health hazard). Subscribed!

Glad you were able to go one step further. The smell will go away with proper cleaning and using a disinfectant in the cleaning process. It's a common problem with these type units. Thanks for subbing!

I use a chemical that is specifically made for cleaning the condenser coil that is self drying and they make another chemical for the outside unit. I apply the liquid after I vacuum and add a couple of chlorine tablets for the drip pan which keeps the condensate line clear. In the Philippines I clean my bedroom unit every 3 months because we use it 24/7 and as I am sure you know it will run more efficiently. Great video and I admire your work so much I wish you would come visit me for about 3 months to help us catch up on maintenance. ha ha

Thanks for the video, this was greatly helpful. My units performance was suffering (the wall unit!). It started to sound off. I think the condensation drain was plugging a little and the tray was retaining water. The higher humidity seemed to be sticking to the fan causing dust to accumulate in great amounts. Cleaned it off and it's working great! I'd like to propose that the drain hose should be vacuumed from the exterior at the same time one cleans the filters to aid in keeping the drain clear. It would be worth a shot. It's easy to do and could keep the unit happier between larger cleanings.

Good advice for vacuuming every time you clean the filters. Will save you from unexpected leaking inside from a clogged drain.

A little long-winded but so incredibly helpful. Both immensely informative and pleasant. Thank you!
Please keep showing close-ups of every clip and step you used to to open then close components. They were invaluable.
Greatly appreciate your warning about having a bucket on hand when clogs or condensation are in the mix.
    Cleaning the Blower Wheel Suggestion:
    1. The blower wheel (long cylindrical inner fan) can become very dirty over years with caked on dust. That situation can cause the fan to blow much less air and reduce the unit's ability to cool the room. As you said, every couple of years it is vital to clean it...safely. Many parts are difficult/impossible to replace if broken.
    2. We attached an inexpensive clear plastic painter's drop cloth to the wall just under the unit with blue tape then draped it out on to the floor. That caught everything (dust, dirt, condensation, etc) and made clean-up so easy.
    3. After we opened the front panel and removed the vanes (thanks for showing us how), we did not want to touch the condenser. We did not have a clog and were fearful of damaging it. So we held the black metal grate open from the bottom with one hand and gently cleaned the blower wheel from below.
    4. A round-handled paint brush (used for watercolors or found in an art paint brush bag) was the key. Whatever brush handle fits under the grate and has a round fluffy head. Gently brush off the blower wheel then spin it a little and repeat until the blower wheel is clean. You should knock off a lot of dust and have the clumps fall down on the drop cloth.
    5. After cleaning the blower wheel (and cleaning the filters and vacuuming the insides as you showed) leave the drop cloth down. Re-attached the cover and click the vanes back. Then turn the unit on full blast (maximum fan speed) for 10 minutes. That will blow the rest of the loose dust out and on to the drop cloth. When all dust has blown out, then carefully take down a fold up the drop cloth. You'll be amazed by how much dust/dirt (than can stain a rug) has been collected.
Depending on how dirty the wheel was, you could improve the unit's effectiveness by up to 50%.
Don't forget to also properly clean the outdoor unit too...a couple of times a year. That can make the coolant running through the indoor unit much colder. Cleaning that is fairly simple but has a few important steps to prevent damaging the outdoor unit and cleaning as much as possible.

Very helpful! Of note, at least for me, taking the plastic casing off was NOT as easy as it looked in this video. There are a bunch of little clips on the plastic casing that lock it in and took some real shimmying and tugging to get loose. I was afraid I was going to break the case or pull the whole unit off the wall but if you know about them and where they are, may be able to apply more focused attention to them. There are about 4 along the top of the unit and then one in the middle along the line where the screws are (mine is a 2 screw model like in the video). I suspect these get less stiff the more times you take off the cover so that may be why his is so much easier!

    • @ceciliadee132
      @ceciliadee132 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Same here. The case is very difficult to remove because of the four top clips. This video also does not show actually removing the blower wheel which is another tricky thing. You have to pull one end of the coil out away from the unit for the blower wheel to be pulled out. These things are not made with maintenance in mind. Also note that if your unit drains on the left side, you have to detach the indicator light electronic module/louver motor assembly before dropping the drip tray. To help for the next time I took a sharpie and marked the exact location of the clips on the outside of the case. This way you know exactly where to exert pressure.

Thanks! Helped a lot! My unit is a little different. Drain is on left side and vane motor is on right. Had to remove the vane motor. The top of the case pulls out easier if I press down where it snaps together in 3 places. Only part I could not super clean was the metal screen and luvers connected to the drain pan cause I could not fully disconnect it and hose it. I got it reasonably clean with a wet rag.

I found this helpful! It’s from Choice in Australia-
Should you clean the condenser coils?
The housing can be removed from the indoor and outdoor units to access the condenser coils, which benefit from occasional cleaning. We advise that you leave this job to a professional though, as you could void your warranty if you do it yourself, or worse, you could accidentally damage components and release refrigerant gas. There are also potential electrical safety hazards.
    Getting your air conditioner serviced
Your air conditioning system should be professionally serviced regularly - the service person will check the refrigerant gas levels, test the thermostat and make sure all the internals are in good condition. This will keep the unit running for many years.
Some manufacturers recommend the air conditioner should be serviced once a year. Others say that as long as you follow the instructions and regularly clean the filters and units, you'll only need to have the air conditioner serviced if a fault develops.
We asked CHOICE members about their air conditioner cleaning habits. Most said they clean the filters a few times each year, but only call for a service every few years or when the unit develops a fault. If in doubt, check the manual for your model or call the manufacturer for their advice.
    Here’s the full article-
