Hey! This is the live version. From the record "061502", which coincidentally is the date of their last show. Interesting choice. The original is from their 1999 release, "We Are the Romans" and is obviously a lot... Cleaner.
Fun fact, I was at this show!!!! That may have been me screaming in the crowd! Botch is kind of a big deal in the hardcore scene in the northwest. The boys hail from Tacoma, Wa, and played frequently in Portland, Or, my neck of the woods. Keep in mind they started in the EARLY 90's. There was NOTHING like them being produced at the time. They were so far ahead of their time. That's why they did so well. It was a bummer when Botch broke up, we loved them so much in the Northwest. I probably would have recommended something from "The Anthology of Dead Ends" EP like "Japam" or "Afghamistam" but this is a fine choice. You should take a listen to the band "Minus the Bear" now. Dave Knudson, the guitarist for Botch started MTB after Botch. What's cool is that MTB is an indie band and sounds NOTHING like Botch but you can still totally here Knudson's playing style in both bands.

I've seen Minus the Bear mentioned a few times so I guess they'll be coming up soon. I can't say I'm eager to dive back into Mathcore but I'll always give it a fair shot with an open mind.

@@CriticalReactions But that's just the thing. MtB is NOT Mathcore. They're INDIE! No screaming, all singing, toned down guitars the whole bit! The bands couldn't be any different! But Dave Knudson's guitar style comes through in such interesting ways! So now that you heard Dave in a heavy, harsh setting I'd love for to hear him in an Indie setting it's an awesome way to experience a musician. In two VERY different bands. For MtB I highly recommend the song "Absinthe Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse".

Long time listener first time TH-cam commenter (ever) I second everything this person said, please check out the “anthology of dead ends” ep it’s their final effort and about as long as a Yes song (good review btw) or “We are the Romans” and I think 99% of BOTCH fans would be stoked. Have a good day 👍

Man. Thank you for doing this. Seen these guys more times than I can count. Most reaction analysis channels are sleeping on Botch. One of the best DIY bands ever. Thank God For Worker Bees, really anything off American Nervoso or We Are The Romans is gold.
(Never been a huge fan of this particular live recording, but better than nothing).

Very interesting track. I think I was more constantly fascinated by the combination of the dissonant sounds and the rhythmic complexity, yet I'm not sure it ever came together into a really coherent song. This is one of those where I feel a conflict between my analytical "left-brain" that appreciates this kind of mathematical complexity, and my emotional "right-brain" that wants some melody, hook, or groove to latch onto. Still fascinating, and I could see myself checking them out when I'm in a very specific mood.

You should definitely check out the studio version of this song, it's a lot cleaner than the live version that was reacted to here and feels more like a coherent song

Haha I recommended him to listen to MTB too! Fellow NW'er here! Portland. Botch was amazing and way ahead of their time. I honestly love both the bands and it's awesome to hear Knudson's style shine in both. You can listen and tell it's the same guitarist.

I bet someone else has mentioned this, but just in case... Botch included the guitarist of Minus the Bear and the bassist of Russian Circles. This was a kinda weird song to introduce someone to Botch with imo. If you feel like revisiting them, you should check out "C. Thomas Howell as the 'Soul Man'," "Frequency Ass Bandit," and/or "Afghamistam"

20 years later and they released 1 new song saying #noreunion #onesongonly, would be a great react. Check out "One Twenty Two".
I saw them at the show before this recording and jeeez it was insane, to date I've never seen such a great performance.
I love that they helped shape a generation of hardcore/mathcore/metalcore to follow but its also a shame they quit only after 9 years.
Greatful we got Minus the Bear, and These Arms are Snakes, and Russian Circles out of them though.

"I have no idea what these guys are doing" 🤣 Neither do I but I like it. There is something about mathcore/math metal that I really enjoy. I listened to the entire playlist while playing a video game and it was just fun.
Also, I think it is interesting that you thought of Westworld. I watched it when it came out and then BTBAMs Automata 1&2 came out and I swore they might have been influenced by Westworld when I dug into the lyrics. 🤔

It's always a strange feeling when you just happen to run into two different works of art in quick succession where you can make so many connections, allowing two works grow you appreciation for both of them despite the fact that the creation process of each might have had nothing to do with the other.

    • @janeg6759
      @janeg6759 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@CriticalReactions Yes. I agree and I wonder if something subliminal was going on if not intentional. If you haven't listened to all of Automata 1 and 2, I wonder if you would see the same connection I made. I never mentioned it to anyone else or if I did, they hadn't seen Westworld. I personally enjoyed the series a lot.

Drummer Tim Latona recorded much of the Botch reunion tour on his channel. th-cam.com/video/xkomurgWrKU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ooRs-6pA4bpp72yn. This was the only band he was in. He’s an unsung hero for this genre that doesn’t get nearly enough credit.

Otherwise good video, Botch rules (and Dillinger of course) and I'm stoked to check out the other mathcore reactions you do this week. Lately I've been a lot more drawn towards the more experimental, dissonant, noisy chaotic stuff like mathcore, avantgarde tech death/black metal, IDM electronic and more good weird like that.
