I was disappointed with Director Lokesh for this movie as the film could have been cropped by 20 min and heroine shouldn't even have been there in the movie as she plays no role like kaithi no heroine.... But his vision towards cinema is next level really the Thalapathy vijay introduction in master was no less than a brad Pitt introduction with English songs and sleeping....!!!! And this is the first time I am seeing a villain get so much weightage and screen time for a mass hero south movie... Last time I saw was 2.0 rajini vs akshay...!!! Vijay sethupathy you rock 🙏🙏🙏

I think somes scenes are good on paper and failed in execution like lorry chase scene, and some emotional scenes like the student death n Andrea death does get much pay off as they seemed to fill some space before pre climax.
Even Adheera in KGF Chapter-2 is going to be one hell of a villain. Even Garuda was a better villain but with less screen time as there were more no of villains in part-1. Hope adheera gets more screen time.

I am a recent vijay convert after master ,really loved the film. The intro scene was so fresh and pulls you into the movie right away , vijay with his unkept hair and messy life was so charming to see , anirudh music was classy and apt for the sequence . Vijay's mannerisms and the sweet little lies he tells around was refreshing to see rather than sister sentiment😆 I really loved how he emoted for the sentimental scenes. Overall a better better film than sarkar ,kathi , even thupaki I would say in a Way . Stepped out of theater with vaathi coming steps 😆
BR's review of master is the best review of master in youtube, What ever they have done is amazing, because it transcends the regular vijay masala movie, but quite didn't make the cut.
Very nice film. As a vijay fan, I can still enjoy all elements in this film. Lokesh has made balance between vijay fans and his movie making style. Also, without any song, heroine sequences and some scene cuts, it will still be a very nice film.
We don't need a Vijay film, we need a director film with a quality content, automatically it would change into Vijay film. Vijay has potential to deliver what the director needs, there is no need to glorify his mass because he has already reached his place. If the story or the character is very strong then we have the shot! Vijay should compromise on fan moment scenes and leave this same typical commercial scenes. Hope Vijay and VetriMaaran combo happens soon. Wanna see real Vijay Raw Acting. About Master, Vijay looked Uber cool after Thuppaki, as usual charming acting my favourite scene jail outbreak, quit pannuda and the first meet of JD and Bhavani. Vjs rocked with his sarcastic acting could have shown him more evil. Coz Mahendiran acting created more hype on the character. Other than this 3 nothing much importance for other actor. Not a fan but true. The story has lot potential if they did include entertainment instead of random fight. Mr. Lokesh should also include entertainment instead of raw fight scenes and raw dialogues.

He is one of those few actors who hv a STAR factor as well as a performance oriented factor (depth in eyes) !! Just an underrated ACTOR reduced to a STAR image !! As a movie fan I would give 2.5/5 ...whoever edited the movie should have trimmed 20min atleast for a crisp screenplay..overall expected to be a blockbuster but an average affair.. special mention to anirudh fantastic bgm

A Director must stick with directors story rather than an Actor’s movie. He should not fall into Actor’s Circle. Director is the biggest Master not Actor. If this is Hollywood Director; he will not do this mistake. Always for a good film; story is Master; not Actor; In Kollywood; Actor is being spoiled by Fans Influence....this is why an Actor could not improve his career and just sticking with his comfort zone. Watch Kaithi; that is Director’s Film. A Director must not compromised his value to an Actor’s Fame.
Working with young directors is not important, but the stars should give at least some 6 months to write a proper screenplay. They announce and the shooting starts in some 1 month which is very less time. I personally feel Vikram will also not be great because again Lokesh has a unnecessary time restriction. Maanagaram remains his best even now, because he got time to write.
and another thing was MASTER was written by 3 writers ( Lokesh Anna, Rathna , and pon parthiban due to this time issue thats why Lokesh touch on the film is 20% like... if Lokesh was written this full script than 100% the story was powerful... still I like the film first half is gripping and in 2nd half I feel some down in screenplay .... lets see Vikram it would be best I guess
@@prasannar2520 no bro. Lokesh completed kaithi around end of may and was busy in its post production. He had only 2 months for scripting master and he also had to focus on its pre production parts... So I think scripting and pre production is the major problem in master ✌️ Just my pov 🙂
Honestly I feel only AR Murugadoss is capable of creating a convincing entertainer for Vijay as both Thuppakki and Kaththi were formulaic but they worked and ended up being a benchmark for a great Vijay film. Atlee just made Vijay so limited. Good attempt from Loki as we saw some refreshing stuff in Master
I think Murugadoss cracked it, but more than Thuppakki and Kaththi, Bigil was easily a better film, because Atlee took mass and a great message and meshed it together with a very underplayed Vijay

