Love your animation and passion for your profession. It comes through in your teaching. Which I think is essential. You explain everything in layman’s terms which is absolutely wonderful. I’ve been singing for 46 years and I love watching you tutorials they’re very informative and also very helpful after all these years. Thank you so much!
Hi! Just discovered this today. I'm a teacher, whose vocal cords are suffering because of the strain you speak of. I'm really impressed: very warm, friendly, engaging, clear, informative lesson. I'm coming back from more - you can count on it! Thank you so much! CHRIS.
Lol you’re such a great teacher man. You have such incredible knowledge yet you know exactly how to keep your students entertained and help them remember what you teach
I know this is a 6 year old video, but i HAVE to comment. I've been singing and teaching voice for many years. This video connected me with something in my OWN technique that had gotten out of whack over the years;, and it's a biggie. After years of teaching, coaching, and playing the type of role that is "larger than life" (e.g. Dolly Levi), I was vocally shouting without even realizing it! Pushing chest voice upward and hyperphonating, causing a domino effect of tensions: supralaryngeal muscles, root of tongue, even jaw. I called a friend, another pro, and asked if she'd do some coaching for me to keep me honest in working thru these issues. I got ALL OF THIS from this one video. You are astounding, Justin. There are several excellent vocal pedagogues doing TH-cam series; you're the most prolific and offer the greatest "BREA(D)TH*" of instructional concepts. I can't praise you enough for all you do. My email signature line is a quote from the theologian Frederick Buechner: The place where [God] the universe calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger coincide.. You have definitely found your calling! *note breath pun of astounding creative personhood
Mr. stoney 1 great intro! Full of reminiscences! 2 humor ! In your so interesting lessons! Everything is si true( i’ m a vocal/ teacher myself!! 3. Filosophy I admire the most!! Sing! No matter what they say!👍👍 Great stuff ! Bravo!
+Justin Mode Well, you do know that the tenor gets a little weaker as he goes down right? Their chest register isn't as prominent as the Baritone's or the Bass. The best way to do this would be to breathe properly and sing down there. *It won't come out as strong as your high notes though. Also, you will reach the lower limit of your voice, when that happens, don't force it to sing lower.
Its mainly a matter of practicing singing lower. As for getting weaker as you get lower, you can probably mess around with the tone of your voice (lighter vs darker) to get a more full tone. I'm a tenor too and I can generally hit bass notes pretty solidly, though not with the same flexibility. It all comes down to practicing it and it can be pretty fun. Just be careful not to do too much because singing lower than you normally do wears on the voice a little faster than in your normal range
This was something I already knew about. You actually sing from the throat, because that's where the larynx is. However, what the teachers mean is that it should not FEEL like its coming out of the throat. That feeling you get is tightening muscles, or pushing the air through the folds. Pushing the air through the folds is a very improper technique. When a teacher says "support" they mean the proper usage of the diaphragm. Babies scream all the time, but you never see a baby with a hoarse voice. (Only if they're sick though). It's because they have good support. In order for this, the breath has to go low enough into the body. Justin nailed it!!!!!! If you combine proper breathing, and proper other techniques, then your voice will soar.
except breath "support" isn't what relaxes your tightening of neck/throat muscles. It's about manipulating your larynx and throat muscles that relaxes the right larynx and throat muscles.
"I can't lose My Passion for Singing", because Jason Stoney is a Coaching/ Teacher to the World, because he gets the point across like no other; with the use of all his many talents: organizer, actor, mimic, comedian and general bonvivant around the Great City of New York!!!! Blessings to Jason!
Is there an order through which one should go when it comes to these episodes? Or it doesn't matter that much? Maybe create playlists of Beginner, intermediate and advanced videos?
Actually, any order will do. However, Justin does have Beginner, intermediate and advanced on his vocal training course: voicelessonstotheworld.com/page/vocal_course -NYVC
Hilarious intro! Love your vids. You're far and away the best general vocal coach on TH-cam; funny, enthusiastic, know what you're doing, and extremely helpful, no "what other voice teachers won't tell you" type hustle. I'd take private lessons from you, except I'm on the West Coast. Can't thank you enough; my singing has improved greatly.
@@NewYorkVocalCoaching I may take you up on the Skype lessons some time. I have a vocal teacher I see about once a month. BTW, I'm now getting my own gigs with my trio, so technically I'm a pro. I'm the local singing trumpet player. There are better singers than me and better trumpet players than me locally, but none of them sing AND play trumpet, and I'm not shabby for an old guy, LOL.
Justin you are a godsend. Your exercises have been helpful even without being in a lesson with you one on one. Also thank you for making this entertaining even when you didn’t have to much appreciated.
YES! Have you heard Justin's range and how different he can make his voice sound. You got see this. Amazing: th-cam.com/video/tnSSp3R9Wd8v/w-d-xo.htmle
I'm finally starting to get the concept of supporting my voice (thought I had it down till I realised I was pushing air through folds), I got taught the concept of floating my voice above the folds while feeding it with a consistent supply, kind of like that lung capacity test where you blow into the tube and float the ball in the air above the liquid. Practicing is not easy because the temptation to squeeze or push is very much there.
Thanks for this, Justin! I'm noticing that when I switch from the sh to the pitched zh sound, it feels like my diaphragm (or the space between the bottom two ribs) kind of pulses, or pushes out a bit. Is that OK? Thank you!
I don't get it. I understand you expand the belly, back and ribs as you inhale and then sing on the exhale, but how long do you keep expanded and how many times do you go for the inhale then exhale during a whole song? Not sure if that makes any sense lol.
Afaik, everyone has their own capability considering diff people breath control on singing. Some have better control over air exhaled when singing, some are still learning to get better efficiency.
Hi JP! Everyone is different and every song is different, so there's no specific answer. But we can all develop great breath control! This episode might help you further: th-cam.com/video/fY3pfbe6EeU/w-d-xo.html -NYVC
Thanks a lot for the video!! I can't find an article that supports what you are saying though. Diaphragm is said to be used in breathing, I can't find anything that says it's used only for inhalation. I don't disagree with what you're saying, I just don't have an opinion on the matter so I am just searching for something that confirms it. If you could guide me somewhere that'd be awesome!!! Thanks again :D
Teachers who give this tip really don´t understand placement of the voice and how it affects tone quality. They possibly only sang in one "style". Then the equation steady breath support and great tone quality is correct. But once you mess up the placement of the voice, breath support is not the problem. Thank you Justin. Singing from the diaphragm was always a tip I hated.
People typically mean that they want you to take a "belly breath" or a "low breath". However, it's important to note that different teachers can mean different things when they say it. Which is why we believe in being specific with our language when teaching. For more on the different types of breathing check out Ep. 1 "4 Breathing Types". -NYVC

