    This is awesome. My great great grandfather was Henry Taylor, a Romani Gypsy who is documented as being involved with some Birmingham gangs back in the early 1900s. My grandfather never knew his family, his dad left when my grandfather was born. My grandfathers mother passed away giving birth so he was eventually adopted and moved to America under a different name. He did a ton of genealogy and family tree digging to find out who his family was over the years. Tons of really cool stuff. My great great great grandfather (Henry's father) was a full blown Romani. Hung around Black Patch Park in Birmingham with other families such as the Boswell's, Hearn's, Lee's and Gray's. My grandfather has pages of documented stuff that he's found over the years.

    I can personally confirm this. I was born in Bulgaria in 2000 and was adopted to Denmark as a kid. I took a DNA test a few months back and my results were quite typical for a roma/gypsie. 50% Indian, about 30% Greek and approximately 15% Balkan as well as a few small chunks divided into Italy, Spain, Ashkenazi Jewish etc. - This march I travelled to Bulgaria to find my biological family and after only a few hours of searching in the town that was described in my adoption papers, we found a very friendly couple that helped us search for our biological parents (later it would be revealed that the guy was my cousin). Later when we found my mother, father and 11 siblings I talked to them about their origin since there aren't many good sources for information regarding their origin. My biological mother told me that there is a story that one mothers tells to her daughter and carries from generation to generation. It is about their ancestors and how they were the low social class in India about 10.000 years ago. Many lived from farming but at some point they ran out of 'ressources'. (I don't know what she meant and I thought it was best not to ask more about it). Therefore some decided to travel. Some split on their way and therefore some went to the eastern side of Africa. In many countries they were welcomed and some were later 'expelled' - she couldn't quite tell me why but I believe there had been some kind of conflict. Appearently this made them very introverted.. They are very proud and are absolutely loving, talented musically and will do everything for their families - even if it means stealing from others (though it should be noted that some don't - especially if they have work). For some they can appear cold and ungrateful but she thought that it maybe was because some had felt decieved or/and betrayed many years ago *another note: They were treated the same ways as jews, but by some reason they are rarely mentioned in history contexts*. I didn't quite get it all since I had a translator with me and he couldn't understand everything that they were saying because bulgarian is their 2nd language and they had another accent. She also said that, that for them it is considered a myth and simply a good story to tell their children, so she couldn't comfirm anything since no one has written it down. She said that it is because their language is only a spoken language. They don't use letters or writing in general.. Therefore it is also quite typical for them to be dyslexic even though they are very smart. Personally, I've never had any trouble reading or anything, but many of my siblings in Bulgaria were dyslexic. I told her about my DNA test and I guess it confirms her story. If anyone is adopted and believe they come from a roma family or have any questions, you are more than welcome to contact me on my E-mail address: michaelfrsig@gmail.com

    Two years ago, when the Roma (Gypsy) Taxi driver in Bucharest to my amazement almost understood my conversation with my wife in the native tongue of Rajasthan, a north western state in India, I decided to work on this and find out how.

    Since the Taxi Driver understood the language of Rajasthan, I went through the history of Rajasthan or Rajputana as it was originally called and discovered that there was a huge exodus of the tired soldiers of the army of great Rajput King Prithviraj Chauhan around 1050 AD who ,as the history says, fought 17 wars with Mohammed Ghauri. Most left with women folks leaving empty villages. Most Roma belong to the fine Rajput warrior caste and others were farmers called Jat who also were in the army.

    While the great king was keen on continuing battles, many soldiers did not want to fight more wars and stayed at home. For a Rajput staying at home during war was a stigma. They were taunted for staying home at the time of war.

    Therefore, as a folk song of Rajasthan says, they left their native land in groups. They left from no other part of India. Some went west and are called Gypsies or Roma now and some went down to south India where they still are in their red and yellow color clothes and with huge mustache. You can see them on google by clicking "Lambada in south India". I am from Rajasthan but live in south Indian city of Hyderabad and hence see Lambadas daily.

