Thank you Kurt Cobain who bought a tape for 5 dollars at K records and discovered this awesome band and again turned my head their way back in the 90's.
Wow! My very first concert was seeing these lovely ladies open for Nirvana in oklahoma city in '94. I was a freshman in high school and almost died in the pit that night.....great memories!
@Pearlholics Anonymous everyone liked them....they played a few cover songs that went over really well, but I don't recall exactly what they were. I know I enjoyed them.
I remember being a mopey teen, taking myself way too seriously, and liking dark "cool" music. Imagine my surprise when, like many of you, I picked up a Shonen Knife CD at the recommendation of Kurt Cobain. I took the CD home, played it and was like "What on Earth?!" I couldn't wipe the smile of my face!
Thank you for admitting to getting into dark music simply because it is considered cool. I have no doubt my mind a lot of people listen to dark music for the same reason, but would sooner slit their own throats than admit it.
Dude, its like the jesus and mary chain...gotta have the beach boys melody to offset the dissonant noise musically. Nothing wrong with having bright and shiny and pop, as long as it's done honestly. The Ramones had a ton of it, especially during the Phil Spector recordings...as did a number of other bands....dead boys and stiv bators had the garage thing going on. You look at Jay Reatard and there's a ton of pop sensibilities as well. The Velvets and Lou..etc. It's the hardest thing to do, it's easy to be mopey and dark as you put it, but shit dude, throw on some pop sensibilities and it is incredibly hard. Cool interview with Kim Deal of the Breeders where she says she thought they would throw a band together and score a dance number right off the bat, and nothing came. Pixies did the loud soft dynamic extremely well as well, even though I'm more partial to the jesus and mary chain. Happy to read your comment dude, cheers.
I love Shonen Knife so much and have for over 25 years. I'm so happy I got to see them once at a tiny club in Baton Rouge, LA with only about 10 people in the crowd. It was amazing. Their sound is so full for a 3-piece and it's pure rock-and-roll at it's finest.
@Pearlholics Anonymous they did a Ramones tribute album in 2011, and were lovingly given the name Osaka Ramones by the band themselves during their retirement tour.
I love you Shonen Knife.
Discovered this great band today - joyous, uplifting and totally life affirming. Catchy songs and very tight, competent, musicians. 60 year old Scotsman!
Many decades ago I bought a Shonen Knife cd on a friend’s advice, and kept playing it steadily over the years. It is wonderful to see the band is still obviously thriving.
Banana Chips is freaking amazing! As are all s Shonen Knife songs. Twist Barbie? All classic punk pop. I love this band so much. They rock in ageless splendour.
In 1994 I saw the best gig ever - it was Shonen Knife! Prior to this I’d seen 100’s of amazing gigs. Roll on 2018 they were touring near to me. I was hesitant as I didn’t want to blow my amazing memories away. I went. It’s now the 2nd best gig ever! I didn’t need Kurt to tell me anything - the fist and second time told me all I needed to know
Been a fan since the early 1990s and have seen them live twice in Seattle. Wonderful! I have never seen a band so happy to be performing! They seem to be absolutely enjoying performing for their fans, and who could ask for more?!
The first song reminded me of a softer MUFFS, The only song I remember from them back in the day was called Big Mushroom. I never actually listen to these guy's but I've known about them since back in the day.
Every guitar and drums are the TOP custom and very special and top quality, you can just tell,I dont recognize any but I bet they are,all made by top Japanese builders
Recent Guardian newspaper article brought me here. Ramen Rock's so fun....great performance! Look forward to collecting the albums. Is that a Daisey Rock guitar? Such great tone and fun drummer!
Da heck! In 37 years of existence I'd never heard this band before now, and I came here cuz of Nirvana. Was this just popular in Japan and USA? Read the comments and they seemed to be very popular, but certainly not in Latin America at all.
They were not a big deal in U.S. I’m just finding out about them because I looked into the Linda Linda Lindas and someone said they’re similar to Shonen Knife
So good!! What a blast from the past for me! I remember their hit from Cartoon Networks Powerpuff girls. I was in HS. Next to them I got really into Potshot. Good stuff!!
Thank you Kurt Cobain who bought a tape for 5 dollars at K records and discovered this awesome band and again turned my head their way back in the 90's.
Buen dato.

@@remyyy3497 i mean he is mostly a nirvana cover channel
Naoko and I are the same age. We both heard the Ramones and it changed our lives. Her in Osaka, me in rural Kentucky. Interesting stuff.

