The Bulls don’t pull off the second three-peat without Rodman. He was such a major force in that team and so vital to offense, defense and taking players out of their comfort zones. Rodman was the key to that three-peat.
It was the all around chemistry. Pippen learned a lot from MJ and MJ motivated Rodman. MJ's competitive dedication was so fierce. When the other players see how relentlessly bad you want it, they want it too. Imagining what they would've been like without any of the starting 5 is tough. Toni K was a huge contributor as well
Call me crazy, but if I was building my all-time team it would include Rodman. There have been plenty of great scorers over the years, but he might be the best defender and best rebounder of all time. He always hustles and brings a competitive spirit to the team... that is, if he shows up.
I used to have that debate with a buddy years ago. Rodman or Ben Wallace, and I always went with Wallace because Rodman would bring some drama and Big by contrast was a locker room leader. That said, if you're talking all round game and better athlete, I would go with Dennis. I have to be transparent, Ben Wallace is one of my top five all time favorites so Im biased.

Rodman completely shut down Shaq this game and held him to 0 points. What's more incredible is that when you watch the full game, it's Rodman doing it without help 90% of the time. Almost all teams doubled Shaq in the paint. The fact that Rodman was able to shut him down and hold him to 0 points over 3 quarters(including OT), with mostly single coverage, is simply insane. It wasn't the only time Rodman really dominated Shaq with defense, either. Shaq always seemed to struggle with Rodman, and Shaq even talks about it from time to time now on TNT. MJ was also ice cold this game, so I think it's fair to say Rodman won the Bulls this game.

Whats great about Rodman is that he can actually play any position. He can shoot, fly, dunk but he has a laser focus on the task that is given to him. He doesnt care about how many points he gets when hes already sorounded by point getters. He cares about what role he has to take on to contribute for the win. Temper aside, he's the guy you want to fill in the last slot on your team.

Rodman was the greatest rebounder of all time. The early guys don't count to me cause they played such a different game.

Dennis was a genius on the basketball court. He was also clutch. That Game 6 vs the Sonics back in Chicago things were starting to slip in the 3rd quarter. Rodman made three crucial baskets IN A ROW. As a Bulls fan, this happened to me as soon as the Bulls got Rodman, who previously played for the hated "Bad Boys" Pistons. As soon as I heard Rodman was coming to Chicago, I was like "We're going to win the Championship!" And then we did win it, and then again, and then again. Now Rodman is probably my favorite player of all time, even moreso than Jordan.

As a huge Bulls fan in the eighties and nineties, I find this statement incredibly optimistic. I never watched a game that came down to the wire and thought, "I hope Rodman shoots now," except for when Rodman was playing for the Pistons. But Rodman might still have been the best all-around player on the team, or at least second-best.

This video would be my "Exhibit A" in several cases I could make for/against certain NBA tropes. One case is the uniqueness of Rodman's career from his early Detroit slashing/finishing perimeter defender to his manic rebounding interior force late career with the Bulls. At different points of his career he was one of the rangey-est , quickest perimeter defenders , on par with guys like DJ and Coop, in terms of foot speed, length and quickness to one of the most physical, tenacious fundamentally sound interior defenders. If you were to divorce said aspects of his one career and extrapolate them into two separate careers, the one being the perimeter defender and the other being the 'banger, both "players" would be HOF'ers. Another case I would use this for is the ability of Phil Jackson's coaching staff to improve the fundamentals of their players , namely Shaq's atrocious footwork and positioning, as the Jackson era Shaq's footwork was much more fluid and less choppy and his positioning far more effective. The Shaq of Orlando and early LA had terrible habits and would merely try to overpower someone when his first or second moves were countered, later career Shaq had criminally underrated fundamentals. The last case I would use this video in is to put to rest anyone arguing that Shaq was better than Hakeem. This kind of thing never happened to Dream, early career Dream was a bit of a knucklehead like 'Sheed was so you might of been able to get him out his hook up, but when he recommitted to his faith and add the H back to his name all bets were off, he was the hoops embodiment of the whole "Bruce Li be like water" ethos. While I am a fan of 'Diesel, Dream was like a force of nature. Anyways thanks for the video Sean! Appreciate you!

What we see here is impeccable foot work with Rodman. Just to name a few recent great both offensive and defensive players who had impeccable foot work, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryan, Hakeem Olajuwon,, Steve Nash, Carmelo Anthony (in descending talent order). Basketball is played as much or more with your legs then your arms. Shaq is a legend with below average footwork and he is still an all time great. Respect.