    I was further shocked again when our Gypsy (Lambada) maid mostly understood an old Hungarian Roma lady talking in Romani about Nazi atrocities on a BBC program on TV while I understood it by reading the English captions. Apparently, the two ladies 9000 miles away now spoke same language spoken about 1000 years ago in their land of origin. We being from Rajasthan still use many of their words.

    On the way to west, Roma took words from Persian like bibi and many other tongues including Greek (drost for road) and from Armenian and so on. Also, few joined them on the way from Sindh, another Indian province,now in Pakistan. They are still called Sinti within Roma and words like laklo, lakli, chavo are from Sindhi.

    They somehow lost their surnames of fine Rajput warrior clans. Roma may try to find surnames like Sisodia, Chauhan , Shekhawat, Nainavat Rathore, etc. But they kept first Indian names until 19th century like Amos Bihari and his daughter Panna Cinkova , both great Roma musicians from Hungary. Panna meaning Emerald is a pure Rajasthani name not used in other parts of India. You may look in Google for "Panna Cinka ". If they were not Indians, why otherwise would they have Indian names in Europe in the year 1711?

    Today Roma use many of the words from Rajasthani ( or Marwari) and Hindi, both of Sanskrit origin. Few are ek do trin nak(nose) bal(hair)angusth(finger) bersh(year) diwas(day) sassu sussro ( mother and father in law, from rajasthani) saalo Sali (brother and sister in law from Rajasthani) chora(boy) chori(girl) cior(chor, meaning thief)) gia sov, thalle, upral purano ( old ), dukh, kasht, tato, langhal(lame) maang, des, lajja and so on. About half are from Rajasthani and Hindi both of which originate from Sanskrit. I know hundreds. There are thousands. Luis Mori, another Roma has sent me a huge list of Romani words which I match with my Roma maid's vocabulary. Sometimes grammar has changed to European style, like we would say sov gia and Roma would say gia sov. Same meaning though. Has slept.
    Also, all Indian languages including today's Rajasthani has two yous, one for Junior and one for senior. Romani and the language of Lambada even today have only one you which is "tu" used for Juniors and for very close ones which must have been so 1000 years ago.

    Romani words are from pre-Muslim era in India and hence pure Sanskrit like hiv(him in Sanskrit) for snow or ice is used while we in India now say barf which is Persian. Please go to the following in TH-cam to see more. “Romani an Indian lost Language”(th-cam.com/video/UJvn7nLeZaI/w-d-xo.html) by Adriano, an Italian Roma from whom I have learned much and also“Roma girl from Kosovo goes to India.....”(th-cam.com/video/q6HfenInNEA/w-d-xo.html)

    All Roma had mustache which was necessary for Rajput warriors. Purity codes of Roma were till recently practiced in India like Roma breaking the plate if animal licked it. My mother used to give the plates to beggars if our dog ever licked it even once. Also, food once served on table but not eaten does not go back to Fridge or saved for eating later. That is why death rate within Roma during great European plague was so low as claimed by scholars.

    Roma had also carried our proverbs like "while choosing a daughter in law, believe your ears more than eyes” meaning reputation of the girl's family was more important than her beauty. Another common proverb is "If the road is crooked, you can't walk straight."

    Roma eventually lost their religion, quite understandably but Sara kali of southern France is a Hindu deity of Goddess kali favourite of Rajputs. The deity is immersed in water body every year like we do in India. The Vatican has not recognized this deity as it has no link to Christianity. Romani also has an unusual word"trishul" from Sanskrit and Hindi meaning a spear with three fingers. This spear is associated with Hindu God Mahadev or Shiva and the war cry of Rajputs Regiment in India till today is " Har har Mahadev".

