Nolte gave probably the best performance of the 1990s. A searing, towering piece of acting. The Globes got it right, and I think he was robbed of the Oscar, especially since Anthony Hopkins was clearly a supporting player.

Nolte also won L.A. Film Critics and Boston Film Critics. Hopkins wasn't only a supporting role, the entire Silence of the Lambs film was just campaigning.

I remember him playing Augusto Odone in Lorenzo's oil. He did such a wonderful job with that Italian accent I was nearly fooled at the time and of course a brilliant performance. I even thought his parents must been from Italy. Again, just to tell you guys he did a very good job.

So glad he won a prestigious award for his performance in The Prince of Tides and IMO he deserved the Oscar as well. but he beat Hopkins out in one of the two biggies. However, what bothered me the most was that Hopkins didn't really have that much screen time in Silence of the Lambs and shouldn't have been allowed to be up for actor but rather supporting actor for both the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards

    • @minavamp2811

even though anthony Hopkins did not have much screen time in the movie, but his character is essential to the story as equally as jodie foster character, and therefore he deserves to be in the leading category

Even here, his name got the loudest applause.
I saw Kevin Costner in "JFK", what an amazing performance.

I would actually rate Nick's performance after Anthony Hopkins and Kevin Costner's.

there is no rule for leading and supporting role base on screen time. that tells you how impactful Hopkins performance is. usually movie studios put lead performance in supporting category so they would have a better chance of winning, but not for Hopkins. every now and then you have performances that are so impactful with such short screen time like Hopkins and peter finch in network, that movie studios upgrade them to leading category knowing that they will have a good chance of winning,

How come the only award not shown from 1992 is Oliver Stone for Best Director for "JFK"? Is it because of "controversial" remarks he made? "A terrible lie was told to us 28 years ago. I hope that this film can be the first step in righting that wrong."
