in the mid 80's in college we used to go there to buy drugs and get 1/2 food stamps. the good ole days. sad what the area has become since the 70's. if you are from the area you know what i mean.

Having just watched a couple / three videos about the decline of East Towne Mall, I am wondering about the impact on the African American community in East Knoxville? I understand that it has been replaced by an Amazon Distribution Warehouse now. While this monstrosity must surely be an eyesore for the folks living the apartment / townhouse complex that stand behind it (where the mall was once located), I wonder about the jobs and economic opportunities provided by Amazon for the residents of the East Knoxville Community. I’ve heard that Amazon requires their warehouse workers to labor in slave like conditions without sufficient restroom breaks, etc. The work conditions have been compared to those of the young Italian immigrant girls who perished in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire at the turn of the twentieth century. Is the Amazon distribution warehouse such a workhouse? Or, does it provide much needed economic income for the community of East Knoxville?
