- www.crosstraini... The Gas Gas 2018 models are another welcome addition to the European two stroke enduro market. One thing I like about the smaller brands is they seem to attract passionate honest riders as dealers, at least here in Australia. I've been impressed with every Beta and Gas Gas dealer I've met as they are honest about the bike's good and bad points, and genuinely want to see riders end up on the bike that will be best for them. Jody is the Gas Gas dealer for the Illawarra region south of Sydney and as an experienced mechanic he was keen to point out the common mods, known issues and strong points of the 2018 Gas Gas models.

It's great to see another excellent two stroke enduro in the market. While Gas Gas have made superb trials bikes forever, reviews of their earlier two stroke enduro models consistently said they were heavy, underpowered and had mediocre suspension. I never rode the older heavy Gas Gas models, but at a reported 105kg they are getting close to the industry standard. It feels light, very stable at speed, and the flared side panels make it easy to grip the bike with your legs. If you sit a lot then you'll like the soft seat too. Power delivery is extremely linear with almost no powerband evident, at least with the stock power valve setting. At first I wondered if I was actually on a 250 because I was stalling the bike in technical terrain, and needing to keep the revs up on hill climbs. But as the speed picked up I found that gentle power was a pile of fun. Financial troubles almost killed off the brand a few years ago but they are back with a revamped 2018 range which is lighter, more powerful and finally with great suspension, those brilliant Kayaba forks and rear shock from Japan. Like Beta, they have FMF exhausts standard. And all models come standard with a kick start, for guys who really miss this on other European brands. I rarely ride my Beta RR300 at higher revs as it scares the shit out of me, but with the Gas Gas I was happily giving it handfuls of very predictable throttle. And the Gas Gas is no slouch, there's a reported 55hp on tap and it really sings along when you hit the gas... gas. Great to see a very light hydraulic clutch, matched with a slick gearbox and nice wide ratios. There are three models, the Gas Gas 300EC base model with all the road gear. The Gas Gas 300XC is the cross country racer with slightly firmer suspension and an engine slightly retuned for competition. Then if bling is your thing there's the 300GP model with floating front disc, gripper seat, Rekluse clutch cover, anodised triple clamps, renthal bars, quick release front axle, the list goes on. So starting with the Gas Gas 300EC review what's it like? First the suspension is beautiful. Incredibly supple over small bumps, but soaked up the jumps and big hits with ease. Personally I found the lack of grunt made it a bit harder in technical terrain or on tough slow climbs, but it just means needing to rev and slip the clutch more. The seat height is on par with other brands so short legged riders may find it's a stretch to reach the ground, the Beta would suit better in that respect. Having said that, all these European two stroke models are brilliant nowadays - top riders are winning enduros on Shercos, Betas, KTMs and Gas Gas two strokes. It makes me wonder why European brands keep stuffing around with European suspension. The past two years Beta have dialled in the Sachs suspension very close to the standard set by Kayaba, I reckon all the Europeans could have saved a lot of messing around years ago by opting for Kayaba. Then over to the Gas Gas 300XC review the cross country racer. There's meant to be more mid range power with a slightly different pipe, personally I couldn't really pick this out. The Kayaba suspension is firmer on the XC, still very plush but I think more aggressive riders would appreciate getting a bit more feel of the terrain back through the wheels with the XC. So where does the Gas Gas fit into the market? First it's very competitively priced at least here in Australia.
THE NEW RIEJU MODELS! The old Gas Gas models have continued under a new name - Rieju. For 2021, the models have only minor changes so this review will still applicable. As of 2021, Rieju still has only made minor changes. Unfortunately the heavy weight persists. They haven't changed the unreliable e-start, although we hear it's bathed in oil now which should help a bit. The engines are still soft at the lower revs. But if the price is cheap, we think it's still a good option in the two stroke market! Unfortunately they are priced not much less than the competition in Australia... so why pay so much for a six year old design? If you don't know about Rieju, read below...