Was surprised with the placement of kutty story song . Despite the guys in the juvenile house asking “English aa” and master continues with words like “Crappy” , “self valuation” etc etc , it was so obvious that they just wanted to fit it in . Instead could have been used somewhere in the college scenes in the context of losing elections or motivating students there .
It's a 70:30 vijay- lokesh film. Everybody is telling it's an average entertainer, only because lokesh has given us MAANAGARAM and KAITHI. If u don't keep lokesh in mind and just watch the film , according to my opinion, this is the best commercial movie for Vijay after thuppakki. Lokesh has given us a well crafted commercial entertainer which has all the elements in right balance, which most of the directors fail to do , with a huge star cast.

The movie would be much better if the there is logic especially during lorries and arrows, remove unwanted songs. We are moving forward so please bear in mind movie need different content,grip and logic. Only a director know how difficult it is to maintain mass and logic but Lokesh sir, we more welcome a story which has your idea don't compromise your idea for the masses, time is transitioning so keep up to mark. Very cliché film. Was a bit disappointed. The same stuff over and over again. Expected a lot from Mr. Lokesh. He and his team deserve praise for their dedication level though... He is a talented guy for sure! No doubt. But still waiting for another Ghilli/Thuppakki.

Went to the movie expecting more from Loki- Enjoyed, but disappointed... The film managed to engage the vijay fan within me. But as cinema fan i have a huge respect towards Loki, and his work in master was not upto the mark. Don't know why!!! Bcoz they just gave him some 2-3 months to develop the script??? Yeah, but still the movie was definitely not a mindless masala entertainer. It has a clear(😉) Protaganist... a strong antoganist... But the problem is those stuffs that happens in between these two. Lokesh Kanagaraj's 50/50 formula was not upto the mark... Waiting for that 100% Loki anna film for Thalapathy... As of now, Master was definitely one time watchable

Feels like Rathnakumar and the other person wrote most of the scenes, leaving very little for loki to come up with. Andrea's archery scene, jd's friends gang, shanthanu and kutty story were completed unnecessary and extended the time limit of the film. Bd says Vijay is actually portraying a character, rather than being himself, and I disagree with this too.this ranks among vj's best acting performances but the character jd wasn't powerful enough. No-one can recover an alcohol addiction that quick. As a Vijay fan, I loved this film. As a loki fan, expected better.

I don't think star value overrides storytelling. This is one movie in which vijay's character was underplayed to a major extent. people like that kid poovayaar are allowed to have more screens space and have been given more weightage than vijay in all the scenes poovayaar is part of. One other guy is allowed to softly troll vijay whoever he sleeps. These are the scenes which made the otherwise lengthier movie watchable and makes for a pleasant viewing experience. Also das was given equal screen presence and weight age in his role .his characterisation in the final scene could have been filmed better as he was shown as a laughable character making the final comedy. Even that was enjoyable but given his strong role and the power he has in his voice that final scene could have been better. Shantanu,ramya,Andrea,Sanjeev were not reqd at all.

The most powerful lesson from Vaathi: Directors with unique cinematic signatures should never pair with pure commercial heroes. The result will always be underwhelming. Also see Kaala, Kabali.
Kabali was atleast watchable even if it was too slow a movie to sit patiently and watch .Leaving aside too many unwanted side characters n villains the movie was good. But in kaala ranjith exposed his casteist mindset .his true intentions . People tolerated it just for Rajini. No wonder he is out of work for 3 years since then .Rajini is one person whose movie everyone loves to watch in theatre People of all community and religion ,of all ages (under 8 to 80 years of age )love to watch his movies in theatre. Ranjith took rajini for granted. Ranjith cannot ridicule people who do not belong to his community in his films just to show his community in good light which obviously isn't. People who do not belong to other community who come to watch kaala won't tolerate being ridiculed and shown in bad light. Ranjith forgot that people come to theater for Rajini and not for him. You can be a James cameroon but at the end of the day ,the movie will be sold as a rajini movie and people will watch it for Rajinikanth . Many who were watching kaala were seen making comments that had it not been Rajini ,kaala is a crap movie. Hope ranjith is ignored completely and go into oblivion

