  • Filmed at The Pit cenote in Mexico. Part of the Dos Ojos system.
This was a dive we did with two very experienced OW Instructors. It was classed as a cavern dive and is a popular dive now in the Tulum region of Mexico.
Sadly, a few years after making this movie, Jarrod lost his life in a diving incident off the coast of Australia. I only got to know him briefly, but he was a truly unique character that was a pleasure to be around. I'm glad we did this movie for them. It was one of the best dives I've ever done at the Pit, and will remain a very special moment for me.

Quizás, nunca estemos en un cenote. Pero gracias a estos vídeos podemos ver cómo son, el compartir es amor.

How the hell are recreational divers allowed so far into an overhead enviroment?

Aah, those were the days. When you had to drive an unmade road, then kit up and carry all your gear 500 meters through the jungle to get to the entrance point.
Now it's all paved and even has a toilet block.
The divers stay within the legally permitted range. It looks further as it's dark, but at the point where the hydrogen sulphide gas is still open water as you can ascend directly to the surface.
The other parts into the cavern is still no more than 6om from the daylight zone, considered a cavern.
It was/is considered an advanced cavern dive, but mainly due to the depth and entrance.
Right or wrong, cavern diving under supervision is still permitted for open water divers in Mexico. For how long this will continue, who knows... but it's getting more regulated every year.
Saying that, the guys that work this are some of the best in the world, supremely experienced and take thousands of divers into these environments throughout the year with an astonishingly good safety rate, much better than open water diving.
But the argument for/against is rampant on tech diving forums all over the web.
But while it's legal and there is a market, this is how it is.

Dan D You go in with an experienced cave dive guide like Paolo who knows the area and has additional safety equipment like two independent air systems. I’ve been here a 3 times already and felt totally safe. The good new is that they won’t let you in without a dive guide that is cave certified and knows these caves.
