“Maybe this won’t be as slow as most post rock I’ve heard!”
This band primarily consists of members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. 💀

A Silver Mt. Zion is amazing, they're one of my favourite bands of all time. Very glad to finally see them on any reaction channel, and one of my favourite songs of theirs!
You talked about folk, but there's also a strong punk spirit present here (one of their first albums has, in fact, the phrase "this is our punk rock" in it's name). Creative expression without care for technical skill is one of punk's core ideas.
You are also exactly spot on when you describe their music as having a sort of "uncontrollable weeping" quality. This sensation is so physical to me, I cannot listen to their music whithout literally uncontrollably weeping :) There's something so powerful about it.
I really hope you check out more of their stuff. "BlindBlindBlind" is probably my absolute favourite track by them, and a great example one when they actually resolve the usual melancholy and dread on a spectacularly positive note.

cool to see Silver Mt Zion featured on the channel! I like how they sound amateurish and sophisticated at the same time. Also the more unsettling the better haha

This is the only vocalist for me whose voice does not create a feeling of commerce and soullessness. His manner of singing or unprofessionalism (as anyone likes) is just the basis of the atmosphere of most of the works. It is easy to associate with him. His texts are as close as possible to ordinary people, as is his voice. After the first time I learned about this group, then everything else simply ceased to bring pleasure. Thank you for letting other people know about them.

Sigur Ros is also Post-rock with vocals

Their are some of the best when it comes to dynamics, in live you can have these almost silent moments when you can hear someone coughing and go back up to high intensity very gracefully. It also goes with the "punk" singing where they sing out as loud as they can (while typically people try to be more controlled).

Slint falls into the category of unusual post rock with vocals. From what I can tell you've already listened to good morning captain but that whole album spiderland is a masterpiece imo. You could try listening to breadcrumb trail or nosferatu man for some brilliant pioneering music for a lot of genres

Love your analysis of this track! Really liked your lyrical analysis for it as well. it's definitely not a happy song but god it's so beautiful, the canon at the end gives me goosebumps every time.

Sigur Ros is post rock with vocals, but not with understandable lyrics so there's a difference.

Isn't it about time for Godspeed to take a break and have a resurrection of SMZ? Efrim et al, we are waiting for the return of SMZ in Atlanta. BTW, I saw Godspeed's terrific concert at The Variety Playhouse last November (2022) in Atlanta

i found that track weirdly compelling, like within each section the iterations of the loop were grabbing me, the momentum forcing me forward. Maybe it's the hauntedness and darkness you point out. Neat!

I would be interested in your reaction to an Irish folk band Lankum and their song either Hunting The Wren, or Wild Rover.

It would be appropriate if your theme was unusual folk music.

I loved everything about this except the vocals. I've always had a distaste for those particular kind of whiny pop-punk vocals, and I keep thinking they'll go out of fashion and we'll look back on them as one of those "what were we thinking?" things like we do with bad fashion. That out of the way, I really enjoyed the music and how it builds up emotively, and I dig your comparison of it to folk rock. The opening march almost makes me think of classical compositions like Ravel's Bolero and Shotakovich's 7th Symphony that builds tension and dynamically upon a march rhythm and repeated themes, though this isn't nearly as complex of course (in the tradition of folk and post-rock).

The point is the vocals. The point of SMZ is to sing....

If not best, then at least different from what was on the channel before AND the most iconic and influential. It's a crime at this point to not know that the car is on fire and there's no driver at the wheel 💀🏴🧦