    Please see on You tube "Dr. Ian Hancock: Keynote Address at Romani Studies Conference, UC Berkeley" (th-cam.com/video/NTsqiP196Uw/w-d-xo.html). Dr. Hancock who is a Roma makes very scholastic analysis of Romani history from European side. He successfully dismantles myths like Roma are old Jews or from Egypt or came from within the earth. He establishes that Roma indeed came from India.However he has not said much about which part of India are they from and which language from India they speak. He only mentions "Indian Language" while there is nothing like Indian Language. We have hundreds of languages. India had hundreds of independent kingdoms. Rajputana, as Rajasthan was called then had many kingdoms too. Prithviraj Chauhan was the king of Ajmer in central Rajasthan from whose army Roma came.

    He also links Romani with Sanskrit while truth is that Romani has words from Rajasthani and Hindi alone both of which originate from Sanskrit. Romani is made of languages which have Sanskrit base and directly from Sanskrit. There are many many words in Romani which none else from India except those from Rajasthan will understand like tato meaning hot . He also says Roma are Doms who burn dead bodies which is certainly not true. Doms live about 1000 miles away from Rajasthan and are dark skinned.

    Many Roma have come to Delhi and Jaipur in Rajasthan to get their DNA tested and were doubly assured of their Rajasthan roots.
    Also, one may see on TH-cam " Romani Dances in India-Kalbelia " (th-cam.com/video/q6HfenInNEA/w-d-xo.html) of Rajasthan which is same as Flamingo dance of the Roma. Even the dress of the dancers are same.

    As a student in the US during seventies, I saw some slightly brown students speaking language somewhat familiar to me. They said they were new Roma migrants to the US from Spain but I did not know about Roma at that time.

    I have received many mails from some Roma stating Roma were Doms and untouchables from India and so on. This should not be true. First, there are no Doms in Rajasthan. Second, Roma who came to south still have mostly Rajput surnames or "Gotras" and very few Bhil (a jungle tribe, but soldiers too) surnames. Gotras or lineages dont change in India. Third, down trodden and timid would not venture leaving home to travel thousands of miles and fourth, Doms are very dark even for Indian standards while Roma are not. Fifth, Romani has many war related words including a word for prisoner of war as Dr. Hancock says. Only a martial clan would use and keep alive these words.

    There should be no doubt that Roma are our lost pral and Pena (We would say pra and behna). Hats off to them to keep the language and culture alive even after 50 generations while humanity in the entire world now melts away in two generations.

    I am in contact with many European Roma from whom I gather some new facts time to time. I have also gathered the above information from history of Rajasthan.

      Khamma Ghani loya Shab, I'am a Marwari from Jodhpur and it's surprising for me to see some similarities between Roma language and Marwari but few things we need to keep in mind is that Marwari language was a very institutionalised and Organised before independence it was even used on official documents here in Jodhpur state(Marwar) but I think origin of Roma language and Marwari can be same which is a combination of Sanskrit originated words with Gujarati, little Sindhi. I don't think Roma language originated from Rajasthani/Marwari but our origin can be same. Iam not very well with history but i don't think we can surely say that Romas were Rajputs from Rajasthan. But still iam very fascinated by your research. Thanks alot 🙏

    My great grandparents were Gypsy, and I take after my grandmother and her parents by far the most from my heritage. But I can get near zero information from my family, they go out of their way to hide and erase that section of our family tree. I feel such an outsider in my own family now. My grandmother told me many stories when I was very little, most I can only remember tiny bits from, and no one else will even discuss it.
    I wish I could connect with my heritage, but since that is not possible as I have zero ways to prove any of it with my family stonewalling me. I guess maybe I should be happy I look passingly European, no one can hate me if I look white, living in rural USA.

