I was planning to make a service call first thing in the morning. Decided to check TH-cam first and found your video. Thanks to you, I'm back up and running. Thanks!
Thank you so much for the video! I liked and subscribed now. Our furnace was blowing cold air and my wife was about to make the call to the repair man. I was like, "Wait!! TH-cam has everything on there. Let me see if I can find a video for help." She gave me 30 minutes because its cold here in the midwest. So BAM!! In 15 minutes, my furnace is back to blowing hot air. Also, we are first time home owners so I am learning as the days go by. Thanks again!

Just fixed my problem by replacing the filter! It was dusty from moving stuff around in the basement plus I learned that burning candles really plugs the filter too! Thanks for your help, my landlord is happy to save money lol
Good morning ☕️ We are honored to read this. Awesome job! You will continue to benefit greatly by making your projects DIY. A happy landlord is a bonus too. 😁👍 Let us know if you have any questions.
Earlier,I mentioned that you forgot something and I replied saying that it was the “igniter” that is a most common problem, which it can be, it can get damaged really easy, but the most common problem that I have found of a furnace blowing cold air and the fan continuously blowing, is the “flame sensor”. It’s found sticking up through the bottom, in the back of the farthest left burner tube. It tells the control board that there is flame and if there is no flame, it will shut off the gas immediately. If this gets carboned up or dirty, it won’t be able to sense properly and the burner won’t ignite. The furnace will usually go on for 3-5 seconds, then shut off, then keep repeating itself, all while the fan continues to blow cold air. The “flame sensor” needs to be cleaned. This usually has a screw or a nut holding it in and is easily removed. Take it out and it will look like a thin steel rod, a few inches long with a couple of wires attached to it. Take a scotchbrite pad, a clean one, with no oils on it, and gently rub the dirt off until it shines a bit again. Give it a quick wipe with a soft clean rag and screw it back in. You may need to put the cover back on the furnace to make it start as some furnaces have a safety kill switch under the lid. Turn your main power switch to the furnace back on and it should fire right up like new. If you do things in your basement or home like I do, this “flame sensor” can get dirty really quick. I airbrush with paint which sends particles through the air and I also make bread with flour that travels through the air and these powders can settle on a hot flame sensor and burn their way onto the sensor, which makes it dirtier than normal. The buildup will stop the sensor from working. You should always keep the area around your furnace as dust free and clutter free as you can, as the furnace needs it’s room to breath, about 2’-3’ feet minimum. If you have boxes piled up, 5 feet high, 1 foot from the furnace, it won’t get adequate breathing space and will likely over heat, putting stress on all parts and is dangerous. I just had a problem with my furnace not heating and, l forgot when I changed the filter last and it was 4 months ago, and I was making a lot of pizza dough, with flour. So the filter got clogged with this floating flour being sucked in through the return air duct. I changed the filter and she fired right up with no issues. So if changing the filter doesn’t rectify the problem, your “flame sensor” is the most-likely next culprit and easy to clean. JUST MAKE SURE TO TURN YOUR MAIN POWER SWITCH OFF BEFORE DOING ANYTHING INSIDE THE FURNACE. Cheers
Wow! Wow! I even don't know nothing about furnace, but reading your valuable info, I am able to understand a little bit. I will read again because I . New in all this things. Definitely I will by tomorrow a new filter. Ty so very much for this amazing information. God bless you and your family. Thank you again😇👃💖💐💗
I'm currently experiencing this exact issue. We woke up to our house at 60, yet I had set the thermostat to 70 when we went to bed. So far, clean filter, most internal parts look like-new; as we had the furnace replaced only 5 years ago. Will try your next two steps. Thanks!