I am a newbie vocalist, and this is so informing! What about diaphragmic pressure?
Hey Justin, I recently found your channel and I like your teaching. You're doing a great job. But I have a question for you: I try to teach myself how to sing the vocal fry for Metal songs and I came up with the advice to mix the vocal fry with air and train my diaphragm. I somehow sound awkward and I can't achieve the style I want to without hurting my voice of which I know is the wrong way to do it. So I browsed your channel but didn't find any video that could help me to achieve my goal of singing in vocal fry / screaming. Do you have any advice how to do it correctly? Greetings from Germany :)
You're crazy and we love you Can you kindly tell us about the Bel Canto 'Inhalation of the voice' technique? Do these Opera singers Actually sing whilst inhaling air??
+Gemma Doyle It allows you to minimize the airflow through the glottis while singing - this means you are protecting your vocals cords while singing :) This is just advanced breath support. It doesn not mean you are inhaling the air - you are just stopping yourself from overblowing the air while singing.
Hey Justin i really need you to make a video , i can't get my throat to relax for the sake of me , it just tense up at the slightest thing like just exahing a diaphragmic breath pleaase hellp
If you'd like to see Justin answer one of your questions on an upcoming show, be sure to email your question to Justin at questions@voicelessonstotheworld.com! :)
Do we still use diaphragm in singing high notes (mixed and head)? Or we'll use our chest?. Sometimes I cant sustain high notes when belting and singing head voice.
SO many ways! Have you heard Justin's range and how different he can make his voice sound. You got see this. Amazing: th-cam.com/video/tnSSp3R9Wd8v/w-d-xo.htmle
He does look a bit like Leo Dicaprio, but he is also on the same bizarre spectrum as Jeff Goldblum. Not nearly as wacked though. Needless to say, love this guy.
i struggle to go with the exercise from first to last.can u give me some tips?also should i practice singing or singing exercises standing rather than sitting?i have been told that practicing singing while sitting causes diaphragmatic tension,so i should avoid that
Hi Raiyan! That's okay if it's not perfect. It's still helpful to do! And you can definitely practice while sitting. Try to also incorporate standing while practicing as well. Either way, ensure your sternum is lifted so that your breathing system isn't collapsed (like in a slouch). -NYVC
Nice! Could you please do a video on how to get out of my chest voice? I think I have overused my chest voice, and I'm stuck in here. Could you please help me out?
+Hans Gamido That's an excellent suggestion and something I know many singers struggle with! Be sure to send it to Justin at questions@voicelessonstotheworld.com!
Dear Justin, I’m a light tenor. Lately, I’ve been singing with too much breath so I couldn’t blend the registers smoothly. I thought I need some adduction. So I tried to added some closure into my voice. I’ve gained some vibrato and be able to hold the breath by doing this. However, my girlfriend said my voice sounds harsh now and it gave her a headache. I wonder if I did it wrongly?
Yes, I do trills. Let me ask a question though. If breath should not be held back by the cords, what is adduction for? Isn't it for using less breath and more efficient by closing your vocal cords?
I don't understand the controlled exhale part. teachers say "engage your abdomen", but that is too vague for me to get the specific meaning and what I should do
Tensing the upper abs will actually cause tension at the cord level. Perhaps you mean you are resisting airflow with the lower abs? I'd need more specifics. -NYVC
Quick question .... When breathing with my diagphram , I felt like I still wanna inhale more air because it didn't feel/felt enough air in my lungs . When im trying to inhale more It won't let me because I already let all of my stomach. It was easier when breathing with my chest . Is that normal ? If it isn't is there any way to prevent that ? Please leave a reply I really appreciate it
Inhale with diaphragm. The exhale will happen because of the pressure. In singing, you want to resist the exhale by keeping everything expanded. Not make the exhale happen by pushing in. -NYVC

