The first half of the th-cam.com/users/postUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.

Nice idea. I once used train sleepers too in my garden. But then I realized that old train sleepers are painted and soaked in a very dangerous poisen called Creosot, which can give you different kind of allergy and is surposed to be develloping cancer, if too much contact. And over the years it will pollute the soil around it. I my country it is no longe legal to use old train sleepers in public areas. You can use it for private constructions, but it is still dangerous and it does pollute.

Those railroad ties are soaked in creosote because they are intended for ground contact.
Creosote is very toxic, not to be handled with the bare hands, and not to mention breathing, the dust of cut railroad tie soaked in creosote. spend a little money on some good wood or find a tree that has fallen down in someone’s yard. I’m sure they would donate it to you.

Забавно смотреть, что бы сделать лавку из говно доски, нужно сначала иметь в арсенале все данные станки, потратить кучу времени и прочее, а на выходе получить просто лавку. Все просто. Возьму на заметку. За видео респект, ща идею ну нет совсем.

Looks very unstable or is it just my opinion? Funny we didn’t see anyone trying it out. But it’s beautiful from a distance as long as you don’t sit on it. Lots of jagged edges.
Yea, especially with the backrest that far out. I think with a little tweaking it can be a good useable piece
I was wanting to see him put it in a form and then cover it with penetrating epoxy to stabilize it, and fill all the cracks and crevices. Not so much.

@@surfshop7552 Only if the backrest is placed against a wall will it be stable enough.
It's very pretty, but that backrest looks completely decorative; any pressure on it whatsoever and the whole bench and anyone on it are going to tip over.

This bench defies gravity in more ways than one. Didn't get the logic of such a distant backrest. Unless there's supposed to be a cushion. And the beam joining the feet at the bottom is rather badly eaten up. Honestly if two people sat in this it is very likely to tip over. That is why a lot of benches do not have backrests, so that the weight remains perpendicular, or the legs are much much wider so that backrest has perpendicular support as well. Anyway good filming. Скамейка из гнилья. Такие видео, это не инструкция как надо делать скамейки. Это только для просмотров. Хорошая картинка. Взять как можно хреново выглядящий кусок дерьма и изготовить типа конфетку. Все с умилением залипают. Жены мужьям, а у нас таких бревен до хрена, может и тебе с дивана встать? Цель одна,просмотры...

This is a beautiful build, but when you weigh in the chance of hitting a nail or spike, combined with the creosote and repeated application of toxic weed killers sprayed on RR ties each and every year by railway maintenance crews, you might want to pass. This certainly does not detract from a beautiful project.

In South Africa there is a big industry converting old sleepers to furniture.

My good friend i have 2 very important informations to tell you about that wood with all my good heart without being rude to you. First the liquid they use to those woods its bad for your health to breath when you cut the wood. Second when a wood like that have termites on it never ever put it in your workshop because they will seek a new house and termites love soft wood so they will surely go to the nice pine woods furniture your making. (I work as pest exterminator) Keep the good work

Just a note for US viewers, railroad ties, are pressure treated with creosote, which is not a good thing to use in wood working projects.

I like the rustic look of the bench with all those cracks, but they are the perfect home for insects that will damage the wood and that I definitely wouldn't want in my home. Maybe it would have been better to fill the cracks with resin or something to make the bench more durable.

did you notice the R.R. SPIKE that indacates that it was a r.r. tie that has been pressure treated with creasoak which is a highly toxic cancer causing agent

Old cross-ties in my area were treated with creosote. That would repel insects, but it might repel humans too. ;)

I did a landscaping project with 22 rail road ties. Found the cracks and cervices often contain small rocks and gravel that can quickly wipe out a chainsaw blade it you miss one or two!

What do you think with what kind of pesticides these sleepers were treated ? In the old days there were the basic chemicals used , as they were sprayed in Vietnam, agent orange, be careful if you touch it or inhale dust from it .

They are also thick of oil from the trains, not the best idea I have seen, not a great idea using a chain saw either, hidden nails you may not see could cause a nasty accident, easier to just go and buy some decent timber to be honest.
Where I live they cover it with mazut that is very bad for you. People sometimes use this wood in their gardens or to burn in their wood stoves not knowing that it is toxic.
In Norway it is usually used creosote on the electric post and rail sleepers. Last forever. But this wood would give you cancer eventually over time.

I work for cn in northern bc Canada and we still use wood ties,prolly install 20 to 50,000 a year where i live. Only mainline gets concrete,branch lines yards are still wood
It could be good idea, or could be not. It depends on antiseptic which was used in thees sleeper, could it be it was creosote or used oil? They are very dangerous...

1 - that’s not an old railway sleeper.
2 - old railway sleepers are soaked in very sticky smelly oil based liquids for months as a preservative; the last thing you want to do is sit on one of those.

If that thing isn't fastened down, the first time someone tries to bridge that gap and lean against that back rest, they'll be on their back when it falls over. Pretty though.