      So sorry that your family are reluctant to get into a dialogue with you. My half Romany grandmother and full Romany great grandmother both died in the mid1940s in the UK*, so I had no chance - until researching my family tree in later life - to even meet anyone with a strong link to my Romany family tree.
      *Both married non-Roms, as did my quarter Rom mother, so I am only one eighth Romany. The scary fact is, that if I'd been born a few decades earlier in Germany and had had children with a non-Rom during the Nazi regime, those children would have been caught up in the 'Porajmos' (Romany genocide), because having just ONE SIXTEENTH 'gypsy' blood was enough for consignment to the gas chambers.
      Don't give up! Perhaps if you research your family tree and find links outside of your immediate family, you will strike gold? I did!
      When I was around 50 years of age, through a chance contact I made online of her great-niece, I met up with the very elderly daughter of my great grandmother's sister. She was amazing - such a lovely, welcoming lady. I was able to ask her questions which became several pages of fascinating memoirs. Although she only vaguely remembered her Aunt Susan (my great grandma), and only knew of my grandma (her cousin) by family rumours (tip: never dismiss family rumours!), she had two photos which had been passed down by her by her mother of my great grandma, who I'd never seen an image of before, and four photos of my grandma ... where I'd only had one, previously.
      Oh, and those family rumours? One that my mum (despite losing her mum AND maternal grandma before when she was 5) knew about was that we were somehow related to the world-famous Romany evangelist, Gipsy Rodney Smith (a precursor in evangelical fame and influence to Billy Graham). After a lot of research (not helped by a key ancestor having used her mother's maiden name as her surname when she got married ... a not uncommon Romany peccadillo!) I was able to confirm he was the first cousin of the aforementioned Susan's mother, Naomi. Imagine my amazement to discover that Gipsy Smith wrote his (best-selling) memoirs in 1901, and in them recounted several stories of Naomi's father - his beloved Uncle Bartholomew, and my 3 x great grandfather - including the circumstances of his death and his last words. There was even a photograph of Bartholomew in the autobiography. Mind-blowing.
      I've also met the descendant of a brother of Naomi's - who emigrated from England to Canada in the early years of the 1900s and also became a well-known evangelist. She was also able to provide both photos and the memoirs of her ancestor and we've kept in touch and become good friends over the years.
      So ... the moral of this story is ... get digging! It might take years, but if you persevere you never know what you will turn up. Good luck / kushti bok!

      Tomas Puodziukynas You can't change a culture in one day. You can try to attrack them to your way of life, to your culture. But if they don't find it appealing at all, there's nothing else to do. I am speaking from my own experience, as a teacher of adult people. Luckily I have had the opportunity to teach several Gypsy people and I have seen they keep some values we have lost in this individualistic modern world. I have also seen how much they are in need but still they respect who respects them. Sometimes I feel we, as people, fail to understand other people who have decided to walk a different path.

      Tomas Puodziukynas What do you mean with "your home"? Can it be "your country"? If you mean a literal home then, I agree with you. If you mean a country then I disagree because the rules that apply to us today change along history and, let's be honest, there are some rules that are unfair but I accept because otherwise I could end up in jail. Think of those rules that protect and give priviledges to the powerful and leave defenseless the most vulnerable. Countries and societies are alive when they constantly update and renew themselves.

    i am 50% roma Gypsy and i live in america. even though i live in america i can tell you there is some racism towards gypsies in europe. i was on a app called whisper and i made a post that said i don't know much about roma gypsies even though i am one and there was so much hate towards me flooding in from europe, i acted civilized and nice (kinda sarcastic at times yes) but people didn't care they were rude and told me to get a job, said i probably stole my phone and when i said i worked in a cabinet factory they said stop lying and to go back to running my fair grounds in which i said if i did run a fair you would be my clown. i don't get that hate in america although most americans don't even know gypsy aren't really mystical or just culture let alone a race. even though i can claim the title i guess i cant speak for them in europe but here in america we have native americans. most native americans wouldn't want to assimilate because it would hurt their culture which in the gypsies case might be the same.