One thing that Lokesh struggles with in all his movies is the pacing, he does not have control of pacing sometimes, i think its because of his freestyle way of filmaking, but still if he can find a way to structure his pacing in his screenplay with his out of the box ideas, he will truly go long way as a filmaker.
Good to see your opinion brother, we have to give great appreciation to Vijay, who acts as a character play rather than as Thalabathi like his previous films. If people do not celebrate this kind of film, we couldn't get experimental concepts from Vijay. it depends brother, but as a fanatic boy, I visually enjoy the film like anything, because I expect to see a Vijay film like this.

Master is a really good movie, not a great one. Vijay finally got a role in which he can perform. The length of the film is the only issue I had with the film. Vijay Sethupathi as usual killed it. Lokesh should have just made the movie without the heroine, heroine moved the story but any other character could have done the same job. The concept, ideas, cinematography, the setup are great, the story felt a bit laggy and the whole college segment feels unnecessary.
To be honest Not really a movie we expected from lokesh given his movie making...to satisfy both vjs screen space n fans he has compromised the storyline
I watched Master on Prime Video yesterday and came here to check Baradwaj's review. I fully enjoyed the movie, it's one of the most massy Vijay movies in recent times. Vijay Sethupathi also has a really strong character background and not just your regular villain who will be there for just hero's punches. The BGM from Anirudh adds another layer of energy to the movie. Kutti Story,Vaathi Coming and Vaathi Raid are the highlights of the soundtrack for me. There is something in Anirudh's composition that even non-Tamil speakers love his music. Malavika Mohanan had a very very small role without any romantic track added to the movie, it feels like Master could have done without any heroine in it. The only complaint I have is that the runtime is very long. It should have been trimmed by 20-30 minutes. For a Thalapathy fan, the movie is just full of mass entertainment which was kind of lacking in his few previous movies.
Disagree with you for the "kutty story" song. Right before that song, a small guy asks JD for whats the meaning of "Celebration". Considering that, how can be that song written completely using English words? No point!

Honestly speaking,I was having very heavy expectations on Master.I have been doing research seeing interviews and keeping in touch for all the tiny buzzes about Master for quiet sometime.I understood that Lokesh attempted to show Vijay in a different shade this time,I understood that Master would be a balance for mass and class,and others way before this film released.I had high expectations and expected a lot from this film.I was not afraid of having these expectations.I am a die hard fan of Vijay.I've seen all his works and observed his infectious energy,his mass style,his action and dance.No offense,but he literally had the capacity to carry a poor story like Sivakasi.And here,the film was written and directed by Lokesh.I watched his directed films before and observed his style of direction.He is an inspiration to me. Finally when I watched this movie,I was overwhelmed with joy,as Master proved my faith and hope on this film.Lokesh really broke norms,and he gave each character the perfect amount of screen time and importance they deserved in terms of how important they are for JD and Bhavani clashing.After reading the negative reviews,I feel the defending answer to the criticism is that this film focuses on the clash between JD and Bhavani,nothing else!Each character was given appropriate amounts of screen space and importance,which makes Master a flawless film.This film will not suit the types of audience who want a package..Of many elements..South Indian Cinema has revolved around the concept of delivering package films for so many years that the blinded audience has failed to comprehend that those films are actually dragged films,sometimes illogical with screenplay quality severely low when compared to foreign filmmakers.This has become a stereotype and almost a rule to be followed which is bravely broken by Master. Speaking of the film and story itself,it's an absolute thriller,layered with appropriate amounts of elements mass and class.Master was very enjoyable and definitely the type of film where you can take many lessons from.Master should turn into a cult classic and remembered for generations to come.Lokesh has done absolute justice for his love to Kollywood,and the fact that Vijay has stepped forward to make this movie proves he is the biggest superstar of Mass industry.

