Yup. He was actually a top scorer on his college team. When he got to the NBA, he realized he wouldn't have a long career as a scorer against NBA talent, so he decided to overspecialize on rebounding and barely even practiced his shot anymore. Turned out to be the right decision. (Source is his book. I'm paraphrasing from memory of course)

That's what I'll always remember. It was just hilarious. And every time he made it, people went wild. It's kind of funny because over his career he averaged a three pointer almost every other game and shot 23% for his career. I don't think people realize how often he shot them and he'd make one for every four or five he shot. That's not bad for a guy who is notorious for not being able to shoot the ball.

Great, great college player though Houston needed a center and took Akeem who was the best college center of his generation. Houston can never be faulted for their choice. Portland had the #2 pick also needing a center and took Sam Bowie. I will always thank Portland for passing on MJ.
"Also why was his 3pt percentage so low if he looks capable of them"
The numbers don't lie. His 3 point shooting was just ok though everyone remembers the Portland playoff game. He focused his time on improving his mid-range shooting and turn around jump shots. No one has ever been better. Keep in mind that the Bull's had John Paxson and then Steve Kerr to shoot threes when players sagged on MJ. I knew someone who was involved with the Bulls organization back in the 90s and he told me Dennis used to shoot a lot of 3s in practice and that he could go on some insane streaks, like double digit streaks. He wasn't a terrible shooter, he just didn't shoot a lot because his main focus was defense and rebounding and obviously if you're out there shooting behind the 3 pt line, you aren't in position for an offensive rebound. That's why he often shot them when the Bulls were up big to give the crowd a thrill. Dude was a special player.

@@marioguti9887 Facts. In addition, many people don't remember Dennis averaged 25.7 points and 15.7 rebounds per game during his college career. He could score, but he knew his role in the NBA was to defend, rebound, and be an energy player. I saw Dennis play live at the United Center many times as a Bull during the regular season and playoffs (including Finals). I'd always laugh whenever he'd be aw-shucks after making a basket. They weren't luck! Finally, my father always pointed out his layups and how Dennis would make them more complicated than they needed, but he'd still make them.

I know that if we show every missed three we'd be here for days, but knowing about Dennis' work ethic, I bet he could play in today's game as a stretch four, make 1-2 threes per game and still lead the league in rebounds and defense.
Honestly, his rebounding was more about chasing the ball than body checking opponents, and his later years after the Pistons he was not so handsy as a defender, more of a slide his feet and cut you off type.