    Here is some fact about the Romas or Romanis. Here in Hungary the government often gave them brand new houses with wooden floors, hand carved wooden doors, nice gardens and such for a minimal fee. Couple years go by in the winters they have burned all the wooden flooring and doors in the fireplace, and replace them with either some tarp or some missfitting stuff found in the junkyard. I own several properties, i rented some out to some Romas, and in 6 months time i had to spend about 1.4 million HUF on repairs due to their neglegant behaviour in and around the house. Their rent was only 20 thousand HUF a month so it nowhere nearly covered a fraction of the damages. I'm not racist. I have many Roma friends and i do like their culture (what remains of their culture). But i will never rent out any of my properties to them ever again.
    Since then i have been renting out my properties to "Magyar"-s and every 6-8 months I have to forego some rent in favor of repairs and improvements the tenants done on their own accord to my properties.

    I am a Bulgarian and I have never been robbed by gypsies despite visiting my cousin's place (he lives next to gypsy neighborhood) on a regular basis or often being surrounded by members of that ethnicity while commuting by train when I was a uni student. I have witnessed a peaceful gypsy man being verbally abused during one of those trips though. I have also witnessed employment discrimination while working in a fast food chain - while viewing the job applications the restaurant manager admitted he won't be calling those who seem to be from the "mahala" (based on their photos or names) for an interview - and I tend to think this happens quite often. But those claiming that none of the gypsies have a job must have never gone past a construction site or seen the women brushing streets and sidewalks.
    Crime is surely a serious among gypsy communities but I wonder how many of the commentators have been victims of gypsy crime themselves rather than hearing about it from the media. (Gypsies begging OTOH is something I have witnessed quite often but that is not as serious an offence IMO) And while living off welfare is common among people of that ethnicity I believe the idea most people have about the extent of it is exaggerated. (I read quite an eye-opening study by the Solidarity of Bulgaria NGO touching that topic).
    Claiming the "majority" bears zero responsibility for the issues of the gypsy communities is ridiculous.

    They are a really interesting bunch I’ve seen loads of videos of American gypsies, those who live in the Uk, Bulgaria and Romania. I must say from an outsider’s perspective, they seem like a culture so engrossed in their traditions that they’ve basically ignored current norms of society. For example in most societies education is vital but they live in first world countries with little to no education and while most cultures marry over 21 that’s like spinster age for them. I can see how some people might be annoyed by them as they have been linked to high crime rates and seem to ignore government help but I feel they are slowly changing with time and having clear communication with them is vital as they seem very welcoming to people who have documented them from what I’ve seen.

Like sending their kids to school, paying taxes, comply with laws and norms, etc. Its a very complicated issue to deal with, as most are uneducated, violent and have no wish to integrate in our society.

    The linguistic study of Roma/Gypsy language pointed out there is a large occurrence of military words. "You fat doser" dosser for example, it's root is a north indian word for prisoner of war. There is also lots of words for weapons. I reckon the Gypsies left India as part of an Islamic army and then followed the Islamic/Ottoman expansion into Europe.

    So many people in the comments complaining about "racism," but let me just tell you why you're wrong. I am not a racist person, I believe that everyone should be treated equally, regardless of ethnicity or culture. However, having grown up in a country where I have to face gypsies every single time I leave the house, always begging me for money, it becomes tiring and I've developed a hatred for most of them. I appreciate the gypsies who actually work and try to make a living for themselves, but they're a minority within a minority. Most gypsies just beg at the age of 25 so they can feed their 10 children. And it's not like the government hasn't tried to integrate them; they've built apartment buildings for them and tried to get them to work, but those buildings are now in an even worse state than older buildings in Romania, because that's just how they are. There are some rather extreme comments promoting genocide, but, honestly, there is no possible way to integrate them. And that is why I and many other people have come to hate gypsies. Also the fact that they're now calling themselves "romani" because "gypsy" became a "racial slur". You did that yourself, gypsy wouldn't be a racial slur if you hadn't made a name for yourselves as thieves, liars and criminals. I do not wish to hate gypsies, but that's currently the case for me.

