I am so proud of you Ross. This is awesome Dude 👌 For sure no doubt... you are the Master. I've been following your lessons for awhile , a coupla years or so and you were the one who made Music Theory 🎶 make sense. I appreciate you so much. I am an Advocate for the Americans With Disabilities and I have been trying to find online instruction to recommend to those with challenges on how to learn guitar in different formats other than sight driven. You might be able to help me out with your Bulletproof 2.0 Online course 😉. Best of luck to you.
Thank You Ross, you've a really good balance and cadence when you break down the runs, also helpful with the fingerboard graphics shown. Much Appreciated
Oh thank God. Finally, someone who teaches the kind of licks i alwalys wanted to learn to play on guitar and always saw them in music videos, yet i didn't notice people teaching them on yt. Thank you!
I believe I have found my guitar Guru! You teach the things I have been wanting to learn and you explain them in a way that is easily understandable. Love your channel!
About 4yrs ago, I got injured at work. Had a good 6months off. I started searching TH-cam for great online teachers to pass the time. With a lot of time on my hands, I researched well over 200 online teachers. I found about 12 that taught real, no bs, lessons playing our favorite instrument. Ross is in my top 12 for sure. You've found a Great guy and teacher! Keep playing, enjoy and Rock on!!
Wow! I read all these comments about Ross after I posted to keep mine pure and authentic. This guy Ross Campbell must be related to Vivian Campbell. Aside from several similarities, Ross is just phenomenal at playing and teaching. Everyone in the comments section are supporting that. Happy New Year and God bless you all out there, my fellow pickers, thrashers, strummers, and shredders.🎸❤☺🙏👍
@@lancecass8997 So who were these teachers? I ask out of curiosity as I have a few myself. (not all guitar) Brian kelly from Zombie guitar. Jake Lizzio from signals music. Stitch guitar method. Sean Daniel. Ben Eller. Samuraiguitarist. Ricky Comiskey and justinguitar are some of the ones I rate highly.
You should make a whole course around this concept! And maybe after you show us the different runs you could break down how to use the patterns to improvise further. I’ve been practicing the first one all day today!
100% his tone is spectacular. I'm of the mindset that tone is derived from the competence and skill of the fiddler. Ross would sound like Ross playing a $100 Donner Strat
I really like this lesson as a great example of mixing different note groupings. The biggest thing for me was although the first lick is relatively straightforward, I’d never move Pentatonic shapes on the 4th string like that. Just a slight variation on what I normally do but that feels really fluent. It’s so cool to shine new light on old windows!!
Note groupings and practice are often not given enough focus by the majority of players. Joe , Gary and Eric J are all really great exponents of playing odd groupings whilst keeping the notes they play simple. Great video Ross hopefully it will go a long way to making folks think twice about playing solos consisting of triplets and sixteenth notes only🤘🏻
Ross - Great little lesson. Thanks for all you do for the community. Loved that second run...had an EJ-esque quality. Oh, and stellar alternate picking man. Happy Holidays.
Ross, I’m fairly new at guitar, but fairly old at 65. I liked how you broke down the lesson. Not that I totally understand your talk about positions and other terminology. But I was able to follow your breakdown of the notes and play it at 50%. I so wish I started guitar 55 years ago! Thank you! R
Definitely no beginner riff but the info is good stuff for everyone who plays ! I haven’t sat down with the electric guitar and tried to let any of it yet but its going to be something im going to work at hopefully it will sink in and I’ll be able to incorporate rate it into what little I really know
Ross Campbell I'm William Campbell I once met Vivian Campbell at a guitar show. All my brothers played my dad played and his mom played guitar. Must be in the Campbell blood. Rock on Ross you are an incredible player and teacher. Thanks !
I’ve decided for this year I’m going to look up licks that work along with my knowledge of the CAGED system and practice different licks every week. This seems perfect and hopefully I learn a lot more about what I’m doing.
