Double Bass Concerto No.2 in B minor Double Bass Excerpt Explained, Part I | Joseph Conyers

  • Known as the Paganini of the double bass, Bottesini made tremendous contributions to bass repertoire and technique. He was a virtuoso bass player, composer, and conductor, just like one of our other notable contributors, Serge Koussevitzky. Bottesini was most notably an opera conductor, which was a large influence on his compositions. Not only did he write some of his own operas, many of his bass show pieces are fantasies on themes from bel canto operas. Most often played by bass players, is his second concerto in B minor. While this concerto doesn’t feature any themes from opera, I use all of the previously mentioned information to interpret this piece. When I perform this piece, I want to emulate a singer, and take time and play with rubato the same way a singer would. Allegro moderato is the tempo of the first movement. Oftentimes this movement is played on the faster side, but I think the moderato part is important to take into consideration. Playing it on that side of tempo gives that flexibility and freedom with the phrasing. Although you can play this strictly in time and it would be technically correct, I don’t think that’s what the music calls for. In my personal opinion, and you may have heard me say this before, the technique is not the end goal. As artists, the bow, bass, music, etc. are merely the tools. It's what you do with those tools that makes the music, or the art special.

    Incredible music lesson! I love how you talk about music before talking about bass (and I'm a bassist!). Thank you for the quality and pure joy of music!

    I play mostly jazz (electric) bass & I’m starting my journey to get my classical playing up to par and it’s been very difficult but fun journey so far. Love your videos here and on Instagram. Love this piece and hope to perform it soon ❤️

    I like to play the first little passage Bravura, then the 2bd time you play the original melody I play it more melancholic like you suggest, I also start up bow and do agree that it should not be played too fast. Love your interpretation

    Was looking for the Conus violin concerto decided to hear his doubleBass concerto and found this ! Hope you visit Dragonetti 's better than average music also.I'll be looking for yourtalk on Kousevitsky's seldom heard concerto. Enjoyed your download. Correction "scordatura"in the 20th century it became common to write string music where violins and violas in solo literature as well as orchestral literature iare asked to change pitch of strings it's called scordatura. Heinrich Biber is getting a lot of attention recently and in 1674 his Rosary Sonatas used altered tunings for effect. I play violin and studied piano and orchestration so it's my business to know standard and contemporary performance standards . Orchestral scordatura is very common now and is heard most often in film scores !

    Did Bottesini's soloist works span about 3 to 5 years before he focused on Operas? Thanks for the lesson. That bass sounds so rich and full.

      That detail I don't know. Nevertheless, opera was in his DNA which still confirms my more bel canto approach to his music. Thanks for watching!

    Gerard Stroh***
    Hi Joseph Conyers!!!
    I been Praticing The Thumb Position on the Double Bass and It is Coming Along Well Slowly and it Feels Strange But I am Getting it***
    You Are Talking About Solo Tuning and I Would Have Trouble With That Tuning Because I Was Born With Perfit Pitch and I Cannot Use A Transposed Button on A Keyboard or A Digital Church Organ Because When I Hear A Note on the Piano it Sounds Like A C or D note or A Chord and it is Hard to Turn Off My Perfit Pitch and It Comes And Goes Joseph Conyers!!
    I also I Started on the Viola at the Age of 8 and That Was in the Year of 1969 and in 1975 I Desighted I Wanted to Take up the Double Bass and So it Happen An I Was Taking Lessons and I did that After School and The String Teacher Let Me Take the Double Home For the Summer and in September I was Playing it in Orchestra and the Rest Was History and Still Playing it***
    Bye From Gerard Stroh****

    When you play in solo tuning do you have to use different strings? Lighter gauge?

    • @gabrielkatzenmeier2655
      @gabrielkatzenmeier2655 ปีที่แล้ว

      Solo strings are used which have the bass be tuned to solo tuning.