Had a family/guest leave their window open and lock the door to the room and leave. Heat kept running until it began to blw cold air. Think it could be the kill switch thing? I was told the heating element prob burned out. Is that the same thing?
Good morning Michael, so happy to help. New floors are exciting. We will be getting new flooring soon. Hopefully many stress free days ahead for you. 😎👍
My furnace runs good for a while, heating the house, but now is blowing cold air again. Does this every day. The LED comes on at the furnace, showing an error. Does this mean that my filter is in backwards? If it was in backwards, it wouldn't blow heat at all, would it? Thanks for the video.
would a bad ignitor work sometimes? my furnace is occasionally running cold. If I restart, it will work again for a day or so and then have a cold cycle.
Simple explanations. My filter was gross. I am normally great at changing it. Not sure why I missed that for so long. I turned everything on again. I am not gonna dig into anything if this doesn't work because I am currently renting. I hope this works because I am 🥶
You know what happened when my “high limit switch” was not turning off the fan. I cleaned the filter and while waiting for my “new limit switch” to show up, I thought, what the heck, I pulled out the “flame sensor”, and as I was removing it, I noticed that the screw holding it in was very loose. So I removed it all the way to clean the sensor, it was pretty dirty, I put it back in very tight and I have not had a problem with the flame sensor or the limit switch and my furnace has been running like brand new ever since. Maybe the flame sensor was sitting on a diagonal, and wasn’t correctly sensing the flame and it caused both to malfunction. It was a good thing too, because they sent me the wrong “limit switch”.😜👍😉
Thanks for watching & sharing this, it’s definitely possible. It’s great to hear you’re back up and running. Awesome job making it a DIY project. We hate when companies send us the wrong parts...😫 😎👍
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders How it fixed the problem, blew my mind. I didn’t know these two parts work together. The next time it happens, the “flame sensor” is what I’m checking first. Actually, I emailed the company that I bought the “wrong sensor” from and he told me that I can still use the “high-limit switch” that they sent me, but it just has a narrower sensor field than the one that’s in there. Which is good to know, now I have a spare one. I did tap the back of the “limit switch”, maybe that’s what made it work again, but like I said, it’s still working today. Cheers
Good morning, we are drinking our morning coffee answering any and all questions for the DIY community. Not 100% understanding the question, can you clarify. 😎👍
I have a Rheem Criterion that started blowing cold air. I noticed the igniter stopped working and no gas coming out when blower kicked on. The air filter (kitchen ceiling intake) was dirty so I replaced. Also replaced igniter, limit switch, and pressure switch. I cleaned the flame sensor and checked condensate pan…no water. Also troubleshot the circuit board, appears good. What am I missing?
Sir, great video! I have an air handler by first Company 36HBXB-HW which blows cold air when I’m asking it to blow hot. I see the switch rotating to open the hot water valve “this unit uses hot water to heat”. I have those V-shape aluminum filter grid that I cleaned 3 years ago and noticed they a little dirty but not super dirty. I do use external disposable filter as well. Could it be the v-shape needs to be sprayed and clean? My AC works fine btw….
Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. A friendly cleaning goes a long way. We also recommend verifying all wiring is properly secured by their respective screws. The vibration of the electricity inside wires can loosen the screws over the years. Keep us posted. 😎👍🔧🔩
I turn on heater and inducer motor doesn’t turn on as first step. I am checking with multimeter and shows signs of not being at fault . Not sure what’s going on… any ideas?
@@arturbukatar4532 Thanks for watching, double check connection points to ensure they are properly connected as well as not rusted or corroded. You may also have a loose connection inside on control board. We recommend shutting furnace down and turning switch off, followed by inspecting all incoming and outgoing wiring on the control board that’s secured with their respective screw, that secures them in place. If any of the screws are loose, carefully…without overtightening… tighten the screw.