Unfortunately KTM is becoming a huge multinational trying to buy up the competition, such as Gas Gas. The good news? Rieju in Spain has bought the intellectual and industrial property used to build GasGas enduro models which will continue under the RIEJU brand. And the Ranger will continue as the Rieju MR300 Ranger!
adbmag.com.au/editorial/rieju-to-manufacture-enduro-models-on-gasgas-platform/
The investment made by RIEJU will see the GasGas 300 two-stroke as we know it today manufactured under the RIEJU brand at its plant in Figueres, Spain. Distribution of new bikes will start in June. Rumours are circulating that suggest RIEJU is currently updating the platform to modernise a few key aspects including relocating the starter motor.
Jordi Riera, CEO of RIEJU, S.A. said “This agreement allows RIEJU an immediate presence in the off-road competition segment with larger capacity machines than usual for Rieju, as well as a significant expansion of our client portfolio, and important openings to new markets.
We are very excited for this new adventure and the enormous challenge that this entails. We have enormous experience in our design, manufacture and distribution structure, so we are convinced that this project will be a success for our company."
RIEJU was founded in 1934 and currently manufactures more than 12,000 motorcycles annually in its facilities in Figueres near Barcelona and exports 85% of its production to more than 40 countries. It’s known for producing small-to-mid capacity scooters, trailbikes and roadbikes.
UPDATE FOR 2019 MODELS: there have been issues with some kick starters, Gas Gas is fixing these under warranty. There still seem to be very few issues, one guy has reported his fork guards have been rubbing against the forks so keep an eye out for that.
Can't say it enough. Love my gas gas 300 ec and my txt 300 trials bike!
I have a 2015 GasGas, only thing that let it down it my opinion was the airbox.. Had to completely strip the rear end and use silicone sealant to make the airbox more water resistant.. Bike runs mint each and every day ever since that modification!
About to upgrade from my drz 400 to a gas gas ec350 bloody excited to say the least
very happy with my Gas GAS 300gp ...happy Happy
it looks like they have kept making bikes to a good standard, I have an 01 xc 250 and never a problem except for a few hard starts after sitting for months...
Jody hands down is the best bloke and dealer ever
amen!
Thanks happy riding
Horn mod....... remove and throw in the garbage.
Hi, im talking from spain! The start is not good working, mine failed, so i thought, what is different from the last year model? only the painting in the support of the start motor, if you eliminate que black paint from that part to the motor, starting motor goes faster.
and you can too take a cable from the motor to the ignition coil, for faster starting.
And one more problem with the start, will be better if you take the bendix and clean it good and lubricate, cause water and mud can be a problem and make harder to work the bendix.
Hope i can help you !
muchas gracias julian! very good points.
Good to know.. figured so.. It's looking like pre 17' ktm .
When I press the start button, the start motor work, but the engine does not ignite. I changed a new spark plug, and for the first time I could start a fire, but two days later I couldn't. I recharged the batterie and then I could catch fire, but I couldn't do it a few days later. I don't know why. So does my friend's EC300
@@aspirinchung1363 make sure you have the updated ground strap like the vid talks about. Maybe check spark plug wire where it plugs in the coil and its on tight.
The extra earth cable needs to BE mounted between the batery and the Starter or could it be just on batery and other point? Thanks
Thanks! The cable mod seems to work for some. Mine sometimes won't start with hot engine. I will receive a new cdi and rotor in order to fix this. Apparently there is no spark when the estart runs because the ignition phase is too short.
interesting... i googled for known issues with the gas gas and there seem to be very few, at least with the newer models.
I have had starter issues from day one with my gas gas had the whole thing replaced and still doesn’t work only occasionally and it screams and sounds awful when you try and start it
I second the quality service from my local Beta dealer. Tuff City Powersports. Perhaps you know them...
never met the guys but super appreciative they lent me a xtrainer for a week when i was in BC. hoping to ride the island one day....
