- Hey everyone!
Last week's trade deadline was one of the wildest we've seen in years. The New York Yankees traded for two left handed sluggers: Anthony Rizzo and Joey Gallo. While these two guys have their similarties, they also have vast differences. They both get on base a lot, but Gallo strikes out much more than Rizzo. To sum up Gallo's playstyle, he personifies the three true outcome era of baseball. However, is this good for baseball?

To me the problem is that the “middle ground” between TTO and Traditional baseball is the absolute best players in the sport Soto, Trout, Tatis, Acuna etc. They are outliers and require immense talent.
I think the most in-between guy right now is ohtani. His average isn't great but he tries to unload everytime, but still can place a ball. To me Trout, Tatis, and VladJR are just too complete to be compared.
That’s not a middle ground...it’s a fusion of the best of all worlds. A middle ground would be Gallo adjusting his approach to trade some walks/HR’s for singles/doubles.
@@33moneyball .....thats what ohtani does he's just been better at hitting HRs this year than Gallo. I think Ohtani would have more HR than he has if he had an approach like Gallos, but he swings more than Gallo and he hits more line drives than Gallo. But I think that may just be the way I see it compared to you.
The true great ones are good in both traditional stats and analytical stats

I hate Stanton. Biggest bust in NYY history. He needs to be GONZO. Gallo, at least as a lefty, will have much greater success in Yankee Stadium, unless he cant handle NY like Clint Frazier, Randy Johnson, and so many others. Imagine tho how great the Yankees would be if Stanton, Judge, Gallo, etc would hit like a real baseball player and not just swinging for the fences every at bat and failing 80% of the time. So tired of screaming at my TV because Stanton and Judge suck at hitting. The Yankees need to rebuild around Gallo, Rizzo, Odor, and Greg Allen.

idk walking is pretty cool, something about holding back a swing if it's a few inches off the plate is impressive
It's really fun watching pitchers try to navigate a line-up with 4 HR Derby contestants. That pitch count can go up real quick
Walking fatigues the Pitcher and defense so much more too. Youre usually working at least 6 pitches with a walk.
Once someone figures out how to win with contact hitting and stealing, the pendulum will swing back. The only winning team to do that recently was the Royals in 2014-15 and that was because of their absurd success in contcat hitting and a dominant pen.

@@KingcoleIIV The solution to the shift is being able to hit the ball the other way with consistency. Some people assume that when people tell pull hitters to hit it the other way we don't want them to try to hit home runs. That's not it... we love seeing them hit home runs, or pulling the ball so hard that it gets through the infield, but they need to develop to mindsets- mashing and slapping. If there is no shift on, mash away. If there is a shift on take the free base. I mean, think of a Boggs or Gwynn or Suzuki... now imagine a team putting a hard shift on them... they would have batted .600. You just have to look at the defense. If they are shifting you, take the free single. If they aren't, hit like normal. As long as you show them you can beat the shift consistently they won't be able to put on an extreme shift.
Home run ball, I suspect the bigger answer is deadening the ball a bit. Right now virtually everyone is able to hit it out. Take some of the juice out of it or move the outfield walls back a bit and when it becomes harder to actually leave the yard you change the math on whether trying is good baseball.
They've talked about moving the mound back. I think it would make more sense to deaden the ball but at the same time lower the stitching so they break a little less... although I guess that doesn't solve the problem with guys throwing 100... maybe they need to lower the mound again.
@@nacoran okay but less homeruns = less interest and fans of the sport. I love watching 9 inning pitchers duel but most people are not like me and like offense. One of the reasons they banned sticky substances is that it was cutting down on offense across the league. If only contact hitting was happening then baseball would die

I was worried this would be like an Italk hitpiece on Gallo, but you did good, I am in Texas and we loved him, he gets on base ALOT, he is a diamond fielder and hits HR. He is a steal for NYY and yesterday he hit 2 doubles and a HR, GO JOEY
I wouldn't call a career .335 OBP "A LOT" lmao. Lifetime .210 hitter. He's a horrid hitter.... absolute garbage hitter. I will say this though..... he's still pretty young and has the potential to improve. But if he insists on trying to hit 40+ HR every year, he's going to continue hitting below .250.

