  • This is it, this is the big one!! It’s prolly my last extreme clothes declutter bc I don’t have anymore storage lockers anymore! Everything is in our house so I believe I grabbed every clothing bin I could find! I explain how I emotionally detach myself from my clothes and how I feel this is what a minimalist would do, let go of this amount of clothes in 1 session!! We got this!!!

I've been a minimalist for about 7 years now. When I decided to become one, I did it within 6 months. When you said, "I'm tired of seeing all this stuff," it took me back to the feeling I had. It's a relief to unburden yourself of things that you don't actually value. Congratulations to you!

@@turkishstraycats3122 it absolutely is hard. When I was going through my phase, I had piled up all of things I knew I should get rid of. That pile was so big that I went into crisis mode. I felt extreme guilt and extreme frustration. I kept that pile on the floor for 2 weeks and cried a few times.
Then I donated/sold/gave it all away. Piling it all up changed the way I handle purchases now. It was an expensive mistake.

Minimalism is not about having little, it's about having enough. Minimalism is a lifestyle of mental and emotional abundance in a person's physical and mental state. Congratulations, every empty basket brings you closer to harmony within yourself.

Interestingly, this kinda reminds me of how it is with food issues. If I put a positive focus on it and tell myself I can have a cookie, that goes a long way towards feeling like one is enough (maybe two 😉). But if I put a negative focus on it, telling myself I can’t have any cookies, I may end up wanting to eat the whole box.

The best piece of advice I ever got in relation to decluttering clothes was being told not to let clothes that no longer fit bully me! That I deserve to have a closet with clothes that fit & I love, rather than things that make me feel guilty & unhappy xx

What a victory! Now when you go to switch out your seasonal clothes, go through them before putting them in the basement bin and make sure you wore and loved them all. Then as you put the spring/summer ones in the closet and drawers do the same. This way you only have to declutter a few things at a time to stay on top of it.

I've never been a clothes or shoes girl. And what you're describing as the clothes just making you TIRED... exactly. All of my clothing AND shoes (including my winter hats and scarves and handmade shawls) all fit in ONE 5-drawer dresser. I have my halloween cape, motorcycle jacket, and winter coat in our bedroom closet with my Docs boots, and that's it. More clothing than I can wear in about 8-10 days just stresses me out. Seeing you in that beginning pile made me honestly anxious. lol!! But you have done SO AMAZING! And seeing you go to drop it off at the end was SO satisfying! ^_^ Congrats! I wish for the clothes you chose to keep to bring you tons of joy!

I found it easier to pile the clothes into separate piles as I emptied my closets and drawers. I had piles for jeans, dress pants, dresses, skirts, dress shirts, t-shirts, sweaters, pj’s, underwear and workout clothes. It was a little shocking to find out I could wear a different t-shirt everyday for 4 1/2 months. And, because I own a washer and dryer, I dropped it down to my favorite 14 for yard work, gym and everyday wear. It also helped to take a break after each category. I had to keep telling myself to donate to help someone that could use them and not store them in tubs. I am retired with decades worth of clothes and sizes ranging from 5-1x. It took 3 days to get through my hoard. I also took a photo of my huge embarrassing stacks of clothes. Now I’m on to shoes and boots.

I have been following you for years and I used your videos to understand my Mom beter as struggled with many of the same issues. Growing up in her house made me a minimalistas I always saw stuff as a burden something you need to take care of to avoid it owning you. I am so happy that you made so much progress.

Well done Melanie! SO proud of the amazing progress you have made!!! I recently did a no spend season, which made me realize that I also had more clothes than I can actually wear. In that abundance mindset, I began to enjoy wearing clothes I hadn't in a while and did an even deeper declutter than usual. Now I have room for most of the items left, and my closet is so much easier to maintain. You are correct though, it is a process that never ends, but can be fun. I am fortunate to have a wonderful consignment shop where I sell my clothes and a donation center that takes what doesn't sell. It is a lengthy process to get systems in place so that one is regularly decluttering and taking items out of the house, so those reading this don't be discouraged! Keep going! Once the systems are in place, it gets easier!

It was so great to see the donation follow through at the end! Woohoo!!!
I donate to Goodwill as well, but if there's clothes I have a harder time letting go of, I take the extra time and steps to donate to my local women's shelter. Knowing that they won't have to buy them, and they'll get to have nice things, makes it easier for me to let go of clothes and household items that I no longer use, but still feel attached to.
Maybe this idea could replace your yard sale idea? Then the things get removed from your space faster. And give you more free time to spend with your family during the nice weather~

I’m working on this…slowly. I’m so much more thoughtful now about how many clothes I bring in too. I decided that I’d really rather have much less but much better quality items. So I’m more picky if I buy something and it’s usually secondhand or clearance so there’s no need to feel guilt about how much I spent as long as it’s good quality, I’ll wear it, and I keep letting go of the old. Congrats! 🎉

Yes, this is you becoming a minimalist. Being tired of the stuff, tired of making decisions, tired of being “bullied” by these clothes when they give you negative feelings when you dont really feel good when some pieces dont spark joy and mostly tired of managing the inventory… i am so so proud of you and praying for your channel to grow so you can do this as a full time thing. God bless you Ms. Melanie 💖🥰

A few days ago I threw away a full black garbage bag of religious underwear. I have moved away from my religion two years ago and will never go back. I let this huge hoard of 10-30 year old underwear bully me. No more! I have moved on in my life (new me) and it felt yucky to have it in my drawers. ❤

Very encouraging!!! Denise Linn is a big believer in energy meaning you will fill void/need when you remove items mindfully. So the regret over removing the smaller clothing items because then you lost the weight -- you lost the weight because you were ready to let go of that stuff. Trust you did the right thing.
Ditto the stuff that's larger that you're keeping now 'just in case.' Absolutely not helping your cause. Plants a negative seed that you'll fail to keep the weight off. If you love it keep it but 'just in case' isn't justification.

So I just moved into a friend's house and while I have the master bedroom...fitting everything I own into one room....still makes it look like your basement from years ago. Im considering starting my own channel to record my journey as I finally learn to let go of all the extra things I don't need. There's certainly excess is certain categories like bags, clothes , shes and books.

Wow!! That is a lot of clothes!! I wanted to point out that you didn't mention thanking the items that you were donating, which is part of the Kon Mari method. I admire you so much for doing that with such an overwhelming number of clothes!! Getting rid of that huge pile of clothing without even going through them was incredible! Once you realize that you have enough clothing, going through a pile of clothing that you really don't need makes so much sense, but hoarders usually can't do it. Bravo! It really would not have been worth the effort. One thing that I think is a good tip is for anything that's really sentimental that you want to keep because of the memories, you can take a picture of it and keep the picture and give the item away. That way you can look at the picture and have the memories without having to have space to store the item.
