Was debating Focusrite vs Behringer vs Steinburg for a while but the Behringer is just priced so well for you get that even if it went bad or something I wouldn't feel like I'd lost too much. So this video helped me decide to go with the U-Phoria. Thank you for the informative, entertaining video!
The Focusrite does have signal led's . They are around the gain knobs as in picture. The signal is green when talking and turns red when it clips. Great Video!!
You forgot one important thing! The 404 has an external power source option so you can use a balanced power supply to completely deaden any of that 60hz noise you may be getting from the USB power. ;) Good review though!
But, listen: I have tested my Steinberg UR12 with a 5v DC (you can choose between USB or the 5v DC) and the noise is still there! Is it perhaps the Presonus Eureka PREAMP? ... I think so.
WOW thank you for that info! IMHO USB powered when powered over your PC or lap top it affects you LT a lot, maybe for less demanding things is not important since i don't much about recording don't know...but for sure i do know it ''rape'' your lap top power for no reason, cooler will for sure turn on more often due LP will consume more and get heated etc etc,,THANK YOU SO MUCH now i will by this 404. Was barking my head some time and exactly USB powering was my main problem with budget priced interfaces due i don't intend to travel wit it anyhow...yet...
That's going to come in very handy for me when I use mine to run multiple instruments into my pedalboard in live shows (if live shows ever happen again! -- kidding, kidding), since I won't have it plugged into a computer. In fact, I was almost thinking of this in the opposite way you mentioned it: it's nice that it will function via USB power, without its wall wart. I was wondering if, since it does have that external power supply, it would still run off of USB power, so it's nice that it does both.
I was looking into compact interfaces for live and studio use. Your video on the UMC404HD helped me get it. I used it this Sunday live all day and it was a great, crisp sound, with no issues. It did exactly what I needed it to do. I like the 4 inputs because I play multiple keyboards and those inputs help me have one hub for all my levels, and I can have the stereo signal for each board. I also run MainStage 3, 2 USB powered keyboards (I have a USB hub), and one via the MIDI ports. I am happy with my purchase! THANKS!
88KeysMan, great to know you use it live. I’d like to build similar setup with iPad connected through USB hub and Lighting/USB adapter. What do you think? Is it possible to go off-the-grid with UMC404HD? Can it work completely portable powered by USB powerbank?
That is not a review, is just a spec comparison... also a proper comparison would have been between Scarlet 2i4 and BEHRINGER UMC204HD. The similar price is an invalid point.
Price comparison makes all the difference because its all about what one can afford. I understand what you mean though because he didnt test how they sound because scarlett sound a bit better not enough that you cant adjust some knobs and get to but still sounds better and with this review they wouldnt know that.
Coach you should have at least got a more fair model of Focusrite to compare. For this video should have been the scarlet 2i4. This comparison was not doing a favor for Focusrite or compare the 2i2 with the UMC202.
wow so many people criticising this very useful and helpful comparison ( if not review). I cant thank you enough for this video. In this price rang you draw people to all th most important issues. Pre amp quality, input out put availablity, bang for buck etc. I cant belive the features of the Behringer for the price..so tempted now after seeing this. My scarlett 2i2 sounds good but stopped working recently. My PC sees it, says it is installed correctly etc as does my DAW ( Sonar) it lights / powers up too etc but will not output sound or take in any signal fo recording. Time for a change maybe me thinks.
Mike, thank you for the kind words. If you think it's time to upgrade, I've put some links to a few different options down below. Best of luck my friend.
It's also worth mentioning that the mono button on the 404 is part of the monitoring area and has no affect while recording through usb. If you plug into only channel 1, pressing the mono button will not add your audio to any other channel for recording.
emmanuel frimpong is it true UMC404HD can work completely portable powered by USB powerbank? I’d like to use it off-the-grid connected to iOS device through USB hub and Lighting/USB adapter. What do you think? Is it possible?
@@DanielSamulewiczXXI very good question. I've never tried hooking up an interface to a powerbank. My guess is that the connection would not be fast enough for the audio and that it would need to be directly connect but I honestly don't know. Maybe someone here can help out.
This wasn’t as much a review. It’s more like a spec comparison. What about preamp performance? What about sound quality? What about input/roundtrip delay? What about driver stability? Lots of questions to be answered for this to be a comparison review.
Definitely Behringer. They've come a long way this company. Midas legendary pre amps? Unbelievable! Focus rite is geared up for basically guitar and one vocal track. Behringer is geared up for semi pro and professional. Focus rite is geared up for the novice beginner. We've all been down the beginner path. So both units are good units. The Behringer is more for experienced. When I first started out? I would've went for the focus probably. Why? Because I didn't know about inserting, monitor mixing, padding input gain, when to use direct injection verses dedicated line level inputs.
I've been using a UMC204 for a few years now and plan on upgrading to the 404 sometime in the near future. Using various microphones for vocals, I think the MIDAS designed preamps are just as good as the Focusrite ones (Don't @ me). Obviously the better the microphone, the better the signal but they do well even with cheaper ones.
I am prob going to get the uphoria 1820 but i started with a scarlett solo studio bundle which I love but I have alot of behringer products and have had 0 problems knock on wood so I am glad to have come across this just to solidify my decision keep up the good work
Or one can buy the UMC202HD, which is quite similar to the 2i2, except the sexy colour (a must have for hipsters I know, and I agree it looks great) and the software bundle.
