The nice thing about deep cycle lead acid batteries, you can exchange them before the warranty expires in 3 or what ever the warranty is free of charge , no questions asked. Try that with an expensive lithium battery. 😉

I've been putting solar panels on everything I own including the top of a van. Get yourself a cheap little solar controller that can keep just one extra car battery charged and running inverter off that and it's amazing how much difference it makes to be able to have electrical power in your vehicle without having to run the gas motor.

If the lithium lovers would do some deep digging they would discover those batteries are going to cost them more to dispose of than they cost when they bought them. Lead acid batteries have been recycled for over a century and will always be recyclable. Lithium batteries cost the user twice.
ya but like everything else are they pushing these lithium batteries on us for a reason ....so we cant repair them we cant replace them we cant buy them all without spending tons of money for regulations for making and disposal fees for getting rid off its all getting so expensive and so complicated in the name of safety and technology but is it really needed in all applications like this?

In Europe, Estonia 375w 36V 11A panel costs 60€(65$), 6kw growatt 220v 48v inverter is 700€(750$) and 15kw lifepo4 battery is little less then 2000€(2200$). So my system is 22x 375W panels (8250W), 6kw inverter and 30kw lifepo4 battery and it all costed me 5500€(6000$). for a 1,5years i've never used grid power, not even a onece.

Modern solar panels like that can also be used as basic roofing material. Something to consider if you're about to build a shed or you haven't yet built your tiny home. Go ahead and put your solar panels on like roofing panels. Get some gutters to go between them so the rain that goes between the panels flows off the roof. You can cut PVC pipe in half to do that. Or just put your panels on top of your roof saves the wear and tear on your roof especially if it's an old style tar shingle roof. That additional shade will also keep your house much cooler in the summertime if your house is exposed to the sunlight.

You can also buy used lead acid batteries out of wrecked cars. Remember the batteries aren't usually going to be hurt in the wrecked car and you can test them before you buy them. My local recycler will sell them for $0.50 per pound which means you can get a 30 lb battery for $15 and that'll be a standard car battery. So you can easily build up a whole lot of lead acid batteries in a bank that have 80% of the performance for very cheap price.
yes these are cheap ways to do it but not as reliable as batteries with the same cca or amp hours or the same life cycles left or the same state of health....you will always have a battery failing on you much quicker this way but you do what you have to do to save money

I used golf cart (gc2) batteries for years on my system they are fine & dependable. You just have a little maintenance with them. Yeah cores, about 25$ each. I finally went with agm because I got a screaming deal. Cheers.

Be putting one in about Jan or Feb. Looking at 10 400w panels - $1800. Charge controller 6000w split phase - $1300. 48v battery 100ah, 5.1kw - $1200. Rack for panels around $750. With incidentals likely about $5500 total. May throw in another battery or wait. Up front needs aren't too high. But do plan on a mini split 9k air conditioner. Shouldn't be a problem to run around the clock with at least 80 percent battery use available.
Just a small building to grow maggots in year round. Might possibly stack another controller on and build it out further and start taking loads off the house later on.
Are you getting eg4 equipment?.. sounds like the inverter and the battery may be eg4... Also yeah definitely two batteries would be awesome but did you see the video I did where I installed four of those batteries you're talking about on a 5000 watt system?

12000 BTU mini split with AC and heat uses a lot less electric to run than an 8000 BTU window unit. They are very efficient.

@@OKLAHOMAOFFGRID Read all the specification. Just looking on Home Depot site, 12000 BTU mini split- 1000 watts. 12000 BTU LG window unit- 990 watts. Mini split has two fans, one for the outside condenser, one for the inside evaporator. Window units use just one. You do get a heat pump with the mini split.
So, is there a way to charge enough batteries so that you’ll have power during a few cloudy days? I’m wanting to just have enough capacity to run a small fridge in case of a power outage. I don’t know if I should look at 12v fridges or use a small beverage cooler. Thoughts?
I run my ac and home off solar. Its only a 30 foot holiday rambler travel trailer but its great for and the wife when we are not in the semi truck. We have a 24 volt solar power system and a couple different inverters. My split phase 4000 watt sungold power inverter runs the 220 minisplit thats 38 seer and it also runs the camper. I have another all in one inverter also but its not used much anymore. I built my battery from 16 280 ah eve grade a cells. Its 14 kw and i ordered another 14 kw worth. I also have a back up battery thats 24 nissan leaf modules. I only have 1850 watts of solar at the moment but adding more soon. I have 3 seperate charge controllers but my victron 150-70 is the best ive bought so far. Thanks to you and other people making the videos i was able to build our home into a sustainable way of living

@@OKLAHOMAOFFGRID yeah more panels really soon. It should make it thru several days of bad weather for sure. I've actually never seen the batteries below 70%. I'm not home often but the couple days month I'm not in this semi truck I use appliances, run the air-conditioning non stop and we watch TV non stop. The wife uses her hair dryer... we don't change a thing about conserving energy. I just bought a 38 seer minisplit and my fridge is super efficient but yeah it's been an expensive investment but worth it to us from what I'm seeing so far

