If you wanted Social Security benefits, you should have chosen a job in the private sector, not as a public servant. Public servants often receive pensions instead of Social Security, and those pensions are funded by taxpayers-including yourself. Now, asking for Social Security on top of your pension is essentially asking taxpayers to pay you twice.
If you want Social Security benefits, then your pension should be taxed in a way that offsets the payout, ensuring the net amount is comparable to what private-sector retirees receive. Otherwise, it’s nothing more than double-dipping-taking more from the same system that funded your career in the first place. It’s not fairness; it’s greed.

@@Bbenton1959 Did we watch the same video? The bill addressed the Government Pension Offset. Whereas government employees were previously not receiving all they paid in to SS due to the fact they have government pensions. I can't say if "most" did not pay into it. I didn't think not paying into SS was an option. I will be looking into that for my own awareness. However, what I said was more of an opinion than anything. I said simply that IF a person pays into SS, I believe they should get what they paid in. I really don't see how you can argue with that since it is my opinion. And yes I know that you get it if you paid into it. Thanks for stating the obvious.
After you said what you said, I decided to see for myself if "most" do not pay into SS.
According to the SS website: Social Security is designed to provide a base of retirement income, to be supplemented in part by employer-sponsored retirement plans. However, approximately one-quarter of state and local government employees are not covered by Social Security, which federal law allows if their employer-provided plans provide comparable benefits. Yet many public pensions are less generous for recent hires, raising questions of whether those plans will still provide Social Security-equivalent benefits. Using plan actuarial reports, public-use survey data, and Social Security administrative files, we examine 66 plans and project that a significant minority of them are likely to fall short of providing Social Security-equivalent benefits, most often affecting workers who accrue medium-length tenures in state or local government early in their careers. In all, 750,000 to 1 million noncovered workers annually might be at risk of receiving pension benefits that fall short of Social Security benefit levels.
One-quarter is hardly "most". Not trying to be argumentative but it felt like you were so ...

Here's an example. A person works for 20 years and pays into SS. They then change careers and become a teacher in Texas. While teaching, they pay into the Teacher Retirement System of Texas instead of SS. When they retire from teaching, they receive a pension based on their salary and years of service. The Windfall Elimination Provision was a law that reduced SS benefits drastically when a person also received a "government" pension. Teachers, firefighters, police officers and government employees were all affected and did not receive full SS benefits, even though they had paid FICA taxes for the years that they worked in the public sector. The WEP and a similar law, the Government Pension Offset were removed with the passage of the Social Security Fairness Act.

@@joracer1When this went into effect in Texas in the early 80’s, districts had the choice of participating in SS or opting out. The whole thing was very poorly explained and new teachers were rarely if ever informed about it. Combine that with the workload and extra responsibilities demanded of teachers and it’s not hard to see why many didn’t fully plan for the massive blow to their retirement. I waited until this year at 70 to start drawing my SS in order to have the highest amount I was allowed. My SS benefits were still reduced and I was not allowed to claim any part of my late husband’s benefits either. I may not see a big jump in my SS check, but everything helps. Meanwhile, most politicians who have been around as long as I taught are getting multiple pension payments - like one former governor who held positions in state government, as governor, as a cabinet member under Trump, and probably some others I’m not aware of. Sounds reasonable that they’ve denied public servants who have a pension fund the ability to claim full SS benefits because they consider it “double-dipping” right?
