Love everything about ZZ Top sounds, thanks for this video! I heard Billy say in an interview he was asked how he got that Strat sound on La Grange (as he also played Pearly) and he just answered "because it's a Strat" 😂

Thanks Ross, you are the first to really talk about the gear and how to set it up, to get as close as possible to the sound of Billy Gibbons, as well as showing some really great techniques and ideas to use.

OK, good effort here, and well researched thanks. However you appear to have forgotten the Les Paul's Tone control part in taking the fizz off the top of its sound and creating a thicker, woodier and more harmonically rich and appealing tone like Billy's early playing had.

Awesome to see you playing your Les Paul and playing songs by one of my all time favorite guitarists! Rock on Ross! You did a great job with the feeling/vibe of the rhythm and solos too.

Great tips. Gotta love those pinch harmonics from Billy. A breakdown of Jimmy Page's sound would be great. As for actual tracks, you could take your pick!

    This is tight!
For the part of live doubling, there's a pedal called mimiq from TC electronics that, not only duplicate the signal but also allow you to control the level of difference in a random pitch and time 🤟

Ross, thanks for the upload. You absolutely nailed the tutorial. Billy’s early works are still some of the best examples of blues/rock logic that showcase his emotive soloing. El Hombre, nice. A future request if you haven’t already, would be Mark Knopflers’ finger picking style from the Brothers in Arms or On Every Street recordings. There’s some juicy stuff on the latter. Regards

Absolutely amazing video! Super informative and of all the new videos from other popular TH-camr Guitar Channels, yours is the only one I've seen that highlights BG's tone perfectly, which I think JRA wanted to accomplish. If I were JRA, your video would be the high bar, other YTGC's would need to strive to reach. Very well done! I'd love to see you do a video on AC/DC's tone; Malcolm especially - using the J. Rockett .45 calibur pedal.

@@RossCampbellGuitarist Absolutely. I can't believe I hadn't heard of your channel before now - I subscribe to hundreds of channels. I'm definitely a subscriber now! Also, I'm interested in your Line 6 HX Stomp XL - I own a Line 6 Spider V 60 Watt amp with FBV3 footboard. I had wanted the Helix, but it's just too expensive for what I would use it for. It seems the Stomp XL would be a better option for those on a budget but still be able to enjoy its versatile amp/cab library. Have you enjoyed it? Have you shared, or downloaded tones from others and added them to your Stomp XL? I also just paid for Amplitube 5 (Max) and I'm really enjoying that. Cheers from Sicily!

His gear has always been a mystery to me. With most of the greats you pretty much know what they used. With Hendrix you know it was always a Marshall. With SRV you pretty much know his core tone was a Super Reverb cranked with a Tube Screamer. But with Billy it just seems like he never had an exact amp that he always used but he still always "sounded like Billy Gibbons". You instantly know his 70's sound. You instantly know his 80's sound. Today I think he is MUCH heavier than he was back then but you still know it's him when you hear him. I'm glad to see him getting some love because he seems like one of those guys that everybody loves but hardly anybody ever really talks about as a genuine "influence" per se. I've got multiple J Rockett pedals (the Dude, Touch, and Golden Archer) but for whatever reason this one just isn't really resonating with me.

One fast way to get the tone: put a Duncan Pearly Gates in the bridge of your ax, any ax. It will give you that very honky, harmonic tone.

The older licks are cool but NO ONE talks the later riffs. Afterburners tone is crazy killer. J ricket don’t touch it. Mescalero is as gritty as it gets. Killer riffs all through it as well. Everyone knows the old licks. All these cats need to discuss the later stuff.

You're an amazing player, there's no doubt about that. But the tone in the video doesn't even come close to Billy Gibbons tone. The Helix, Kemper, Two Note Torpedo Captor, Ox Box, they all bite the big one. It's like having sex with a blow up doll. Technically it's sex but let's not pretend it's a real woman..

This digital stuff sounds so plastic. I think all you guys who use these toys don’t hear it because you are not used to real amps. Sorry but all the emulations sound nothing like the real deal, even in those videos that try to tell you that they do. I don’t get it. Don’t you have ears? If I hear it, you gotta hear it too! …On the other hand, as I said: How can you hear it if you don’t know what to look for.
It’s like trying to replicate the taste of milk when you never tasted it. …Oh wait, that’s exactly what some of you kids are doing. 😂
