For calcium in their diet, feed them blanched organic kale, collards, and spinach. All high in calcium. You can also feed them blanched strawberries. Again high in calcium.

They are definitely escape artists. I once had one that escaped at least 5 times. One time I found him hidden in the bottom of an empty water bottle! They are awesome animals but definitely can be a pain.

They are known to escape when they want more favorable conditions than provided. If they are happy In your tank they don't want to go!

**also they are known to escape without having an air stone in there for oxygen.

Keeping them IN the tank. DUCT TAPE.... You must duct tape around all canopy openings very well. Yes, when cleaning and doing water changes, it IS an inconvenience, but it keeps them in the tank. Been keeping native Ohio rusties and native river fish for years.

My crayfish tank is heavily planted with water lettuce floating plants, and the crayfish love to climb in the roots and snack on any weak roots or leaves, the water lettuce is so thick that I need to cull it every other week, it also reduces the light levels to something more comfortable for them
It’s a 29 Bowfront, and I have about 4 in it, and due to plenty of hides, and the long, feathery roots of the WL, I have no aggression issues, they’re kept well fed
It’s the common northeast “Virile” species native to my area

It looks like a very interesting tank. And I think he was giving us the evil eye. Lol.

I have one from my lake. He decided to take my worm and hold on like no tomorrow when o was fishing on bottom 😂 few days ago I was on the hunt for him. I had put him in a big fish bowl to clean his tank. My dumbass cat must have stuck his paw in and got grabbed cuz he wasn't in the big bowl anymore. Spent the whole day looking for him. Finally found him. He's doing great. Every time I feed him he's all at the ready with his claws up 😂

Hi Dan, I bought a Mexican dwarf crayfish from a local fish store almost two weeks ago and I only seen it the first day. It was in my planted 65 gallon community tank and I have not seen it since. Also added a bamboo shrimp too and haven't seen it since either, my tank has tetras, a Bolivian ram, Cory's, BN plecos and gouramis and a male Betta. I have never seen any of the fish go after shrimp in my tank before so I figured that the crayfish and the bamboo shrimp would be okay.

I have 1 in my 75 gallon for over 13 months. He killed his roommate after a few months but he's doing great.

Thank you so much Dan! I have a 20 gallon that is collecting dust but after the knowledge you have presented you have encouraged me to finally put one in my 20 gallon. I plan on catching my crawfish here soon. Any information you can give in these videos helps a ton my friend! Is there any way you could provide their water specs of the crawdads own? Thanks regardless, I just dont want to go catch a couple and then kill them

You can put them in pretty much any water. From soft and acidic to brackish.

Add some pond dnails as an extra calcium food source.

I think after I eventually sell a few fish I may want to try mollies in my reef I may also throw a few into my freshwater tank but I have a young red tailed shark...maybe.

My 128 liter Crayfish tank has been running for 2 years now, never had one getting out, waterlevel is at 70 % and 50% of the tank is rocks in All sizes, the biggest of Them All eat one of the small ones, ones in a while if they dont get food, but i still have more than 100 Crayfish in that small tank. Planing to set Up a 1000 liter i got as upgrated Crayfish tank Soon. I use Crayfish in my brackish water tank as clearing crew, people said that the Crayfish i got dont do well i brackish, but the ones a have in there do well, have not seen one in the tank a while, got a moray eel reasonly, so the Crayfishes are hiding alot or the eel might have been eating it allrdy.

Do you know the species of crayfish? These are "virile" crayfish.

@@tenacious_freak5223 Maybe they have a milder temperament than the "Virile" crayfish. That's interesting.

You ought to design a crawdad tank that solves all the problems you mention. There are millions in it for you.

  • @TomokoAbe_

you also have to provide half land...that makes them difficult too

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly
      @DanHiteshew-oneandonly  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

These crayfish don't need land. They can crawl out of water, but don't really have a "need" for it.