Szabolcs Mate I completely agree with you. 💯 If you can do with just two inputs then you will be the smartest person in the world forgetting the umc202hd because everything's the same plus you get all that money savings.💸💰💲💲💲💲
This guy deserves more subs, he seem's like someone who would have at least 10k subs or more. Good video, good channel, and a nice studio. Good work TheCoachMusic.
i been using both, i like the focusright (the hd preamps) and scarlett do not sound like the higher line of preamps focusright, behringer sounds good ii a very good price, so i felt it has more headroom than other interfaces, on this case behringer works better to meee.
When I buy any audio products my main concern is sound quality. We know that they both have different mic preamps, and that can make a big difference. We also have to assume different IC's, ADC and DAC chips will be different, as well. All the analog components will be different. One could have a digital volume control, and the other analog. And that could very well be the biggest difference between the two. With a digital volume control, bit stripping has to be managed very carefully. (Bit stripping is when lower the volume, resolution decreases. So, if you start off with 24 bits, you only get that at max volume. As you lower the volume, you also lower the bit rate.). And with analog volume controls, the quality of the pot makes a very big difference. The results you came to at the end of the review may only be superficial. There's a very good chance that Focusrite may have held back on features and used higher quality components, resulting in a better sounding product. Keep in mind that this is just an example and may, or may not, be true. I haven't heard either because I'm trying to figure out which one will be best for me. If the Focusrite was the clear winner for sound quality, I would be willing to buy a more expensive model to get the features to go along with the better sound.
Thanks coach I'm getting the behringer. My windows 7 computer only has usb 3.0 ports which are not working well with my m-audio fast track pro, I sure hope the behringer is good with the 3.0 ports. I'll let you know.
Thank's man! I've been looking for an audio interface to use with garage band that has 4 live inputs. But could not find any good reviewers for the Behringer, and you come along with 2! Nice slick looking productions, impressed.
Dude. Great review of the Behringer UMC404HD! Based upon your review I've decided to purchase one. Hope Behringer is compensating you because you do a great job! I noticed the M-Audio synth in the background. Do a review of that beast if you haven't already.
Was wondering if you had the same experience I did. UMC404 turned out to be complete garbage once I was trying to get competitive mixes and knew what I was doing.. lol
Good review, upbeat and personable guy, enjoyable to watch. I realize you compared the 2i2 with the UMC404 largely due to price similarity, but in reality the more apt comparisons are either 1) the UMC202 with the 2i2, or 2) the UMC404 with the 2i4. Those configurations are much more in line with similar build, features, etc. (Granted, the 2i4 is easily $75 (at least) more than the 404, but Behringer can't help it if it's so cheap. My debate now is with a 2i4 (I can get a almost-new one for about $120) vs. the 404. The 2i4 of course has a pad, for example, and 4 ins (but still only 2 outs, a Behringer advantage); the 2i4 also has mono/stereo and a dual source headphone switch. What I need more of is anything that separates them; latency better on one vs. the other? Other than that, it would seem that the Behringer is the obviously better buy for what you get, and it's not close. I'm trying to figure out why I should get the 2i4 (I have to admit, I almost bought one until seeing this video!). I'll probably lean with the Behringer, as I'll do most recording at the home studio (not a "traveling" guy so the need for separate power isn't a big deal to me, although the USB-powered feature is nice). Are there any actual performance issues vs. the specs I would consider? I don't see any (both have same sampling rates and max, right?). Anyway, I enjoyed the video, good work. Just thinking that the combos I mentioned make a more "fair" comparison, even if the price is way different!
So I went with the Behringer after all... got a deal on a new one for $85. At that price, it could suck and I wouldn't feel too bad. But it's not going to suck. I also like its layout better, looks more like a board, which I like). Coming in a few days, can't wait. Thanks again for the review.
Tarun Daodat good question. Ive have used both and find the equal in there one way. But the simple answer is I don't own the Scarlett anymore and I didn't want to lie.
Ah man....I would love to have done a sound comparison . It's the 1 thing I regret not doing for this video. Reason 1 is that I don't physically own a focusrite so I went with a spec comparison instead. Reason 2 is that since 80% of a TH-cam is watched in mobile/tactile devices I didn't think you'd be able to hear the real difference... Still I should have done it. Oh well next time.👍
Behringer: Better value, more I/O, more control, far more options for different kinds of inputs and outputs, great sound quality, knobs and buttons work just fine and feel good (although they aren't as nice as Focusrite's controls). Focusrite: Compact, simple, better reputation, slightly better build quality and higher quality buttons/knobs, looks cool, arguably better sound quality than the Behringer (basically not noticeable), arguably better included software. I'd say in the majority of cases the Behringer is the better option just because of the sheer amount of I/O but the Focusrite is also a great option. One thing to note is that I'm pretty sure coronavirus hit Behringer pretty hard compared to Focusrite because I haven't been able to find a lot of Behringer's products in stock, and if they are in stock the prices are grossly inflated or the estimated shipping date is months from now. That's the reason why I decided to purchase the Focusrite 2i2; it's was still in stock and being sold at regular MSRP so it was the better option. Writing this in July, it looks like stores won't be getting shipments of Behringer's products until at least the end of August.
True! I own a UMC202 but have been considering upgrading to the 404. I checked on Sweetwater the other day and the 404 isn't in stock. I assumed it was out of stock as people must've been buying during quarantine. Didn't even think of the fact that they'd just put it all on hold due to the pandemic
I use to be jaded towards Behringer products, then I needed a cheap solution in a fix and bought a Behringer mixer. I can honestly say it passed my expectations and think I might pick up the 404HD interface, more ins and outs for a great price? why the hell not?
