    As a systems architect and a computer room at home stuffed full of Apple kit, I have to admit I did not know about some of these settings. Watched about six of your videos now, one after the other, very intuitive, informative and enjoyable vlogs. Favourite unknown so far; scanning text straight into Notes. So many features that Apple never publicly announce so well done you. 👍

    I searched Google to find out how to get the keyboard back to “normal“. Not only did you refresh my memory on that, but you demonstrated lots of things I had never figured out in 7 or 8 years of using an iPads and iPhones. Believe me when I say this is the VERY BEST how-to video I have ever seen on TH-cam, and I have watched many, many of them. I am now subscribed to your presentations and have copied links so my Apple/Mac friends can find you. Thanks for being so clear and thorough!

      That's great to hear, thanks so much! And there's plenty more coming in the next few months (especially with all of the Apple software updates due in the coming weeks)

    Great tips. Thanks. I've been using Silence Unknown Callers for over a year and it changed my life. I get calls from dozens of unknown callers every day and they are no longer a disruption. If it's someone who really needs to reach me, they will leave a voicemail. I do get a banner notification when one comes in but that's a minor distraction and gives me the option of picking up the call.

      Great to hear from someone who uses it and has a good experience. The number of junk calls I receive has increased, so it might be something I begin to use.

    Outstanding video. All these features are well known by me and I cannot stress how important app tracking & privacy are. Everybody should follow your example and revoke those apps from having access.

    • @ProperHonestTech
      @ProperHonestTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I was stunned by how many apps I'd granted way more access to than I should have when I was researching for this video. I reckon at least 99% of people don't realise how much they're willingly sharing.

    Great video, I really appreciate the positive way you explain it. One question: Silence unknown callers is great - but then I always get a "Class 0 text message" notifying me an unknown caller called me.... - how can I disable "Class 0 text message" notifications as well?

    Thank you for this tutorial. What you’ve said makes perfect sense & certainly opened my eyes to some unfounded myths.
    You didn’t mention anything about charging iPhone whilst still encased in a full cover which is what I have, & what I do. My iPhone case is also usually stocked with cards of one kinds or another. Would appreciate your opinion about this. Thanks.

    • @ProperHonestTech
      @ProperHonestTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      My suggestion would be to let the phone charge in it's case for a little while, then remove it from the case and touch the back of it, see how hot it gets. If it's uncomfortable to the touch, then remove it from it's case when charging it in the future. Some cases are much better at passing the heat away than others are, but essentially, it can be like putting a winter jacket on your phone while it's charging. Prolonged heat and lithium ion batteries are not a good combination.

    I've been struggling for some time in keeping up with helpful videos on TH-cam and only just realized that that the thing to do is to pause the video when the item in question (on the phone) in settings is announced and having found it, restart the video to hear the advice. This might seem painfully obvious to you but you should be aware that there are lots of oldies like me whose first encounter with a PC was in their sixties and are hence entirely self taught. I am now eighty-five and love the internet and all it has to offer, In fact I am distraught when a daytime brown-out occurs and we get lots of them in the Philippines. Sorry, I'm rambling, so getting to the point, I think some of your older viewers might appreciate my Tip

    Enabling Erase Data after 10 password attempts is safer than one might think if you have kids. After a few initial failed attempts, the phone locks out for a few minutes before allowing more attempts. Then after a few more unsuccessful attempts, it locks out for a couple hours. And by the tenth attempt, its been 3-1/2 hours. So its unlikely kids will still be playing with it.

    Speaking of charging iPhone batteries, if you want to or need to charge them safe and fast I would definitely advise not charging above 80% and keeping phone battery below 45%. The reason here is you definitely don’t want to damage your battery. If you want to charge your phone battery fast, do not use a fast charger. This will damage battery because of current flow of electricity. The best way I can think of for charging your phone fast is by silencing notifications (to prevent your phone from turning on and off), turning off Wi-Fi and cellular (not necessarily turning on airplane mode), lowering screen brightness to fullest extent, turning on dark mode and low power mode, disabling Bluetooth, closing all apps (primarily safari, and high quality graphic games since they drain battery most), and keeping the device in a cool climate. There is more though that I do know, but I’d rather keep it short since I find this way the safest way to preserve battery life. I forgot to mention that charging overnight is definitely not a good idea (which is what I don’t do).

    • @the_djake563
      @the_djake563 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Charging your phone to 100% and discharging below a certain point doesn’t damage the battery, nor does using fast chargers (at least Apple Certified ones).
      What damages batteries the most is heat. Heavy load on a phone whilst charging could cause too much heat, depending on the use case. I believe iPhones now and certain Androids will slow down charging when the battery goes within a certain thermal window anyway.
      Truth is, batteries will always die and you as the consumer shouldn’t need to manage your battery and your device to preserve its life. So just use the phone as you wish and replace the battery if needed in the future.