Justin appreciates your kind words Maria! :) -NYVC

The hilarious coach ever seen
Yes, very entertaining! So glad you are enjoying Justin's Videos! -NYVC
i struggle to go with the exercise from first to last.can u give me some tips?also should i practice singing or singing exercises standing rather than sitting?i have been told that practicing singing while sitting causes diaphragmatic tension,so i should avoid that
Hi Raiyan! That's okay if it's not perfect. It's still helpful to do! And you can definitely practice while sitting. Try to also incorporate standing while practicing as well. Either way, ensure your sternum is lifted so that your breathing system isn't collapsed (like in a slouch). -NYVC
You're a dork. I love it :D
So many dorks around here! 🤓🤪 -NYVC
Hahaha love that intro

Dear Justin, I’m a light tenor. Lately, I’ve been singing with too much breath so I couldn’t blend the registers smoothly. I thought I need some adduction. So I tried to added some closure into my voice. I’ve gained some vibrato and be able to hold the breath by doing this. However, my girlfriend said my voice sounds harsh now and it gave her a headache. I wonder if I did it wrongly?
Without hearing it, it would be difficult to answer. But the breath should not be held back by the cords. Do you do trill exercises? -NYVC
Yes, I do trills. Let me ask a question though. If breath should not be held back by the cords, what is adduction for? Isn't it for using less breath and more efficient by closing your vocal cords?
I don't understand the controlled exhale part. teachers say "engage your abdomen", but that is too vague for me to get the specific meaning and what I should do
Perhaps you can start by checking out the other breathing episodes on this channel Jon! - NYVC
now it makes sense to me now. haha great video
Excellent! :D -NYVC
Is it okay to tense up the abdominal muscles to relieve tension from the throat while singing?
Tensing the upper abs will actually cause tension at the cord level. Perhaps you mean you are resisting airflow with the lower abs? I'd need more specifics. -NYVC

Quick question .... When breathing with my diagphram , I felt like I still wanna inhale more air because it didn't feel/felt enough air in my lungs . When im trying to inhale more It won't let me because I already let all of my stomach. It was easier when breathing with my chest . Is that normal ? If it isn't is there any way to prevent that ? Please leave a reply I really appreciate it
Hi Master! Send your question in to Questions@VoiceLessonsToTheWorld.com! -NYVC
cute guy- great lessons! two thumbs up
Thank you so much for your support for Justin! Happy Singing, from NYVC!
When I try doing this exercise I ran out of breath before I finished
Check out our Episode 62 "Running Out Of Breath"! -NYVC
So, in the case of breathing exercises would one inhale using the diaphragm and exhale using the abdomen?
Inhale with diaphragm. The exhale will happen because of the pressure. In singing, you want to resist the exhale by keeping everything expanded. Not make the exhale happen by pushing in. -NYVC