Just discovered your channel today and have only watched this video but I really like how you break the sections into easy to understand bites. I’ve always wanted to be able to whip out some stockish ascending and descending licks that cover more of the fret board than the 4 and 6’s in a box position. I say stock as in to add to my bag of tricks not as in boring. I’ve been playing for nearly thirty years with a good 15 to 16 year gap of not really practicing and progressing just whipping out an acoustic here and there but all the guitar content on TH-cam has reignited the passion for guitar and I’ve been playing pretty seriously for the past 2 plus years. Thanks for taking the time to break this down for someone with very little theory can understand and implement. I couldn’t get my parents to buy me lessons growing up but had a couple friends that did take lessons and I was able to keep up them as far as what they could do by the guitar mags and what They would show me from their lessons but I always felt like I was holding on for dear life lol. We all three managed to challenge each other and competition drove us to get better. I still don’t really understand the positions of the fretboard but maybe if I hang around this channel it’ll come together eventually. Man I wish I had the resources when I started playing that beginners do today.
I did not think I could learn that 1st ascending run this quickly. I figured it would at least take a month. but it took me about 3 days to play at speed. Today is the 4th day, and I will try to play it faster than 100%, so 100% will be easy. I’ve been playing since the 1980s, but only recently have made significant gains in fast picking by learning Van Halen I’m the One, which made me even think I could attempt this. That previous lick haunted me for decades until I tried it. I tried your 3 beats per day technique, but what worked for me was jumping around. I find my fastest speed without mistake, then play about 20 % faster barely hanging on. I was at 60% speed cleanly. and then just tried it at 90%….Then Something weird happened. Even though I wasn’t perfect, I was picking differently…More musically. Then suddenly, 80% was cleanly. It’s weird…like once you get the feel of playing it fast, the rest falls in place. Later that day, I tried 100%… and it was not perfect, but then 94% was cleanly. Then 100% speed and beyond.
Thanks. Good stuff . Lots of people , it seems , like to talk of 'great tone' - the truth is, I hardly ever plug my Strat in - it doesn't seem to hamper me in any great way.
This guy clearly explains how to do scale runs! At my age I still trying to figure how to do " scale runs"!!! My fingers kinda hurt. Maybe I need a guitar with low string action? 🤔
Sounds great in Bm. Thanks for these three licks….seems like you can teach an old dog new tricks after all. The 2nd lick on string set 1 really helped speed up my descending….something I’ve always struggled with. If I was 40 years younger and starting to play again with your lessons I would have been like Malmsteen or Guthrie G by the time I was 20…..maybe 😊Great tone Ross…..hope the new course for 2023 works out for you.
This is the best lesson I’ve watched to date. Excellent. Really well laid out, and had me subconsciously re-learning all pentatonic positions and new ways to enter and exit each position. Man just great!, Thanks.
Hi Ross . Hope you're doing well . I just now saw one of your Videos for Pentatonic Scales and I immediately Subscribed . I've already looked thru a few of your Videos . Wow Dude . At this point I just want to say Thank You for sharing your Knowledge and putting in the work to make these Videos available to the people like me who can't really afford to purchase Hour long Guitar Lessons from a Professional Guitarist like you , who could easily just insist on only giving Lessons face to face at $ 75 . 00 an hour and not share your knowledge on TH-cam . Anyway , thanks . This Pentatonic Lesson that I'm starting with is frikn Amazing !! Hopefully I can get it up to speed sometime in the next few weeks and then I'll feel like I'm making progress .
That sliding thing to a different position...I can just imagine how that could be utilized to, as well as making closer note ascending or descending jumps to different positions, one could use that strategy to go from low to, all of a sudden, slide up to a really high position, and vise versa...thanks for this, IMO, great video.
Yup. Also single string work is something most people don’t do enough of. Just mentioning because it combines well with the technique of shifting the you were pointing out. Especially with the “full” major/minor scales. All of that together will definitely open up possibilities you can explore forever. Endless things to shed!
This is great stuff. When I was a kid decent guitar tuition was non existent. We had crappy magazines, erroneous tab books or overpriced tutors that had nothing to teach.
Thanks for an awesome tutorial and great playing! Quick question and suggestion…. What are the picking patterns you prefer here? The first definitely seems like alternate picking, but the other ones are more complex. It would be good if you briefly stated which strokes you’re using because it’s hard to just catch it from watching, since I can’t easily see both hands at once. I can mostly figure it out, but it isn’t obvious at first and I don’t immediately use the right sequence since I’m more used to using hybrid in my own playing…. Also, it would be good to point out when you’re NOT using the ring finger to fret notes, as this also deviates from what most people usually do and can save a lot of trouble in some instances. This may be obvious to some people, but I’m sure there are more out there struggling to figure out the best way, and the few seconds you take to point it out could really save us from creating bad habits that are then more difficult to reprogram later. It might also help a lot of people to see exactly how you’re holding the pick, if they want to go fast! Thanks again and keep it up, these are a big help! Cheers!