Wouldn't call this a review. A review involves actually using the products and usually even giving samples of what the product produces. This is more a spec overview/comparison. On that note I plan on actually testing the interface with an at2020 mic, a guitar, and some aux input from game systems (mostly to capture 3ds audio when I record/stream it) Well produced content though, I'm hoping to get there with my content at some point.
A real Balanced Observation and an unbiased commentry..by Music Coach..Jonan..Thank you,I am rightly guided to select..May i request another Video..how best to connect the IN/OUT ports to really, really to enjoy, using the U phoria 404 UMC Bheringer.Loving Regards.DR.Nanda..INDIA
You're good ! Very cool and funny video! I'm a fan! 👍🏻ans i'm very interested to buy the Behringer so : thanks for help me to make a choice! 😁 jean-marc from France
I guess my question to it would be "where's the catch?". Behringer going the full featured at a fraction of the price, it must staffled "quality" but people state that this is not the case... so where were we getting screwd over when it comes to Focusrite or Presonus (being the consumer but high quality products battling for the best price)? unless this is not case and with behringer taking cuts on other more hidden aspects... maybe component's durability? Another interesting concern that comes to my mind is the fact that Behringer doesn't use propietary drivers, but of course the stem question out of it would be "is it really a big of a problem?" (I would stretch it to the "yes" taking into account that ASIO4ALL has a relatively slow development, and that you'll not have Behringer support on that regard in case of any problem). At the end of the day, for what I'm hearing being said, latency-wise is not much of a problem and direct monitoring solve the ms it could have (altho it'll not be a solution if you are tracking guitars throu amp sims, tho... but again: how much of a problem it would be?). Even this being a gang for the buck, I'm still daring to ask the questions, more specially for those who that amount is not practically a spare change (as me, 3rd world, skyhigh dollar-to-currency price, absurd import taxes) but still in need for reliability and quality. All in all: really nice video!
The truth is I'm still trying to find out "What's the catch?" myself. I almost always make these purchases as a skeptic who needs to be convinced. I believe most consumers are that way. So far, it just seems to be an overall great product and they hasn't any sign of being otherwise....SO FAR... Thank you for the comment. 👍🏼
same here, i go on amazon and see all these nice behringer audio interfaces with all these specs but dwelling on the price i have 2nd thoughts about it on and on and can''t seem to make an accurate decision which is better. spending 100 dollars on the 2i2 solo(2nd gen) isnt a big deal for me btw, plus i am justing starting out so all those things they have isnt a big deal for me either.
Here's my two cents worth on the catch. I llooked hard at PreSonus and Focusrite at the $100 price point. For both of these you get much better DAW included in with the hardware. I know Studio One 3 Artist is included with the PerSonus hardware and is a $99 value if bought separately. I thought the UM404HD was a much better value for its hardware features and was will go spend the extra money on the DAW. I got lucky and found a license transfer for Studio One 3 Professional for $199. It details for $399. FYI, the UM404HD comes with a 3yr warranty and is a real solid build. The sound is pristine, no noise whatsoever.
Ariel Vinda I have a 12 input Behringer mixer I got for $99 with USB, effects and everything. I thought the seller was running a scam it was such a good deal. Turns out it was just a good deal, and it ran fine and sounded great until I accidentally put 240 volts through the USB port. (The mixer still works fine, but the USB functionality didn’t survive)
The only sham found is the fact that at $99, the Focusrite and the Presonus come with a "package". Usually a junk cable, some headphones and software. The Behringer will hold it's own as a interface, but if your using an included DAW then you have already shorted yourself and shouldn't be concerned with a $100 purchase. Just starting out you should buy affordable "starter equipment" until you know you can and will use it. The interface is important and the Behringer at least has enough in/outs to keep you from having to buy bigger in the first year due to lack of inputs. After that spend your money on a quality DAW not a $100 starter, and a good set of monitors that sound flat, if you can make your recording sound good through them mixing in a proper DAW then your on the right track.
I have a scarlett 2i2 1st gen, and when heavy guitars direct in it clips. Focusrite's response to this well known problem doesnt sit well with me. Have you ever encountered that problem with the Behringer? It looks like a lot of beast for the money.
Michael Peretto I have not encountered that problem but that's probably because I don't really record anything too heavy and when I do I usually switch to a different mic. Lately I've been micing amps. I'm really into that sound at the moment. In conclusion I can't really give you a fair answer on that BUT it is a beast when it comes to value and any music I've done in the past year has been recorded on it.
I have problems with the UMC404 as the output volume is so damn low. I read so many complaints about it on the internet. Before I had cheap Edirol speakers with its own volume knob which you can crank up. My new much better and more powerful KRK Krokit6 speakers hardly get up to the volume they can handle. If I connect my Tascam recorder directly to it the windows almost break; with the Behringer it hardly gets 40% of the KRK's capacity. What could be the problem? Even Behringer themselves do not have a good solution. Before I had the Behringer I owned the Line6 POD Studio UX2 and it was awesome. Because of a peak in the electrical system after a lightning strike it broke and bought the Behringer. I think I made a mistake. But correct me if I'm wrong, please.
I bought this product about two years ago but started to have some issues with this year. Regardless of how I tried to touch bases with Behringer, nothing worked. They publish no telephone numbers so getting through to them is a royal pain in the ass. It was easier for me to order a Tascam. It is coming today.
I bought the Behringer umc404hd in 2020, and according to a hundred of forms of people frustrated with this device, the latest driver has made working with more than two inputs at once literal hell. Everyone seems to have the same issues, and almost every solution I've seen involves reinstalling the old driver at some point. Windows 10 really doesn't seem to like this device for whatever reason. I know very little abour audio engineering, but the complaints about this device since 2018 have been piling up. And that's not for nothing.