Let me guess - Spanish Moon?
This is like punk’s more wholesome sister.
Power Pop?
Punk POP is what they bill themselves as, although, they have been dabbling in metal the last couple of albums
@Pearlholics Anonymous they did a Ramones tribute album in 2011, and were lovingly given the name Osaka Ramones by the band themselves during their retirement tour.
U r a poser
@@shoknifeman2mikado135 not to be confused with pop punk lol
They say that punk is limited, this band proves that you can create so much with punk
Love them! Got into them as a kid when they did the PowerPuff Girls song. Seeing them in Fresno tonight for the first time! 😁
They came to Fresno? Damn I sure missed out.
Cool they did the power puff theme?
I never tire of listening to them

So happy to have just discovered these. Can’t believe I missed them! I’m in love 😍
This is so surreal what a lucky thing to get them here on Audiotree
Breathtaking... I just saw them on a picture together with Nirvana ( I am a really fan of Nirvana ) and they sound amazing !!
really solid drumming
well, it's punk hahahaha
and kazooing
Ironically, the creator of the drum riffs on many songs, is that gal playing bass, who was the original drummer.
Masterful kazooing. Atsuko studied kazoo at Juliard, I think.
@@shoknifeman2mikado135 she also made all the outfits
Banana Chips is freaking amazing! As are all s Shonen Knife songs. Twist Barbie? All classic punk pop. I love this band so much. They rock in ageless splendour.
this band is my new obsession
same i feel so late but they are dope
La mía desde hace mas de diez años
Try the Buzzcocks. They will be your new obsession.
The Yamano Sisters (Naoko and Atsuko) and Risa Kawano.
Love this attitude. Smiling when you playing.
Seen them live in Goa at the New wave Asia Music festival. Unforgettable experience!
Atsuko is back?? No way awesome! That drummer is like a metronome too.
She's been back since 2015 or so. 👍
Love Atsuko ❤️
Shonen Knife has given the world a nice mix of well-done covers and their own playful rock n roll. Immortal.
If you are a very good boy and live a very good life, when you die you will ascend into Shonen Knife Asgard, whose soundtrack is basically this.
What a joyous noise
super great drumming
Risa is an accomplished musician, she plays drums, xylophone, keyboards and classical piano

Damn, these ladies kick ass!!! Been together since the 80s, too. Loving it!
They are all perfectly in sinc and smiling!

Something about making loud music with a smile... That makes the song sound so much better to me...
They're so cute and happy! Love them.
They play so tight and make it look so easy. Amazing. ❤
The happiest band in the world!!
Well, that just made my day better.
Makes me want to dig through my old vinyl and have a day of Shonen Knife and The Queers.
Last song is a complete nostalgia trip
Best band ever
This is friggin’ TIGHT!!!
Nice to see Atsuko again - I saw SK twice here in Victoria, BC Canada - ichiban!

Just saw a article online that Kurt Cobain said this was the best band. So I'm here just rocking out and loving it 😌
SAME !! ♥
This is amazing..
They need their own cartoon like Josie and the Pussycats.
Atsuko is an excellent kazooist.
why didn't I discover this band earlier :(
they were in europe in march and played multiple concerts that i could've gone to
Atsuko! Yay!!
OUR LADIES OF ROCK
I LOVE SHONEN KNIFE
This is genius. Wow.
so many variations of one signature move. bravo!
What's not to love!!!!!
PUNK POP HAPPY FEELGOOD UNPRETENTIOUS
wowie. One of Kurt Cobain's favourite bands.
Kurt who?
@@matthewgaunt4358 😂 He'd actually love that you asked that. 👍
@Struan Robertson I thought Shonen Knife & The Breeders were opening for Nirvana back in the day? Or are you being facetious? 🤔
@Struan Robertson I'm pretty sure you are right. Kurt was fond of the drummer's skills in particular I recall.
That said, is this the same drummer?
And a kazoo solo. Shonen Knife does things their own way.
Can we please get these radical ladies on KEXP!
ohh great drum player
She doesn't even look tired, play everything with such ease
love it!
SHONEN KNIFE ROCK SOO HAARRD
That's a banging version of Banana Chips!
They are still going? fantastic.
This version of Buttercup (I'm a Super Girl) goes SO hard dude. Shonen Knife kicks ass!!
Saw them last week, kickass
That drummer is pretty good !
The songs are very Ramones inspired, but they are so cutesy, love them
Kurt Cobain brought me here
Me three

Every guitar and drums are the TOP custom and very special and top quality, you can just tell,I dont recognize any but I bet they are,all made by top Japanese builders
That bass is a custom from Fujigen in Japan, and those guitars are from Daisy Rock Guitars in Los Angeles.
Recent Guardian newspaper article brought me here. Ramen Rock's so fun....great performance! Look forward to collecting the albums. Is that a Daisey Rock guitar? Such great tone and fun drummer!
Wow pero que banda!! No la conocia en absoluto. Quedé loco.
Awesome... I really Like it
Good stuff, now you just need the pillows on here.
That bass is really pretty, anyone know what it is?
Atsuko is playing her custom pink Fujigen.
Atsuko plays a Fujijen; when Ritsuko is with them, she plays a Fender Japan Jazz Bass; Naru (Japan Road Bassist) plays a Rick 4001.
Godamn the pillows would be great
So Naoko: guitar
Ritsuko: bass
Atsuko: drum??
I love it... Very chill.
Touring Australia soon. Gonna go and see/hear some more......

Atsuko's there playing with them
There's so much complimentary language I would like to share, but dare not.
When I grow up, I want to be KEXP too.
No one would have ever heard this band if not for Kurt Cobain promoting them and allowing them to tour with Nirvana.
The Knife! More relevant than Nintendo!!! Pop purists. Love love.

They are great!! they sound a little bit like The Fastbacks.
I like them
