    Even in a catastrophic crash, I don't see any situation where a stem that short could just shear off down the middle. The bars would break, or the steerer tube would crack but I think the stem would remain intact. Maybe a longer stem could snap, but not one of those.

    • @chickensendies
      @chickensendies  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep! I actually just posted a part 2 testing the tolerances of the bolts at high torques.

  • @mtbboy1993
    @mtbboy1993 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Keep in mind with the handlebar there will be twisting force on an impact. Crashing on a jump with back hitting the ground and rider on it. So bar can flex stem in any direction upon impact. But yes the stems you tried there seemed to do fine. But no idea how they compare to expensive ones.
    Bu keep in mind tolerances are also important not only durability.

    • @chickensendies
      @chickensendies  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I am sure "expensive" ones would have done fine as well 😁 Hard to test everything that can potentially go wrong but definitely gave it a go HAHAHAHA

    IMO, the failure on any stem would be the bolts shearing or the threads pulling out. If you can get them to the proper torque without that happening, you should be good to go.

    It looks like the Blue one 💙 may be stronger, some metals are thin as a feather 🪶, I have had to replace every 12 months the Shimano shifters and I suspect, when moisture comes in your closed garage door, it gets into the components of the bike and messes em up, like my Mongoose Terrex bike.

      Always store the bike dry and indoors lubed chain. If riding in the winter road salt is a thing to worry about, so wash bike after every ride hand dry with microfiber towels, lube chain, wipe.

    • @mtbboy1993
      @mtbboy1993 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Shifters are easy to service, take off screws cover, spray degreaser, grease with fresh grease once a year. Shifters can lad for decades. Keep in mind old factory grease will stiffen. But not servicing and if salt an moisture gets in it will rust get stuck. You should use light grease, Shimano has their own shifting wire grease. But suspension grease will work too. But don't use a spray lube or wet lube as it will be a mess.

    I've seen Wake stems ths thad horrible burrs sharp edges, seen several snapped, even seen their handlebars that were out of spec, so stme would not clamp it, wall thickness varied on one, thus the holes were not round, one had different rise on each side, bend was different. I would not buy any of it. Cheap alternatives exist. The thing is the quality varies, they used worn out tools to machine it, causing the burrs, sharp edges which would cause failure eon a carbon handlebar. But some had better quality, some did not. But I would not risk it.
    They were also cast alu. Not forged, thus weaker. Maybe they changed things since then.

    its not like well known bike brands have ever dome recalls for safety issues on their parts.