I was ready to be upset about this, too, but after a little more research, I found that it turns out to be a Windows thing rather than a Behringer thing. Windows used to handle this multiple inputs, but incurred audio quality problems: there was crackling in the signals. So they removed that functionality from the WASAPI driver, which is why you won't be able to easily get four inputs in Audacity (there's a way to do it, but it looks like a pain!). If you are using a DAW with support for an ASIO driver, though, you're all set. So it's not so much that Windows 10 doesn't like the device, but rather that it doesn't like taking more than two inputs. So your options are: 1. Use that older driver version from Behringer, or ASIO4ALL. 2. Ditch Audacity and use a different that has ASIO support. 3. Recompile Audacity from its source code, including ASIO support when you do so (there's documentation on the Audacity website for how to do this). Myself, I intend to do #2 -- sort of. I'll continue to use Audacity for direct-to-stereo recording, but I'll finally attack the learning curve of Reaper for anything more involved. Or who knows, maybe I'll see what's up with this Tracktion software Behringer is going to send me for registering the interface.
@@EdMuse1122 I feel like I've done More googling in these last week than I have in my entire life. But you are correct! It's Windows 10 that is the pile of shit, not the audio interface. The UMC404 is actually quite a powerful little machine. I swear, there is so much to learn that my entire perception of how it all works and my opinions on different companies can change overnight! I definitely understand why people go to school for this kind of stuff. It's a hefty load but I keep learning and am improving my set up. I did manage to get my Behringer to record 4 tracks at once in audacity, however a couple days later I ditched audacity due to realizing my limitations. It only took me about a week and a half of learning and experimenting, but I was finally able to actually record something beyond just testing today! Currently using Reaper and have been loving every minute of it. Spent the last 24 hours figuring out what/how latency works and the many ways it ca be adjusted. Thanks for the encouraging words and technical support, friend.
@@SeanLaMontagne Hey, thanks for the reply to my reply! I chuckled a little at your comment that you "definitely understand why people go to school for this kind of stuff," because I actually went to one of the leading universities for sound recording technology -- but I majored in music performance, there! Now, 30-odd years later, I'm teaching on the faculty of two universities, but I'm also the tech guy for the music department at one of them. So I'd love to hear about how you got Audacity to take four simultaneous tracks from this thing, because short of re-compiling it with ASIO support, right from the source code, I couldn't find any other way to do it -- other than ditching Windows 10 and getting a new Mac (mine is literally 16 years old!). Also, have you found a decent way in Reaper to use your UMC404 as the input device but use your internal sound card as the output device? That was one thing I really liked about Audacity.
@@EdMuse1122 I haven't figured out how to use my computers soundcard as the output device. I only use my computer for music production things (I also use finale for scoring and whatnot), so it's not a big deal to me not being able to ise my built in speakers. To get audacity to record 4 channels, I had to install the older version of the windows driver. I found it in a forum post in a dripbox link, lol obscure i know. And I think I had to ipen the Windows sound controls and change the advanced settings for the UMC404, and change the settings in the drivers pen control panel to allow 4 track recording, and chabge the device settings in audacity to allow 4 tracks. Basically download the old driver, and change the drivers settings in like 3 different locations, THEN I can record 4 ttacks with my 4 inputs. OH and i used Wasapi for the driver. Downside is I can ONLY record mono channels, no more no less. And audacity needs me to use the windows sound card to work othwrwise all I get is error messages on recording and/or playback. And even then Audacity is figting against me constsntly and sometimes will stop recognizing the recording device, or just refuse to let me record altogether. Also check the sample rates in all 3 of those locations I mentioned earlier along aith making sure whatever is set to 24-bit instead of 32 (idk what that means but the UMC only had 24-bit input/output options and Audacities default was 32 I think?) A lot of stuff that goes way over my head, but somehow I was able to get it working. The constant error messages, Audacity choosing to work whenever it wants to is what pushed me to Reaper. If a lot of what I said made no sense, let me know and I can try to do a better job explaining my process. I was pissed off virtually the entire time with audacity so my memory is a little fuzzy on the set up.
Great video! One think that I am super confused about is that "Both are USB Powered". I don't think UMC404 is USB powered. I went on buying one and every where I looked, it said requires external power supply. Can some shed some light on it? Thanks!
None of the above require external power supply. However, UMC 404 comes with external power option. You will need it only when you want to use condenser mic or all 4 input ports. I hope that answers your question.
Ehm, correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't it YOUR question? Still, thanks for clarifying. Also, I hear that using the power supply can help remove hiss (caused by using the computer for power) thru your speakers/monitors. What I would like to know is whether having the power supply in actually prioritises using that source over the USB power.
thanks, but there is not justice for 404 comparing weights, it has 4 channels vs 2 channels of the 2i2. I was a minute to buy Scarlett but the 404 looks good.
I can't speak for the Focusrite, but I own the 404. It seems to work well, for the most part but... I have it connected to my stereo system to play my MP3 music collection. With NO connection to the computer, only to the stereo, I have a high noise floor (hiss). I can remove the hiss by using my old DBX 3bx to spread everything out. But if the focusrite doesn't have this hiss.. I submit a win for focusrite.
I understand this is for the 404. But what about the 1820? I had a question if you happen to know the answer to. Does the 1820 have Direct Monitoring? Also, is the 1820 capable of playing existing tracks through the DAW while recording new tracks at the same time? I want to be able to play along to the existing tracks to layer new tracks. Is that possible with the both the 404 and 1820? Thanks! Jeff
SS MUSIC STUDIO I haven't had any problems with mine but you are the 2nd person to tell me about a power supply issue. You are in a unique position to be able to test both in a side by side audible comparison.