The scene where vijay sethupathy mockingly makes a horn like thing with shampoo , is one of the best things that i hv seen !! But it is not a 50 percent LOKESH MOVIE , may be 30 percent !! Vijay had great acting skills. Like you said the letter scene and also the basketball court scene in pokkiri. The way he confronts that police officer and the arrogant portrayal is all mass. But I don't know why no director is interested in exploring his acting skills.beneath all the masala action etc there is an actor hidden within him which needs to be bought out
People complaining about this movie, knowing fully well that it’s a Vijay movie let alone a commercial movie... cmon what do you expect, enjoy it for what it is and it’s far better then any other recent commercial movies. Stop this nonsense of the term Vijay film.. there is nothing called such! Every Vijay Fan loved to see him in varied roles, story and scripts.. We loved Mersal' Vetrimaaran, Bigil' Rayappan, Kaththi' Jeevanantham, and Thupakki Jagdeesh.. of course we liked Maaran & Vetri, Kathiresan which had some uniqueness! Also the Theri' Smart Cop + lovable Husband/Father role... There is nothing called a Vijay film and we only to see Vijay in good films shouldered by his superb performance .

Creative film makers of new age should keep writing stories in free form without any heroes in mind. And then if the mass heroes likes the screen play of creators and then can join hands but without any changes to the original script. There can be room for about ten percent of changes in the making, cinematography etc. Besides, the heroes can bring in their mass factor as they deliver the dialogues and their individual acting style to enhance their mass quotient but not in the screen play or written dialogues of the script. Unfortunately, it happens in the reverse order. No good screen play or story should be written for mass heroes to begin with and that will heavily affect the creativity of directors. A creator should be given full liberty when it comes to his/her story at their writing phase.

I am a recent vijay convert after master ,really loved the film.
The intro scene was so fresh and pulls you into the movie right away , vijay with his unkept hair and messy life was so charming to see , anirudh music was classy and apt for the sequence .
Vijay's mannerisms and the sweet little lies he tells around was refreshing to see rather than sister sentiment😆
I really loved how he emoted for the sentimental scenes.
Overall a better better film than sarkar ,kathi , even thupaki I would say in a Way . Stepped out of theater with vaathi coming steps 😆

Very nice film. As a vijay fan, I can still enjoy all elements in this film. Lokesh has made balance between vijay fans and his movie making style. Also, without any song, heroine sequences and some scene cuts, it will still be a very nice film.
We don't need a Vijay film, we need a director film with a quality content, automatically it would change into Vijay film. Vijay has potential to deliver what the director needs, there is no need to glorify his mass because he has already reached his place. If the story or the character is very strong then we have the shot!
Vijay should compromise on fan moment scenes and leave this same typical commercial scenes.

About Master, Vijay looked Uber cool after Thuppaki, as usual charming acting my favourite scene jail outbreak, quit pannuda and the first meet of JD and Bhavani. Vjs rocked with his sarcastic acting could have shown him more evil. Coz Mahendiran acting created more hype on the character. Other than this 3 nothing much importance for other actor. Could have done the 2nd half better.

A Director must stick with directors story rather than an Actor’s movie. He should not fall into Actor’s Circle. Director is the biggest Master not Actor. If this is Hollywood Director; he will not do this mistake. Always for a good film; story is Master; not Actor; In Kollywood; Actor is being spoiled by Fans Influence....this is why an Actor could not improve his career and just sticking with his comfort zone. Watch Kaithi; that is Director’s Film. A Director must not compromised his value to an Actor’s Fame.

Working with young directors is not important, but the stars should give at least some 6 months to write a proper screenplay. They announce and the shooting starts in some 1 month which is very less time. I personally feel Vikram will also not be great because again Lokesh has a unnecessary time restriction. Maanagaram remains his best even now, because he got time to write.

Honestly I feel only AR Murugadoss is capable of creating a convincing entertainer for Vijay as both Thuppakki and Kaththi were formulaic but they worked and ended up being a benchmark for a great Vijay film.

Was surprised with the placement of kutty story song . Despite the guys in the juvenile house asking “English aa” and master continues with words like “Crappy” , “self valuation” etc etc , it was so obvious that they just wanted to fit it in . Instead could have been used somewhere in the college scenes in the context of losing elections or motivating students there .