@@billyfraiser6298 He has a .379 OBP this year, .859 OPS. He has a career OPS+ of 116, which is well above average. Looking only at batting average and calling someone a garbage hitter shows a pretty bad and outdated understanding of baseball. Gallo is an objectively a good hitter.

Homeruns are awesome but I love watching a team who can hit for contacts just smother a team with back to back hits.
Fans of teams who strike out a lot know they are way more fun to watch when they have those days where they're scoring a lot thanks to base hits and doubles and not just one home run after like 8 straight strikeouts with men on base, it's frustrating.

I'm curious to see how Nick Madrigal will factor in here, as he is the opposite of Joey Gallo as a hitter in almost every way, and his career batting average is over .300 so far.
What is his ops? Walks? Does he hit into double plays? There are so many stats that tell a story of a ball player not just BA

If you're willing to take walks+home runs in lieu of strikeouts. I'll take the avg and babpip in lieu of less walks. Can't have it both ways.

I had to explain modern baseball to my 50 year old dad and I used Joey Gallo, Brandon Lowe, Jack Cust and Aaron Judge as examples of the modern hitter.

Hot Take incoming: Aaron Judge would bat over .300 if the pitchers weren’t using sticky stuff since the start of the season. Aaron Judges batting average is about .280 right now
If you get on base 37% of the time and hit for extra bases and home runs at this rate you have the same value as someone that hits .320 but doesnt hit for extra bases

Also many people consider Japan as AAAA, almost MLB level, not mentioning Japanese teams had played competitive level with MLB many times on recent past, including winning 5 times over a MLB team with Acuña and Soto on it
@@superninja252 There's a reason there aren't more Japanese players in MLB, and there's a reason that most of them aren't particularly remarkable. The NPB being AAAA is also pretty ficticious, it's probably closer to AA. The Japanese team was missing a few of their best players, Team USA was missing literally all of their best players. And just about any professional team can win one baseball game, there's a reason why they play 162 games in the regular season and have playoff series, rather than single elimination games, baseball is a fairly high variance sport with a considerable luck/randomness factor.

I despise watching TTO baseball, particularly with the current pace of play. It makes me sad to see the game become less and less engaging. I've gone from watching it on TV and going to games to now just watching highlights and looking at box scores.

Hitters found out the real money was in long hits and home runs. It stopped becoming a thinking game at the plate and guy just swung for the fence every hit.
That has carried all the way until the recent years where hitters are tanking thier averages trying to hit home runs.
Utility short stops, first base rotators, back up catchers, etc. All trying to hit 30 home runs a year instead of hitting for average. People can say what they want about the game, but small ball and batters averaging .275+ will always be a better asset than your 1 guy hitting 30 home runs a year with 200+ strike outs.
Home runs don't make you a good hitter, getting to the ball 3/10 times does. It is literally the only stat that matters
I did a data science project this semester on increasing TTO rates and decreasing fan attendance (before COVID). I didn't find a mathematical correlation, but it is still interesting to see these trends are existing together.

You need to talk about how the market effects gameplay. If .330 average guys were getting paid, you’d see BA skyrocket, if K/9 weren’t the most important metric in getting paid max value, you’d see a lot less walks. It’s not advanced stats, it’s about trying to maximize how much money you can make.
Because of how effective pitchers are there is no real point in going for base hits, chances are you are getting left on unless somebody gets a homer. Thats why Gallo is important, he might not get many hits, but when he does it actually matters(scores runs)
Exactly. I was saying I wasn't worried about his strike outs because he would win some games for us...and then he hit that HR a couple hours later.
Pitchers aren't that effective. Look at the stats from the 80s and 90s...pitchers were way more efficient. They also pitched far more innings than they do today.