    • @Mohammad_Ali__
      @Mohammad_Ali__ ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@the_djake563 I agree with the facts you have stated. But there’s another problem that has to also be mentioned when the device gets to battery management. Managing the flow of electricity at a certain current in which the battery is being charged at is important.
      In some countries, a charging converter needs to be used. The issue here is some converters though, don’t have the ability to lower the current in order to keep the battery in a healthy state. So basically it’s not just temperature, but it is also where the source of how electric current flows from/to in certain areas.

    Question: is it safe to store passwords in Notes?

    • @ProperHonestTech
      @ProperHonestTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not particularly. Depends on the security of your phone in general I guess. Do you use Face or Touch ID on the phone? Passcode protect? If not, a stolen phone would mean all your passwords are compromised. I’d recommend using iCloud Keychain or a 3rd party password app.

    Hi ! in Cellular Data Options What About Data Roaming ? Do We On or Off for Security ?

    • @ProperHonestTech
      @ProperHonestTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Data Roaming has no bearing on your security. It simply means that, when switched on, your phone will continue to access mobile data, if you're in a country other than your home country. If you travel, and your carrier doesn't allow you to use your phone plan overseas (ie; you'll get a hefty charge if you access mobile data abroad), then switch this off before you travel.

    • @ProperHonestTech
      @ProperHonestTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should absolutely be able to do this. Tracking is allowing the app to view your activity OUTSIDE of the TV station app. Essentially, it's to help better understand you as a consumer, to understand how to market to you. Location services will probably be required for the TV station app for while you're viewing it. Switch tracking off and try accessing your content, I'm almost certain it will work fine. (if it doesn't, you can always switch it back on in the settings).

    I just noticed that there is a contradiction between the advice, on the same subject, from two experts. A few minute ago, I was watching a similar advice programme from Payette Forward, and their advice was just the opposite to yours. They say that we shouldn't close down apps we're not using, because if we do, it is using more battery to get them running when needed than it does to just leave them on.
    My question is. to both parties, how come the difference in advice about the same thing, from two/three experts. I cannot think they are both correct, because that would be impossible. I respectfully look forward to a reply from both sides.

      Where in this video have I advised you to close down apps you're not using? Timestamp please, because the advice that I give people is the same as the Payette guys, and I'm absolutely certain that I've not contradicted that in this video.

      @@ProperHonestTech My very sincerest apology, PHT. I typed a message to Payette, then copied and pasted that message to you, after making appropriate changes to the wording, but I obviously changed that section incorrectly. It was Payette Forward who said to close down apps not being used. You said it's best to leave them running.
      I am 86 and do make mistakes. I am very glad you answered my comment so quickly, which gave me the opportunity to quickly and publicly correct my error.
      I hope this is satisfactory to you.
      If so, and my question now makes sense, I would appreciate any reply you make to that question.
      To be honest, I very much enjoyed your advice on phone matters, because it was very clear and easy to follow. So it leaves just that one question. I haven't seen an answer from the other side, yet.
      I hope you will accept my apology for that serious mistake.

      Apologies to you, PHT. It was Payette Forward who said we should close down our apps when not using them. You, PHT, said we shouldn't.

      Thanks for your comment - in terms of why I advocate leaving apps running in the background, you can read a comment from Apple's own SVP here. 9to5mac.com/2016/03/10/should-you-quit-ios-apps-answer/

      Essentially, Force Quit (which is the function you're referring to) is, by Apple's own admission, supposed to be used only when apps hang or become unresponsive. The phone is otherwise designed to manage battery life sufficiently well enough, without you having to close down apps. As for the Payette guys - they're two very smart guys who know the IPhone extremely well, and I'm sure they have their reason/justification for claiming the opposite, or perhaps it's an older video, and they're working from older beliefs/info?

    focus mode are an horrible and paternalistic function that impede me from having a proper and automatable silence mode.
    not a surprise that greatest fans of this mess are all in secondary school.

    I have a 16 digit code on my iPhone. 4-6 digits can easily be hacked with gadgets hackers can use. I watched a video about it last year and now have a more security.

    I am getting a bit overwhelmed here with iphone in hand and pausing the video. I need to get back to basics, do you have a "getting to know you" for the iphone? I do not even know how to download an app. Embarrassing or not? BTW I have been an iphone user for eight years, I am ashamed of myself.

      Don't be embarrassed; most of us only know what we need to know so there's always opportunities to learn and TH-cam is the place for tbat! This guide is prolly too advanced for you, I agree. I can't see that he has done a basic guide but I'm sure you will find plenty on TH-cam for your exact model. Good luck 😀

    Putting all your passwords on an external server you dont have any control on doesn’t seem a very smart thing to do.

    Your instructions are way to fast……

      The majority of comments that I receive from people state that the instructions are paced correctly. If I talk slower, people will complain that I'm talking too slowly. Do remember that you can adjust the speed on TH-cam using the cog button to make the video slower, or watch parts of it again.