It's a 70:30 vijay- lokesh film. Everybody is telling it's an average entertainer, only because lokesh has given us MAANAGARAM and KAITHI. If u don't keep lokesh in mind and just watch the film , according to my opinion, this is the best commercial movie for Vijay after thuppakki. Lokesh has given us a well crafted commercial entertainer which has all the elements in right balance, which most of the directors fail to do , with a huge star cast.

The film managed to engage the vijay fan within me. But as cinema fan i have a huge respect towards Loki, and his work in master was not upto the mark. Don't know why!!! Bcoz they just gave him some 2-3 months to develop the script??? Yeah, but still the movie was definitely not a mindless masala entertainer. It has a clear(😉) Protaganist... a strong antoganist... But the problem is those stuffs that happens in between these two. Lokesh Kanagaraj's 50/50 formula was not upto the mark... Waiting for that 100% Loki anna film for Thalapathy... This is why directors should be given sufficient time to write the script. I'm pretty sure loki would've come up with a stronger script if time permitted. Feels like Rathnakumar and the other person wrote most of the scenes, leaving very little for loki to come up with. Andrea's archery scene, jd's friends gang, shanthanu and kutty story were completed unnecessary and extended the time limit of the film. Bd says Vijay is actually portraying a character, rather than being himself, and I disagree with this too.this ranks among vj's best acting performances but the character jd wasn't powerful enough. No-one can recover an alcohol addiction that quick. As a Vijay fan, I loved this film. As a loki fan, expected better.

I don't think star value overrides storytelling. This is one movie in which vijay's character was underplayed to a major extent. people like that kid poovayaar are allowed to have more screens space and have been given more weightage than vijay in all the scenes poovayaar is part of.

The most powerful lesson from Vaathi: Directors with unique cinematic signatures should never pair with pure commercial heroes. The result will always be underwhelming. Also see Kaala, Kabali.

One thing that Lokesh struggles with in all his movies is the pacing, he does not have control of pacing sometimes, i think its because of his freestyle way of filmaking, but still if he can find a way to structure his pacing in his screenplay with his out of the box ideas, he will truly go long way as a filmaker.

Master is a really good movie, not a great one. Vijay finally got a role in which he can perform. The length of the film is the only issue I had with the film. Vijay Sethupathi as usual killed it. Lokesh should have just made the movie without the heroine, heroine moved the story but any other character could have done the same job.
The concept, ideas, cinematography, the setup are great, the story felt a bit laggy and the whole college segment feels unnecessary.

I watched Master on Prime Video yesterday and came here to check Baradwaj's review. I fully enjoyed the movie, it's one of the most massy Vijay movies in recent times. Vijay Sethupathi also has a really strong character background and not just your regular villain who will be there for just hero's punches. The BGM from Anirudh adds another layer of energy to the movie. Kutti Story,Vaathi Coming and Vaathi Raid are the highlights of the soundtrack for me. There is something in Anirudh's composition that even non-Tamil speakers love his music. Malavika Mohanan had a very very small role without any romantic track added to the movie, it feels like Master could have done without any heroine in it. The only complaint I have is that the runtime is very long. It should have been trimmed by 20-30 minutes. For a Thalapathy fan, the movie is just full of mass entertainment which was kind of lacking in his few previous movies.
Disagree with you for the "kutty story" song. Right before that song, a small guy asks JD for whats the meaning of "Celebration". Considering that, how can be that song written completely using English words? No point!

Honestly speaking,I was having very heavy expectations on Master.I have been doing research seeing interviews and keeping in touch for all the tiny buzzes about Master for quiet sometime.I understood that Lokesh attempted to show Vijay in a different shade this time,I understood that Master would be a balance for mass and class,and others way before this film released.I had high expectations and expected a lot from this film.I was not afraid of having these expectations.I am a die hard fan of Vijay.I've seen all his works and observed his infectious energy,his mass style,his action and dance.No offense,but he literally had the capacity to carry a poor story like Sivakasi.And here,the film was written and directed by Lokesh.I watched his directed films before and observed his style of direction.He is an inspiration to me.
Finally when I watched this movie,I was overwhelmed with joy,as Master proved my faith and hope on this film.Lokesh really broke norms,and he gave each character the perfect amount of screen time and importance they deserved in terms of how important they are for JD and Bhavani clashing.After reading the negative reviews,I feel the defending answer to the criticism is that this film focuses on the clash between JD and Bhavani,nothing else!Each character was given appropriate amounts of screen space and importance,which makes Master a flawless film.This film will not suit the types of audience who want a package..Of many elements..South Indian Cinema has revolved around the concept of delivering package films for so many years that the blinded audience has failed to comprehend that those films are actually dragged films,sometimes illogical with screenplay quality severely low when compared to foreign filmmakers.This has become a stereotype and almost a rule to be followed which is bravely broken by Master.
Speaking of the film and story itself,it's an absolute thriller,layered with appropriate amounts of elements mass and class.Master was very enjoyable and definitely the type of film where you can take many lessons from.Master should turn into a cult classic and remembered for generations to come.Lokesh has done absolute justice for his love to Kollywood,and the fact that Vijay has stepped forward to make this movie proves he is the biggest superstar of Mass industry.
What if suriya or any other big star in master you would have said that it didn't meet the expectation but for Vijay it's not the case ! 👍