    • @robbreyne4452
      @robbreyne4452 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yeah you are racist... You are seeing problems (don't get me wrong, i'm not denying the existence of the problems) and focus to find the cause of these problems within their "race". So to say that you are not a racist is being a freaking hypocrite. That's basic racism 101. Why is there so much racism against black people in the us? Because there are problems, but they exist because of poverty and social discrimination. Their "race" is just the reason how they got to be in that situation.

    • @daaishifeeling
      @daaishifeeling 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Robb Reyne Racism would be discriminating against them purely based on their race, which I don't do. I know that there are gypsies who work hard and stuff, what I was stating was simply an observation I have made over the past years I've lived here. I never said all of them are this way.

    • @daaishifeeling
      @daaishifeeling 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Robb Reyne Also, don't compare that to the situation of black people.You can see it in this video that their situation is completely different and black people actually try to integrate themselves, unlike gypsies.

    • @robbreyne4452
      @robbreyne4452 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      yeah because their cultural differences are bigger and the history of discrimination is far longer than that of the afro-americans, which of course makes it harder to tackle these problems, but still doesn't make the reasons for it any less true. "but they don't want to integrate themselves, but are still living in their own communities" (not quoting) still could be said about afro-americans "they live in their hoods inside their black communities" . just read all the comments here and imagine that you are a gypsy, would you really want to interact with them? discrimination isn't always based on one reason, and if the race is "only" one part of it, it is still racism.

    • @daaishifeeling
      @daaishifeeling 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm not very well informed on the history of afro-americans, so I can't say how similar their situations are, but I've never known of any marches or protests of the gypsies for their freedom, the only one I remember is them protesting that their name is changed from "gypsies" to "rroma". And the government has tried to integrate them, at least in my country, and it was definitely them who didn't accept the integration. For afro-americans, wasn't it that the government was refusing to integrate them?
      As for the racist comments, yes, some of them are blatantly racist without giving any reasons, but I have given my reasons for not particularly admiring most gypsies, and I think they are well-justified. I've met gypsies in my life who also disagree with their fellows and have the same opinion as I do on this topic, more or less. Also, a gypsy probably wouldn't speak English well enough to read most of these comments and a lot of them don't even have a place to live, so the ones I am talking about can't be offended by these comments. I know that there are civilized gypsies, and I very much admire them for standing up to their peers, but unfortunately, there are not enough of them for me and most of the people I know to actually admire and respect gypsies as a whole.

      Lol so if a person of another race will say something stupid to you ,you are going to use one person behaviour to represent the whole community ?are u seriously that dumb?there are countless of people that are acting the same way that are white ,black ,Asian and any other race .Stop being blind no need to have that much hate in your heart ,they are People as well ,just look how they European where treating them through the all freaking millennial ,they were extremely discriminated even now ,they were slaves ,they were killed on sight by nazi ,it makes sense why they keep their community by themselves when they are being treating like this ,in their same country .

      @@Omar-kl3xp i say this from experience, i live in a place where gypsies arent exactly uncommon. yes you cant judge an entire group of what "SOME" people from that group do. but when you experience negative behaviour from a specific group once, twice, three times, four times... 15 times, so on, every time you meet them, and prehaps once or twice you experience a positive side. then you know the difference between "SOME" and "MOST".
      obviously that doesnt mean that you have to be prejudical every time you see a gypsy. but that still doesnt mean you cant point out a common problem among their group if its quite obvious just so you dont offend someone.