Nice vid! Just took delivery of a Behringer UMC404HD to replace my Presonus Audiobox 2-channel interface. I have to say I'm really surprised at some of the features the Focusrite is missing that not only does the Behringer have, but the cheaper Presonus did, too. Particularly, I'm kinda shocked that the Focusrite has no clip lights. How do you get along without those? The first thing I do when I plug in and check an mic or other audio source is set the level on the interface using the clip light. When I was shopping for a new interface, I considered the Focusrite, and I'm pretty glad now that I didn't buy it. BTW, where you chalk up the weight of the Behringer as a minus, I thought of it as a plus. I'm not sure if heavier really is better, but I'm pretty impressed by the build quality and the enclosure. Behringer says it's "built like a tank," which is good, since I not only intend to use mine for recording and streaming, but for multi-instrument inputs on a pedalboard for live shows, since -- and this is a huge plus you didn't mention in this vid! -- all four inputs will accept high-Z, instrument level signals. Not only is this the only unit on the market that has that feature, their UMC1820 is the only unit on the market with 8 instrument level inputs. BTW^2, in your other vid, where you mentioned the rubber feet -- that was the first thing I noticed, too. The Presonus came with those, but you had to stick them on, yourself. One fell off, and I had to replace all four. I really appreciate that Behringer thought to put those there. And they're recessed into the case so that they wouldn't get in the way of rack mounting the unit (gee, I wonder if there's a rack mount kit for this thing....).
Great vid, I have a technical question about the power supply for the device. I bought mine 2nd hand and it came without a power supply. I know that it requires 5V 1000ma power supply. I've found loads of those on eBay but I cannot find anywhere specifications for the Tip that the power supply would need to fit into the Behringer. (Usually measure in MM). So I don't know if it requires 3.5mm length, etc. I also don't know the diameter of the required PIN tip either. They come in varying diameter: eg 2.5mm, 1.7 etc The instruction manual of the Behringer404 gives no specifics. I've emailed Behringer a few weeks ago but I'm still in the customer queue apparently. I noticed in your review, yours came with the power supply. -would u be able to tell me any specifics about the power supply it uses so I can make the right choice? There is also some mention of the power supply being 'negative pin'. I don't know exactly what thT means. Does that mean the Behringer has an internal pin in its Jack? Or does it mean that the power supply needs to have a 'negative pin' in it? Thank you again for the useful review and for reading !
Hey mate thanks for the video great review. How would you rate the two preamps? I used to use M-audio Fast Track pro and am looking to upgrade. The Behringer seems to be great value for money and i could certainly use the extra inputs and outputs. I am just worried about the behringer pre amps. How much of a difference is it between the two? Only reason I had a preference for focus right is due to the preamps and the ho ha about them in the market. I am a guitar player and need 2 inputs for guitar and mic each and then use my looper as well so 4 in puts in total. Focus right might be a problem in this situation. If the preamps are comparable then the decision is very easy.
Sheharyar Mehmood I too was skeptical about purchasing the Behringer and almost got a focusrite because of all the ho ha. Honestly speaking the Midas preamps are amazing. The a to d converters are very smooth sounding and I'm very glad I went with the Behringer
I was just hopping to get a resolution from your point of view on which one is better for what, i will start to record some songs as a singer and i don't know which one buys
These 2 were similar in price at the time of this video. After using both, IMO, i think the Behringer comes with way more features and inputs but the Focusrite sounds slightly better/warmer because of if great AtoD converters that they are famous for. You can't go wrong.
@@TheCoachMusicOfficial thanks so much for your answer, i will go for the focusrite cuz the offer that i received it came with the cond mic and headphones, thanks again, cheers from Argentina.
Thanks for making this!! Im now deciding on getting one of the two. Im new to recording and I play metal guitar and was about to go with the Scarlet kit that has the mic too for $249 new but wondering if the Behringer and a mic seperatly would be better.. Btw I dont think the additional weight gives a point to Focusrite at all, for me atleast. Thanks again.
This was useful indeed..but I am just starting up a home studio so..I want to record more instruments so which one should I go for the 2i2 or brehinger ??
Hey great video by the way. Question, with the behringer, can you assign different mixes through the playback outputs? Reason I ask is because I run MainStage 3 for live shows and loops.
No offense man, but I’m kinda disappointed by the lack of depth to this video. Everyone can read the specs (if they can read I guess). I could figure out how many inputs and outputs each interface has on my own. That’s not really what’s going to decide the "battle" though. I’d be interested in knowing about two things you CAN’T take from a spec sheet. 1) Build quality and reliability and 2) Sound quality. A comparison of two sound samples would have been awesome. I don’t suppose you own either one? (If not, come on... don’t make a video about these things if you don’t even know them...)
@@honeste6652 And since he is using the first gen Scarlett to compare, it gets even worse, with that buggy mess of a software. I had a 1st gen Scarlett 6i6 and boy, was that the worst audio interface I ever had.
When it comes to EDM production here are both equal. Questions you should ask yourself: How many mic inputs do I need for instruments/keyboards/drum machines etc....? How many instruments/vocalist will you be recording simultaneously? Do you want more portability? After you've decided on these questions it becomes easier to make your choice
Unless you already have a MIDI interface, the Behringer has the huge advantage of included MIDI ports. EDM will most likely use hardware 5 pin MIDI at some point, the Behringer has that whereas the Focusrite does not. Another plus point in favour of the Behringer.