The scene where Vijay takes out the letter from his pocket , reads it and simultaneously breaks down is by far the most powerful acting performance by Vijay ! The scene where vijay sethupathy mockingly makes a horn like thing with shampoo , is one of the best things that i hv seen !! But it is not a 50 percent LOKESH MOVIE , may be 30 percent !!

Vijay had great acting skills. Like you said the letter scene and also the basketball court scene in pokkiri. The way he confronts that police officer and the arrogant portrayal is all mass. But I don't know why no director is interested in exploring his acting skills.beneath all the masala action etc there is an actor hidden within him which needs to be bought out

After long time I see a long review time for this movie., it’s because of the director I think but all actors at end wants the movie to be on them but not on directors. Atllee is one for Vijay as he can copy all old stories and say that it’s his own story even though by watching you can make it obvious the copy directly. I liked the review as usual.

Not at all, it's not just a cliched movie, ofc it has cliches , but not thematically or conceptually, but in the way , they were staged. The duration isn't in perfect balance, but Lokesh went for a higher turn, it is a good movie , not great, but atleast good.

This review is much better than the film. Love and respect Mr BR, from bengal. Your words mean a lot and your approach to film criticism is impeccable, unique, lucid and different. Yeah, a thesis sounds better than a review.
This is why directors should be given sufficient time to write the script. I'm pretty sure loki would've come up with a stronger script if time permitted. Feels like Rathnakumar and the other person wrote most of the scenes, leaving very little for loki to come up with. Andrea's archery scene, jd's friends gang, shanthanu and kutty story were completed unnecessary and extended the time limit of the film. Bd says Vijay is actually portraying a character, rather than being himself, and I disagree with this too.this ranks among vj's best acting performances but the character jd wasn't powerful enough. No-one can recover an alcohol addiction that quick. As a Vijay fan, I loved this film. As a loki fan, expected better.

We loved Mersal' Vetrimaaran, Bigil' Rayappan, Kaththi' Jeevanantham, and Thupakki Jagdeesh.. of course we liked Maaran & Vetri, Kathiresan which had some uniqueness! Also the Theri' Smart Cop + lovable Husband/Father role... There is nothing called a Vijay film and we only to see Vijay in good films shouldered by his superb performance .

This is the starting point for Vijay acting in non commercial movies and it actually works well.its just that Lokesh had the pressure that he is the first director to make a non commercial movie for Vijay with less mass scenes and more story based scenes so he experimented it and actually did it even though he didn't get it to the top he didn't fail that. so great job Lokesh👍.Nice movie master.oru refreshing aana Vijay movie

Creative film makers of new age should keep writing stories in free form without any heroes in mind. And then if the mass heroes likes the screen play of creators and then can join hands but without any changes to the original script. There can be room for about ten percent of changes in the making, cinematography etc. Besides, the heroes can bring in their mass factor as they deliver the dialogues and their individual acting style to enhance their mass quotient but not in the screen play or written dialogues of the script. Unfortunately, it happens in the reverse order. No good screen play or story should be written for mass heroes to begin with and that will heavily affect the creativity of directors. A creator should be given full liberty when it comes to his/her story at their writing phase.
Finally, one genuine review !
50 percent Lokesh and 50 percent Vijay because of that we have not fully satisfied..if it was 100 percent lokesh or 100 percent Vijay film then it would been a masterpiece