My problem is it blows hot air but then when it's about to turn off, probably 60 seconds before it shuts off, it blows cold air. What could be the issue?
dk if you look at comments still for this, but what if it has a roaring flame,, filter is new and very clean,,, but after about 30 mins blows cold air... still has roaring flames tho... any suggestions
We most certainly do, and good morning. Just poured a ☕️ and am sitting down to answer any and all questions for the DIY community. It’s normal for system to blow cool air in the very beginning as well as the remaining 90 seconds after burners cut off. In the beginning, the inducer motor and fan are running and performing a pre-ignition test to ensure all systems are a Go. On the tail end of the cycle…when the furnace has brought the homes temperature back up to the pre-selected temperature set on the wall-mounted thermostat…once the burners turn off, the system continues to blow air for 90 seconds or so and push all remaining warm air out of duct-work as well as perform its own cool-down phase. Kinda like a workout on a treadmill…after a 30 minute jog, the treadmill has you do a 5 minute cool-down. Is your furnace bringing the home’s temperature up to the pre-set temperature and then blowing cold air as mentioned above? Please keep us posted, we are here to help. tuned the air filter the wife put in and bam hot air lol you live and learn :p good luck to everyone else watching hopefully its the same simple problem
Just removed very dirty filter. So bad I couldn't clean it. My bad. I'll get filters tomorrow. In the meantime, the furnace won't blow warm air, just cool. Blows for about 5 minutes then stops. Should I deduce that it's the limit switch or igniter? I noted one of the commenters said it took 2 hours after changing filter for furnace to blow warm air.
Thanks for watching & it’s most likely the filter. Once the new filter is installed, and the system turns back on & runs it’s quick ventilation test, it should be back up & running. 😎👍
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders I really appreciate your input. I decided to get a furnace repair rep since I live alone, have no experience with furnaces and I'm lazy when it's cold outside 😉. I'll update you when it's all running smoothly. Btw, after triggering the furnace to run at least 10x (and it puts out cold air for 2-5 mins then stops), I no longer can trigger it to turn on. So maybe something else going on?
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders Problem solved. My fresh air intake pipe is nested inside the air outflow pipe (so it sort of floats). It had become dislodged and was resting on top of the opening of the elbowed, branched off fresh air intake pipe inside the house (inside house, the two are separated). So the repairman glued the fresh air intake pipe so it would again "float" and not block the branched off fresh air intake pipe. $159 for 40 minutes troubleshooting and gluing and a new filter.
My furnace will blow out cold air for a few hours then go back to warm air, I'm in Indiana recent Friday it got down to minus 9 degrees. The office is closed were I live till the 2nd maintenance is on call but I'm being ignored.

1 WEEK AGO- my basement starting getting COLD drafts. As in I went from wearing a shirt, to 2 sweaters PLUS a winter hat. I can feel the breeze. Even upstairs main level - -- I feel some cold breeze. BUT....my heat is working! There's warm air coming from vents. I've felt every vent in the house - NO cold air from there. I do hear a 'thud' once in awhile I assume it's from furnace. Based on these clues - is it possible the furnace or HVAC is responsible for this sudden cold-ness in my house? BUT if so - and cold air isn't coming from vents ---where the heck could it be coming from? Appreciate any opinions...maybe it's not furnace and it's something else but this is weird, just started a week ago.
Good morning, just poured a ☕️ and am sitting down to answer any and all questions for the DIY community. We appreciate you sharing your experience. It’s possible that the furnace filter is a bit dirty and ready to be replaced. Since warm air is coming out of vents, your furnace seems to be working properly…🤔 The loud thud is a bit concerning if it’s extreme however when the furnace turns on, the built-in capacitor helps alleviate the electrical hit (thud) on system. This prevents your lights from dimming or flickering every time furnace turns on. It’s possible that a faulty capacitor is causing issues. Keep us posted. @@MPDLR Thanks for the follow up, Dunkin coffee sounds good. You mentioned you had it serviced. What all did technician do other than the filter replacement?
He changed the "differential' which he says means that less cool air comes out before the heated air comes out. Thanks for watching, are your burners turning off after a bit? If the burners ignite & the flames are hot, followed by cold air out of the vents...we recommend re-checking to see if your burners are still lit. If they are not, the system has shut down the burners due to lack of ventilation.

@@ethanasmr7379 Thanks for the reply. Is the inducer spinning or is the blower motor & fan? If the inducer continues to spin however the blower motor does not, you will not get warm air to push through the ductwork and out of the vents.