Good balanced approach. You are absolutely right, efficiency can be boring. It's why no body who wants a fun car buys an Accord or Civic. Even though they demonstrably better cars and more efficient than an Alpha Romero. It's a tension. Because yes, people want to see their teams win. But if the games are all 5-3, with 15Ks on both sides, no steals and lots of walks, the fans follow you in the box score, not on teli or in person. But it's going to be hard to move efficiency towards entertainment.
What about limiting throw overs to 1st? Might get steals back. That's something. Limiting defender movement from play to play. That would get more hits back (yes, I hate the shift even though it's the right move). But launch angle and exit velocity won't be going away, not unless bats changes again or they squish the ball.
One of the reasons traditional fans hate 3 true is it makes it hard to compare across genetations on raw numbers. Nolan Ryan struck out over 5k, but most of those in an era where teams rarely kept a Dave Kingman type. Were he or Koulfax pitching today they'd be getting 300ks even in 220in and each have more no hitters. But fans have already had to accept this reality with wins, and with the .400 club due to rise of relievers. Difference was those changes didn't impact enjoyment of the game. This slogfest, is honestly just not that fun to watch anymore.
Everyone always thinks that these changes are going to accelerate as time goes on, but it's a search for efficiency, not necessarily TTOs. Eventually, the efficient balance will be struck, and the TTO rate will hang in equilibrium. I think around 40-45 percent, as hitting the ball into play will always have value for scrambling defenses and cleaning up base runners who get walked or take a more contact heavy approach at the plate.

The only thing Baseball needs to do is GET RID OF THE SHIFT....make it illegal for infielders go past 2nd base on either side and cant start on the Grass.......alot more hits would be singles getting more runners on base and more movement on the bases...
@GayJew the shift whenever Gallo bats is way too extreme. Obviously you should be able to shift a little bit but not as much as teams do against big power hitters.

If you look at the most recent champions (excluding 2020 because of the shortened season) since 2011 the team that won the World Series has ranked outside the top 6 for batting average in all of baseball twice being the 2016 Cubs (14th) and the 2014 Giants (10th) that’s why I believe batting average is what makes an offense successful in players like Gallo will put butts in the seats but when everything is on the line they do what they do best and that’s strikeout.

Imo there is room for every type of batter in my opinion, while it sucks that batting average is down, but as we have seen before baseball always evolves and changes we have seen that. To me if everyone were all the same Hitter it would be boring.
That’s pretty much what the league is heading towards. I’ve seen batters in the bottom of the 9th - with a runner on 3rd and less than two outs in a tie game - almost falling down swinging out of their shoes and striking out rather than just putting bat on ball and driving in the winning run.
The current MLB product of batters is disgustingly boring and unintelligent really. It’s so hard to watch.

The thing is it's not more efficient, because when all you need is one run to win the game and you have a runner on 2nd, it's a lot easier to move the runner over with sac outs or to send the ball to the outfield grass then to succeed in swinging for fences. This is also a situation that you will find yourself in more often than you'd think, there aren't even 10 combined runs scored in the average major league game. The reality is it's more efficient (or should I say more reliable) to try to knock runners in when they're in scoring position with small ball than with home runs. And even if you want to argue that swinging for the fences in a 162 game regular season is more effective (which I'd argue against, as I mentioned the majority of major league game are swayed in a big way with 1 run, and that's even early on in the game in low leverage situations) it also takes pressure off your team to have to hit bombs or be screwed) , come playoff time when it's a crapshoot and you can't guarantee you'll be hot, then you are screwed. So I have an argument for the regular season but in the playoffs it's just foolish to think 3 true outcome ball is more valuable or effective than small ball. I'll take 9 prime dj lemahieu's over 9 joey gallo's at the plate.
Also, what all the analytics nerds don't account for is that a computer can only generate answers through well articulated queries through human thought processes, which is again human reliant. Sometimes I feel like it's just about people wanting to be right than it is about the more effective way. ultimately analytics is only a tool to achieve the same goal you always had, and that's winning.

How about redesigning the ball to be more dead and harder for the pitcher to spin? The result will be returning to a better balance between pitchers and hitters and producing more balls in play. I think that under those conditions the shift will become less prevalent and there will be more balls in play.

No matter how productive a TTO hitter is, they are definitely less entertaining and more frustrating to watch. Like for example yeah Stanton is statistically successful as a Yankee but sometimes it's almost like he would swing at a pitch at his head (oh wait, that did happen and he fell over doing it)
I'd rather watch a guy hit 30 home runs and 30 doubles that the guy that hits 40 and strikes out. Get on base, let the guy behind you do his job. Keep the line moving. If a modern team hit for average, I think they'd be unstoppable. 8 guys constantly getting on base, moving the line, scoring the guy in front of them versus a team where maybe 1 or 2 guys hit home runs? I'd take small ball any day.