@@OKLAHOMAOFFGRID man the minisplit was the best thing I bought as far as making life comfortable. I bought the exact one that David poz bought for his garage. I knew it was gonna be a step above the rest of the minisplits because David always studies up on his stuff and his research on the best most efficient minisplit was on point. It's 38 seer with variable speed compressor and variable speed fan on the indoor unit. I set it to 68 degrees and it starts at a little over 600 watts then within 10 or 12 mi minutes it drops to just over 200 watts. If I stay inside it just stays at the little over 200 watts the rest the time. If I'm in and out alot it kinda ramps up and down but it's around half power consumption of the pioneer minisplit that so many people go and buy. It did cost a little more than the pioneer. It weighs more also but it's a freaking amazing thing to have our 30 foot camper having the ac run 24 7 off solar and batteries. I have 1850 watts of solar on some aluminum angled ground mounts and the past 4 days I was home with my lights on a 42 inch TV, a full size fridge, my drill chargers... even turned on the electric part of the waterheater for awhile. My batteries never got down to 80 percent. I have nice batteries and victron 150-70 charge controller and a sungold power 4000 watt 120/ 240 split phase inverter. Ive got a whole other solar power system sitting in the bedroom not hooked up and it's got 14 kw of leaf modules and once I get property and a well dug that solar system will control my water system hopefully. But yeah the inovair minisplit 38 seer is amazing and super efficient with ac and heat too

Amazing video! Truly inspiring! I was wondering, do you have a gasoline backup generator in place, or plan to in the future? Also, with the yellow 3prong plug you showed which goes to the generator, does this essentially replace the solar panels and sends the power to the charge controller? (For when the solar panels are not working)
yes you can plug a generator into that plug and it will back charge the batteries...and yes i have one
good video.... im sure its only temporary , but at 4:43 those small head drywall screws are not meant for outside and will rust and break , and would make me nervous it would fall off that wood ...and im sure you know that 6/2 black wire isnt supposed to be exposed to the elements and should be protected inside a pcv or conduit ...but thats most of the wires for long term use ...but again , im sure that setup is temporary and youll get it all fixed correctly
everything i read told me that the grey 6/2 was rated for direct burial without conduit that is why i did it and why i bought grey in the first place. As far as the screw go im getting better at those things each day. Remember I was never a carpenter of any type I was a repo man for 30 years, I may not be able to build anything 100% but I can still snatch some ones car in 3 seconds flat lol
Good system add more batteries if you are in float that early I would at least add half probably double lead acid is fine …But you should be able to run the ac more if you want…maybe add more insulation inside the house?

Seems like your charge controller can only handle about half of those panels. But I like to over panel too though.
The benefit to using higher voltage like 48 volts instead of 12 volts is you can use much thinner wire running from the panels to your solar controller and the batteries. And that wiring gets expensive. You don't have to buy 48 volt panels to end up with a 48 volt system if you put 4 12 volt panels in series they're going to add up to 48 volts so you just treat four 12 volt panels like 148 volt panel and then you wire as many of those together in parallel as you want and you end up with a 48 volt system and you can run your wires from that whole system to your battery bank and your solar charge controller. You can use much thinner wires and they're much cheaper if you use higher voltage.

Remember also with solar panels being so cheap it's always better to just buy more panels than it is to buy more batteries. And most of the stuff you're going to be doing you're going to be doing during the day anyway when the sun is out so you don't need to be storing as much electricity in a battery if you have a bunch of panels that you can run mostly directly off of. For example I can run a boat trolling motor directly off of a couple of solar panels all day long using one tiny little lead acid battery in between the trolling motor and the solar panels. All the battery does is even out the charge it really never gets drained. You can do that for almost any motor if you're going to be running it mostly during the day. And if you have a week of cloudy weather well then just take a rest and don't do some of the work you would ordinarily do.

F.Y.I., Hotspot energy has Uber efficient mini splits, some are solar with grid backup, others are 48 V battery based made for the offgrid crowd.

I live in a killing hot area of the US and am very "daunted" by all of this solar/electrical language. I wish I had somebody who could just tell me what product/products to buy for the simplest setup to plug in the smallest a/c window unit available for one 10x12 room if the power goes out this summer. I can't put anything on my roof.

The real key to any solar power system is number one never connected to the official electricity grid and you don't have to worry about a lot of the permitting and it can be much much cheaper. Number two use it mostly for heating and air conditioning. The simplest way to do that is to run a window unit air conditioner on your hottest days directly off your inverter from your solar panel. That means you're going to get the maximum solar panel power during the hottest part of the day. The way to heat with solar is you put a large bucket or barrel of water inside your house and you put a water heating element in that bucket and during the day your solar panels heat that water and during the night that hot water radiates that warmth out all night in the cold night inside the house. And don't forget tricks like feeling hot water bottle or even a 2 l Coke bottle with hot water and putting it in the bed with you and then you don't need to heat your whole house at night in the winter time.

Do you have any idea what yours uses energy wise?? just curious, as I have not used ours because it has been a cool summer here.....but simply hooked it up to experiment. Appreciate ya
yessir...thats about right...mine is an 8000 btu and pulls around 560 watts after it settles in for a bit...gets freezing in there even in the middle of the day....at night have to turn it off or run the tiny inverter generator because even the 560 +the fridge 85watts and the cpap about 80 would run the batteries too close to completely discharged...I need double the battery bank then I should be in better shape

battery cores are the old battery or batteries you will give to the people you get the new ones from...like when you buy an alternator for your car there will be a core charge if you dont turn the old one into them at the time of purchase so they can rebuild it and resell it same with batteries they have this core charge

It would be great if you would stop saying the panels are running your equipment. The panels are charging the batteries and the batteries are running your equipment. If you only had one battery you would be in trouble or your stuff would only work during sunny times.
When I tell you the panels are running the equipment that is because the batteries are at float and nothing's being pulled from the batteries the only energy is being pulled and ran off of the solar panels themselves at that point