Good morning, welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. There is a way to turn on just the blower motor with heat... in other words, the furnace will sound like it’s fully up and running however the heat is not being generated...it’s just the blower motor running & pushing air through system. My vents blow cold air initially and then the heat kicks in. Would any of these 3 issues (filter, switch, or igniter) contribute to my situation or do you think it could be different?
Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. That is normal. Once furnace starts, it goes through a ventilation test phase to ensure the system is getting the proper air flow. During this phase, it is blowing room temp/colder air out of vents. Once system detects proper and efficient flow of air, it then introduces heat to the system. Hope this helps. Enjoy your day! 😎👍🔧🔩
Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. Great question & and hopefully we can help answer this. Your furnace will run a pre-heat ventilation test to ensure that your system is receiving the proper amount of ventilation/air prior to igniting the burners. During this test, the blower motor is running and pushing room temp/cold air through the system and out of the vents. Once the system confirms it has proper ventilation, it lights the burners and begins pushing heat out of your vents. Once the home is heated to the preset temperature on your wall mounted thermostat, your furnace turns off...however...the blower motor continues to run for a few minutes to push any and all remaining warm air inside all of the ductwork and out of the vents into your living space. No warm air goes to waste. Hope this helps. 😎👍

@@gregmaliska5295 Thanks for the reply. When furnace is running, do you notice any sporadic behavior in regards to the flames aiming downward through burner tubes? You will notice sensors on each side of your ignition housing where burner tubes are. These sensors act as safety sensors. It operated 1 day and I didn't use it the next day because it was hot outside. Now its malfunctioning. Is the side with the metal parts of the filter and arrow suppose to face the furnace? Thanks for your assistance.
@@tishshamiller Thanks for watching & yes, the arrows are to be facing with the direction of the airflow. If this doesn’t help, verify all vents are free of any blockage. If this doesn’t help, we will move onto the next step of getting new parts. 😎👍🔧🔩
Hi I seem to be having an issue with cold air coming through the vents when I turn on the thermostat. Eventually the heat will com on but it seems the fan runs longer than it should. Could it be an airflow/venting or thermostat issue?
Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. The most common cause is a very dirty, possibly wet filter filled with mold. We recommend checking your filter to ensure it is new and clean. 😎👍
Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. Its normal for your furnace to turn on and blow cold air for the first 2 minutes or so. Once the system verifies it has proper ventilation, it will then ignite the burners & provide heat. After your thermostat senses that your home has heated to the preset temperature, it will turn off your furnace. Once your furnace turns off, your blower motor will continue to run for an additional 2-3 minutes to ensure all heat is pushed out of the ducks and into your rooms. 😎👍🔧🔩
Have an air conditioner unit outside of house, and when i turn on heat it blows cold. I changed the filter inside, now what shall i do? should i turn on/off the circuit breaker then see or what. We have been having a lot of power outages in my area, not only is not the unit blowing heat, the microwave is working but not heating up either. What's going on with all the heat?
@@louiselove8982 Thanks for the reply. Next, turn wall mounted thermostat off & verify electrical switch located on side of furnace is off as well. Remove cover panel & verify all wires are properly secured by their respective securing screws & electrical connection points. Any loose connection points or wiring can cause electrical shortages & lead to system not igniting burners...blowing cold air.
@@geraldbartlett802 Thanks for the reply & if your furnace is operating normally by heating your home to the proper temp setting you have selected, all is working properly. Once the furnace heats your home to the set temperature, your furnace turns off and begins a 60-90 second cool down phase. The cool down phase allows any and all remaining hot air in system to be pushed out of the duct work and into your home. Once hot air is removed, room temp air & then cold air will come out events until your furnace turns off. Hope this helps. 😎👍🔧🔩

Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. You will always want a filter inside your furnace. We recommend removing old filter when you get new filter and installing new filter. The filter helps catch several things including miscellaneous debris being sucked through your duct work that could possibly harm the internal moving parts of your furnace. Keep us posted on your project. 😎👍🔧🔩
Now I got a really good one for you guys, I can’t find my furnace….lol….when I fixed my AC unit the tech from PG&E mentioned in the conversation that my furnace must be in my attic. Upstairs when I remove the filter housing & take out the filter….all I see is the duct but no furnace.