Hey man, just found your channel. Its been over a year this vid. Whats are you thoughts now about the behringer interface after using it for a year? Greets from the netherland
Sorry m8 but you are comparing bananas vs oranges, to be fair you should compare the Scarlett 4i4, I have the 4i4 and I was so disappointed due to plenty of issues when running its software in my computer, hence when using with Ableton for my production it was ok, I know, my bad luck, cuz, in general, it has been a good product according to other ppl. Now in 2020 I'm contemplating to buy the BEHRINGER UMC404HD U-PHORIA Interface de Audio/Midi USB, the price is almost the same as in 2017, very cheap, I don't mind to have an extra interface though.
Thanks for the input . This was one of my first tech reviews and so I know it needs a lot of polishing. I based my comparison on price point. At the time of this video the were very similar. The UMC404 treated me well. I'm now using a Komplete Audio 2 and Will release a review video soon. The UMC404 also kept its value relatively well. Sold it for $100
Thanks for listing the features, but what about how they perform? how do they sound? are they reliable?. I have been pleased with the Behringer over the past couple of years. Sounds good to me, but not likely to get much use in future as I now have the XR18 digital mixer and can simultaneously record 18 channels to my PC.
don't get it man too many drive problems get a behringer or focusrite you can't go wrong with either of them also if you have the money go for the 200 dollar audient or even the 300 dollar version also steinberg. also presonus
sorry man , i bought it three weeks ago 😐 , but hey i don't any problem , at first i couldn't register it because i was entering numbers wrongly but later i register it and get the driver , and still no problem , but i only used it for playback purposes not for recording
I'm loving the positivity and community here guys. I agree with Sudoku. At the end of the day the only thing that matters is the music that You create.
If you were to record vocals would the behringer or focusrite be a better choice? and what are the pros and cons in recording between those 2 interfaces?
I think that they are both equal when it comes to quality of your recording. The Behringer does come with more features BUT what will make the biggest difference in your recording "Quality / Clarity" will be your room acoustics and microphone.
TheCoachMusic ohhhhh, I see. I’ve been doing research on the behringer on its reviews, it’s specs and info on their home page and a lot of people’s opinions on it. I ended up buying the behringer and I feel it was the right choice and I felt the behringer is more detailed in terms of its audio interface plus its clarity was better than the focusrite in my opinion. Thank you for your response and video, it was very helpful!
Thank you for your kind words. I'm glad I was able to help.
F
4 years later there's me still debating
go to Steinberg or Behringer
The Focusrite does have signal led's . They are around the gain knobs as in picture. The signal is green when talking and turns red when it clips. Great Video!!
getTekt your are absolutely right my friend. thank you for the heads up
That's almost a relief to find out! I bought the UMC404HD, but I was surprised to hear the Focusrite didn't have clip lights.
@@EdMuse1122 They don't have.. separately, but the halo light around the knob will light from green to red.
You forgot one important thing! The 404 has an external power source option so you can use a balanced power supply to completely deaden any of that 60hz noise you may be getting from the USB power. ;) Good review though!
Very, very good point
WHAAAT??? IS THAT ELECTRICITY NOISE I AM GETTING, THE ONE that you mean, FROM THE USB PORT?????
THANKS!
88KeysMan this comments warns my heart. thank YOU for sharing. I'm glad I could help.
88KeysMan, great to know you use it live. I’d like to build similar setup with iPad connected through USB hub and Lighting/USB adapter. What do you think? Is it possible to go off-the-grid with UMC404HD? Can it work completely portable powered by USB powerbank?
In case someone was wondering, the pad is -20db.
What is pad?
@@moufuzz2759 a reduction of the signal. There's a pad button on the UMC404HD
@@AnnaVannieuwenhuyse ohhhhh ok thanks!
More of a spec comparison than a review.
my boy is watching his own video on the background
Coach you should have at least got a more fair model of Focusrite to compare. For this video should have been the scarlet 2i4. This comparison was not doing a favor for Focusrite or compare the 2i2 with the UMC202.
Exactly. Focusrite looses in regard to number of inputs. No, it does not. UMC202HD has only 2 Inputs too, as you stated correctly
wow so many people criticising this very useful and helpful comparison ( if not review).
MIKE GEE GUITARMAN maybe just a fuse to be changed.... Does it have any compartment for it in the back? Usually it's a little plastic screw. ..
It's also worth mentioning that the mono button on the 404 is part of the monitoring area and has no affect while recording through usb. If you plug into only channel 1, pressing the mono button will not add your audio to any other channel for recording.
The umc 404hd is very good and clean sound
Agreed
emmanuel frimpong is it true UMC404HD can work completely portable powered by USB powerbank?
This was one of my first reviews. Hopefully I will improve. Thanks for understanding
Hell Stallion spoken like a experienced veteran. I completely agree.
Thanks! You summed up the specs nicely and sold me on the Behringer. I was having a tough time deciding.
Glad I could help!
Comparing specs is cool and all but I was hoping you would have done a sound comparison as well. But overall a good video.
Thanks for the feedback. I will try and incorporate that in the next videos I do
You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned that its perfect for dj'ing. That's on of the reasons I bought it.
I am prob going to get the uphoria 1820 but i started with a scarlett solo studio bundle which I love but I have alot of behringer products and have had 0 problems knock on wood so I am glad to have come across this just to solidify my decision keep up the good work
Michael watkins Enjoy it and Thanks
correction. you can't DJ with the 2i2, it only has 1 stereo out.