That’s not much of a compliment. Modern baseball is insanely boring. Imagine a sport where guys steal 100 plus bases, others hit 40 and 50 plus home runs, others hit .370, all while pitchers still rack up 300 plus strikeouts and sub 2.00 ERAs.
We had all that during the steroid era. For baseball to go from that level of excitement to this bore fest we have now… really hurts for the people who grew up watching the game in that era.
I know way too many former big baseball fans (myself included) who can’t even watch 3 innings of the current product. It’s terrible.

If a MLB team puts the ball in play, never whiffing or walking or going yard then it will average 3-3.5 runs per 27 outs used. The league average of RC/27 for HR and BB against 27 K’s is TWICE that.

3 true outcome players only work with a supporting cast of high average hitters, when more players start hitting home runs over 2 singles your going to see players with 40 home runs and 40 RBIs with a better supporting cast you are going to score way more.

He hit the nail on the head. The problem with three true outcomes baseball (beside the fact that the name itself implies something about balls in play which is patently untrue: that whether or not a ball put in play becomes a ground out or a double is a matter or pure chance. Anyone who has watched baseball for more than 5 minutes understands why that isn't true)is that it is boring to watch. This isn't quite so obvious when you are at home watching season 3 of Brooklyn Nine Nine on your TV with the game on your ipad, half paying attention until Paul Goldschmidt comes up. When you plunk down $45 or more for tickets, $20 to park, $25 for food and so on, there has to be more excitement in a 3 hour game than maybe 2 homeruns. When a man comes to the plate with runners on second and third with one out, the entire AB is excitement, not just the 4 seconds it takes a random swing to leave the yard. Threat to steal on first base creates instant excitement. Bunt situations, same. Unless rules limiting shifting are implemented, its hard to argue that the three true outcome approach isn't the smartest approach a hitter can take. Its just not all that interesting to watch. As long as trends hold, I wouldn't be surprised if you start to see attendance figures take a pretty big dip, even as TV ratings mostly hold.

If Gallo learned to hit to the opposite field he'd be far more valuable as he'd be on base far more allowing his team more chances to drive in more runs instead of pulling the ball into the shift. He's definitely got the strength to hit it out to left. You can't deny his glove and arm in the outfield. It's a shame he's on the Yankees though...
For me the problem isn't TTO baseball itself but that EVERYONE does it (although not to the extreme that Gallo does). I want baseball to support both the Gallos and the Madrigals and everyone in between. If someone finds out that TTO baseball isn't as efficient or the game changes in some significant way (i.e. bringing the fences back) it will come back, but I dont think that's what is really needed. Oh, and casual fans dont give a shit about this kind of stuff, the real problem is the marketing NOT the game.
Other than the last inning of the last World Series I have not watched a game in 2 years. The only reason I even watched that was because my roommate was a Dodger far. I just found out the Cubs got rid of Rizzo and Bryant and Sherzer (however you spell it) left DC. I love baseball but have lost all interest in Major League Baseball.
The "extremes of Modern Baseball" is the fact that someone will makeup a new statistic to make someone look as good or as bad as they want.
That’s just not true. A majority of the players leading those statistics are some of the best players in the league.
If a stat was “made up” to make a player look good that actually isn’t, then the other players leading that stat list wouldn’t be impressive, thus making the stat irrelevant.
@@benballier9580 well this goes to show that you can't use stats for everything. gallo did not pass the eye test at all as a ranger. striking out with runners on CONSTANTLY, and the a majority of his homeruns were solo shots. the rangers would have been better off with an average hitter and that is no joke.

This is why we shouldn't base everything on advanced metrics. You use baseline metrics that we've always used (AVG, OBP, HR, and RBIs) along with advanced metrics (exit velo, batted balls, etc.) to really grasp a players true skill/potential. Because to me, Joey Gallo is seriously not a good hitter. Nothing he does at the plate impresses me at all. Hes a good fielder with a bat that can do some damage every half moon. But thats about it.

Homers are great. And hitting 40+ homers is really cool. But, for a player like Gallo, that essentially means a homer every ~4 games. It's watching him the other ~3 games that, to me, becomes a little bit of a chore and entertainment issue. How many times can you watch a player strikeout or walk and continue to be engaged? For the record, I don't have a strong opinion about TTO nor the 'old days'. I'll still watch it regardless, especially the playoffs and now that the Pads are good.