@@ronaldsosa951 Thanks for the reply. We recommend replacing filter. A clogged filter can lead to degraded ventilation within the system & the furnace will continue blowing air however for safety purposes, it will turn off heat. Keep us posted. 😎👍🔧🔩

I am really trying to keep my sh!t together with this problem. Why does my heater work properly but at the vents in my home it feels only warm at the base and cool 6 inchs away.
@@dg5745 Thanks for watching, this is a common thing to experience. The further away the air travels from vent, the more it mixes with the room temperature air and cools slightly…however… It should definitely continue to warm your home to the pre-set temperature that you have selected on the wall mounted thermostat. Is your home not heating to proper temperature? If so, double check that your furnace filter is clean, and vents are fully open. If all looks good, double check that nothing is covering or interfering with the inlet vents throughout home as well as the outlet vents. Worst case scenario, your blower motor is weakening and is no longer blowing warm air efficiently and properly through duct work and out of vents. ☕️🧰
Filter arrow is to keep the correct side pointed to the blower reason is the one side of filter is reinforced so the filter matireal does not get sucked in !

On the heat setting, my vents keep alternating between hot and room-temp air. I set the temperature to 72 but it’s mostly staying at 66 degrees give or take a couple degrees. Any idea what could be causing this problem? I tried reprogramming the thermostat so the schedule/temp is set to 72 all the time. But the highest it’s gone since i had this issue is 69 degrees. Any help would be much appreciated!!
Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. It’s very possible that your internal sensors are detecting erratic flame behavior. Once flames are ignited, they are to be evenly & efficiently directed inward toward furnace. If flames get even the slightest off set, the sensors turn system off. Keep us posted. 😎👍🔧🔩
Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. Two things come to mind. 1. Your Filter needs to be replaced. Believe it or not, a clogged Filter can cause your exact symptoms. 2. Issue with your Gas Valve. It’s very possible that your Gas Valve is faulty. However, a few things to check. The Gas Valve itself has an On/Off switch. Verify it’s on. Next, follow the gas line feeding out of the Valve and follow it all the way up to the shutoff valve. Verify it’s open. Keep us posted. Enjoy your day! 😎👍🔧🔩
Thanks for watching Bill, we recommend replacing filter. A dirty filter will cause the furnace to do exactly that. But keep in mind, your furnace will blow cold air for the first minute or two after turning on prior to the igniter igniting the burners. 😁👍

Let us know if you have any questions.
Cheers
Your added advice is greatly appreciated. This is very helpful info for viewers. Hope all is well. 😎👍

My furnace runs good for a while, heating the house, but now is blowing cold air again. Does this every day. The LED comes on at the furnace, showing an error. Does this mean that my filter is in backwards? If it was in backwards, it wouldn't blow heat at all, would it?

would a bad ignitor work sometimes? my furnace is occasionally running cold. If I restart, it will work again for a day or so and then have a cold cycle.

🤦 my filter was in the wrong direction. Thanks buddy🤙
We hate when companies send us the wrong parts...😫
😎👍
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders How it fixed the problem, blew my mind. I didn’t know these two parts work together. The next time it happens, the “flame sensor” is what I’m checking first. Actually, I emailed the company that I bought the “wrong sensor” from and he told me that I can still use the “high-limit switch” that they sent me, but it just has a narrower sensor field than the one that’s in there. Which is good to know, now I have a spare one. I did tap the back of the “limit switch”, maybe that’s what made it work again, but like I said, it’s still working today. Cheers

Thanks for watching, double check connection points to ensure they are properly connected as well as not rusted or corroded.

Since warm air is coming out of vents, your furnace seems to be working properly…🤔
The loud thud is a bit concerning if it’s extreme however when the furnace turns on, the built-in capacitor helps alleviate the electrical hit (thud) on system. This prevents your lights from dimming or flickering every time furnace turns on. It’s possible that a faulty capacitor is causing issues. Keep us posted.