Great job Coach loved it . Really helped me decided. Love the no drivers needed. Keep em coming
This guy deserves more subs, he seem's like someone who would have at least 10k subs or more. Good video, good channel, and a nice studio. Good work TheCoachMusic.
Thank you so much for this comment. I was beginning to get a little discouraged, but this comment came just in time.👍🏽👍🏽
i been using both, i like the focusright (the hd preamps) and scarlett do not sound like the higher line of preamps focusright, behringer sounds good ii a very good price, so i felt it has more headroom than other interfaces, on this case behringer works better to meee.
Samtab Galaxy This is exactly what I want to know as well, which has the best sound quality in ADC etc.
Well you want better sound go with the Apollo twin thunderbolt and you good!!
You get what you pay for
ive had the Behringer 404 for about a year now. I think for budget its the best audio interface.
Thanks coach I'm getting the behringer. My windows 7 computer only has usb 3.0 ports which are not working well with my m-audio fast track pro, I sure hope the behringer is good with the 3.0 ports. I'll let you know.
Frank Pratte please do. That info would be great to share with the community
Not sure about which one is better but I liked your video, pretty funny and interesting
Thank's man! I've been looking for an audio interface to use with garage band that has 4 live inputs. But could not find any good reviewers for the Behringer, and you come along with 2! Nice slick looking productions, impressed.
Richard Ashbee thank you my friend, for taking the time to leave such a positive feedback. I hope that I make more videos you enjoy.👍👍
Dude. Great review of the Behringer UMC404HD! Based upon your review I've decided to purchase one. Hope Behringer is compensating you because you do a great job! I noticed the M-Audio synth in the background. Do a review of that beast if you haven't already.
Was wondering if you had the same experience I did. UMC404 turned out to be complete garbage once I was trying to get competitive mixes and knew what I was doing.. lol
BEHRINGER UMC404 all the way for the win thumbs up[ shared thank you for this video
Thanks again for the review.
mikeaustin1 how is your UMC404HD. Do you like it?
coach why didn't you do a sound comparison ?
Tarun Daodat good question. Ive have used both and find the equal in there one way. But the simple answer is I don't own the Scarlett anymore and I didn't want to lie.
Ah man....I would love to have done a sound comparison . It's the 1 thing I regret not doing for this video. Reason 1 is that I don't physically own a focusrite so I went with a spec comparison instead. Reason 2 is that since 80% of a TH-cam is watched in mobile/tactile devices I didn't think you'd be able to hear the real difference... Still I should have done it. Oh well next time.👍
cant help but play devils advocate here.
people in the market for interfaces often watch their videos through monitors.
Bran Greene I felt the EXACT same way but since I gave them a shot, I have not regretted it
Informative and entertaining. Not easy to do! Good job.
Wouldn't call this a review. A review involves actually using the products and usually even giving samples of what the product produces. This is more a spec overview/comparison. On that note I plan on actually testing the interface with an at2020 mic, a guitar, and some aux input from game systems (mostly to capture 3ds audio when I record/stream it)
Well produced content though, I'm hoping to get there with my content at some point.
You're absolutely right. It's more of a comparison video. This was only my second video ever but I'm trying to improve. Thanks for the comment.

pretty cool style dude
Thank you
Since Behringer has so much option for plugs + has MIDAS pre... it's not actually a competition.
wise you are...👍🏽
A fair comparison would be to compare the 2i2 vs the UMC202HD. This doesn't make much sense.
Could you clarify the intention of the comparison?
I would say the reason is the price. As a matter of fact, UC404 is even cheaper. I might actually get 404.
You're good ! Very cool and funny video! I'm a fan! 👍🏻ans i'm very interested to buy the Behringer so : thanks for help me to make a choice! 😁 jean-marc from France
Merci, my friend thank you for the kind words. I hope you make beautiful music with it
base only on specs and price , the beringer wayyy ! better , but you don t have make the most important test , how dose it sound ,
I guess my question to it would be "where's the catch?".
Sorry to hear about the technical difficulty. I'm not quite sure how to handle that. Maybe some type and may help .
If you have a low sound open the mix volume + the main volume to increase. the umc 404hd is very good in condition and quality
Well done man!
Thank you!!!
The Behringer UMC202HD has red clip lights located just above the green normal input lights. It seems unlikely the 404 would come without them
Great video coach.
Tom Carozza thank you very much
The last part I'm almost on the floor with shorter name 😂😂😂
So your options are:
@@EdMuse1122 I feel like I've done
More googling in these last week than I have in my entire life.
@@EdMuse1122
I haven't figured out how to use my computers soundcard as the output device.
I'm about to change my audio device! Your video help me a lot! My Focusrite is damage, making some weird noises! So Thank so much!
Go to behniger uphoria hd 404..
Good video bro!
cool video!
Thank you for the kind words. Check out some other vids. I hope you enjoy
@@TheCoachMusicOfficial sure 👌🏻👍🏻
Great video!
One think that I am super confused about is that "Both are USB Powered". I don't think UMC404 is USB powered. I went on buying one and every where I looked, it said requires external power supply. Can some shed some light on it? Thanks!
Shailendra my current setup is has my MacBook Pro powering my UMC404HD.
Thank you so much for replying. I got 404HD, working great!!
What I would like to know is whether having the power supply in actually prioritises
using that source over the USB power.
If you would explain how to store/record/download MIDI signals from a MIDI Workstation to a MC or OC. Thanks!😊
thanks, but there is not justice for 404 comparing weights, it has 4 channels vs 2 channels of the 2i2. I was a minute to buy Scarlett but the 404 looks good.