Not many bike shops invite you to go out riding with them the day you buy a bike. He even offered to let me try his 300rr (when I am ready).
cool hey? cameron is the beta dealer for sydney and if guys are interested in buying he just invites them out on his next ride on a demo model. never pressures anyone to buy, just likes to share the love. he regularly puts on rides for all his customers and sometimes even subsidises training days with tim coleman so they don't have to pay much. a real old school dealer!
I am buying a second hand gas gas 300 2000 any suggestions what to look out for... When buying. All the best Armando..
no idea armando, this vid was about the recent models. 😢
If the bike is not starting but was yesterday after putting gas in it
Can anyone help me! I have a gasgas ec250r 2018 and I keep fouling plugs ever ride out is there a reason for this and am running the recommended fuel mix so I don’t think it’s that! If anyone has any suggestions also what plugs do you’s uses. Thanks in advance
Join the gasgas Facebook groups. Sure you could get help there... I have same bike with no issues
Have 300 gasgas counter Balance shaft for less vibration
Hi.. what do you think of fuel consumption? Got myself the 250 version it seems incredibly thirsty. Only ridn around the block just to feel it. Went almost half way through the tank. Doesn't feel right
jody touched on the jetting issue. i think many of the euro bikes are jetted rich for european conditions, so can chew fuel in hotter climates? can't confirm this for gas gas models though.
I bought the 2018 EC300, and my brother got a 2018 Beta 300rr. We both noticed the Gas Gas burns a lot more fuel especially when on more open trails at higher rpm’s. The Gas Gas came from the factory of course jetted very rich for our normal riding elevation of 500 to 2,800 ft above sea level, but the JD jet kit did a very good job of solving that issue. Still thirsty though compared to the Beta..... I feel the KYB suspension makes up for that 👍
Rode with a guy this past November and he was on his Re-jetted GG 300 and me on my 17 Ktm 250xc with a Lectron. He sucked down a whole tank and had to bail back to the truck and I had barely used half (both stock tanks) on mine. Terrain was a mix of super technical and wide open. My Lectron is super economical.
Wow so does my 19 EC 300 even more so than my CR500 or KX500
Rich jetting only uses a little more fuel since you'd quickly foul plugs at say 5-10% more fuel. Throttle body fuel injection is barely more efficient than correctly jetted carbs on 2 strokes because of the wild journey that fuel takes before entering the combustion chamber. A friend might run at higher RPMs and go through fuel faster
Hmmm curious to see how that starter setup works out in the long run. Seeing that but not knowing much about it and not really having a way to learn more about it before hand is what swayed me away from buying the 18 ec300. Was real close to pulling the trigger on one on account of the kyb suspension were it not for that starter. Maybe it'll prove to be reliable though, I hope so. My next bike could very well be a gas gas after this '18 xcw.
it was the only thing that concerned me too. it seems to be a similar design to the old KTM ones that caused so much grief, but jody the mechanic reckons the gas gas design is way more solid. but still still not as reliable as the under the motor design everyone else is using.
I have had issues with my electric start, diagnosing them now but it seems to be a common issue with them. Quite sad really because the rest of the bike is amazing.
I tested gas gas 300ec 2019 and turning radius was way too big.
How about the Gas Gas 300ec 2019 6 Days?
Is 50:1 the recommended premix ratio on these bikes?
no idea michel, this was just a test ride.
yeah that's what you should go with. The piston will be fine even if you use a little less but the bearings can overheat. So I recommend you stick with 1:50 for GG. My dealer told me 1:60 would be fine but I have seen images of discolored crankshafts that changed my mind...although that was 10 years ago so maybe that has changed. It also depends on your riding style, if you never rev the engine 1:50 might actually get you lots of carbonized deposits.
so your dealer told you actually to use more oil for a given amount of gasoline (greater ratio of oil). 1 liter of oil for 50 liter of gasoline versus 1 liter of oil versus 40 liter of gasoline or am I misreading the values.