      @@Omar-kl3xp im not racist, i dont believe gypsies in general do have such bad behaviour because of their race or ethnicity, if i would believe so i would be racist. but i'd say at least half of gypsy population if not more do have such negative behaviour, i dont believe thats because of their race, i believe thats because of their refusal to integrate and they have sort of a tribalistic view, as if because they are gypsies and not tied with the rest of the world they are allowed to do anything they want. all i say is that countries like poland, hungary, czechia, germany, and france have tried to integrate them for more than 400 years now and they still couldnt.

      no British gypsys/Romany, are of Indian descent, Irish travellers are of Irish native decent. you don't seem to have understood what the man says in this video, or if what your saying is true? then tests must have been done on Irish travellers claiming to be Romany. Romany gypsys are of Asian descent. that's why people used to mistake them for Egyptians, hence the name gypsy.

    I'm Gypsy, however I live in Canada. I knew racism existed towards Gypsy's across the pond but reading these comments makes me disheartened and NOT EVER want to travel to Europe like I previously did prior to reading these comments. Giving gypsies opportunities instead of persecution will solve a lot of the issues. And no. It's not going to happen right away. Probably not even in one generation. It takes time and compassion to solve something that's existed for possibly 1 thousand years.

      Why not in one generation? WHY? It has to be instant change, not slow and gradual! Taking time takes too long. It took less "time" for America to go from having no space program at all to putting Neil Armstrong on the fucking moon!

    • @me5ng3
      @me5ng3 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AirCooledMan2006. You are simply comparing two totally different things. Putting someone on the moon was a matter of science, not culture. Even though we pretty much have the "tools" to change a culture, it takes time. You can't change ideologies or culture in a matter of days. This is simply impossible due to our own psychology. Culture, tradition, ideology are the three things that are extremely well rooted in us. My opinion, in order to change one of those you have to take time or cut the roots while the individual is young.

      Those who moved to North America typically settled down and integrated into society. It would be difficult for them to do anything illegal without having to contend with both the legal system and various already established criminal gangs.

      @Farla Bau Wow this was from 4 years ago. Anyway, I said they share some things in common. Do your research both groups do. Romani and Mincéirí are generally different ethnic groups. Having similarities between two different groups is nothing new. Tons of ethnic groups have things in common. Gypsy is not their term for themselves. Rather like Romani it was an ethnic slur used by outsiders for them. Mincéirí is a better choice or at least Travelers. They are just another marginalized group in Europe and elsewhere. They didn't steal Romani cultural identity. They have their own.

    • @Carblesnarky
      @Carblesnarky 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Farla Bau Ok this is going to be long. No I am not saying that they are the same ethnic groups. I am saying both are marginalized groups that have some things in common. As to the term Gypsy do your research. It is a racial slur that has been applied to more people that just the Romani. It's like many slurs. They get applied all over the place. There many many cultures in Africa but a single racial slur is often used for them. Whether you like it or not, it has been applied to both groups over the years. It's a fact. The important point is that it was applied and it's a slur. Both Romani and Travelers may choose to use and reclaim the term. Many ethnic groups reclaim slurs. As to the marginalization of the Travelers or even the Irish in general, do your research. There is a centuries long history of it. Several ethnic groups from Europe have been marginalized and many have suffered genocide. I am going to leave the conversation now but I will leave you with this. I fully acknowledge the marginalization and suffering of the Romani people. Do not deny the Traveler's suffering because of the color of their skin.

      @MJ tops you're completely misinformed on Irish Travellers, we never stole anything from Gypsies.
      What happened was that regular people in the UK & Ireland didn't care to discriminate between Romani and Irish Travellers in the past, so called them all Gypsies as a pejorative. One which Irish Travellers have reclaimed and in English it has become a byword for someone rootless anyway.
      It's an adoption of a name, not a culture. We have our own culture and plenty of people lived semi-nomadic lives in the past. It's not exclusive to the Romani and / or Irish Travellers, we are aware that Irish Travellers and Romani, Cinti culture all have plenty of differences.
      Also, we are White but Irish Travellers were officially recognised as an indigenous ethnic minority in March 2017 in Ireland.
      In the UK, Irish travellers are a separate ethnic group entitled to the same protection under the Race Relations Act as other ethnic minorities in Britain.