My thoughts exactly!!!
I submit a win for focusrite.
the name length is the dealbreaker!! haha
great video! Thank you!
Jonan gtr Honestly, it was my pleasure. I hope I answered some of the questions you had.
Thanks!
Jeff
focuseite sound qality so much better..I use two sound card..focusrite won..404 have a power supply problem.
SS MUSIC STUDIO I haven't had any problems with mine but you are the 2nd person to tell me about a power supply issue. You are in a unique position to be able to test both in a side by side audible comparison.
sir.. I use both..
but 2i2 winer..
bt 404 are alsoo very cool in this budget...
Awesome video, i just buy the 404 HD bout 2 days ago..i think the "MIDAS" preamp are pretty good for cheap interface and amateur like me. Thank you
I'm sure with that interface and some practice you will be sounding like a PRO in no time.
They come in varying diameter: eg 2.5mm, 1.7 etc
The instruction manual of the Behringer404 gives no specifics.
The a to d converters are very smooth sounding and I'm very glad I went with the Behringer
awesome thanks for the quick response. Is there any specific monitors you would recommend as well? I am on a budget :D
I wouldn't have called that a review but rather a specification comparison. I'm still hunting down actual reviews. Thanks anyway.
I couldn't agree with more. You are absolutely right.
Please do a physical review.....if possible. Comparing features can be done from websites..... :)
2i2 can record 2 things at once. UMC404 can record 4 things at once. Personally I only record 1 instrument at a time. 2 at most.
should compare Focusrite-Scarlett-6i6-2nd-Gen-24-192KHZ-USB-Audio-Interface-USED-B2 to the behringer unc404
Hey great video by the way. Question, with the behringer, can you assign different mixes through the playback outputs? Reason I ask is because I run MainStage 3 for live shows and loops.
Unfortunately the second set of output playback is just another duplicate mix
No offense man, but I’m kinda disappointed by the lack of depth to this video. Everyone can read the specs (if they can read I guess). I could figure out how many inputs and outputs each interface has on my own. That’s not really what’s going to decide the "battle" though. I’d be interested in knowing about two things you CAN’T take from a spec sheet.
1) Build quality and reliability and
2) Sound quality.
A comparison of two sound samples would have been awesome. I don’t suppose you own either one? (If not, come on... don’t make a video about these things if you don’t even know them...)
Coach told us in a prior video that he owns the Behringer
@@tomcarozza412 Which is fine, but it's extremely clear he does NOT own the Focusrite. So there's no point in doing the comparison.
@@honeste6652 I owned both. I can assure you the UMC404 kicks the Scarletts ass all day, in every single point.
@@honeste6652 And since he is using the first gen Scarlett to compare, it gets even worse, with that buggy mess of a software. I had a 1st gen Scarlett 6i6 and boy, was that the worst audio interface I ever had.
You need to do your research and actually use both. The Focusrite does have LED Clip lights. Plus all you did was read out what's already on the web.
Man Focusrite just got bodied by Beringer!! Do I sense a changing of the guard here?!
That's the way I looks to me. But don't count them out yet...🥊🥊🏆
Both in the same prize range? Focusrite is 80$ per channel, Behringer is 40$ per channel.
Even if you compared it with the focusrite 2i4 which has midi i/o, the behringer would of still won
which is best for edm production?
When it comes to EDM production here are both equal. Questions you should ask yourself: How many mic inputs do I need for instruments/keyboards/drum machines etc....? How many instruments/vocalist will you be recording simultaneously? Do you want more portability? After you've decided on these questions it becomes easier to make your choice
@@TheCoachMusicOfficial tx dude 🙂
Unless you already have a MIDI interface, the Behringer has the huge advantage of included MIDI ports. EDM will most likely use hardware 5 pin MIDI at some point, the Behringer has that whereas the Focusrite does not. Another plus point in favour of the Behringer.
Lighter... Shorter name... OK, I'll go for the Scarlett!
Opa então a behringer seria melhor!?
Behringer wheres my people?
Excuse me. Dude, you should compare Behringer 2 ch vs Focusrite 2 ch. That would be fair.
Not price wise! Both £100 in UK
Sold it for $100
wah snang kja ko wat bidio camni... thank
Anda sangat disambut..👍🏽
Okay..then what do you prefer????
Focusrite Scarlett solo or the Behringer 202hd?
Living on Strings I purchased and regularly use The Behringer UMC404hd and I am very satisfied with my choice.
Nice video
Thank you very much
There is NO comparison here!!!!
Bro i have a Behringer U-Phoria UMC404HD Audiophile 4x4 audio interface.
Is that good for my home recording unit?
Thanks for listing the features, but what about how they perform? how do they sound? are they reliable?. I have been pleased with the Behringer over the past couple of years. Sounds good to me, but not likely to get much use in future as I now have the XR18 digital mixer and can simultaneously record 18 channels to my PC.
Scarlett 2i2 vs Behringer Umc 202 HD ... how the better?!
The 404 is in the pricerange of the focusrite 202
great 😀 , how about m-track 2x2 ?
don't get it man too many drive problems get a behringer or focusrite you can't go wrong with either of them also if you have the money go for the 200 dollar audient or even the 300 dollar version also steinberg. also presonus
sorry man , i bought it three weeks ago 😐 , but hey i don't any problem , at first i couldn't register it because i was entering numbers wrongly but later i register it and get the driver , and still no problem , but i only used it for playback purposes not for recording
hey man music is music as long as it works it doesn't matter i guess.
Does the behringer u-phoria umc404hd work with Breakaway Broadcast Processor or stereo tool