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders Hi. Had it serviced. New filter. Today it's March 13th. 60 degrees outside. I just went to basement I couldn't sit for 5 minutes it was that cold. Any ideas? Thanks. (I had a free Dunkin coffee just now from my app points so at least that was a win :)
@@MPDLR
Thanks for the follow up, Dunkin coffee sounds good. You mentioned you had it serviced. What all did technician do other than the filter replacement?
He changed the "differential' which he says means that less cool air comes out before the heated air comes out. BUT the basement is freezing still and honestly, I feel cold breeze on the main level too. I asked him if ducts in basement could be leaking - he said no way because then I'd not get heat on the next level up. All I know is even now - it's 60 outside. I bet it's 45 in basement.
@@MPDLR
Thanks for the info. Do you notice any inefficiencies with the burners and flames? Any sporadic or weak flames?
The burners should have perfectly straight and managed flames being sent downstream toward the chambers.
Can you tell what could cause my furnace to blow half cold half hot half of my house is blowing cold air and the other side is blowing hot. Can't figure it out.
Thanks for watching, have you replaced filter recently? The common causes for this is:
1. Dirty filter
2. Wall mounted Thermostat needs to be reset
3. Faulty fan limit switch.

Thanks for watching, any update? By chance do you hear your lower blower motor and fan turn on? If not, that may be the issue.
What's the problem when your furnace blows cold air only sometimes throughout the day?
Thanks for watching & this can be a # of different things.
1. Clogged air filter
2. Intermittently working Limit Switch
3. Intermittently working ignition system
We recommend replacing air filter 1st. If that doesn’t solve problem, it’s time to replace the Limit Switch before it fails all together. Below is a link to our video showing the replacement of Limit Switch.

How about it starts up normal and burning and then eventually after about ten minutes the heat stops and it continues to blow the flames stop and i see a faint spark sometimes trying to light i think
Thanks for watching, this is usually caused by interruption in the gas flow. Make sure your gas line valve is in the full open position.
Also, make sure your gas line is properly secured to gas valve. If you’re still having issues, a minor adjustment to your gas valve may fix problem.

Thanks for watching, are your burners turning off after a bit? If the burners ignite & the flames are hot, followed by cold air out of the vents...we recommend re-checking to see if your burners are still lit.
If they are not, the system has shut down the burners due to lack of ventilation.

@@ethanasmr7379
Thanks for the reply. Is the inducer spinning or is the blower motor & fan?
If the inducer continues to spin however the blower motor does not, you will not get warm air to push through the ductwork and out of the vents.
Good video, but... none of these are my problem. The filter is clean and installed properly. The furnace ignites and works fine, I can see all the flames when I pull off the cover. Looks good.
But still the air blowing out is BARELY lukewarm. This just started all of a sudden. Does anyone have any idea what's going on?

Because told me it was clean but its cold as hell.

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders Thanks!

Hi, my Americal Standard Gold series furnace starts blowing out cold air everytime when in restarts after reaching the max temerature set. Why?
What do you do if your igniter fails?

Thanks for the reply. When furnace is running, do you notice any sporadic behavior in regards to the flames aiming downward through burner tubes?
You will notice sensors on each side of your ignition housing where burner tubes are. These sensors act as safety sensors. Anytime the flames are not efficiently aiming downstream, your sensors will pick up on the sporadic imbalance of heat and shut the system down... however your blower motor will still run for a while which will lead to cold air coming out of the vents.

My furnace will turn on in the off position and blow cold air. Do you know what could cause this?
Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. Its normal for your furnace to turn on and blow cold air for the first 2 minutes or so.
Once the system verifies it has proper ventilation, it will then ignite the burners & provide heat. After your thermostat senses that your home has heated to the preset temperature, it will turn off your furnace.
Once your furnace turns off, your blower motor will continue to run for an additional 2-3 minutes to ensure all heat is pushed out of the ducks and into your rooms.

Thanks for watching, this is a common thing to experience. The further away the air travels from vent, the more it mixes with the room temperature air and cools slightly…however…
It should definitely continue to warm your home to the pre-set temperature that you have selected on the wall mounted thermostat.