WOW! I watched this game live and remember Jordan and Pippen tackling him near the end of the great comeback, but I was not aware of the fact that he held Shaq scoreless.
Rodman played with a lot of heart, and was such a good defender that he could still be a starter with virtually no offense. He made defense fun to watch. Then as you see, he makes those clutch free throws. Here’s a personal story inspired by Rodman. When my son moved into a higher basketball league, and the established players wouldn’t pass him the ball. I remembered Rodman, and told my son (who was upset and ready to quit) to be “nightmare guy” on defense. I told him, since they won’t pass you the ball, you can play a game within the game. I told him, “Who ever you are guarding to be all over them like Rodman, and make it a nightmare for them to where they pass the ball because you overwhelm them.” From the stands, it was one of the most entertaining games I ever saw because he got in the head of that other kid mentally, and completely shut him down. You could see his spirits lifted. He had a purpose. It was like that all season until one game; the coach and 3 of his star players missed a game for some other league thing. I forget what it was called. Traveling league?? Bottom line my son finally got to show he can play offense on that game. They came back from behind on his shooting a defense, and he scored some clutch jump shots. As a father. That was the best game of my life to watch. The whole family was in the stands on our feet. Some of us were in tears we were so happy. Pretty silly I know.
Shaq is definitely one of the best centers of all time, but when Rodman was on him his dominating game wasn't as good as it usually is, but his big ego won't let him admit it , Rodman is one of the Best defenders of all time for a reason

Rodman might be my favorite player of all time. Guy lived and loved the game.
Whats great about Rodman is that he can actually play any position. He can shoot, fly, dunk but he has a laser focus on the task that is given to him. He doesnt care about how many points he gets when hes already sorounded by point getters. He cares about what role he has to take on to contribute for the win. Temper aside, he's the guy you want to fill in the last slot on your team.

Basketball is nearly as physically demanding as rugby. Basketball players play almost half as less in a sport where your barely aloud to touch eachother. Now try running up and down a 150-200 feet pitch while being tackled by 250 pound men running at top speed. I know which one id rather do.

I never watched a game that came down to the wire and thought, "I hope Rodman shoots now," except for when Rodman was playing for the Pistons.

Rodman is still the best rebounding/defensive specialist of all time. What a pleasure to watch him in action as a Bull. As a Piston, eh, not so much.
This video would be my "Exhibit A" in several cases I could make for/against certain NBA tropes. One case is the uniqueness of Rodman's career from his early Detroit slashing/finishing perimeter defender to his manic rebounding interior force late career with the Bulls. At different points of his career he was one of the rangey-est , quickest perimeter defenders , on par with guys like DJ and Coop, in terms of foot speed, length and quickness to one of the most physical, tenacious fundamentally sound interior defenders. If you were to divorce said aspects of his one career and extrapolate them into two separate careers, the one being the perimeter defender and the other being the 'banger, both "players" would be HOF'ers. Another case I would use this for is the ability of Phil Jackson's coaching staff to improve the fundamentals of their players , namely Shaq's atrocious footwork and positioning, as the Jackson era Shaq's footwork was much more fluid and less choppy and his positioning far more effective. The Shaq of Orlando and early LA had terrible habits and would merely try to overpower someone when his first or second moves were countered, later career Shaq had criminally underrated fundamentals. The last case I would use this video in is to put to rest anyone arguing that Shaq was better than Hakeem. This kind of thing never happened to Dream, early career Dream was a bit of a knucklehead like 'Sheed was so you might of been able to get him out his hook up, but when he recommitted to his faith and add the H back to his name all bets were off, he was the hoops embodiment of the whole "Bruce Li be like water" ethos. While I am a fan of 'Diesel, Dream was like a force of nature. Anyways thanks for the video Sean! Appreciate you!

What we see here is impeccable foot work with Rodman. Just to name a few recent great both offensive and defensive players who had impeccable foot work, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryan, Hakeem Olajuwon,, Steve Nash, Carmelo Anthony (in descending talent order). Basketball is played as much or more with your legs then your arms. Shaq is a legend with below average footwork and he is still an all time great. Respect.

Rodman is one of the main reason why bulls got their 2nd 3peat. Imagine bulls going againts lakers without rodman. They cant stop shaq.
Rodman played with a lot of heart, and was such a good defender that he could still be a starter with virtually no offense. He made defense fun to watch.
Then as you see, he makes those clutch free throws.
Here’s a personal story inspired by Rodman.
When my son moved into a higher basketball league, and the established players wouldn’t pass him the ball. I remembered Rodman, and told my son (who was upset and ready to quit) to be “nightmare guy” on defense.
I told him, since they won’t pass you the ball, you can play a game within the game. I told him, “Who ever you are guarding to be all over them like Rodman, and make it a nightmare for them to where they pass the ball because you overwhelm them.”
From the stands, it was one of the most entertaining games I ever saw because he got in the head of that other kid mentally, and completely shut him down.
You could see his spirits lifted. He had a purpose.
It was like that all season until one game; the coach and 3 of his star players missed a game for some other league thing. I forget what it was called. Traveling league??
Bottom line my son finally got to show he can play offense on that game. They came back from behind on his shooting a defense, and he scored some clutch jump shots.
As a father. That was the best game of my life to watch. The whole family was in the stands on our feet. Some of us were in tears we were so happy.