Yeah that’s be helpful for some people I’d imagine, but unless I wanted to rip it as fast as I could possibly, I enjoy figuring out my own picking technique for runs like this, I’m not a great alternate picker I can do it but it’s not natural, I use more economy and legato most of the time. I think that unless you’re trying to sound as close to someone else as possible the picking technique really along with vibrato is what makes everyone unique. I’m self taught so I’m sure I have many bad habits, including using my ring finger to fret notes I should probably be stretching with my middle finger to prepare for the next string. I think it would be wise for a new player to get in the habit of using their middle finger to fret the second note on a string in a run ? I don’t see what it could hurt as long as they weren’t going to hard and injure their hands. Anyway that’s my 2 cents no one asked for, but I’ve definitely noticed that I have way more control on three note per string and especially symmetrical scale patterns if I use my middle finger to fret the second note on a string even though it feels weird because I’m so used to using my ring finger to hammer on the 7 fret to 9th fret the comfortable box motion. I noticed most of the players I really admire are making a lot of first to middle finger stretches and all over the neck.
I keep catching myself defaulting to hammer ons and pull offs in an effort to try and shortcut my way to get it fast. Am I shooting myself in the foot there? Do you pick every single note or use hammers and pull offs? @RossCampbellGuitarist
Really great content and lessons. I appreciate the way you break these down and show it slow enough for people to learn. You truly are a fantastic teacher. Much appreciated. Happy New Year.
I really love this video's gives me new inspiration. It is so easy for a guitar player to get stuck in the same kind of licks and moves because of muscle memory. I remember the first video I saw on this channel it was about runs and licks in the key of Em I loved it an subscribed. And I am happy I did .
Wonderful playing and great sounding guitar . While using the MIDI on the Kernom pedal , does that mean it can be used for piano sounds ? Thanks for the lesson 🙏
Hi Ross, thanks for another brilliant video, huge fan here! Having a challenge bringing lick one up to speed and have a question. Are you picking exclusively from the wrist for this one?
Nice lesson as ever thanks, but one thing i've noticed is that you don't always indicate which notes are picked and which are hammer-ons, to play with the full effect on this kind of lick it makes a big difference i reckon. I've noticed it on some other of your videos too, i'm not knocking you i think you do great lessons, just a thought to make it easier and sound more like when you play it at speed.....?
Hey! I know you're a big fan of Mateus Asato, me too, Ive watched your lick inspired ideas of his. Do you think you could make a lesson about his rhythm and lead style? His ability to go from one chord voice to the next with ghost notes and other little embellishments inbetween, that would so great to hear you break it down!
Hey! To be honest that side of his playing is one that I'm not proficient in. I'd love to get better at that style of playing myself so I'm not at a level where I'm ready to teach that type of material with confidence.
Hey Ross - great vid as always! I really struggle with making my bends sound good and resolving them properly apart from the typical b3 > 4 and 4 > b5/5 in your typical blues licks. You did a nice R > 2 bend in a John Mayer lick in a short video recently. It would be great if you could do a video on how to play alternative bends in solos, maybe some frameworks for doing so etc... Keep up the gooooooood work! Cheers, O
What works for me is tackling a section as he broke it down at a time get to where you can play the first section without thinking about it, then on to the second and once the first and second are automatic separately put them together usually I’ll add the last note of the first section to the second section to help the transition from one section to the next. That’s what I’ve found works best for me, I can’t wrap my head around the whole run at once I have to use the elephant eating method and then once and if I can figure out a pattern or formula it makes sense as a white run. This is kinda like doing 6’s in a box shape just 5s and more linear?
Great playing. One thing I noticed is your right hand technique. As you move through the lick your right hand moves diagonally as you ascend the neck. I have difficulty moving across strings and am wondering if this is how I should do it?
Thanks! Give it a try and see. It's something I just kind of noticed that I do, not something I intentionally developed as part of my technique if that makes sense.