Erdat Çataloğlu sorry I meant 1:60 not 1:40
Yes, 50:1 is recommended
Nice Review 👌
Thank you 🙂
im guilty...i stopped watching this before 3 minutes : P
one of the wheels fell off just after then ron.... lol
Nice one
Hi,Not sure if this is the right forum but I need some advice please- I have a Gasgas 300 2003 model- starts first kick and then dies- replaced 2 spark plugs already and now the 3rd( BR8EG) in a matter of 3 weeks- what is causing this- the bike when running spatters in 1st to 3rd gear- then in 4th and 5th gear everything comes together and it runs strong and smooth, any tips?
Why would I trust a manufacturer that cannot even place a horn correctly? I understand that it's not an essential component, surely not on an offroad bike, but what if the rest is an afterthought too?
Web site or email for a Gasgas dealer in Australia please. I live in Thailand

Thai dealer has NO PARTS
People get so hung up on issues that bikes have, but all bikes have issues. Having said that, new factory bikes shouldn't need that many modification!
JoeJoe Moto Some issues make a bike not worth buying. Buying a new bike should be an upgrade and an upgrade worth the much more money spent. Kyb is fine but anyone could buy a 17 ktm, husky, Beta for even earlier years and have a better estart and save a bunch of money doing it.
Might be just me, but I saw 3 basic things, not really mods as much as tune ups...? Thought this video was a little light on detail
I just bought an xtrainer, there are a bit of technical riding required here. But its mostly open tractor roads, did I buy the wrong bike? My first bike ever was a 2000 rm250. I was never higher then 3rd gear, and I just want to know I will keep up with th exc125s I ride with
2yrs in, did you buy the wrong bike?
@@bigshnitzeljesse no, not at all. But I was tired of being "limited" if you understand. Just buy a fullout enduro instead, I bought an exc 250 tpi instead
im sorry but i barely take chances on my bike. i will stick with my ktm
Boring. Beige walls?. Drive a ford? 😂
@@JamesBrown-zk6tl no, but he probably fights with his suspension non stop before he does the "kyb suspension mod" to his forks. 😂
@@JamesBrown-zk6tl I don't have a Ford(overpriced imo) but I'd haul my bikes in a Raptor over any other truck.
Ahhh my eyes! Please please please do your videos in 50/60fps. (i think 50hz is a euro thing?) I don't think there is an LED screen in existence anymore that is less that 50/60hz. Including phones, tablets and computer monitors. 30fps on a 60hz screen looks terrible in comparison to 60fps. Alot of us have 144hz+ screens...and that looks even worse. You can buy 165 and 240hz monitors now....for the love of knobbies, please use 60fps as default. 30fps has no place in action sports/dirt riding videos.
everything is done on a shoestring budget, if you'd like to upgrade my laptop and storage devices etc to cope with files twice in size i'm all years. :) otherwise it's just waiting until i can upgrade everything under my own steam.
Dont misunderstand, im not trying to be an inconsiderate ass. More just contructive ideas and such. Didnt know if you knew of monitors and hz and things. As far as your storage stuff...what do you have, and what do you need? IE- what equipment would it take to get you rolling with 60fps? I'm sure between myself and your other viewers, a couple 256gb sd cards could probably make it into your hands. An idea...make an amazon wish list and post it on your website.
i appreciate constructive tips zeus for sure! had quite a few comments the past two years that i need to do this eventually but my laptop struggles with 30fs as is, despite being an expensive one. at this stage i need to replace two damaged cameras first but will look into this for the long term. :)
! Research your purchase. Find out the truth about these overpriced machines 😎
I tend to agree... but there were no Chinese made bikes in this vid. These models are now sold under the Spanish brand, Rieju. They currently manufacture more than 12,000 motorcycles annually in their factory in Spain and export 85% of production to more than 40 countries. Possibly some parts are made in China? That's happening with many brands nowadays. 😢