Great content, how does your site work is there lessons that follow each other?, so once you learn one part u move onto the next an so on?. A lot of sites just have heaps of different lessons and it’s hard to follow which ones to learn in what order. Cheers
Did u say Phil X? Good to see a local boy being acknowledged for being the incredible guitarist he's always been! Was ecstatic to find that Rick Beato and he were friends.
im very curious as to why u didn’t use economy picking for the first one and used strictly alternate picking? I can’t seem to execute it with economy picking though
Hi Ross, loving this ( also just bought your new book ) just a quick question, when you are playing at the beginning of this vid, what was your bpm? you may have said in the video, but i didnt pick it up. cheers! brilliant as always 👍
Those all very cool Zach wild type of pentatonic personal I think it's better for new young players learn the scale and start coming up with there own but this type of thing helps young players understand how to use pent so they can come up with their own stuff

I remember the first video I saw on this channel it was about runs and licks in the key of Em I loved it an subscribed. And I am happy I did .
Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
Wonderful playing and great sounding guitar . While using the MIDI on the Kernom pedal , does that mean it can be used for piano sounds ? Thanks for the lesson 🙏
Great tips! Love your easy to follow examples.
If I just had another hand, i think id make it.
Cheers mate!!
Great runs and good explanation! Thanks mate
Thank you!
You have the quad? I’ll go look to see if you did any demos. I love it.
Fantastic playing. I've always admired that strat of yours. What exactly is it? I love that guitar
Thanks! Here's a video all about it - th-cam.com/video/dcdne8CtXLk/w-d-xo.html
I was training for 2 hours the first its really rewarding bro thanks I didn't get it totally clean yet but im hooked thanks alot ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hi Ross, thanks for another brilliant video, huge fan here! Having a challenge bringing lick one up to speed and have a question. Are you picking exclusively from the wrist for this one?
I have to thank you again Ross for taking your time to open so many new avenues for me to explore! Much obliged sir. 😊
Glad it helped Gordon!
Sublime sounds and a lovely explanation m. Thank you
Happy New Year Ross! Your my first new sub of 2023. Your an incredible player and teacher! Peace man!
Thanks David! Happy new year
Great stuff! thank you, can you elaborate more on the right hand on some of this especially the last run. 🙏🏻
I am so excited to rip thru these!🎉🎉. Thanks so much 😊
Grest lesson and great licks. The link to the music tabs doesnt work unfortunately. Cheers
great stuff. not as simple as I thought when I first saw it. tricky fingering for us that are too used to staying in one position
Faantastic runs!!! Faantastic played!
I will a have a look on your site!
Cheers, O
Thanks! Can do thanks for the suggestion
Thank you Ross Campbell... what is ur guitar model....do you give guitar classes???
Dang this lesson is beating me up. So fun and challenging to play! Ross any tips for building up speed?
17:13. 17:33. 18:52. 19:18. 18:10. 18:33. 18:59. 19:26. 19:50
This is kinda like doing 6’s in a box shape just 5s and more linear?
keep up the good work my friend, im enjoying the ride
Great licks Ross! What tempo are you playing at full speed?
What happened to the tabs???
Any suggestions for improving alternate picking speed?
WOW! That sounds soooo good!😍
Thanks!
The second and 3rd ones are killers 💪🔥
Awesome. I thought I was the only one that right hand moved forward and I get to the higher strings 😮
Haha yeah I have a habit of doing that
As always amazing content and amazing quality! Love it!
Thank you!
Sounds good. Nice Strat!
Ross love your channel. Do you set up all your own guitars or take them to a luthier
I assume we can run the riffs in both directions ascending or descending once familiar with them ??
Loved this video Ross.
what’s the best way to practice this? I struggle with keeping it fluid with a metronome
Was there a PDF or tab for this one Ross please or is it in you're new Book or course?? thanks!
Thanks for breaking them down!
I just got an email stating that Bulletproofguitar subscription service is coming to an end. Is Bulletproof Guitar 2.0 still coming?
Those all very cool Zach wild type of pentatonic personal I think it's better for new young players learn the scale and start coming up with there own but this type of thing helps young players understand how to use pent so they can come up with their own stuff
Great tone!
